1Danach war ein Fest der Juden, und Jesus zog hinauf nach Jerusalem. (Joh 2,13)2Es ist aber in Jerusalem beim Schaftor ein Teich, der heißt auf Hebräisch Betesda. Dort sind fünf Hallen; (Neh 3,1)3-4in denen lagen viele Kranke, Blinde, Lahme, Ausgezehrte.[1]5Es war aber dort ein Mensch, der war seit achtunddreißig Jahren krank.6Als Jesus ihn liegen sah und vernahm, dass er schon so lange krank war, spricht er zu ihm: Willst du gesund werden?7Der Kranke antwortete ihm: Herr, ich habe keinen Menschen, der mich in den Teich bringt, wenn das Wasser sich bewegt; wenn ich aber hinkomme, so steigt ein anderer vor mir hinein.8Jesus spricht zu ihm: Steh auf, nimm dein Bett und geh hin!9Und sogleich wurde der Mensch gesund und nahm sein Bett und ging hin. Es war aber Sabbat an diesem Tag.10Da sprachen die Juden zu dem, der geheilt worden war: Heute ist Sabbat, es ist dir nicht erlaubt, dein Bett zu tragen. (2Mo 20,10; Jer 17,21)11Er aber antwortete ihnen: Der mich gesund gemacht hat, sprach zu mir: Nimm dein Bett und geh hin!12Sie fragten ihn: Wer ist der Mensch, der zu dir gesagt hat: Nimm dein Bett und geh hin?13Der aber geheilt worden war, wusste nicht, wer es war; denn Jesus war fortgegangen, da so viel Volk an dem Ort war.14Danach fand ihn Jesus im Tempel und sprach zu ihm: Siehe, du bist gesund geworden; sündige nicht mehr, dass dir nicht etwas Schlimmeres widerfahre. (Joh 8,11)15Der Mensch ging hin und berichtete den Juden, es sei Jesus, der ihn gesund gemacht habe.16Darum verfolgten die Juden Jesus, weil er dies am Sabbat getan hatte. (Mt 12,14)17Jesus aber antwortete ihnen: Mein Vater wirkt bis auf diesen Tag, und ich wirke auch. (Joh 9,4)18Darum trachteten die Juden noch mehr danach, ihn zu töten, weil er nicht allein den Sabbat brach, sondern auch sagte, Gott sei sein Vater, und machte sich selbst Gott gleich. (Joh 7,30; Joh 10,33)
Die Vollmacht des Sohnes
19Da antwortete Jesus und sprach zu ihnen: Wahrlich, wahrlich, ich sage euch: Der Sohn kann nichts von sich aus tun, sondern nur, was er den Vater tun sieht; denn was dieser tut, das tut in gleicher Weise auch der Sohn. (Joh 3,11; Joh 3,32)20Denn der Vater hat den Sohn lieb und zeigt ihm alles, was er tut, und wird ihm noch größere Werke zeigen, sodass ihr euch verwundern werdet. (Joh 3,35)21Denn wie der Vater die Toten auferweckt und macht sie lebendig, so macht auch der Sohn lebendig, welche er will.22Denn der Vater richtet niemand, sondern hat alles Gericht dem Sohn übergeben, (Dan 7,13; Apg 10,42; Apg 17,31)23damit alle den Sohn ehren, wie sie den Vater ehren. Wer den Sohn nicht ehrt, der ehrt den Vater nicht, der ihn gesandt hat. (Phil 2,10; 1Joh 2,23)24Wahrlich, wahrlich, ich sage euch: Wer mein Wort hört und glaubt dem, der mich gesandt hat, der hat das ewige Leben und kommt nicht in das Gericht, sondern er ist vom Tode zum Leben hindurchgedrungen. (Joh 3,16; Joh 3,18)25Wahrlich, wahrlich, ich sage euch: Es kommt die Stunde und ist schon jetzt, dass die Toten hören werden die Stimme des Sohnes Gottes, und die sie hören, die werden leben. (Eph 2,5)26Denn wie der Vater das Leben hat in sich selber, so hat er auch dem Sohn gegeben, das Leben zu haben in sich selber; (Joh 1,1)27und er hat ihm Vollmacht gegeben, das Gericht zu halten, weil er der Menschensohn ist. (Dan 7,13)28Wundert euch darüber nicht. Es kommt die Stunde, in der alle, die in den Gräbern sind, seine Stimme hören werden,29und es werden hervorgehen, die Gutes getan haben, zur Auferstehung des Lebens, die aber Böses getan haben, zur Auferstehung des Gerichts. (Dan 12,2; Mt 25,46; 2Kor 5,10)30Ich kann nichts von mir aus tun. Wie ich höre, so richte ich, und mein Gericht ist gerecht; denn ich suche nicht meinen Willen, sondern den Willen dessen, der mich gesandt hat. (Joh 6,38)
