1Danach ging Jesus weg ans andre Ufer des Galiläischen Meeres, das auch See von Tiberias heißt. (Mt 14,13; Mk 6,30; Lk 9,10)2Und es zog ihm viel Volk nach, weil sie die Zeichen sahen, die er an den Kranken tat.3Jesus aber ging hinauf auf einen Berg und setzte sich dort mit seinen Jüngern.4Es war aber kurz vor dem Passa, dem Fest der Juden. (Joh 2,13; Joh 11,55)5Da hob Jesus seine Augen auf und sieht, dass viel Volk zu ihm kommt, und spricht zu Philippus: Wo kaufen wir Brot, damit diese zu essen haben?6Das sagte er aber, um ihn zu prüfen; denn er wusste wohl, was er tun wollte.7Philippus antwortete ihm: Für zweihundert Silbergroschen Brot ist nicht genug für sie, dass jeder auch nur ein wenig bekomme.8Spricht zu ihm einer seiner Jünger, Andreas, der Bruder des Simon Petrus:9Es ist ein Knabe hier, der hat fünf Gerstenbrote und zwei Fische. Aber was ist das für so viele?10Jesus aber sprach: Lasst die Leute sich lagern. Es war aber viel Gras an dem Ort. Da lagerten sich etwa fünftausend Männer.11Jesus aber nahm die Brote, dankte und gab sie denen, die sich gelagert hatten; desgleichen auch von den Fischen, so viel sie wollten.12Als sie aber satt waren, spricht er zu seinen Jüngern: Sammelt die übrigen Brocken, damit nichts umkommt.13Da sammelten sie und füllten zwölf Körbe mit Brocken von den fünf Gerstenbroten, die denen übrig blieben, die gespeist worden waren.14Als nun die Menschen das Zeichen sahen, das Jesus tat, sprachen sie: Das ist wahrlich der Prophet, der in die Welt kommen soll. (5Mo 18,15; Joh 2,11)15Da Jesus nun merkte, dass sie kommen würden und ihn ergreifen, um ihn zum König zu machen, entwich er wieder auf den Berg, er allein.
Jesus geht über das Wasser
16Am Abend aber gingen seine Jünger hinab an das Meer, (Mt 14,22; Mk 6,45)17stiegen in ein Boot und fuhren über das Meer nach Kapernaum. Und es war schon finster geworden und Jesus war noch nicht zu ihnen gekommen.18Und das Meer wurde aufgewühlt von einem starken Wind.19Als sie nun etwa fünfundzwanzig oder dreißig Stadien gerudert waren, sahen sie Jesus auf dem Meer gehen und nahe an das Boot kommen; und sie fürchteten sich.20Er aber spricht zu ihnen: Ich bin’s; fürchtet euch nicht!21Da wollten sie ihn ins Boot nehmen; und sogleich war das Boot am Land, wohin sie fahren wollten.
