1 Als es aber Morgen geworden war, hielten alle obersten Priester und die Ältesten des Volkes einen Rat gegen Jesus, um ihn zu töten. (Mt 26,3; Mt 26,66) 2 Und sie banden ihn, führten ihn ab und lieferten ihn dem Statthalter[1] Pontius Pilatus aus. (Mt 20,19; Lk 3,1; Apg 3,13; Apg 13,28) 3 Als nun Judas, der ihn verraten hatte, sah, dass er verurteilt war, reute es ihn; und er brachte die 30 Silberlinge den obersten Priestern und den Ältesten zurück (Mt 26,15; Mt 27,5; 2Kor 7,10) 4 und sprach: Ich habe gesündigt, dass ich unschuldiges Blut verraten habe! Sie aber sprachen: Was geht das uns an? Da sieh du zu! (1Mo 42,22; Mt 23,35; Mt 27,24) 5 Da warf er die Silberlinge im Tempel hin und machte sich davon, ging hin und erhängte sich. (2Sam 17,23; Ps 55,24) 6 Die obersten Priester aber nahmen die Silberlinge und sprachen: Wir dürfen sie nicht in den Opferkasten legen, weil es Blutgeld ist! (Mt 23,24) 7 Nachdem sie aber Rat gehalten hatten, kauften sie dafür den Acker des Töpfers als Begräbnisstätte für die Fremdlinge. (Mt 12,14; Mt 22,15; Mt 26,4; Mt 28,12) 8 Daher wird jener Acker »Blutacker« genannt bis zum heutigen Tag. 9 Da wurde erfüllt, was durch den Propheten Jeremia gesagt ist, der spricht: »Und sie nahmen die 30 Silberlinge, den Wert dessen, der geschätzt wurde, den die Kinder Israels geschätzt hatten, (Sach 11,13; Mt 26,56) 10 und gaben sie für den Acker des Töpfers, wie der Herr mir befohlen hatte.« 11 Jesus aber stand vor dem Statthalter; und der Statthalter fragte ihn und sprach: Bist du der König der Juden? Jesus sprach zu ihm: Du sagst es! (Mt 2,2; Joh 19,19; 1Tim 6,13) 12 Und als er von den obersten Priestern und den Ältesten verklagt wurde, antwortete er nichts. (Mt 26,62) 13 Da sprach Pilatus zu ihm: Hörst du nicht, was sie alles gegen dich aussagen? (Joh 19,10) 14 Und er antwortete ihm auch nicht auf ein einziges Wort, sodass der Statthalter sich sehr verwunderte. (Hi 17,9; Kla 3,28; Lk 23,9) 15 Aber anlässlich des Festes pflegte der Statthalter der Volksmenge einen Gefangenen freizugeben, welchen sie wollten. 16 Sie hatten aber damals einen berüchtigten Gefangenen namens Barabbas. 17 Als sie nun versammelt waren, sprach Pilatus zu ihnen: Welchen wollt ihr, dass ich euch freilasse, Barabbas oder Jesus, den man Christus nennt? 18 Denn er wusste, dass sie ihn aus Neid ausgeliefert hatten. (Joh 11,47; 1Joh 3,12) 19 Als er aber auf dem Richterstuhl saß, sandte seine Frau zu ihm und ließ ihm sagen: Habe du nichts zu schaffen mit diesem Gerechten; denn ich habe heute im Traum seinetwegen viel gelitten! (Hi 7,14; Hi 33,15; Mt 2,12; Joh 19,13; Apg 3,14; Apg 25,6; Jak 5,6) 20 Aber die obersten Priester und die Ältesten überredeten die Volksmenge, den Barabbas zu erbitten, Jesus aber umbringen zu lassen. (Apg 3,14) 21 Der Statthalter aber antwortete und sprach zu ihnen: Welchen von diesen beiden wollt ihr, dass ich euch freilasse? Sie sprachen: Den Barabbas! 22 Pilatus spricht zu ihnen: Was soll ich denn mit Jesus tun, den man Christus nennt? Sie sprachen alle zu ihm: Kreuzige ihn! (Apg 13,28) 23 Da sagte der Statthalter: Was hat er denn Böses getan? Sie aber schrien noch viel mehr und sprachen: Kreuzige ihn! (Lk 23,41; Joh 8,46; Joh 14,30) 24 Als nun Pilatus sah, dass er nichts ausrichtete, sondern dass vielmehr ein Aufruhr entstand, nahm er Wasser und wusch sich vor der Volksmenge die Hände und sprach: Ich bin unschuldig an dem Blut dieses Gerechten; seht ihr zu! (5Mo 21,6; Jer 2,22; Mt 27,19) 25 Und das ganze Volk antwortete und sprach: Sein Blut komme über uns und über unsere Kinder! (3Mo 19,10; Jos 2,19; Kla 5,7; Mt 23,35; Apg 5,28) 26 Da gab er ihnen den Barabbas frei; Jesus aber ließ er geißeln und übergab ihn zur Kreuzigung. (Jes 50,6; Mt 20,19) 27 Da nahmen die Kriegsknechte des Statthalters Jesus in das Prätorium und versammelten die ganze Schar um ihn.