Die Zeugen für den Sohn
31Wenn ich von mir selbst zeuge, so ist mein Zeugnis nicht wahr.32Ein anderer ist’s, der von mir zeugt; und ich weiß, dass das Zeugnis wahr ist, das er von mir gibt. (1Joh 5,9)33Ihr habt zu Johannes geschickt, und er hat die Wahrheit bezeugt. (Joh 1,19)34Ich aber nehme nicht von einem Menschen Zeugnis an; sondern ich sage das, damit ihr selig werdet.35Er war ein brennendes und strahlendes Licht; ihr aber wolltet eine kleine Weile fröhlich sein in seinem Licht.36Ich aber habe ein größeres Zeugnis als das des Johannes; denn die Werke, die mir der Vater gegeben hat, damit ich sie vollende, ebendiese Werke, die ich tue, zeugen von mir, dass mich der Vater gesandt hat. (Joh 3,2; Joh 10,25; Joh 10,38)37Und der Vater, der mich gesandt hat, hat von mir Zeugnis gegeben. Ihr habt niemals seine Stimme gehört noch seine Gestalt gesehen (Mt 3,17; Joh 1,18)38und sein Wort habt ihr nicht in euch wohnen; denn ihr glaubt dem nicht, den er gesandt hat.39Ihr sucht in den Schriften, denn ihr meint, ihr habt das ewige Leben darin; und sie sind’s, die von mir zeugen; (Lk 24,27; Lk 24,44; Joh 1,45; 2Tim 3,15)40aber ihr wollt nicht zu mir kommen, dass ihr das Leben hättet.41Ich nehme nicht Ehre von Menschen an;42aber ich kenne euch, dass ihr nicht Gottes Liebe in euch habt.43Ich bin gekommen in meines Vaters Namen, und ihr nehmt mich nicht an. Wenn ein anderer kommen wird in seinem eigenen Namen, den werdet ihr annehmen. (Mt 24,5)44Wie könnt ihr glauben, die ihr Ehre voneinander annehmt, und die Ehre, die von dem alleinigen Gott ist, sucht ihr nicht? (Joh 12,42; 1Thess 2,6)45Meint nicht, dass ich euch vor dem Vater verklagen werde; der euch verklagt, ist Mose, auf den ihr hofft. (5Mo 31,24)46Wenn ihr Mose glaubtet, so glaubtet ihr auch mir; denn er hat von mir geschrieben. (1Mo 3,15; 1Mo 49,10; 5Mo 18,15)47Wenn ihr aber seinen Schriften nicht glaubt, wie werdet ihr meinen Worten glauben? (Lk 16,31)
1Quelque temps plus tard, Jésus remonta à Jérusalem à l’occasion d’une fête juive.2Or, dans cette ville, près de la porte des Brebis, se trouvait une piscine[1] entourée de cinq galeries couvertes, appelée en hébreu Béthesda[2].3-4Ces galeries étaient remplies de malades qui y restaient couchés: des aveugles, des paralysés, des impotents[3].5Il y avait là un homme malade depuis trente-huit ans.6Jésus le vit couché; quand il sut qu’il était là depuis si longtemps, il lui demanda: Veux-tu être guéri?7– Maître, répondit le malade, je n’ai personne pour me plonger dans la piscine quand l’eau commence à bouillonner. Le temps que je me traîne là-bas, un autre y arrive avant moi.8– Eh bien, lui dit Jésus, lève-toi, prends ta natte et marche!9A l’instant même l’homme fut guéri. Il prit sa natte et se mit à marcher. Mais cela se passait un jour de sabbat.10Les Juifs interpellèrent donc l’homme qui venait d’être guéri: C’est le sabbat! Tu n’as pas le droit de porter cette natte.11– Mais, répliqua-t-il, celui qui m’a guéri m’a dit: « Prends ta natte et marche. »12– Et qui t’a dit cela? lui demandèrent-ils.13Mais l’homme qui avait été guéri ignorait qui c’était, car Jésus avait disparu dans la foule qui se pressait en cet endroit.14Peu de temps après, Jésus le rencontra dans la cour du Temple. – Te voilà guéri, lui dit-il. Mais veille à ne plus pécher, pour qu’il ne t’arrive rien de pire.15Et l’homme alla annoncer aux Juifs que c’était Jésus qui l’avait guéri.
