Kdo si nabral vítr do hrstí? Kdo svázal vody do pláště? Kdo vytyčil všechny dálavy země? Jaké je jeho jméno a jaké je jméno jeho syna? Vždyť je znáš. 5 Všechna Boží řeč je protříbená, on je štítem těch, kteří se k němu utíkají. 6 K jeho slovům nic nepřidávej, jinak tě potrestá a budeš shledán lhářem. 7 O dvě věci tě prosím; neodpírej mi je, dříve než umřu: 8 Vzdal ode mne šálení a lživé slovo, nedávej mi chudobu ani bohatství! Opatřuj mě chlebem podle mé potřeby, 9 tak abych přesycen neselhal a neřekl: „Kdo je Hospodin?“ ani abych z chudoby nekradl a nezneuctil jméno svého Boha. 10 Nepomlouvej otroka před jeho pánem, aby ti nezlořečil a ty bys pykal za svou vinu. 11 Je pokolení, které zlořečí svému otci a své matce nežehná, 12 pokolení, které se pokládá za čisté, ale není umyto od své špíny, 13 pokolení, jež zvysoka hledí a přezíravě zvedá víčka, 14 pokolení, jehož zuby jsou meče a jehož špičáky jsou dýky, aby požíralo v zemi utištěné a ubožáky mezi lidmi.
ČÍSELNÁ PŘÍSLOVÍ
15 Upír má dvě dcery: „Dej! Dej!“ – Tyto tři věci se nenasytí a čtyři neřeknou: „Dost“: 16 podsvětí a neplodné lůno, země, která se nenasytí vodou, a oheň, jenž neřekne: „Dost!“ 17 Oko, které se vysmívá otci a pohrdá poslušností matky, vyklovou havrani od potoka, nebo je sezobou supí mláďata. 18 Tyto tři věci mám za podivuhodné a čtyři nemohu pochopit: 19 cestu orla po nebi, cestu hada po skále, cestu lodi v srdci moře a cestu muže při dívce. 20 Stejně je tomu s cestou cizoložné ženy: pojí, otře si ústa a řekne: „Nedopustila jsem se ničemnosti.“ 21 Pod třemi věcmi se chvěje země a čtyři nemůže unést: 22 otroka, který kraluje, blouda, který se přesytí chlebem, 23 vdanou ženu, která není milována, a služku, která vyžene svou paní. 24 Tito čtyři jsou na zemi nejmenší, a přece znamenití mudrci: 25 mravenci, národ bez síly, a přece si zajišťuje v létě pokrm; 26 damani, národ bez moci, a přece si staví obydlí v skalách; 27 kobylky, které nemají krále, a přece všechny vytáhnou válečně seřazeny; 28 ještěrka, kterou můžeš vzít do ruky, a přece bývá v královských palácích. 29 Tito tři pěkně vykračují a čtyři pěkně pochodují: 30 lev, bohatýr mezi zvířaty, před nikým neustoupí; 31 oř silných beder nebo kozel a král se svým válečným lidem. 32 Jsi bloud, vynášíš-li se; máš-li nějaký záměr, ruku na ústa! 33 Stloukáním smetany vznikne máslo, tlak na nos přivodí krvácení, tlak hněvu vyvolá spor.