[2] (Joh 18,28) 28 Und sie zogen ihn aus und legten ihm einen Purpurmantel um 29 und flochten eine Krone aus Dornen, setzten sie auf sein Haupt, gaben ihm ein Rohr in die rechte Hand und beugten vor ihm die Knie, verspotteten ihn und sprachen: Sei gegrüßt, König der Juden! (Ps 69,21) 30 Dann spuckten sie ihn an und nahmen das Rohr und schlugen ihn auf das Haupt. (Mi 4,14; Mt 26,67; 2Kor 12,10; Hebr 13,13) 31 Und nachdem sie ihn verspottet hatten, zogen sie ihm den Mantel aus und legten ihm seine Kleider an. Und sie führten ihn ab, um ihn zu kreuzigen. (Jes 53,7) 32 Als sie aber hinauszogen, fanden sie einen Mann von Kyrene namens Simon; den zwangen sie, ihm das Kreuz zu tragen. (Mt 21,39; Hebr 13,12) 33 Und als sie an den Platz kamen, den man Golgatha nennt, das heißt »Schädelstätte«, 34 gaben sie ihm Essig mit Galle vermischt zu trinken; und als er es gekostet hatte, wollte er nicht trinken. (Ps 69,22) 35 Nachdem sie ihn nun gekreuzigt hatten, teilten sie seine Kleider unter sich und warfen das Los, damit erfüllt würde, was durch den Propheten gesagt ist: »Sie haben meine Kleider unter sich geteilt, und das Los über mein Gewand geworfen«.[3] (Ps 22,19; Joh 3,14; Gal 3,13; Phil 2,8) 36 Und sie saßen dort und bewachten ihn. 37 Und sie befestigten über seinem Haupt die Inschrift seiner Schuld: »Dies ist Jesus, der König der Juden«. (Mt 27,11; Mt 27,29; Joh 19,19) 38 Dann wurden mit ihm zwei Räuber gekreuzigt, einer zur Rechten, der andere zur Linken. (Jes 53,12) 39 Aber die Vorübergehenden lästerten ihn, schüttelten den Kopf (Ps 22,8; Ps 109,25; Kla 1,12) 40 und sprachen: Der du den Tempel zerstörst und in drei Tagen aufbaust, rette dich selbst! Wenn du Gottes Sohn bist, so steige vom Kreuz herab! (Mt 4,3; Mt 4,6; Mt 26,61; Mt 26,63; Mt 27,43) 41 Gleicherweise spotteten aber auch die obersten Priester samt den Schriftgelehrten und Ältesten und sprachen: 42 Andere hat er gerettet, sich selbst kann er nicht retten! Ist er der König Israels, so steige er nun vom Kreuz herab, und wir wollen ihm glauben! (Mt 26,53; Lk 4,23; Lk 23,2; Joh 1,49; Joh 10,11; Joh 10,18; 1Kor 1,18) 43 Er hat auf Gott vertraut; der befreie ihn jetzt, wenn er Lust an ihm hat; denn er hat ja gesagt: Ich bin Gottes Sohn! (Mt 27,40; Joh 5,17; Joh 10,30; Joh 10,36) 44 Ebenso schmähten ihn auch die Räuber, die mit ihm gekreuzigt waren. 45 Aber von der sechsten Stunde an kam eine Finsternis über das ganze Land bis zur neunten Stunde. (Am 8,9; Offb 8,12) 46 Und um die neunte Stunde rief Jesus mit lauter Stimme: Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani, das heißt: »Mein Gott, mein Gott, warum hast du mich verlassen?«[4] (Ps 22,2; Jes 53,10; Jes 54,7) 47 Etliche der Anwesenden sprachen, als sie es hörten: Der ruft den Elia! 48 Und sogleich lief einer von ihnen, nahm einen Schwamm, füllte ihn mit Essig, steckte ihn auf ein Rohr und gab ihm zu trinken. (Rut 2,14; Ps 69,21) 49 Die Übrigen aber sprachen: Halt, lasst uns sehen, ob Elia kommt, um ihn zu retten! 