Le Père et le Fils
16Les Juifs se mirent donc à accuser Jésus parce qu’il avait fait cela le jour du sabbat.17Jésus leur répondit: Mon Père est à l’œuvre jusqu’à présent, et moi aussi je suis à l’œuvre.18Cette remarque fut pour eux une raison de plus pour chercher à le faire mourir car, non content de violer la loi sur le sabbat, il appelait encore Dieu son propre Père et se faisait ainsi l’égal de Dieu.19Jésus répondit à ces reproches en leur disant: Vraiment, je vous l’assure: le Fils ne peut rien faire de sa propre initiative; il agit seulement d’après ce qu’il voit faire au Père. Tout ce que fait le Père, le Fils le fait également,20car le Père aime le Fils et lui montre tout ce qu’il fait. Il lui montrera même des œuvres plus grandes que toutes celles que vous avez vues jusqu’à présent, et vous en serez stupéfaits.21En effet, comme le Père ressuscite les morts et donne la vie, ainsi le Fils, lui aussi, donne la vie à qui il veut.22De plus, ce n’est pas le Père qui prononce le jugement sur les hommes; il a remis tout jugement au Fils,23afin que tous les hommes honorent le Fils au même titre que le Père. Ne pas honorer le Fils, c’est ne pas honorer le Père qui l’a envoyé.24Oui, vraiment, je vous l’assure: celui qui écoute ce que je dis et qui place sa confiance dans le Père qui m’a envoyé, possède, dès à présent, la vie éternelle et il ne sera pas condamné; il est déjà passé de la mort à la vie.25Oui, vraiment, je vous l’assure: l’heure vient, et elle est déjà là, où les morts entendront la voix du Fils de Dieu, et tous ceux qui l’auront entendue vivront.26En effet, comme le Père possède la vie en lui-même, il a accordé au Fils d’avoir la vie en lui-même.27Et parce qu’il est le Fils de l’homme, il lui a donné autorité pour exercer le jugement.28Ne vous en étonnez pas: l’heure vient où tous ceux qui sont dans la tombe entendront la voix du Fils de l’homme.29Alors, ils en sortiront: ceux qui auront fait le bien ressusciteront pour la vie, ceux qui auront fait le mal ressusciteront pour être condamnés[4]. (Dan 12,2)30Pour moi, je ne peux rien faire de mon propre chef; je juge seulement comme le Père me l’indique. Et mon verdict est juste, car je ne cherche pas à réaliser mes propres désirs, mais à faire la volonté de celui qui m’a envoyé.
Les témoins du Fils
31Bien sûr, si j’étais seul à témoigner en ma faveur, mon témoignage ne serait pas vrai.32Mais j’ai un autre témoin[5] et je sais que son témoignage est vrai.33Vous avez envoyé une commission d’enquête auprès de Jean et il a rendu témoignage à la vérité[6].34Moi, je n’ai pas besoin d’un homme pour témoigner en ma faveur, mais je dis cela pour que vous, vous soyez sauvés.35Oui, Jean était vraiment comme un flambeau que l’on allume pour qu’il répande sa clarté. Mais vous, vous avez simplement voulu, pour un moment, vous réjouir à sa lumière.36Quant à moi, j’ai en ma faveur un témoignage qui a plus de poids que celui de Jean: c’est celui des œuvres que le Père m’a donné d’accomplir. Oui, ces œuvres que j’accomplis attestent clairement que le Père m’a envoyé.37De plus, le Père lui-même, qui m’a envoyé, a témoigné en ma faveur. Mais vous n’avez jamais entendu sa voix, ni vu sa face.38Sa parole n’habite pas en vous; la preuve, c’est que vous ne croyez pas en celui qu’il a envoyé.39Vous étudiez avec soin les Ecritures, parce que vous êtes convaincus d’en obtenir la vie éternelle. Or, précisément, ce sont elles qui témoignent de moi.40Mais voilà: vous ne voulez pas venir à moi pour recevoir la vie.41Je ne cherche pas les honneurs de la part des hommes.42Seulement, je constate une chose: au fond de vous-mêmes, vous n’avez pas d’amour pour Dieu.43Je suis venu au nom de mon Père, et vous ne me recevez pas. Si un autre vient en son propre nom, vous le recevrez!44D’ailleurs, comment pourriez-vous parvenir à la foi alors que vous cherchez à être honorés les uns par les autres et que vous ne recherchez pas la gloire qui vient de Dieu seul?45N’allez surtout pas croire que je serai moi votre accusateur auprès de mon Père; c’est Moïse qui vous accusera, oui, ce Moïse même en qui vous avez mis votre espérance.46En effet, si vous l’aviez réellement cru, vous m’auriez aussi cru, car il a parlé de moi dans ses livres.47Si vous ne croyez même pas à ses écrits, comment croirez-vous à mes paroles?