Das Brot des Lebens
22Am nächsten Tag sah das Volk, das am andern Ufer des Meeres stand, dass kein anderes Boot da war als das eine und dass Jesus nicht mit seinen Jüngern in das Boot gestiegen war, sondern seine Jünger waren allein weggefahren.23Es kamen aber andere Boote von Tiberias nahe zu der Stätte, wo sie das Brot gegessen hatten, nachdem der Herr die Danksagung gesprochen hatte.24Als nun das Volk sah, dass Jesus nicht da war und seine Jünger auch nicht, stiegen sie in die Boote und kamen nach Kapernaum und suchten Jesus.25Und als sie ihn fanden am andern Ufer des Meeres, fragten sie ihn: Rabbi, wann bist du hergekommen?26Jesus antwortete ihnen und sprach: Wahrlich, wahrlich, ich sage euch: Ihr sucht mich nicht, weil ihr Zeichen gesehen habt, sondern weil ihr von dem Brot gegessen habt und satt geworden seid.27Müht euch nicht um Speise, die vergänglich ist, sondern um Speise, die da bleibt zum ewigen Leben. Die wird euch der Menschensohn geben; denn auf ihm ist das Siegel Gottes des Vaters. (Joh 5,36)28Da fragten sie ihn: Was sollen wir tun, dass wir Gottes Werke wirken?29Jesus antwortete und sprach zu ihnen: Das ist Gottes Werk, dass ihr an den glaubt, den er gesandt hat.30Da sprachen sie zu ihm: Was tust du für ein Zeichen, auf dass wir sehen und dir glauben? Was wirkst du? (Joh 4,48)31Unsre Väter haben Manna gegessen in der Wüste, wie geschrieben steht: »Brot vom Himmel gab er ihnen zu essen.« (2Mo 16,13)32Da sprach Jesus zu ihnen: Wahrlich, wahrlich, ich sage euch: Nicht Mose hat euch das Brot vom Himmel gegeben, sondern mein Vater gibt euch das wahre Brot vom Himmel.33Denn dies ist das Brot Gottes, das vom Himmel kommt und gibt der Welt das Leben.34Da sprachen sie zu ihm: Herr, gib uns allezeit solches Brot. (Joh 4,15)35Jesus aber sprach zu ihnen: Ich bin das Brot des Lebens. Wer zu mir kommt, den wird nicht hungern; und wer an mich glaubt, den wird nimmermehr dürsten. (Joh 4,14; Joh 7,37)36Aber ich habe euch gesagt: Ihr habt mich gesehen und glaubt doch nicht.37Alles, was mir der Vater gibt, das kommt zu mir; und wer zu mir kommt, den werde ich nicht hinausstoßen. (Mt 11,28)38Denn ich bin vom Himmel gekommen, nicht damit ich meinen Willen tue, sondern den Willen dessen, der mich gesandt hat. (Joh 4,34)39Das ist aber der Wille dessen, der mich gesandt hat, dass ich nichts verliere von allem, was er mir gegeben hat, sondern dass ich’s auferwecke am Jüngsten Tage. (Joh 10,28; Joh 17,12)40Denn das ist der Wille meines Vaters, dass, wer den Sohn sieht und glaubt an ihn, das ewige Leben habe; und ich werde ihn auferwecken am Jüngsten Tage. (Joh 5,29; Joh 11,24)41Da murrten die Juden über ihn, weil er sagte: Ich bin das Brot, das vom Himmel gekommen ist,42und sprachen: Ist dieser nicht Jesus, Josefs Sohn, dessen Vater und Mutter wir kennen? Wie kann er jetzt sagen: Ich bin vom Himmel gekommen? (Lk 4,22)43Jesus antwortete und sprach zu ihnen: Murrt nicht untereinander.44Es kann niemand zu mir kommen, es sei denn, ihn ziehe der Vater, der mich gesandt hat, und ich werde ihn auferwecken am Jüngsten Tage.45Es steht geschrieben in den Propheten: »Sie werden alle von Gott gelehrt sein.« Wer es vom Vater hört und lernt, der kommt zu mir.46Nicht dass jemand den Vater gesehen hätte; nur der, der von Gott ist, der hat den Vater gesehen. (Joh 1,18)47Wahrlich, wahrlich, ich sage euch: Wer glaubt, der hat das ewige Leben. (Joh 3,16)48Ich bin das Brot des Lebens.49Eure Väter haben in der Wüste das Manna gegessen und sind gestorben. (1Kor 10,3)50Dies ist das Brot, das vom Himmel kommt, damit, wer davon isst, nicht sterbe.51Ich bin das lebendige Brot, das vom Himmel gekommen ist. Wer von diesem Brot isst, der wird leben in Ewigkeit. Und das Brot, das ich geben werde, ist mein Fleisch – für das Leben der Welt. (Mk 14,22)52Da stritten die Juden untereinander und sprachen: Wie kann dieser uns sein Fleisch zu essen geben?53Jesus sprach zu ihnen: Wahrlich, wahrlich, ich sage euch: Wenn ihr nicht esst das Fleisch des Menschensohns und trinkt sein Blut, so habt ihr kein Leben in euch.54Wer mein Fleisch isst und mein Blut trinkt, der hat das ewige Leben, und ich werde ihn am Jüngsten Tage auferwecken. (Mt 26,26)55Denn mein Fleisch ist die wahre Speise, und mein Blut ist der wahre Trank.56Wer mein Fleisch isst und trinkt mein Blut, der bleibt in mir und ich in ihm. (Joh 15,4; 1Joh 3,24)57Wie mich gesandt hat der lebendige Vater und ich lebe um des Vaters willen, so wird auch, wer mich isst, leben um meinetwillen.58Dies ist das Brot, das vom Himmel gekommen ist. Es ist nicht wie bei den Vätern, die gegessen haben und gestorben sind. Wer dies Brot isst, der wird leben in Ewigkeit.59Das sagte er in der Synagoge, als er in Kapernaum lehrte.