50 Jesus aber schrie nochmals mit lauter Stimme und gab den Geist auf. (Joh 10,18) 51 Und siehe, der Vorhang im Tempel riss von oben bis unten entzwei, und die Erde erbebte, und die Felsen spalteten sich. (2Mo 26,31) 52 Und die Gräber öffneten sich, und viele Leiber der entschlafenen Heiligen wurden auferweckt (Joh 5,28) 53 und gingen aus den Gräbern hervor nach seiner Auferstehung und kamen in die heilige Stadt und erschienen vielen. (1Kor 15,20; 1Thess 4,14) 54 Als aber der Hauptmann und die, welche mit ihm Jesus bewachten, das Erdbeben sahen und was da geschah, fürchteten sie sich sehr und sprachen: Wahrhaftig, dieser war Gottes Sohn! (Mt 3,17; Mt 17,5; Joh 3,16; Röm 1,3; 1Joh 4,9) 55 Es waren aber dort viele Frauen, die von ferne zusahen, welche Jesus von Galiläa her gefolgt waren und ihm gedient hatten; (Ps 38,12; Lk 8,2; Joh 19,25) 56 unter ihnen waren Maria Magdalena und Maria, die Mutter des Jakobus und Joses, und die Mutter der Söhne des Zebedäus. (Joh 20,1) 57 Als es nun Abend geworden war, kam ein reicher Mann von Arimathia namens Joseph, der auch ein Jünger Jesu geworden war. 58 Dieser ging zu Pilatus und bat um den Leib Jesu. Da befahl Pilatus, dass ihm der Leib gegeben werde. 59 Und Joseph nahm den Leib, wickelte ihn in reine Leinwand 60 und legte ihn in sein neues Grab, das er im Felsen hatte aushauen lassen; und er wälzte einen großen Stein vor den Eingang des Grabes und ging davon. (Jes 22,16; Jes 53,9; Mk 16,4; Apg 13,29) 61 Es waren aber dort Maria Magdalena und die andere Maria, die saßen dem Grab gegenüber. (Mt 27,56) 62 Am anderen Tag nun, der auf den Rüsttag folgt, versammelten sich die obersten Priester und die Pharisäer bei Pilatus (Joh 19,31) 63 und sprachen: Herr, wir erinnern uns, dass dieser Verführer sprach, als er noch lebte: Nach drei Tagen werde ich auferstehen. (Mt 12,40; Mt 16,21; Mt 17,23; Mt 20,19; Mt 27,64; Joh 7,12; Joh 7,47; Apg 3,17) 64 So befiehl nun, dass das Grab sicher bewacht wird bis zum dritten Tag, damit nicht etwa seine Jünger in der Nacht kommen, ihn stehlen und zum Volk sagen: Er ist aus den Toten auferstanden!, und der letzte Betrug schlimmer wird als der erste. (Mt 28,13) 65 Pilatus aber sprach zu ihnen: Ihr sollt eine Wache haben! Geht hin und bewacht es, so gut ihr könnt! 66 Da gingen sie hin, versiegelten den Stein und bewachten das Grab mit der Wache. (Spr 21,30; Dan 6,17; Mt 22,29; Mt 27,65; Mt 28,4; Mt 28,11)

1 When the morning was come, all the chief priests and elders of the people took counsel against Jesus to put him to death: 2 And when they had bound him, they led him away, and delivered him to Pontius Pilate the governor. 3 Then Judas, which had betrayeth him, when he saw that he was condemned, repented himself, and brought again the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders, 4 Saying, I have sinned in that I have betrayed the innocent blood. And they said, What is that to us? see thou to that. 5 And he cast down the pieces of silver in the temple, and departed, and went and hanged himself. 6 And the chief priests took the silver pieces, and said, It is not lawful for to put them into the treasury, because it is the price of blood. 7 And they took counsel, and bought with them the potter's field, to bury strangers in. 8 Wherefore that field was called, The field of blood, unto this day. 9 Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremy the prophet, saying, And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of him that was valued, whom they of the children of Israel did value; 10 And gave them for the potter's field, as the Lord appointed me. 11 And Jesus stood before the governor: and the governor asked him, saying, Art thou the King of the Jews? And Jesus said unto him, Thou sayest. 12 And when he was accused of the chief priests and elders, he answered nothing. 