1“And now, O Israel, listen to the statutes and the rules[1] that I am teaching you, and do them, that you may live, and go in and take possession of the land that the Lord, the God of your fathers, is giving you. Idolatry Forbidden
15“Therefore watch yourselves very carefully. Since you saw no form on the day that the Lord spoke to you at Horeb out of the midst of the fire, (De 4:12; Jos 23:11)16beware lest you act corruptly by making a carved image for yourselves, in the form of any figure, the likeness of male or female, (Ex 20:4; De 4:23; De 4:25; De 5:8; Ac 17:29; Ro 1:23)17the likeness of any animal that is on the earth, the likeness of any winged bird that flies in the air,18the likeness of anything that creeps on the ground, the likeness of any fish that is in the water under the earth.19And beware lest you raise your eyes to heaven, and when you see the sun and the moon and the stars, all the host of heaven, you be drawn away and bow down to them and serve them, things that the Lord your God has allotted to all the peoples under the whole heaven. (Ge 2:1; De 17:3; 2Ki 17:16; 2Ki 21:3; Job 31:26)20But the Lord has taken you and brought you out of the iron furnace, out of Egypt, to be a people of his own inheritance, as you are this day. (De 9:29; De 32:9; 1Ki 8:51; Jer 11:4)21Furthermore, the Lord was angry with me because of you, and he swore that I should not cross the Jordan, and that I should not enter the good land that the Lord your God is giving you for an inheritance. You will not live long in it, but will be utterly destroyed. (De 30:18; De 31:28; De 32:1; Isa 1:2; Jer 2:12; Jer 6:19; Mic 6:2)27And the Lord will scatter you among the peoples, and you will be left few in number among the nations where the Lord will drive you. (Ge 49:1)31For the Lord your God is a merciful God. He will not leave you or destroy you or forget the covenant with your fathers that he swore to them. The Lord Alone Is God
32“For ask now of the days that are past, which were before you, since the day that God created man on the earth, and ask from one end of heaven to the other, whether such a great thing as this has ever happened or was ever heard of. (Job 8:8)33Did any people ever hear the voice of a god speaking out of the midst of the fire, as you have heard, and still live? (Ge 32:30; Ex 3:6; Ex 19:21; Ex 24:11; Ex 33:20; Ex 33:23; De 4:12; De 5:24; De 5:26; Jud 6:22; Jud 13:22)34Or has any god ever attempted to go and take a nation for himself from the midst of another nation, by trials, by signs, by wonders, and by war, by a mighty hand and an outstretched arm, and by great deeds of terror, all of which the Lord your God did for you in Egypt before your eyes? (Ex 6:6; Ex 7:3; Ex 15:3; De 7:8; De 11:2; De 26:8; De 34:12; Jer 32:21)35To you it was shown, that you might know that the Lord is God; there is no other besides him. (Ex 10:2; De 4:39; 1Sa 2:2; 2Sa 22:32; Isa 45:5; Isa 45:18; Isa 45:22; Isa 46:9; Mr 12:32)36Out of heaven he let you hear his voice, that he might discipline you. And on earth he let you see his great fire, and you heard his words out of the midst of the fire. Cities of Refuge
41Then Moses set apart three cities in the east beyond the Jordan, (Nu 35:6; Nu 35:14)42that the manslayer might flee there, anyone who kills his neighbor unintentionally, without being at enmity with him in time past; he may flee to one of these cities and save his life: (De 19:4)43Bezer in the wilderness on the tableland for the Reubenites, Ramoth in Gilead for the Gadites, and Golan in Bashan for the Manassites. Introduction to the Law