Spaltung unter den Jüngern und das Bekenntnis des Petrus
60Viele nun seiner Jünger, die das hörten, sprachen: Das ist eine harte Rede; wer kann sie hören?61Da Jesus aber bei sich selbst merkte, dass seine Jünger darüber murrten, sprach er zu ihnen: Nehmt ihr daran Anstoß?62Wie, wenn ihr nun sehen werdet den Menschensohn auffahren dahin, wo er zuvor war? (Lk 24,50; Joh 3,13)63Der Geist ist’s, der da lebendig macht; das Fleisch ist nichts nütze. Die Worte, die ich zu euch geredet habe, die sind Geist und sind Leben. (Joh 3,6; 2Kor 3,6)64Aber es sind etliche unter euch, die glauben nicht. Denn Jesus wusste von Anfang an, wer die waren, die nicht glaubten, und wer ihn verraten würde.65Und er sprach: Darum habe ich euch gesagt: Niemand kann zu mir kommen, es sei ihm denn vom Vater gegeben.66Von da an wandten sich viele seiner Jünger ab und gingen hinfort nicht mehr mit ihm.67Da sprach Jesus zu den Zwölfen: Wollt ihr auch weggehen?68Da antwortete ihm Simon Petrus: Herr, wohin sollen wir gehen? Du hast Worte des ewigen Lebens;69und wir haben geglaubt und erkannt: Du bist der Heilige Gottes. (Mt 16,16)70Jesus antwortete ihnen: Habe ich nicht euch Zwölf erwählt? Und einer von euch ist ein Teufel.71Er redete aber von Judas, dem Sohn des Simon Iskariot. Der verriet ihn hernach und war einer der Zwölf.

(Mt 14,13; Mk 6,30; Lk 9,10)2Une foule immense le suivait, attirée par les guérisons miraculeuses dont elle avait été témoin.3C’est pourquoi Jésus s’en alla dans la montagne et s’assit là avec ses disciples.4La Pâque, la fête des Juifs était proche.5Jésus regarda autour de lui et vit une foule nombreuse venir à lui. Alors il demanda à Philippe: Où pourrions-nous acheter assez de pains pour nourrir tout ce monde?6Il ne lui posait cette question que pour voir ce qu’il allait répondre car, en réalité, il savait déjà ce qu’il allait faire.7– Rien que pour donner à chacun un petit morceau de pain, il faudrait au moins deux cents pièces d’argent[1], lui répondit Philippe. (Mt 20,2)8Un autre disciple, André, frère de Simon Pierre, lui dit:9Il y a ici un jeune garçon qui a cinq pains d’orge et deux poissons. Mais qu’est-ce que cela pour tant de monde?10– Dites-leur à tous de s’asseoir, leur ordonna Jésus. L’herbe était abondante à cet endroit et la foule s’installa donc par terre. Il y avait là environ cinq mille hommes.11Jésus prit alors les pains, remercia Dieu, puis les fit distribuer à ceux qui avaient pris place sur l’herbe. Il leur donna aussi autant de poisson qu’ils en désiraient.12Quand ils eurent tous mangé à leur faim, Jésus dit à ses disciples: Ramassez les morceaux qui restent, pour que rien ne soit gaspillé.13Ils les ramassèrent donc et remplirent douze paniers avec ce qui restait des cinq pains d’orge qu’on avait mangés.14Lorsque tous ces gens-là virent le signe miraculeux de Jésus, ils s’écrièrent: Pas de doute: cet homme est vraiment le Prophète qui devait venir dans le monde.15Mais Jésus, sachant qu’ils allaient l’enlever de force pour le proclamer roi, se retira de nouveau, tout seul, dans la montagne.