13 Then said Pilate unto him, Hearest thou not how many things they witness against thee? 14 And he answered him to never a word; insomuch that the governor marvelled greatly. 15 Now at that feast the governor was wont to release unto the people a prisoner, whom they would. 16 And they had then a notable prisoner, called Barabbas. 17 Therefore when they were gathered together, Pilate said unto them, Whom will ye that I release unto you? Barabbas, or Jesus which is called Christ? 18 For he knew that for envy they had delivered him. 19 When he was set down on the judgment seat, his wife sent unto him, saying, Have thou nothing to do with that just man: for I have suffered many things this day in a dream because of him. 20 But the chief priests and elders persuaded the multitude that they should ask Barabbas, and destroy Jesus. 21 The governor answered and said unto them, Whether of the twain will ye that I release unto you? They said, Barabbas. 22 Pilate saith unto them, What shall I do then with Jesus which is called Christ? They all say unto him, Let him be crucified. 23 And the governor said, Why, what evil hath he done? But they cried out the more, saying, Let him be crucified. 24 When Pilate saw that he could prevail nothing, but that rather a tumult was made, he took water, and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this just person: see ye to it. 25 Then answered all the people, and said, His blood be on us, and on our children. 26 Then released he Barabbas unto them: and when he had scourged Jesus, he delivered him to be crucified. 27 Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the common hall, and gathered unto him the whole band of soldiers. 28 And they stripped him, and put on him a scarlet robe. 29 And when they had platted a crown of thorns, they put it upon his head, and a reed in his right hand: and they bowed the knee before him, and mocked him, saying, Hail, King of the Jews! 30 And they spit upon him, and took the reed, and smote him on the head. 31 And after that they had mocked him, they took the robe off from him, and put his own raiment on him, and led him away to crucify him. 32 And as they came out, they found a man of Cyrene, Simon by name: him they compelled to bear his cross. 33 And when they were come unto a place called Golgotha, that is to say, a place of a skull, 34 They gave him vinegar to drink mingled with gall: and when he had tasted thereof, he would not drink. 35 And they crucified him, and parted his garments, casting lots: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, They parted my garments among them, and upon my vesture did they cast lots. 36 And sitting down they watched him there; 37 And set up over his head his accusation written, THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS. 38 Then were there two thieves crucified with him, one on the right hand, and another on the left. 39 And they that passed by reviled him, wagging their heads, 40 And saying, Thou that destroyest the temple, and buildest it in three days, save thyself. If thou be the Son of God, come down from the cross. 41 Likewise also the chief priests mocking him, with the scribes and elders, said, 42 He saved others; himself he cannot save. If he be the King of Israel, let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe him. 43 He trusted in God; let him deliver him now, if he will have him: for he said, I am the Son of God. 44 The thieves also, which were crucified with him, cast the same in his teeth. 45 Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land unto the ninth hour. 46 And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? 