44This is the law that Moses set before the people of Israel.45These are the testimonies, the statutes, and the rules, which Moses spoke to the people of Israel when they came out of Egypt,46beyond the Jordan in the valley opposite Beth-peor, in the land of Sihon the king of the Amorites, who lived at Heshbon, whom Moses and the people of Israel defeated when they came out of Egypt. (Nu 21:24; De 1:4; De 3:29)47And they took possession of his land and the land of Og, the king of Bashan, the two kings of the Amorites, who lived to the east beyond the Jordan; (Nu 21:33; Nu 21:35; De 3:3)48from Aroer, which is on the edge of the Valley of the Arnon, as far as Mount Sirion[4] (that is, Hermon), (De 2:36; De 3:9)49together with all the Arabah on the east side of the Jordan as far as the Sea of the Arabah, under the slopes of Pisgah. (Isa 2:3)7Denn wo ist so ein herrliches Volk, dem Götter so nahe sind wie uns der HERR, unser Gott, sooft wir ihn anrufen? (2Sa 7:23)8Und wo ist so ein großes Volk, das so gerechte Ordnungen und Gebote hat wie dies ganze Gesetz, das ich euch heute vorlege? (Jer 8:8)9Hüte dich nur und bewahre deine Seele gut, dass du nicht vergisst, was deine Augen gesehen haben, und dass es nicht aus deinem Herzen kommt dein ganzes Leben lang. Und du sollst deinen Kindern und Kindeskindern kundtun (Ps 103:2)10den Tag, da du vor dem HERRN, deinem Gott, standest an dem Berge Horeb, als der HERR zu mir sagte: Versammle mir das Volk, dass ich sie meine Worte hören lasse und sie mich fürchten lernen alle Tage ihres Lebens auf Erden und ihre Kinder lehren. (Ex 19:17; De 6:7)11Da tratet ihr herzu und standet unten an dem Berge; der Berg aber stand in Flammen bis in den Himmel hinein, und da war Finsternis, Wolken und Dunkel.12Und der HERR redete mit euch mitten aus dem Feuer. Den Klang der Worte hörtet ihr, aber ihr saht keine Gestalt, nur eine Stimme war da. (De 5:4; De 5:24)13Und er verkündigte euch seinen Bund, den er euch gebot zu halten, nämlich die Zehn Worte, und schrieb sie auf zwei steinerne Tafeln. (Ex 31:18)14Und der HERR gebot mir zur selben Zeit, euch Gebote und Rechte zu lehren, dass ihr danach tun sollt in dem Lande, in das ihr zieht, es einzunehmen.15So hütet euch um eures Lebens willen – denn ihr habt keine Gestalt gesehen an dem Tage, da der HERR mit euch redete aus dem Feuer auf dem Berge Horeb –,16dass ihr euch nicht versündigt und euch irgendein Bildnis macht, das gleich sei einem Mann oder einer Frau, (Ex 20:4)17einem Tier auf dem Land oder Vogel unter dem Himmel,18dem Gewürm auf der Erde oder einem Fisch im Wasser unter der Erde.19Hebe auch nicht deine Augen auf zum Himmel, dass du die Sonne sehest und den Mond und die Sterne, das ganze Heer des Himmels, und fallest ab und betest sie an und dienest denen, die der HERR, dein Gott, zugewiesen hat allen Völkern unter dem ganzen Himmel. (De 17:3; Ro 1:23)20Euch aber hat der HERR angenommen und aus dem Schmelzofen, nämlich aus Ägypten, geführt, dass ihr sein Erbvolk sein sollt, wie ihr es jetzt seid. (Ex 19:5; 1Ki 8:51; Isa 19:25; Isa 48:10; Jer 11:4)21Und der HERR war so erzürnt über mich um eures Tuns willen, dass er schwor, ich sollte nicht über den Jordan gehen noch in das gute Land kommen, das dir der HERR, dein Gott, zum Erbteil geben wird, (De 