1Dopo queste cose Gesù se ne andò all’altra riva del mare di Galilea, cioè il mare di Tiberiade.2Una gran folla lo seguiva, perché vedeva i segni miracolosi che egli faceva sugli infermi.3Ma Gesù salì sul monte e là si pose a sedere con i suoi discepoli.4Or la Pasqua, la festa dei Giudei, era vicina.5Gesù dunque, alzati gli occhi e vedendo che una gran folla veniva verso di lui, disse a Filippo: «Dove compreremo del pane perché questa gente abbia da mangiare?»6Diceva così per metterlo alla prova; perché sapeva bene quello che stava per fare.7Filippo gli rispose: «Duecento denari di pani non bastano perché ciascuno ne riceva un pezzetto».8Uno dei suoi discepoli, Andrea, fratello di Simon Pietro, gli disse:9«C’è qui un ragazzo che ha cinque pani d’orzo e due pesci; ma che cosa sono per così tanta gente?»10Gesù disse: «Fateli sedere». C’era molta erba in quel luogo. La gente dunque si sedette, ed erano circa cinquemila uomini.11Gesù quindi prese i pani e, dopo aver reso grazie, li distribuì alla gente seduta; lo stesso fece dei pesci, quanti ne vollero.12Quando furono saziati, disse ai suoi discepoli: «Raccogliete i pezzi avanzati, perché niente si perda».13Essi quindi li raccolsero, e riempirono dodici ceste con i pezzi dei cinque pani d’orzo che erano avanzati a quelli che avevano mangiato.14La gente dunque, avendo visto il segno miracoloso che Gesù aveva fatto, disse: «Questi è certo il profeta che deve venire nel mondo».15Gesù, quindi, sapendo che stavano per venire a rapirlo per farlo re, si ritirò di nuovo sul monte, da solo.
Gesù cammina sul mare
16Quando fu sera, i suoi discepoli scesero al mare17e, montati in una barca, si diressero all’altra riva, verso Capernaum. Era già buio e Gesù non era ancora venuto presso di loro.18Il mare era agitato, perché tirava un forte vento.19Come ebbero remato per circa venticinque o trenta stadi, videro Gesù camminare sul mare e accostarsi alla barca; ed ebbero paura.20Ma egli disse loro: «Sono io, non temete».21Essi dunque lo vollero prendere nella barca, e subito la barca toccò terra là dove erano diretti.
Gesù, il pane della vita
22Il giorno seguente, la folla che era rimasta sull’altra riva del mare si rese conto che là non c’era altro che una sola barca e che Gesù non vi era salito con i suoi discepoli, ma che i discepoli erano partiti da soli.23Altre barche, intanto, erano giunte da Tiberiade, vicino al luogo dove avevano mangiato il pane dopo che il Signore aveva reso grazie.24La folla, dunque, quando ebbe visto che Gesù non era là, e nemmeno i suoi discepoli, montò in quelle barche e andò a Capernaum in cerca di Gesù.25Trovatolo di là dal mare, gli dissero: «Rabbì, quando sei giunto qui?»26Gesù rispose loro: «In verità, in verità vi dico che voi mi cercate non perché avete visto dei segni miracolosi, ma perché avete mangiato dei pani e siete stati saziati.27Adoperatevi non per il cibo che perisce, ma per il cibo che dura in vita eterna, e che il Figlio dell’uomo vi darà; poiché su di lui il Padre, cioè Dio, ha posto il proprio sigillo».28Essi dunque gli dissero: «Che dobbiamo fare per compiere le opere di Dio?»29Gesù rispose loro: «Questa è l’opera di Dio: che crediate in colui che egli ha mandato».30Allora essi gli dissero: «Quale segno miracoloso fai, dunque, affinché lo vediamo e ti crediamo? Che operi?31I nostri padri mangiarono la manna[1] nel deserto, come è scritto: “Egli diede loro da mangiare del pane venuto dal cielo”[2]».32Gesù disse loro: «In verità, in verità vi dico che non Mosè vi ha dato il pane che viene dal cielo, ma il Padre mio vi dà il vero pane che viene dal cielo.33Poiché il pane di Dio è quello che scende dal cielo, e dà vita al mondo».34Essi quindi gli dissero: «Signore, dacci