47 Some of them that stood there, when they heard that, said, This man calleth for Elias. 48 And straightway one of them ran, and took a spunge, and filled it with vinegar, and put it on a reed, and gave him to drink. 49 The rest said, Let be, let us see whether Elias will come to save him. 50 Jesus, when he had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost. 51 And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent; 52 And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose, 53 And came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared unto many. 54 Now when the centurion, and they that were with him, watching Jesus, saw the earthquake, and those things that were done, they feared greatly, saying, Truly this was the Son of God. 55 And many women were there beholding afar off, which followed Jesus from Galilee, ministering unto him: 56 Among which was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James and Joses, and the mother of Zebedee's children. 57 When the even was come, there came a rich man of Arimathaea, named Joseph, who also himself was Jesus' disciple: 58 He went to Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus. Then Pilate commanded the body to be delivered. 59 And when Joseph had taken the body, he wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, 60 And laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn out in the rock: and he rolled a great stone to the door of the sepulchre, and departed. 61 And there was Mary Magdalene, and the other Mary, sitting over against the sepulchre. 62 Now the next day, that followed the day of the preparation, the chief priests and Pharisees came together unto Pilate, 63 Saying, Sir, we remember that that deceiver said, while he was yet alive, After three days I will rise again. 64 Command therefore that the sepulchre be made sure until the third day, lest his disciples come by night, and steal him away, and say unto the people, He is risen from the dead: so the last error shall be worse than the first. 65 Pilate said unto them, Ye have a watch: go your way, make it as sure as ye can. 66 So they went, and made the sepulchre sure, sealing the stone, and setting a watch.

1 L’aube s’était levée. L’ensemble des chefs des prêtres et des responsables du peuple tinrent conseil contre Jésus pour le faire condamner à mort. (Mk 15,1; Lk 23,1; Joh 18,28) 2 Ils le firent lier et le conduisirent chez Pilate, le gouverneur, pour le remettre entre ses mains. 3 (voir En voyant que Jésus était condamné, Judas, qui l’avait trahi, fut pris de remords: il alla rapporter aux chefs des prêtres et aux responsables du peuple les trente pièces d’argent (Apg 1,18) 4 et leur dit: J’ai péché en livrant un innocent à la mort! Mais ils lui répliquèrent: Que nous importe? Cela te regarde! 5 Judas jeta les pièces d’argent dans le Temple, partit, et alla se pendre. 6 Les chefs des prêtres ramassèrent l’argent et déclarèrent: On n’a pas le droit de verser cette somme dans le trésor du Temple, car c’est le prix du sang[1]. 7 Ils tinrent donc conseil et décidèrent d’acquérir, avec cet argent, le « Champ-du-Potier » et d’en faire un cimetière pour les étrangers. 8 Voilà pourquoi ce terrain s’appelle encore de nos jours « le champ du sang ». 