3:26)22sondern ich muss in diesem Lande sterben und werde nicht über den Jordan gehen. Ihr aber werdet hinübergehen und dies gute Land einnehmen.23So hütet euch nun, dass ihr den Bund des HERRN, eures Gottes, nicht vergesst, den er mit euch geschlossen hat, und nicht ein Bildnis macht von irgendeiner Gestalt, wie es der HERR, dein Gott, geboten hat.24Denn der HERR, dein Gott, ist ein verzehrendes Feuer und ein eifernder Gott. (Ex 20:5; Ex 24:17; De 9:3; Isa 10:17; Heb 12:29)25Wenn du nun Kinder zeugst und Kindeskinder und ihr im Lande wohnt und versündigt euch und macht euch Bildnisse von irgendeiner Gestalt, sodass ihr übel tut vor dem HERRN, deinem Gott, und ihn erzürnt,26so rufe ich heute Himmel und Erde zu Zeugen über euch, dass ihr bald weggerafft werdet aus dem Lande, in das ihr geht über den Jordan, um es einzunehmen. Ihr werdet nicht lange darin bleiben, sondern werdet vertilgt werden. (De 30:19; De 31:28; De 32:1)27Und der HERR wird euch zerstreuen unter die Völker, und es wird von euch nur eine geringe Zahl übrig bleiben unter den Heiden, zu denen euch der HERR wegführen wird.28Dort werdet ihr Göttern dienen, die das Werk von Menschenhänden sind, Holz und Stein, die weder sehen noch hören noch essen noch riechen können. (De 28:36; Ps 115:4)29Ihr werdet dort den HERRN, deinen Gott, suchen, und du wirst ihn finden, so du ihn von ganzem Herzen und von ganzer Seele suchen wirst. (Ps 27:8; Jer 29:13)30Wenn du geängstet sein wirst und dich das alles treffen wird in künftigen Zeiten, so wirst du dich bekehren zu dem HERRN, deinem Gott, und seiner Stimme gehorchen. (De 30:2)31Denn der HERR, dein Gott, ist ein barmherziger Gott; er wird dich nicht verlassen noch verderben, wird auch den Bund nicht vergessen, den er deinen Vätern geschworen hat.32Denn frage nach den früheren Zeiten, die vor dir gewesen sind, von dem Tage an, da Gott den Menschen auf Erden geschaffen hat, und von einem Ende des Himmels zum andern, ob je so Großes geschehen oder desgleichen je gehört sei,33dass ein Volk die Stimme Gottes aus dem Feuer hat reden hören, wie du sie gehört hast, und dennoch am Leben blieb? (Ex 20:1; Ex 20:19)34Oder ob je ein Gott versucht hat, hinzugehen und sich ein Volk mitten aus einem Volk herauszuholen durch Machtproben, durch Zeichen, durch Wunder, durch Krieg und mit starker Hand und ausgerecktem Arm und durch große Schrecken, wie das alles der HERR, euer Gott, für euch getan hat in Ägypten vor deinen Augen? (De 7:19; De 29:2)35Du hast es sehen können, auf dass du wissest, dass der HERR allein Gott ist und sonst keiner. (De 32:39)36Vom Himmel hat er dich seine Stimme hören lassen, um dich zurechtzubringen; und auf Erden hat er dir gezeigt sein großes Feuer, und seine Worte hast du aus dem Feuer gehört. (Ex 20:1; Ex 20:18; Ex 20:20)37Weil er deine Väter geliebt und ihre Nachkommen erwählt hat, hat er dich aus Ägypten herausgeführt mit seinem Angesicht durch seine große Kraft, (Ex 33:14)38damit er vor dir her Völker vertriebe, die größer und stärker sind als du, und dich hineinbrächte, um dir ihr Land zum Erbteil zu geben, wie es jetzt ist.39So sollst du nun heute wissen und zu Herzen nehmen, dass der HERR Gott ist oben im Himmel und unten auf Erden und sonst keiner,40und sollst halten seine Rechte und Gebote, die ich dir heute gebiete; so wird’s dir und deinen Kindern nach dir wohlgehen und dein Leben lange währen in dem Lande, das dir der HERR, dein Gott, gibt für immer.