Jésus marche sur les eaux
16A la tombée de la nuit, ses disciples redescendirent au bord du lac. (Mt 14,22; Mk 6,45)17Ils montèrent dans un bateau et se dirigèrent vers Capernaüm, sur l’autre rive. Il faisait déjà nuit et Jésus ne les avait pas encore rejoints.18Un vent violent se mit à souffler, et le lac était très agité.19Les disciples avaient déjà parcouru cinq ou six kilomètres, quand ils virent Jésus marcher sur l’eau et s’approcher de leur bateau. L’épouvante les saisit.20Mais Jésus leur dit: C’est moi, n’ayez pas peur!21Ils voulurent alors le faire monter dans le bateau, et au même moment, ils touchèrent terre à l’endroit où ils voulaient aller.
Le pain qui fait vivre
22Le lendemain, ceux qui étaient restés sur l’autre rive se rendirent compte qu’il n’y avait eu là qu’un seul bateau et que Jésus n’avait pas accompagné ses disciples; ceux-ci étaient repartis seuls.23Entre-temps, d’autres bateaux étaient arrivés de Tibériade, près de l’endroit où toute cette foule avait été nourrie après que le Seigneur eut remercié Dieu.24Quand les gens virent que Jésus n’était pas là, et ses disciples non plus, ils montèrent dans ces bateaux pour aller à Capernaüm, à la recherche de Jésus.25Ils le trouvèrent de l’autre côté du lac et lui demandèrent: Maître, quand es-tu venu ici?26Jésus leur répondit: Vraiment, je vous l’assure, si vous me cherchez, ce n’est pas parce que vous avez compris le sens de mes signes miraculeux. Non! C’est parce que vous avez mangé du pain et que vous avez été rassasiés.27Travaillez, non pour la nourriture périssable, mais pour celle qui dure pour la vie éternelle. Cette nourriture, c’est le Fils de l’homme qui vous la donnera, car Dieu le Père lui en a accordé le pouvoir en le marquant de son sceau[2].28– Et que devons-nous faire pour accomplir les œuvres que Dieu attend de nous? lui demandèrent-ils encore.29– L’œuvre de Dieu, leur répondit Jésus, c’est que vous croyiez en celui qu’il a envoyé.30Sur quoi, ils lui dirent: Quel signe miraculeux nous feras-tu voir pour que nous puissions croire en toi? Que vas-tu faire?31Pendant qu’ils traversaient le désert, nos ancêtres ont mangé la manne[3], comme le dit ce texte de l’Ecriture: Il leur donna à manger un pain qui venait du ciel[4]. (2Mo 16,15; Ps 78,24)32Mais Jésus leur répondit: Vraiment, je vous l’assure: ce n’est pas Moïse qui vous a donné le pain venu du ciel, c’est mon Père qui vous donne le pain du ciel, le vrai pain.33Car le pain qui vient de Dieu, c’est celui qui descend du ciel et qui donne la vie au monde.34– Seigneur, dirent-ils alors, donne-nous toujours de ce pain-là.35Et Jésus répondit: Moi, je suis le pain qui donne la vie. Celui qui vient à moi n’aura plus jamais faim, celui qui croit en moi n’aura plus jamais soif.36Mais je vous l’ai déjà dit: vous avez vu, et vous ne croyez pas.37Tous ceux que le Père me donne viendront à moi, et je ne repousserai pas celui qui vient à moi.38Car si je suis descendu du ciel, ce n’est pas pour faire ce qui me plaît, mais pour accomplir la volonté de celui qui m’a envoyé.39Or, celui qui m’a envoyé veut que je ne perde aucun de ceux qu’il m’a donnés, mais que je les ressuscite au dernier jour.40Oui, telle est la volonté de mon Père: que tous ceux qui tournent leurs regards vers le Fils et qui croient en lui, possèdent la vie éternelle, et moi, je les ressusciterai au dernier jour.41Alors les gens se mirent à murmurer contre lui, parce qu’il avait dit: « C’est moi qui