The Words of Agur

1 The words of Agur son of Jakeh. The oracle.^[1] The man declares, I am weary, O God; I am weary, O God, and worn out.^[2] 2 Surely I am too stupid to be a man. I have not the understanding of a man. (Ps 49:10) 3 I have not learned wisdom, nor have I knowledge of the Holy One. (Pr 9:10) 4 Who has ascended to heaven and come down? Who has gathered the wind in his fists? Who has wrapped up the waters in a garment? Who has established all the ends of the earth? What is his name, and what is his son’s name? Surely you know! 5 Every word of God proves true; he is a shield to those who take refuge in him. (Ps 3:3; Ps 12:6; Ps 18:30) 6 Do not add to his words, lest he rebuke you and you be found a liar. 10 Do not slander a servant to his master, lest he curse you, and you be held guilty. (Ps 15:3; Ps 101:5; Ec 7:21) 11 There are those^[3] who curse their fathers and do not bless their mothers. 16 Sheol, the barren womb, the land never satisfied with water, and the fire that never says, “Enough.” (Ge 30:1; Pr 27:20) 17 The eye that mocks a father and scorns to obey a mother will be picked out by the ravens of the valley and eaten by the vultures. 30 the lion, which is mightiest among beasts and does not turn back before any; (Job 39:22) 31 the strutting rooster,^[5] the he-goat, and a king whose army is with him.^[6] (Job 40:16) 32 If you have been foolish, exalting yourself, or if you have been devising evil, put your hand on your mouth. (Job 21:5; Mic 7:16) 33 For pressing milk produces curds, pressing the nose produces blood, and pressing anger produces strife.

1 Die folgenden Sprüche stammen von Agur Ben-Jake aus Massa.^[1] Das Wort des Mannes an Itiël:^[2] „Ohnmächtig bin ich, Gott, / ohnmächtig! Was kann ich überhaupt? 2 Ich bin dumm wie ein Stück Vieh und kein Mann, / mir fehlt der Menschenverstand. 3 Ich habe keine Weisheit gelernt / und was der Heilige weiß, erkenne ich nicht.“ 4 Wer stieg je in den Himmel hinauf und kam wieder herab? / Wer hat den Wind in seine Fäuste gepackt? / Wer band das Wasser in ein Tuch? / Wer hat die Grenzen der Erde bestimmt? / Wie heißt dieser Mann und wer ist sein Sohn? / Sag es mir, wenn du es weißt! 5 Alles, was Gott sagt, ist klar und rein. / Wer Zuflucht bei ihm sucht, wird in Sicherheit sein. 6 Füg seinen Worten nichts Eigenes hinzu, / sonst weist er dich zurecht, und du stehst als Lügner da. 7 Um zweierlei bitte ich dich; schenke es mir, / solange ich am Leben bin: 8 Falschheit und Lügenwort halte mir fern! / Armut und Reichtum gib mir bitte nicht! / Lass mich das Brot, das ich brauche, genießen, 9 damit ich nicht satt dich verleugne und sage: „Wer ist denn schon Jahwe?“ / und auch nicht verarmt anfange zu stehlen und mich so am Namen meines Gottes vergreife. 10 Verleumde den Sklaven nicht bei seinem Herrn, / sonst verflucht er dich und du musst es büßen. 11 Was ist das für eine Generation, die den Vater verflucht / und der Mutter kein gutes Wort mehr schenkt; 12 die sich selbst für fehlerfrei hält, / doch besudelt ist mit persönlicher Schuld; 13 eine Generation, die hoch von sich denkt / und verachtungsvoll blickt; 14 deren Zähne Schwerter sind / und deren Gebiss scharfe Messer, / um die Armen im Land zu verschlingen, / die Hilflosen unter den Menschen!