sempre di questo pane».35Gesù disse loro: «Io sono il pane della vita; chi viene a me non avrà più fame e chi crede in me non avrà mai più sete.36Ma io ve l’ho detto: “Voi {mi} avete visto, eppure non credete!”37Tutti quelli che il Padre mi dà verranno a me; e colui che viene a me, non lo caccerò fuori;38perché sono disceso dal cielo non per fare la mia volontà, ma la volontà di colui che mi ha mandato.39Questa è la volontà di colui che mi ha mandato: che io non perda nessuno di quelli che egli mi ha dati, ma che li risusciti nell’ultimo giorno.40Poiché questa è la volontà del Padre mio: che chiunque contempla il Figlio e crede in lui, abbia vita eterna; e io lo risusciterò nell’ultimo giorno».41Perciò i Giudei mormoravano di lui perché aveva detto: «Io sono il pane che è disceso dal cielo».42Dicevano: «Non è costui Gesù, il figlio di Giuseppe, del quale conosciamo il padre e la madre? Come mai ora dice: “Io sono disceso dal cielo”?»43Gesù rispose loro: «Non mormorate tra di voi.44Nessuno può venire a me se il Padre che mi ha mandato non lo attira; e io lo risusciterò nell’ultimo giorno.45È scritto nei profeti: “Saranno tutti istruiti da Dio”[3]. Chiunque ha udito il Padre e ha imparato da lui, viene a me.46Perché nessuno ha visto il Padre, se non colui che è da Dio; egli ha visto il Padre.47In verità, in verità vi dico: chi crede in me ha vita eterna.48Io sono il pane della vita.49I vostri padri mangiarono la manna nel deserto e morirono.50Questo è il pane che discende dal cielo, affinché chi ne mangia non muoia.51Io sono il pane vivente che è disceso dal cielo; se uno mangia di questo pane vivrà in eterno; e il pane che io darò per la vita del mondo è la mia carne».52I Giudei dunque discutevano tra di loro, dicendo: «Come può costui darci da mangiare la sua carne?»53Perciò Gesù disse loro: «In verità, in verità vi dico che se non mangiate la carne del Figlio dell’uomo e non bevete il suo sangue, non avete vita in voi.54Chi mangia la mia carne e beve il mio sangue ha vita eterna; e io lo risusciterò nell’ultimo giorno.55Perché la mia carne è vero cibo e il mio sangue è vera bevanda.56Chi mangia la mia carne e beve il mio sangue dimora in me, e io in lui.57Come il Padre vivente mi ha mandato e io vivo a motivo del Padre, così chi mi mangia vivrà anch’egli a motivo di me.58Questo è il pane che è disceso dal cielo; non come quello che hanno mangiato i padri e sono morti; chi mangia di questo pane vivrà in eterno».59Queste cose disse Gesù, insegnando nella sinagoga di Capernaum.
Gesù mette alla prova la lealtà dei discepoli
60Perciò molti dei suoi discepoli, dopo aver udito, dissero: «Questo parlare è duro; chi può ascoltarlo?»61Gesù, sapendo dentro di sé che i suoi discepoli mormoravano di ciò, disse loro: «Questo vi scandalizza?62E che sarebbe se vedeste il Figlio dell’uomo ascendere dov’era prima?63È lo Spirito che vivifica; la carne non è di alcuna utilità; le parole che vi ho dette sono spirito e vita.64Ma tra di voi ci sono alcuni che non credono». Gesù sapeva infatti fin dal principio chi erano quelli che non credevano e chi era colui che lo avrebbe tradito.65E diceva: «Per questo vi ho detto che nessuno può venire a me se non gli è dato dal Padre».66Da allora molti dei suoi discepoli si tirarono indietro e non andavano più con lui.67Perciò Gesù disse ai dodici: «Non volete andarvene anche voi?»68Simon Pietro gli rispose: «Signore, da chi andremmo noi? Tu hai parole di vita eterna!69E noi abbiamo creduto e abbiamo conosciuto che tu sei il Santo di Dio».70Gesù rispose loro: «Non ho io scelto voi dodici? Eppure uno di voi è un diavolo!»71Egli parlava di Giuda, figlio di Simone Iscariota[4], perché questi, uno dei dodici, stava per tradirlo.