suis le pain descendu du ciel. »42Ils disaient: Voyons, n’est-ce pas Jésus, le fils de Joseph? Nous connaissons bien son père et sa mère! Comment peut-il prétendre qu’il est descendu du ciel?43Jésus leur dit: Cessez donc de murmurer ainsi entre vous!44Personne ne peut venir à moi si le Père qui m’a envoyé ne l’attire, et moi, je le ressusciterai au dernier jour.45Dans les écrits des prophètes, vous pouvez lire cette parole: Dieu les instruira tous[5]. Tout homme qui écoute la voix du Père et qui est instruit par lui vient à moi. (Jes 54,13)46Personne n’a jamais vu le Père, sauf celui qui est venu d’auprès de Dieu. Lui, il a vu le Père.47Vraiment, je vous l’assure: celui qui croit a la vie éternelle,48car je suis le pain qui donne la vie.49Vos ancêtres ont bien mangé la manne dans le désert et cela ne les a pas empêchés de mourir.50Mais c’est ici le pain qui descend du ciel: celui qui en mange ne mourra pas.51Moi, je suis le pain vivant descendu du ciel: si quelqu’un mange de ce pain-là, il vivra éternellement. Le pain que je donnerai pour que le monde vive, c’est mon propre corps[6].52A ces mots, les Juifs se mirent à discuter vivement entre eux, disant: Comment cet homme pourrait-il nous donner son corps à manger?53Alors Jésus leur dit: Oui, vraiment, je vous l’assure: si vous ne mangez pas la chair du Fils de l’homme et si vous ne buvez pas son sang, vous n’aurez pas la vie en vous.54Celui qui se nourrit de ma chair et qui boit mon sang a la vie éternelle, et moi je le ressusciterai au dernier jour.55Car ma chair est vraiment une nourriture et mon sang est vraiment un breuvage.56Celui qui mange ma chair et boit mon sang demeure en moi, et moi je demeure en lui.57Le Père qui m’a envoyé a la vie en lui-même, et c’est lui qui me fait vivre; ainsi, celui qui se nourrit de moi vivra lui aussi par moi.58C’est ici le pain descendu du ciel. Il n’est pas comme celui que vos ancêtres ont mangé; eux, ils sont morts; mais celui qui mange ce pain-ci vivra pour toujours.59Voilà ce que déclara Jésus lorsqu’il enseigna dans la synagogue de Capernaüm.60Après l’avoir entendu, plusieurs de ses disciples dirent: Ce langage est bien difficile à accepter! Qui peut continuer à l’écouter?61Jésus savait fort bien quels murmures ses paroles avaient soulevés parmi eux. C’est pourquoi il leur dit: Cela vous choque-t-il?62Et si vous voyez le Fils de l’homme remonter là où il était auparavant?63C’est l’Esprit qui donne la vie; la chair à elle seule ne sert à rien. Les paroles que je vous ai dites sont Esprit et vie[7].64Hélas, il y en a parmi vous qui ne croient pas. En effet, dès le début Jésus savait quels étaient ceux qui ne croyaient pas, et qui était celui qui allait le trahir.65Aussi ajouta-t-il: C’est bien pour cela que je vous ai dit: Personne ne peut venir à moi si cela ne lui est accordé par le Père.66A partir de ce moment-là, beaucoup de ses disciples l’abandonnèrent et cessèrent de l’accompagner.67Alors Jésus, se tournant vers les Douze, leur demanda: Et vous, ne voulez-vous pas aussi partir?68Mais Simon Pierre lui répondit: Seigneur, vers qui irions-nous? Tu as les paroles de la vie éternelle.69Nous, nous avons mis toute notre confiance en toi et nous savons que tu es le Saint, envoyé de Dieu.70– N’est-ce pas moi qui vous ai choisis tous les douze? reprit Jésus. Et pourtant, l’un de vous est un diable.71Par ces mots, il désignait Judas, fils de Simon Iscariot, l’un des Douze, qui allait le trahir.