Jesus Is Equal with God
18This was why the Jews were seeking all the more to kill him, because not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God. (Joh 5,16; Joh 7,1; Joh 10,33; Röm 8,32; Phil 2,6)
The Authority of the Son
19So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of his own accord, but only what he sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father[5] does, that the Son does likewise. (Joh 5,30; Joh 16,13)20For the Father loves the Son and shows him all that he himself is doing. And greater works than these will he show him, so that you may marvel. (Mt 3,17; Joh 3,35; Joh 7,21; Joh 10,17; Joh 14,12; Joh 15,9; Joh 15,10; Joh 17,23)21For as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so also the Son gives life to whom he will. (5Mo 32,39; Joh 6,33; Joh 11,25; Röm 4,17; Röm 8,11; Röm 9,18; 2Kor 1,9)22For the Father judges no one, but has given all judgment to the Son, (Joh 5,27; Joh 9,39; Apg 3,17; Apg 10,42; Apg 17,2; Apg 17,31)23that all may honor the Son, just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him. Witnesses to Jesus
30“I can do nothing on my own. As I hear, I judge, and my judgment is just, because I seek not my own will but the will of him who sent me. (Mt 26,39; Joh 4,34; Joh 5,19; Joh 6,38; Joh 7,18; Joh 8,16; Joh 8,28; Joh 14,10; Röm 15,3)31If I alone bear witness about myself, my testimony is not true. (Joh 8,13; Joh 8,14; Joh 8,18; Joh 8,54; Joh 18,21)32There is another who bears witness about me, and I know that the testimony that he bears about me is true. (Joh 5,37; Joh 7,28; Joh 7,29)33You sent to John, and he has borne witness to the truth. (Joh 1,7; Joh 1,19)34Not that the testimony that I receive is from man, but I say these things so that you may be saved. (1Joh 5,9)35He was a burning and shining lamp, and you were willing to rejoice for a while in his light. (Mt 13,20; Mt 21,26; 2Petr 1,19)36But the testimony that I have is greater than that of John. For the works that the Father has given me to accomplish, the very works that I am doing, bear witness about me that the Father has sent me. (1Joh 2,14; 1Joh 4,13; 1Joh 4,14; 1Joh 5,10)39You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about me, (Lk 24,27; Apg 17,11; 2Tim 3,15)40yet you refuse to come to me that you may have life. (Mt 23,37; Lk 13,34; Joh 3,19; Joh 5,43; Joh 7,17)41I do not receive glory from people. (Mt 6,1; Mt 6,2; Joh 5,34; 1Thess 2,6)42But I know that you do not have the love of God within you. (Lk 11,42; Joh 2,24; Joh 2,25; Jud 1,21)43I have come in my Father’s name, and you do not receive me. If another comes in his own name, you will receive him. (Mt 24,5; Joh 1,11; Joh 3,11; Joh 3,32; Joh 10,25; Joh 12,13; Joh 17,12)44How can you believe, when you receive glory from one another and do not seek the glory that comes from the only God? (Joh 17,3; Röm 2,29)45Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father. There is one who accuses you: Moses, on whom you have set your hope. (Joh 9,28; Joh 9,29; Röm 2,17)46For if you believed Moses, you would believe me; for he wrote of me. (4Mo 21,9; 5Mo 18,15; Lk 12,41; Lk 24,27; Joh 5,47)47But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe my words?” (Lk 16,31)
