The Ten Commandments

1 And Moses summoned all Israel and said to them, “Hear, O Israel, the statutes and the rules that I speak in your hearing today, and you shall learn them and be careful to do them. 2 The Lord our God made a covenant with us in Horeb. (Ex 19:5; De 4:23) 3 Not with our fathers did the Lord make this covenant, but with us, who are all of us here alive today. (Heb 8:9) 4 The Lord spoke with you face to face at the mountain, out of the midst of the fire, (Ex 33:11; Nu 14:14; De 34:10; Jud 6:22)

6 “‘I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. (Ex 20:2) 7 “You shall have no other gods before^[1] me. 8 “You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is on the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. 9 You shall not bow down to them or serve them; for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, 10 but showing steadfast love to thousands^[2] of those who love me and keep my commandments. (Ex 20:6; Jer 32:18) 11 “You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain. 12 “Observe the Sabbath day, to keep it holy, as the Lord your God commanded you. 13 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 14 but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, you or your son or your daughter or your male servant or your female servant, or your ox or your donkey or any of your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates, that your male servant and your female servant may rest as well as you. (Ex 16:29; Ex 23:12; Heb 4:4) 15 You shall remember that you were a slave^[3] in the land of Egypt, and the Lord your God brought you out from there with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm. 16 “Honor your father and your mother, as the Lord your God commanded you, that your days may be long, and that it may go well with you in the land that the Lord your God is giving you. (De 4:40) 17 “You shall not murder.^[4] (Mt 5:21; Mt 5:27; Lu 18:20; Jas 2:11)

18 “And you shall not commit adultery. (De 5:17) 19 “And you shall not steal. 20 “And you shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. 21 “And you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife. And you shall not desire your neighbor’s house, his field, or his male servant, or his female servant, his ox, or his donkey, or anything that is your neighbor’s.’ 22 “These words the Lord spoke to all your assembly at the mountain out of the midst of the fire, the cloud, and the thick darkness, with a loud voice; and he added no more. And he wrote them on two tablets of stone and gave them to me. (Ex 24:12; De 4:11; De 9:10) 23 And as soon as you heard the voice out of the midst of the darkness, while the mountain was burning with fire, you came near to me, all the heads of your tribes, and your elders. (De 4:12) 24 And you said, ‘Behold, the Lord our God has shown us his glory and greatness, and we have heard his voice out of the midst of the fire. This day we have seen God speak with man, and man still live. (Ex 19:19; De 3:24; De 4:33) 25 Now therefore why should we die? For this great fire will consume us. If we hear the voice of the Lord our God any more, we shall die. (De 18:16) 26 For who is there of all flesh, that has heard the voice of the living God speaking out of the midst of fire as we have, and has still lived? (De 5:24) 27 Go near and hear all that the Lord our God will say, and speak to us all that the Lord our God will speak to you, and we will hear and do it.’ (Ex 20:19) 28 “And the Lord heard your words, when you spoke to me. And the Lord said to me, ‘I have heard the words of this people, which they have spoken to you. They are right in all that they have spoken. (De 18:17) 29 Oh that they had such a heart as this always, to fear me and to keep all my commandments, that it might go well with them and with their descendants^[5] forever! 30 Go and say to them, “Return to your tents.” 31 But you, stand here by me, and I will tell you the whole commandment and the statutes and the rules that you shall teach them, that they may do them in the land that I am giving them to possess.’ (Ga 3:19) 32 You shall be careful therefore to do as the Lord your God has commanded you. Wiederholung der Zehn Gebote

1 Und Mose rief ganz Israel zusammen und sprach zu ihnen: Höre, Israel, die Gebote und Rechte, die ich heute vor euren Ohren rede, und lernt sie und bewahrt sie, dass ihr danach tut! (Ex 20:1) 2 Der HERR, unser Gott, hat einen Bund mit uns geschlossen am Horeb. (Ex 19:5) 3 Nicht mit unsern Vätern hat der HERR diesen Bund geschlossen, sondern mit uns, die wir heute hier sind und alle leben. (De 29:14) 4 Er hat von Angesicht zu Angesicht mit euch aus dem Feuer auf dem Berge geredet. (De 24:1) 5 Ich stand zu derselben Zeit zwischen dem HERRN und euch, um euch des HERRN Wort zu verkündigen; denn ihr fürchtetet euch vor dem Feuer und gingt nicht auf den Berg. Und er sprach: 6 Ich bin der HERR, dein Gott, der dich aus Ägyptenland geführt hat, aus der Knechtschaft. 7 Du sollst keine anderen Götter haben neben mir. (De 11:16; De 11:28) 8 Du sollst dir kein Bildnis machen in irgendeiner Gestalt, weder von dem, was oben im Himmel, noch von dem, was unten auf Erden, noch von dem, was im Wasser unter der Erde ist. Denn ich, der HERR, dein Gott, bin ein eifernder Gott, der die Missetat der Väter heimsucht bis ins dritte und vierte Glied an den Kindern derer, die mich hassen, (De 4:24) 10 aber Barmherzigkeit erweist an vielen Tausenden, die mich lieben und meine Gebote halten. 11 Du sollst den Namen des HERRN, deines Gottes, nicht missbrauchen; denn der HERR wird den nicht ungestraft lassen, der seinen Namen missbraucht. 12 Den Sabbattag sollst du halten, dass du ihn heiligst, wie dir der HERR, dein Gott, geboten hat. 13 Sechs Tage sollst du arbeiten und alle deine Werke tun. 14 Aber am siebenten Tag ist der Sabbat des HERRN, deines Gottes. Da sollst du keine Arbeit tun, auch nicht dein Sohn, deine Tochter, dein Knecht, deine Magd, dein Rind, dein Esel, all dein Vieh, auch nicht dein Fremdling, der in deiner Stadt lebt, auf dass dein Knecht und deine Magd ruhen gleichwie du. 15 Denn du sollst daran denken, dass auch du Knecht in Ägyptenland warst und der HERR, dein Gott, dich von dort herausgeführt hat mit mächtiger Hand und ausgerecktem Arm. Darum hat dir der HERR, dein Gott, geboten, dass du den Sabbattag halten sollst. (De 15:15; De 16:12; De 24:18; De 24:22)