9 Ainsi s’accomplit la parole du prophète Jérémie: Ils ont pris les trente pièces d’argent, le prix auquel les descendants d’Israël l’ont estimé, 10 et ils les ont données pour acheter le champ du potier, comme le Seigneur me l’avait ordonné[2]. (Mk 15,2; Lk 23,2; Lk 23,13; Joh 18,29; Joh 19,4) 12 Mais ensuite, quand les chefs des prêtres et les responsables du peuple vinrent l’accuser, il ne répondit rien. 13 Alors Pilate lui dit: Tu n’entends pas tout ce qu’ils disent contre toi? 14 Mais, au grand étonnement du gouverneur, Jésus ne répondit pas même sur un seul point. 15 A chaque fête de la Pâque, le gouverneur avait l’habitude de relâcher un prisonnier, celui que la foule désignait. 16 Or, à ce moment-là, il y avait sous les verrous, un prisonnier célèbre nommé Barabbas[3]. 17 En voyant la foule rassemblée, Pilate lui demanda donc: Lequel de ces deux hommes voulez-vous que je vous relâche, Barabbas ou Jésus, qu’on appelle le Messie? 18 En effet, il s’était bien rendu compte que c’était par jalousie qu’on lui avait livré Jésus. 19 Pendant qu’il siégeait au tribunal, sa femme lui fit parvenir un message disant: Ne te mêle pas de l’affaire de ce juste, car cette nuit, j’ai été fort tourmentée par des rêves à cause de lui. 20 Cependant, les chefs des prêtres et les responsables du peuple persuadèrent la foule de réclamer la libération de Barabbas et l’exécution de Jésus. 21 Le gouverneur prit la parole et redemanda à la foule: Lequel des deux voulez-vous que je vous relâche? – Barabbas! crièrent-ils. 22 – Mais alors, insista Pilate, que dois-je faire de Jésus, qu’on appelle le Messie[4]? Et tous répondirent: Crucifie-le! 23 – Mais enfin, reprit Pilate, qu’a-t-il fait de mal? Eux, cependant, criaient de plus en plus fort: Crucifie-le! 24 Quand Pilate vit qu’il n’aboutissait à rien, mais qu’au contraire, l’agitation de la foule augmentait, il prit de l’eau et, devant la foule, se lava les mains en disant: Je ne suis pas responsable de la mort de cet homme. Cela vous regarde. 25 Et tout le peuple répondit: Que la responsabilité de sa mort retombe sur nous et sur nos enfants! 26 Alors Pilate leur relâcha Barabbas. Quant à Jésus, après l’avoir fait battre à coups de fouet, il le livra pour qu’on le crucifie. (Mk 15,16; Lk 23,11; Joh 19,2) 27 Les soldats du gouverneur traînèrent Jésus vers l’intérieur du palais et rassemblèrent toute la cohorte autour de lui. 28 Ils lui arrachèrent ses vêtements et le revêtirent d’un manteau écarlate. 29 Ils lui posèrent sur la tête une couronne tressée de rameaux épineux; dans sa main droite, ils placèrent un roseau en guise de sceptre. Ils s’agenouillèrent devant lui en disant sur un ton sarcastique: Salut, roi des Juifs! 30 Ils crachaient sur lui et, prenant le roseau, ils le frappaient à la tête. 31 Quand ils eurent fini de se moquer de lui, ils lui ôtèrent le manteau, lui remirent ses vêtements et l’emmenèrent pour le crucifier. 32 A la sortie de la ville, ils rencontrèrent un nommé Simon, originaire de Cyrène. Ils lui firent porter la croix de Jésus. (Mk 15,21; Lk 23,26; Joh 19,17) 33 Ils arrivèrent à un endroit nommé Golgotha (c’est-à-dire: « le lieu du crâne »). 34 Là, ils donnèrent à boire à Jésus du vin mélangé avec du fiel[5]; mais quand il l’eut goûté, il refusa de le boire. 35 Après l’avoir cloué sur la croix, les soldats se partagèrent ses vêtements en les tirant au sort. 36 Puis ils s’assirent pour monter la garde. 37 Ils avaient fixé au-dessus de la tête de Jésus un écriteau sur lequel était inscrit, comme motif de sa condamnation: « Celui-ci est Jésus, le roi des Juifs. » 38 Deux brigands furent crucifiés en même temps que lui, l’un à sa droite, l’autre à sa gauche. 39 Ceux qui passaient par là lui lançaient des insultes en secouant la tête, 40 et criaient: Hé, toi qui démolis le Temple et qui le reconstruis en trois jours, sauve-toi toi-même. Si tu es le Fils de Dieu, descends de la croix! 