(Giov 2,23)3Jesus aber ging hinauf auf den Berg und setzte sich dort mit seinen Jüngern. (Mat 5,1)4Es war aber das Passah nahe, das Fest der Juden. (Giov 2,13; Giov 5,1)5Als nun Jesus die Augen aufhob und sah, dass eine große Volksmenge zu ihm kommt, spricht er zu Philippus: Woher sollen wir Brote kaufen, dass diese essen?6Dies sagte er aber, um ihn zu prüfen[1]; denn er selbst wusste, was er tun wollte.7Philippus antwortete ihm: Für zweihundert Denare Brote reichen nicht für sie hin, dass jeder ⟨auch nur⟩ ein wenig bekommt.8Einer von seinen Jüngern, Andreas, der Bruder des Simon Petrus, spricht zu ihm:9Es ist ein kleiner Junge hier, der fünf Gerstenbrote und zwei Fische hat. Aber was ist dies unter so viele?10Jesus sprach: Macht, dass die Leute sich lagern! Es war aber viel Gras an dem Ort. Es lagerten sich nun die Männer, an Zahl etwa fünftausend.11Jesus aber nahm die Brote, und als er gedankt hatte, teilte er sie denen aus, die da lagerten; ebenso auch von den Fischen, so viel sie wollten. (Giov 6,23; Giov 21,13)12Als sie aber gesättigt waren, spricht er zu seinen Jüngern: Sammelt die übrig gebliebenen Brocken, damit nichts umkommt!13Sie sammelten nun und füllten zwölf Handkörbe mit Brocken von den fünf Gerstenbroten, welche denen, die gegessen hatten, übrig blieben.14Als nun die Leute das Zeichen sahen, das Jesus tat, sprachen sie: Dieser ist wahrhaftig der Prophet, der in die Welt kommen soll. (Giov 1,21)15Da nun Jesus erkannte, dass sie kommen und ihn ergreifen wollten, um ihn zum König zu machen, zog er sich wieder auf den Berg zurück, er allein. (Mat 14,23; Giov 18,36)
Jesus geht auf dem See
16Als es aber Abend geworden war, gingen seine Jünger hinab an den See; (Mat 14,22; Mar 6,45)17und sie stiegen in das Boot und fuhren über den See nach Kapernaum. Und es war schon finster geworden, und Jesus war noch nicht zu ihnen gekommen;18und der See wurde aufgewühlt, da ein starker Wind wehte. (Mar 4,37)19Als sie nun etwa fünfundzwanzig oder dreißig Stadien[2] gerudert waren, sehen sie Jesus auf dem See dahergehen und nahe an das Boot herankommen, und sie fürchteten sich.20Er aber spricht zu ihnen: Ich bin es, fürchtet euch nicht! (Giov 18,5)21Sie wollten ihn nun in das Boot nehmen, und sogleich war das Boot am Land, wohin sie fuhren. (Sal 107,30)
Vom Brot des Lebens
22Am folgenden Tag sah die Volksmenge, die jenseits des Sees stand, dass dort kein anderes Boot war als nur eines[3], und dass Jesus nicht mit seinen Jüngern in das Boot gestiegen, sondern seine Jünger allein weggefahren waren.23Es kamen aber andere Boote aus Tiberias nahe an den Ort, wo sie das Brot gegessen, nachdem der Herr gedankt hatte. (Giov 6,11)24Da nun die Volksmenge sah, dass Jesus nicht dort war noch seine Jünger, stiegen sie in die Boote und kamen nach Kapernaum und suchten Jesus. (Giov 11,56)25Und als sie ihn jenseits des Sees gefunden hatten, sprachen sie zu ihm: Rabbi[4], wann bist du hierhergekommen?26Jesus antwortete ihnen und sprach: Wahrlich, wahrlich, ich sage euch: Ihr sucht mich, nicht weil ihr Zeichen gesehen, sondern weil ihr von den Broten gegessen habt und gesättigt worden seid.27Wirkt nicht ⟨für⟩ die Speise, die vergeht, sondern ⟨für⟩ die Speise, die da bleibt ins ewige Leben, die der Sohn des Menschen euch geben wird! Denn diesen hat der Vater, Gott, beglaubigt[5]. (Lu 10,39; Giov 4,14; Giov 6,33)28Da sprachen sie zu ihm: Was sollen wir tun, damit wir die Werke Gottes wirken? (Mat 19,16; At 2,37)29Jesus antwortete und sprach zu ihnen: Dies ist das Werk Gottes, dass ihr an den glaubt, den er gesandt hat. (Ro 2,7; 1Te 1,3; 1G 3,23)30Da sprachen sie zu ihm: Was tust du nun für ein Zeichen, damit wir sehen und dir glauben? Was wirkst du? (Giov 2,18)31Unsere Väter aßen das Manna in der Wüste, wie geschrieben steht: »Brot aus dem Himmel gab er ihnen zu essen.« (Eso 16,4; De 8,3; Ne 9,15; Sal 78,24; Ap 2,17)32Da sprach Jesus zu ihnen: Wahrlich, wahrlich, ich sage euch: Nicht Mose hat euch das Brot aus dem Himmel gegeben, sondern mein Vater gibt euch das wahrhaftige Brot aus dem Himmel.33Denn das Brot Gottes ist der, welcher aus dem Himmel herabkommt und der Welt das Leben gibt. (Mat 5,6; Giov 4,14; Giov 6,48; Ap 7,16)36Aber ich habe euch gesagt, dass ihr mich auch gesehen habt und nicht glaubt.37Alles, was mir der Vater gibt, wird zu mir kommen, und wer zu mir kommt, den werde ich nicht hinausstoßen; (Giov 10,29; Giov 17,6)38denn ich bin vom Himmel herabgekommen, nicht dass ich meinen Willen tue, sondern den Willen dessen, der mich gesandt hat. (Giov 3,13; Giov 4,34)39Dies aber ist der Wille dessen, der mich gesandt hat, dass ich von allem, was er mir gegeben hat, nichts verliere, sondern es auferwecke am letzten Tag. (Giov 10,28; Giov 11,24; Giov 12,48; Giov 17,12; Giov 18,9)40Denn dies ist der Wille meines Vaters, dass jeder, der den Sohn sieht und an ihn glaubt, ewiges Leben hat; und ich werde ihn auferwecken am letzten Tag. (Giov 3,14; Giov 11,24; Giov 12,48)41Da murrten die Juden über ihn, weil er sagte: Ich bin das Brot, das aus dem Himmel herabgekommen ist; (Giov 6,61)42und sie sprachen: Ist dieser nicht Jesus, der Sohn Josefs, dessen Vater und Mutter wir kennen? Wie sagt denn dieser: Ich bin aus dem Himmel herabgekommen? (Mat 13,55; Lu 4,22; Giov 1,45; Giov 7,27; Giov 8,14; Giov 9,29)43Da antwortete Jesus und sprach zu ihnen: Murrt nicht untereinander!44Niemand kann zu mir kommen, wenn nicht der Vater, der mich gesandt hat, ihn zieht; und ich werde ihn auferwecken am letzten Tag. (Giov 6,65; Giov 11,24; Giov 12,48)45Es steht in den Propheten geschrieben: »Und sie werden alle von Gott gelehrt sein.« Jeder, der von dem Vater gehört und gelernt hat, kommt zu mir. (Is 54,13; 1Te 4,9)46Nicht dass jemand den Vater gesehen hat, außer dem, der von Gott ist, dieser hat den Vater gesehen. (Giov 1,18)47Wahrlich, wahrlich, ich sage euch: Wer glaubt, hat ewiges Leben. Das Brot aber[7], das ich geben werde, ist mein Fleisch[8] für das Leben der Welt. (Lu 10,39; Giov 4,14; Giov 6,33)52Die Juden stritten nun untereinander und sagten: Wie kann dieser uns sein Fleisch zu essen geben?53Da sprach Jesus zu ihnen: Wahrlich, wahrlich, ich sage euch: Wenn ihr nicht das Fleisch des Sohnes des Menschen esst und sein Blut trinkt, so habt ihr kein Leben in euch selbst. (1G 5,12)54Wer mein