16 Du sollst deinen Vater und deine Mutter ehren, wie dir der HERR, dein Gott, geboten hat, auf dass du lange lebest und dir’s wohlgehe in dem Lande, das dir der HERR, dein Gott, geben wird. 17 Du sollst nicht töten. 18 Du sollst nicht ehebrechen. 19 Du sollst nicht stehlen. 20 Du sollst nicht falsch Zeugnis reden wider deinen Nächsten. 21 Du sollst nicht begehren deines Nächsten Frau. Du sollst nicht begehren deines Nächsten Haus, Acker, Knecht, Magd, Rind, Esel noch alles, was sein ist. (Mic 2:2) 22 Das sind die Worte, die der HERR redete zu eurer ganzen Gemeinde auf dem Berge, aus dem Feuer und der Wolke und dem Dunkel mit großer Stimme, und tat nichts hinzu und schrieb sie auf zwei steinerne Tafeln und gab sie mir. (Ex 31:18)

Mose als Mittler zwischen Gott und Israel

23 Als ihr aber die Stimme aus der Finsternis hörtet und der Berg im Feuer brannte, tratet ihr zu mir, alle eure Stammeshäupter und eure Ältesten, 24 und spracht: Siehe, der HERR, unser Gott, hat uns sehen lassen seine Herrlichkeit und seine Majestät, und wir haben seine Stimme aus dem Feuer gehört. Heute haben wir zwar gesehen, dass Gott mit Menschen redet und sie am Leben bleiben. (De 4:12; De 4:33) 25 Aber nun, warum sollen wir sterben? Dies große Feuer wird uns noch verzehren! Wenn wir des HERRN, unseres Gottes, Stimme weiter hören, so müssen wir sterben. 26 Kann denn Sterbliches die Stimme des lebendigen Gottes aus dem Feuer reden hören wie wir und doch am Leben bleiben? 27 Tritt du hinzu und höre alles, was der HERR, unser Gott, sagt, und sage es uns. Alles, was der HERR, unser Gott, mit dir reden wird, das wollen wir hören und tun. 28 Als aber der HERR eure Worte hörte, die ihr mit mir redetet, sprach er zu mir: Ich habe gehört die Worte dieses Volks, die sie mit dir geredet haben; es ist alles gut, was sie geredet haben. 29 Ach dass sie ein solches Herz hätten, mich zu fürchten und zu halten alle meine Gebote ihr Leben lang, auf dass es ihnen und ihren Kindern wohlginge ewiglich! (De 29:3) 30 Geh hin und sage ihnen: Geht heim in eure Zelte! 31 Du aber sollst hier vor mir stehen bleiben, damit ich dir verkündige das ganze Gesetz, die Gebote und Rechte, die du sie lehren sollst, dass sie danach tun in dem Lande, das ich ihnen geben werde, um es einzunehmen. 32 So habt nun acht, dass ihr tut, wie euch der HERR, euer Gott, geboten hat, und weicht nicht, weder zur Rechten noch zur Linken, (De 4:2; De 28:14; Jos 1:7; Pr 4:27)

33 sondern wandelt auf dem Weg, den euch der HERR, euer Gott, geboten hat, damit ihr leben könnt und es euch wohlgeht und ihr lange lebt in dem Lande, das ihr einnehmen werdet.