41 De même, les chefs des prêtres se moquaient de lui, avec les spécialistes de la Loi et les responsables du peuple, en disant: 42 Dire qu’il a sauvé les autres, et qu’il est incapable de se sauver lui-même! C’est ça le roi d’Israël? Qu’il descende donc de la croix; alors nous croirons en lui! 43 Il a mis sa confiance en Dieu. Eh bien, si Dieu trouve son plaisir en lui, qu’il le délivre[6]! N’a-t-il pas dit: « Je suis le Fils de Dieu »? (Ps 22,9) 44 Les brigands crucifiés avec lui l’insultaient, eux aussi, de la même manière. (Mk 15,33; Lk 23,44; Joh 19,25) 45 A partir de midi, et jusqu’à trois heures de l’après-midi, le pays entier[7] fut plongé dans l’obscurité. 46 Vers trois heures, Jésus cria d’une voix forte: Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? ce qui veut dire: Mon Dieu, mon Dieu, pourquoi m’as-tu abandonné[8]? (Ps 22,2) 47 En entendant ces paroles, quelques-uns de ceux qui étaient là disaient: Il appelle Elie! 48 L’un d’entre eux courut aussitôt prendre une éponge, qu’il imbiba de vinaigre et piqua au bout d’un roseau. Il la présenta à Jésus pour qu’il boive, 49 quand les autres lui dirent: Attends! On va bien voir si Elie vient le délivrer. 50 A ce moment, Jésus poussa de nouveau un grand cri et rendit l’esprit. 51 Et voici qu’au même instant, le rideau du Temple se déchira en deux, de haut en bas; la terre trembla, les rochers se fendirent. 52 Des tombes s’ouvrirent et les corps de beaucoup d’hommes fidèles à Dieu qui étaient morts ressuscitèrent. 53 Ils quittèrent leurs tombeaux et, après la résurrection de Jésus, ils entrèrent dans la ville sainte où beaucoup de personnes les virent. 54 En voyant le tremblement de terre et tout ce qui se passait, l’officier romain et les soldats qui gardaient Jésus furent saisis d’épouvante et dirent: Cet homme était vraiment le Fils de Dieu[9]! 55 Il y avait aussi là plusieurs femmes qui regardaient de loin; c’étaient celles qui avaient suivi Jésus depuis la Galilée[10], pour être à son service. 56 Parmi elles, Marie de Magdala, Marie, la mère de Jacques et de Joseph et la mère des fils de Zébédée. 57 Le soir venu, arriva un homme riche appelé Joseph, originaire de la ville d’Arimathée. Lui aussi était un disciple de Jésus. (Mk 15,42; Lk 23,50; Joh 19,38) 58 Il alla demander à Pilate le corps de Jésus. Alors Pilate donna l’ordre de le lui remettre. 59 Joseph prit donc le corps, l’enroula dans un drap de lin pur 60 et le déposa dans le tombeau tout neuf qu’il s’était fait tailler pour lui-même dans le roc. Puis il roula un grand bloc de pierre devant l’entrée du tombeau et s’en alla. 61 Il y avait là Marie de Magdala et l’autre Marie, assises en face de la tombe. 62 Le lendemain, le jour qui suivait la préparation du sabbat[11], les chefs des prêtres et des pharisiens se rendirent ensemble chez Pilate 63 pour lui dire: Excellence, nous nous souvenons que cet imposteur a dit, pendant qu’il était encore en vie: « Après trois jours, je ressusciterai. » 64 Fais donc surveiller étroitement la tombe jusqu’à ce troisième jour: il faut à tout prix éviter que ses disciples viennent dérober le corps pour dire ensuite au peuple qu’il est ressuscité. Cette dernière supercherie serait encore pire que la première. 65 Pilate leur déclara: D’accord! Prenez un corps de garde[12] et assurez la protection de ce tombeau à votre guise. 66 Ils se rendirent donc au tombeau et le firent surveiller après avoir apposé les scellés sur la pierre en présence de la garde.