Fleisch isst[9] und mein Blut trinkt, hat ewiges Leben, und ich werde ihn auferwecken am letzten Tag; (Giov 11,24; Giov 12,48)55denn mein Fleisch ist wahre Speise, und mein Blut ist wahrer Trank.56Wer mein Fleisch isst[10] und mein Blut trinkt, bleibt in mir und ich in ihm. (Giov 15,4; Giov 17,26; 1G 3,24)57Wie der lebendige Vater mich gesandt hat, und ich lebe um des Vaters willen[11], ⟨so⟩ auch, wer mich isst[12], der wird auch leben um meinetwillen[13].58Dies ist das Brot, das aus dem Himmel herabgekommen ist. Nicht wie die Väter aßen und starben; wer dieses Brot isst[14], wird leben in Ewigkeit[15]. (Giov 4,14; Giov 6,33)59Dies sprach er, als er in der Synagoge[16] zu Kapernaum lehrte.
Ablehnung der Rede Jesu – Bekenntnis des Petrus – Hinweis auf den Verräter
60Viele nun von seinen Jüngern, die es gehört hatten, sprachen: Diese Rede ist hart. Wer kann sie hören?61Da aber Jesus bei sich selbst wusste, dass seine Jünger hierüber murrten, sprach er zu ihnen: Daran nehmt ihr Anstoß[17]? (Giov 6,41)62Wenn ihr nun den Sohn des Menschen ⟨dahin⟩ auffahren seht, wo er vorher war? (Lu 24,51; Giov 3,13; Giov 20,17)63Der Geist ist es, der lebendig macht; das Fleisch nützt nichts. Die Worte, die ich zu euch geredet habe, sind Geist und sind Leben; (Ro 2,28; 2Co 3,6)64aber es sind einige unter euch, die nicht glauben. Denn Jesus wusste von Anfang an, welche es waren, die nicht glaubten, und wer es war, der ihn überliefern würde. (Giov 2,24; Giov 13,11)65Und er sprach: Darum habe ich euch gesagt, dass niemand zu mir kommen kann, es sei ihm denn von dem Vater gegeben. (Giov 6,44)66Von da an gingen viele seiner Jünger zurück und gingen nicht mehr mit ihm.67Da sprach Jesus zu den Zwölfen: Wollt ihr etwa auch weggehen?68Simon Petrus antwortete ihm: Herr, zu wem sollten wir gehen? Du hast Worte ewigen Lebens; (At 5,20)69und wir haben geglaubt und erkannt, dass du der Heilige Gottes bist. (Mat 16,16; Mar 1,24; Lu 9,20; Giov 4,42)70Jesus antwortete ihnen: Habe ich nicht euch, die Zwölf, erwählt? Und von euch ist einer ein Teufel. Jesus Walks on Water
16When evening came, his disciples went down to the sea,17got into a boat, and started across the sea to Capernaum. It was now dark, and Jesus had not yet come to them.18The sea became rough because a strong wind was blowing.19When they had rowed about three or four miles,[2] they saw Jesus walking on the sea and coming near the boat, and they were frightened.20But he said to them, “It is I; do not be afraid.” (Lu 24,38; Lu 24,39)21Then they were glad to take him into the boat, and immediately the boat was at the land to which they were going.
I Am the Bread of Life
22On the next day the crowd that remained on the other side of the sea saw that there had been only one boat there, and that Jesus had not entered the boat with his disciples, but that his disciples had gone away alone. (Giov 21,8)23Other boats from Tiberias came near the place where they had eaten the bread after the Lord had given thanks. (Giov 6,11)24So when the crowd saw that Jesus was not there, nor his disciples, they themselves got into the boats and went to Capernaum, seeking Jesus.