1 Moïse convoqua tous les Israélites et leur dit: «Ecoute, Israël, les prescriptions et les règles que je vous fais entendre aujourd'hui. Apprenez-les et mettez-les soigneusement en pratique. 2 »L'Eternel, notre Dieu, a conclu une alliance avec nous à Horeb. 3 Ce n'est pas avec nos ancêtres que l'Eternel a conclu cette alliance, c'est avec nous, qui sommes ici aujourd'hui, tous vivants. 4 L'Eternel vous a parlé face à face sur la montagne, du milieu du feu. 5 Je me suis alors tenu entre l'Eternel et vous pour vous annoncer la parole de l'Eternel. En effet, vous aviez peur du feu et vous n'êtes pas montés sur la montagne. Il a dit: 6 »‘ Je suis l'Eternel, ton Dieu, qui t'ai fait sortir d'Egypte^[1], de la maison d'esclavage. (Ps 81:11) 7 »Tu n'auras pas d'autres dieux devant moi. 8 »Tu ne te feras pas de sculpture sacrée ni aucune représentation de ce qui est en haut dans le ciel, en bas sur la terre et dans l'eau plus bas que la terre. 9 »Tu ne te prosterneras pas devant ces choses et tu ne les serviras pas, car moi, l'Eternel, ton Dieu, je suis un Dieu jaloux. Je punis la faute des pères sur les enfants jusqu'à la troisième et à la quatrième génération de ceux qui me détestent, 10 et j'agis avec bonté jusqu'à 1000 générations envers ceux qui m'aiment et qui respectent mes commandements. 11 »Tu n'utiliseras pas le nom de l'Eternel, ton Dieu, à la légère, car l'Eternel ne laissera pas impuni celui qui utilisera son nom à la légère. 12 »Respecte le jour du repos en en faisant un jour saint comme l'Eternel, ton Dieu, te l'a ordonné. 13 Pendant 6 jours, tu travailleras et tu feras tout ce que tu dois faire. 14 Mais le septième jour est le jour du repos de l'Eternel, ton Dieu. Tu ne feras aucun travail, ni toi, ni ton fils, ni ta fille, ni ton esclave, ni ta servante, ni ton bœuf, ni ton âne, ni aucune de tes bêtes, ni l'étranger qui habite chez toi, afin que ton esclave et ta servante se reposent comme toi. 15 Tu te souviendras que tu as été esclave en Egypte et que l'Eternel, ton Dieu, t'en a fait sortir avec puissance et force. Voilà pourquoi l'Eternel, ton Dieu, t'a ordonné de respecter le jour du repos. 16 » Honore ton père et ta mère comme l'Eternel, ton Dieu, te l'a ordonné, afin de vivre longtemps et d'être heureux dans le pays que l'Eternel, ton Dieu, te donne. 17 »Tu ne commettras pas de meurtre. 18 »Tu ne commettras pas d'adultère. 19 »Tu ne commettras pas de vol. 20 »Tu ne porteras pas de faux témoignage contre ton prochain. 21 »Tu ne convoiteras pas^[2] la femme de ton prochain; tu ne désireras pas la maison de ton prochain, ni son champ, ni son esclave, ni sa servante, ni son bœuf, ni son âne, ni quoi que ce soit qui lui appartienne.’ (Ex 20:12) 22 »Telles sont les paroles que l'Eternel a prononcées à haute voix sur la montagne, du milieu du feu, des nuées et de l'obscurité, et qu'il a adressées à toute votre assemblée, sans rien ajouter. Il les a écrites sur deux tables de pierre qu'il m'a données. 23 »Lorsque vous avez entendu la voix du milieu des ténèbres et tandis que la montagne était tout en feu, vos chefs de tribus et vos anciens^[3] se sont tous approchés de moi, 24 et vous avez dit: ‘Voici que l'Eternel, notre Dieu, nous a montré sa gloire et sa grandeur, et nous avons entendu sa voix du milieu du feu. Aujourd'hui, nous avons vu que Dieu a parlé à des hommes et qu'ils sont restés en vie. 25 Maintenant pourquoi mourrions-nous? En effet, ce grand feu nous dévorera. Si nous continuons à entendre la voix de l'Eternel, notre Dieu, nous mourrons. 26 Quel est l'homme, en effet, qui ait déjà entendu, comme nous, le Dieu vivant parler du milieu du feu et qui soit resté en vie? 27 Que ce soit toi qui t'approches et écoutes tout ce que dira l'Eternel, notre Dieu. Tu nous rapporteras toi-même tout ce que te dira l'Eternel, notre Dieu; nous l'écouterons et nous le ferons.’ 28 »L'Eternel a entendu les paroles que vous m'avez adressées et il m'a dit: ‘J'ai entendu les paroles que ce peuple t'a adressées. Tout ce qu'ils ont dit est bien. 29 Si seulement ils avaient toujours ce même cœur pour me craindre et pour respecter tous mes commandements, afin d'être toujours heureux, eux et leurs enfants! 30 Va leur dire de retourner dans leurs tentes. 31 Quant à toi, reste ici avec moi et je te dirai tous les commandements, les prescriptions et les règles que tu devras leur enseigner afin qu'ils les mettent en pratique dans le pays dont je leur donne la possession. 32 Vous veillerez à vous conformer à ce que l'Eternel, votre Dieu, vous a ordonné de faire, vous ne vous en écarterez ni à droite ni à gauche. 33 Vous suivrez entièrement la voie que l'Eternel, votre Dieu, vous a prescrite, afin de vivre et d'être heureux, de vivre longtemps dans le pays dont vous aurez la possession.’