Freistädte im Ostjordanland
41Da sonderte Mose drei Städte aus jenseits des Jordans gegen Sonnenaufgang, (Nu 35:6; De 19:2)42damit dorthin fliehen konnte, wer seinen Nächsten totschlägt ohne Vorsatz und ihm zuvor nicht feind gewesen ist; der soll in eine dieser Städte fliehen, damit er am Leben bleibe.43Das sind Bezer im Wüstengebiet der Hochebene für die Rubeniter und Ramot in Gilead für die Gaditer und Golan in Baschan für die Manassiter.
Überleitung zum Gesetz
44Dies ist das Gesetz, das Mose den Israeliten vorlegte.45Dies sind die Ermahnungen und Gebote und Rechte, die Mose den Israeliten kundtat, als sie aus Ägypten gezogen waren,46jenseits des Jordans im Tal gegenüber Bet-Peor, im Lande Sihons, des Königs der Amoriter, der zu Heschbon herrschte, den Mose und die Israeliten schlugen, als sie aus Ägypten zogen. (Nu 21:24)47Und sie nahmen sein Land ein, dazu das Land Ogs, des Königs von Baschan, der beiden Könige der Amoriter, die jenseits des Jordans waren gegen Sonnenaufgang,48von Aroër an, das am Ufer des Arnon liegt, bis an den Berg Sion, das ist der Hermon, (De 3:8)49und das ganze Jordantal östlich des Jordans gegen Sonnenaufgang bis an das Meer der Araba[2] am Fuße der Abhänge des Pisga.

Veille attentivement sur toi-même tous les jours de ta vie, afin de ne pas oublier ce que tes yeux ont vu et de ne pas le laisser sortir de ton cœur. Enseigne-le à tes enfants et à tes petits-enfants.10Souviens-toi du jour où tu t'es présenté devant l'Eternel, ton Dieu, à Horeb, lorsque l'Eternel m'a dit: ‘Rassemble le peuple auprès de moi! Je veux leur faire entendre mes paroles, afin qu'ils apprennent à me craindre tout le temps qu'ils vivront sur la terre et qu'ils les enseignent à leurs enfants.’11Vous vous êtes approchés et vous vous êtes tenus au pied de la montagne. La montagne était embrasée et les flammes s'élevaient jusqu'en plein ciel. Sinon, en levant les yeux vers le ciel et en voyant le soleil, la lune et les étoiles, tous les corps célestes, tu te laisserais entraîner à te prosterner devant eux et à leur rendre un culte. Cela, c'est la part que l'Eternel, ton Dieu, a attribuée à tous les peuples qui vivent sous le ciel.20Mais vous, l'Eternel vous a pris et vous a fait sortir de la fournaise de fer de l'Egypte afin que vous soyez un peuple qui lui appartienne en propre, comme c'est le cas aujourd'hui.21L'Eternel s'est irrité contre moi à cause de vous. Il a juré que je ne passerais pas le Jourdain et que je n'entrerais pas dans le bon pays que l'Eternel, ton Dieu, te donne en héritage.22Je mourrai donc dans ce pays-ci, je ne passerai pas le Jourdain, tandis que vous, vous le passerez et vous posséderez ce bon pays.23Veillez bien à ne pas oublier l'alliance que l'Eternel, votre Dieu, a conclue avec vous et à ne pas vous faire de sculpture sacrée, de représentation quelconque que l'Eternel, ton Dieu, t'ait défendue.24En effet, l'Eternel, ton Dieu, est un feu dévorant[1], un Dieu jaloux. Vous n'y vivrez pas longtemps, car vous serez détruits.27L'Eternel vous dispersera parmi les peuples et vous ne resterez qu'en petit nombre au milieu des nations où il vous conduira.28Vous y servirez des dieux fabriqués par la main de l'homme, du bois et de la pierre, qui ne peuvent ni voir ni entendre, ni manger, ni sentir.29De là, tu chercheras