The Words of Agur

1 The words of Agur son of Jakeh. The oracle.^[1] The man declares, I am weary, O God; I am weary, O God, and worn out.^[2] 2 Surely I am too stupid to be a man. I have not the understanding of a man. (Ps 49:10) 3 I have not learned wisdom, nor have I knowledge of the Holy One. (Pr 9:10) 4 Who has ascended to heaven and come down? Who has gathered the wind in his fists? Who has wrapped up the waters in a garment? Who has established all the ends of the earth? What is his name, and what is his son’s name? Surely you know! 5 Every word of God proves true; he is a shield to those who take refuge in him. (Ps 3:3; Ps 12:6; Ps 18:30) 6 Do not add to his words, lest he rebuke you and you be found a liar. (De 4:2; De 12:32; Re 22:18) 7 Two things I ask of you; deny them not to me before I die: (Ge 45:28) 8 Remove far from me falsehood and lying; give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with the food that is needful for me, (Job 23:12; Mt 6:11; Lu 11:3) 9 lest I be full and deny you and say, “Who is the Lord?” or lest I be poor and steal and profane the name of my God. 10 Do not slander a servant to his master, lest he curse you, and you be held guilty. (Ps 15:3; Ps 101:5; Ec 7:21) 11 There are those^[3] who curse their fathers and do not bless their mothers. (Ex 21:17; Pr 20:20; Pr 30:17) 12 There are those who are clean in their own eyes but are not washed of their filth. (Ps 101:5) 14 There are those whose teeth are swords, whose fangs are knives, to devour the poor from off the earth, the needy from among mankind. 16 Sheol, the barren womb, the land never satisfied with water, and the fire that never says, “Enough.” (Ge 30:1; Pr 27:20) 17 The eye that mocks a father and scorns to obey a mother will be picked out by the ravens of the valley and eaten by the vultures. 18 Three things are too wonderful for me; four I do not understand: (Job 42:3; Pr 30:15) 19 the way of an eagle in the sky, the way of a serpent on a rock, the way of a ship on the high seas, and the way of a man with a virgin. 20 This is the way of an adulteress: she eats and wipes her mouth and says, “I have done no wrong.” 21 Under three things the earth trembles; under four it cannot bear up: (Pr 30:15; Joe 2:10; Am 8:8) 22 a slave when he becomes king, and a fool when he is filled with food; (Pr 19:10; Pr 30:9) 23 an unloved woman when she gets a husband, and a maidservant when she displaces her mistress. (De 21:15; Isa 54:1; Isa 62:4) 24 Four things on earth are small, but they are exceedingly wise: (Pr 30:15) 25 the ants are a people not strong, yet they provide their food in the summer; (Pr 6:6) 26 the rock badgers are a people not mighty, yet they make their homes in the cliffs; (Le 11:5; Ps 104:18) 27 the locusts have no king, yet all of them march in rank; (Pr 6:7; Joe 2:7; Joe 2:25) 28 the lizard you can take in your hands, yet it is in kings’ palaces. 29 Three things are stately in their tread; four are stately in their stride: (Pr 6:16; Pr 30:15; Pr 30:18; Pr 30:21)

30 the lion, which is mightiest among beasts and does not turn back before any; (Job 39:22) 31 the strutting rooster,^[5] the he-goat, and a king whose army is with him.^[6] (Job 40:16) 32 If you have been foolish, exalting yourself, or if you have been devising evil, put your hand on your mouth. (Job 21:5; Mic 7:16) 33 For pressing milk produces curds, pressing the nose produces blood, and pressing anger produces strife.

سخنان آگور

1 اینها سخنان گزيدهٔ آگور، پسر ياقه است خطاب به ايتیئيل و اوكال: 2 من نادانترين و بیفهمترين آدميان هستم. 3 حكمتی در من نيست و شناختی از خدا ندارم. 4 آن كيست كه آسمان و زمين را زير پا میگذارد؟ آن كيست كه باد را در دست خود نگه میدارد و آبها را در ردای خود میپيچد؟ آن كيست كه حدود زمين را برقرار كرده است؟ نامش چيست و پسرش چه نام دارد؟ اگر میدانی بگو! 5 سخنان خدا تمام پاک و مبراست. او مانند يک سپر از تمام كسانی كه به او پناه میبرند محافظت میكند. 6 به سخنان او چيزی اضافه نكن، مبادا تو را توبيخ نمايد و تو دروغگو قلمداد شوی. 7 ای خدا، قبل از آنكه بميرم دو چيز از تو میطلبم: 8 مرا از دروغ گفتن حفظ كن و مرا نه تهيدست بگردان و نه ثروتمند، بلكه روزی مرا به من بده؛ 9 چون اگر ثروتمند شوم ممكن است تو را انكار كنم و بگويم: «خداوند كيست؟» و اگر تهيدست گردم امكان دارد دزدی كنم و نام تو را بیحرمت نمايم. 10 هرگز از كسی نزد كارفرمايش بدگويی نكن، مبادا به نفرين او گرفتار شوی. 11 هستند كسانی كه پدر و مادر خود را نفرين میكنند. 12 هستند كسانی كه خود را پاک میدانند در حالی كه به گناه آلودهاند. 13 هستند كسانی كه از نگاهشان كبر و غرور میبارد، 14 هستند كسانی كه دندانهای خود را تيز میكنند تا به جان مردم فقير بيفتند و آنها را ببلعند. 15 در دنيا چهار چيز مثل زالوست كه هر چه میخورد سير نمیشود: 16 دنيای مردگان، رحم نازا، زمين بیآب، آتش مشتعل. 17 كسی كه پدر خود را مسخره كند و مادرش را تحقير نمايد، كلاغها چشمانش را از كاسه در میآورند و لاشخورها بدنش را میخورند. 18 چهار چيز برای من بسيار عجيبند و من آنها را نمیفهمم: 19 پرواز عقاب در آسمان، خزيدن مار روی صخره، عبور كشتی از دريا، و به وجود آمدن عشق بين زن و مرد. 20 زن بدكاره زنا میكند و با بیشرمی میگويد: «گناهی نكردهام!» 21 چهار چيز است كه زمين تاب تحملش را ندارد و از شنيدنش میلرزد: 22 بردهای كه پادشاه شود، احمقی كه سير و توانگر گردد، 23 زن بداخلاقی كه شوهر كرده باشد، و كنيزی كه جای بانوی خود را بگيرد. 24 در زمين چهار موجود كوچک و دانا وجود دارند: 25 مورچهها كه ضعيف هستند ولی برای زمستان خوراک ذخيره میكنند، 26 گوركنها كه ناتوانند اما در ميان صخرهها برای خود لانه میسازند، 27 ملخها كه رهبری ندارند ولی در دستههای منظم حركت میكنند، 28 و مارمولكها كه میتوان آنها را در دست گرفت، اما حتی به كاخ پادشاهان نيز راه میيابند. 29 چهار موجود هستند كه راه رفتنشان باوقار است: 30 شير كه سلطان حيوانات است و از هيچ چيز نمیترسد، 31 طاووس، بز نر، و پادشاهی كه سپاهيانش همراه او هستند. 32 اگر از روی حماقت مغرور شدهای و اگر نقشههای پليد در سر پروراندهای، به خود بيا و از اين كارت دست بكش. 33 از زدن شير، كره به دست میآيد؛ از ضربه زدن به دماغ خون جاری میشود؛ و از برانگيختن خشم، نزاع درمیگيرد.