Jesus Walks on Water
16When evening came, his disciples went down to the sea,17got into a boat, and started across the sea to Capernaum. It was now dark, and Jesus had not yet come to them.18The sea became rough because a strong wind was blowing.19When they had rowed about three or four miles,[2] they saw Jesus walking on the sea and coming near the boat, and they were frightened.20But he said to them, “It is I; do not be afraid.” (Lk 24,38; Lk 24,39)21Then they were glad to take him into the boat, and immediately the boat was at the land to which they were going.
I Am the Bread of Life
22On the next day the crowd that remained on the other side of the sea saw that there had been only one boat there, and that Jesus had not entered the boat with his disciples, but that his disciples had gone away alone. (Joh 21,8)23Other boats from Tiberias came near the place where they had eaten the bread after the Lord had given thanks. (Joh 6,11)24So when the crowd saw that Jesus was not there, nor his disciples, they themselves got into the boats and went to Capernaum, seeking Jesus. (Mt 14,34; Mk 6,53; Joh 6,17)25When they found him on the other side of the sea, they said to him, “Rabbi, when did you come here?” (Joh 1,38)26Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you are seeking me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves. (Joh 6,35)49Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died. (Joh 6,31; Joh 6,58)50This is the bread that comes down from heaven, so that one may eat of it and not die. (Joh 6,27; Joh 20,31)54Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day. (Joh 6,39)55For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink.56Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me, and I in him. (Joh 15,4; Joh 15,5; 1Joh 3,24; 1Joh 4,13; 1Joh 4,15; 1Joh 4,16)57As the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so whoever feeds on me, he also will live because of me. (Joh 3,17; Joh 5,26; Joh 11,25; Offb 1,18)58This is the bread that came down from heaven, not like the bread[3] the fathers ate, and died. Whoever feeds on this bread will live forever.” (Joh 6,33; Joh 6,49)59Jesus[4] said these things in the synagogue, as he taught at Capernaum. (Joh 6,24)
The Words of Eternal Life
60When many of his disciples heard it, they said, “This is a hard saying; who can listen to it?” (Joh 6,64; Joh 6,66)61But Jesus, knowing in himself that his disciples were grumbling about this, said to them, “Do you take offense at this? (Joh 2,24; Joh 2,25)62Then what if you were to see the Son of Man ascending to where he was before? (Mk 16,19; Joh 3,13; Joh 6,27; Joh 17,5)63It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is no help at all. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life. (Joh 3,6; Joh 6,68; 1Kor 15,45; 2Kor 3,6)64But there are some of you who do not believe.” (For Jesus knew from the beginning who those were who did not believe, and who it was who would betray him.) (Joh 6,61; Joh 6,66; Joh 6,71; Joh 13,11)65And he said, “This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted him by the Father.” (Joh 3,27; Joh 6,44)66After this many of his disciples turned back and no longer walked with him. (Joh 6,60)67So Jesus said to the twelve, “Do you want to go away as well?” (Joh 6,70)68Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life, (Joh 12,50; Joh 17,8; Apg 5,20)69and we have believed, and have come to know, that you are the Holy One of God.” (Mk 1,24; Joh 1,49; Joh 11,27; 1Joh 4,16)70Jesus answered them, “Did I not choose you, the twelve? And yet one of you is a devil.” (Joh 6,67; Joh 13,2; Joh 13,18; Joh 13,27; Joh 17,12)71He spoke of Judas the son of Simon Iscariot, for he, one of the twelve, was going to betray him. (Joh 6,64; Joh 13,26)