l'Eternel, ton Dieu, et tu le trouveras si tu le cherches de tout ton cœur et de toute ton âme.30Dans ta détresse, quand tout cela t'arrivera, dans l'avenir, tu retourneras à l'Eternel, ton Dieu, et tu écouteras sa voix.31Oui, l'Eternel, ton Dieu, est un Dieu de compassion. Il ne t'abandonnera pas et ne t'anéantira pas, il n'oubliera pas l'alliance de tes ancêtres, celle qu'il a conclue avec eux en prêtant serment.32»Interroge le passé, les jours qui t'ont précédé depuis celui où Dieu a créé l'homme sur la terre, et informe-toi d'une extrémité du ciel à l'autre: y a-t-il déjà eu si grand événement et a-t-on déjà entendu chose pareille?33Y a-t-il déjà eu un peuple qui entende Dieu parler du milieu du feu, comme tu l'as entendu, et qui soit resté en vie?34Y a-t-il déjà eu un dieu qui cherche à venir se prendre une nation du milieu d'une autre nation, par des épreuves, des signes, des miracles et des combats, avec puissance et force et avec des actes terrifiants? C'est pourtant exactement ainsi que l'Eternel, votre Dieu, a agi pour vous en Egypte et sous vos yeux.35Et toi, tu as eu la possibilité de voir cela afin que tu reconnaisses que c'est l'Eternel qui est Dieu et qu'il n'y en a pas d'autre que lui[2]. (Mr 12:32)36Du ciel il t'a fait entendre sa voix pour t'instruire et sur la terre il t'a fait voir son grand feu, et tu as entendu ses paroles du milieu du feu.37Il a aimé tes ancêtres et il a choisi leur descendance après eux. Il t'a fait lui-même sortir d'Egypte par sa grande puissance.38Il a chassé devant toi des nations supérieures en nombre et en force pour te faire entrer dans leur pays, pour te le donner en possession, comme tu le vois aujourd'hui.39Sache donc aujourd'hui et retiens dans ton cœur que c'est l'Eternel qui est Dieu, en haut dans le ciel et en bas sur la terre, et qu'il n'y en a pas d'autre.40Respecte ses prescriptions et ses commandements, que je te donne aujourd'hui, afin d'être heureux, toi et tes enfants après toi, et de vivre longtemps sur le territoire que l'Eternel, ton Dieu, te donne en propriété perpétuelle.»41Moïse choisit alors trois villes de l'autre côté du Jourdain, à l'est,42afin qu'elles servent de refuge à l'auteur d'un homicide, à celui qui aurait involontairement tué son prochain sans avoir été auparavant son ennemi, afin qu'il puisse sauver sa vie en s'enfuyant dans l'une de ces villes.43C'étaient Betser dans le désert, dans la plaine, chez les Rubénites, Ramoth en Galaad chez les Gadites et Golan en Basan chez les Manassites.

44Voici la loi que Moïse exposa aux Israélites.45Voici les instructions, les prescriptions et les règles que Moïse donna aux Israélites après leur sortie d'Egypte.46C'était de l'autre côté du Jourdain, dans la vallée qui se trouve vis-à-vis de Beth-Peor, dans le pays de Sihon, le roi des Amoréens qui habitait à Hesbon et qui fut battu par Moïse et les Israélites après leur sortie d'Egypte.47Ils s'emparèrent de son pays et de celui d'Og, le roi du Basan. Ces deux rois des Amoréens habitaient de l'autre côté du Jourdain, à l'est.48Leur territoire s'étendait depuis Aroër sur les bords du torrent de l'Arnon jusqu'au mont Sirion, c'est-à-dire l'Hermon,49et il embrassait toute la plaine de l'autre côté du Jourdain, à l'est, jusqu'à la mer de la plaine[3] au pied du Pisga.
