1 Odpovídaje pak Zofar Naamatský, řekl: 2 Z příčiny té myšlení má k odpovídání tobě nutí mne, a to abych rychle učinil, 3 Že kárání k zahanbení svému slyším, pročež duch můj osvícený nutí mne, aťbych odpovídal. 4 Zdaž nevíš o tom, že od věků, a jakž postavil Bůh člověka na zemi, 5 Plésání bezbožných krátké jest, a veselí pokrytce jen na chvílku? 6 Byť pak vstoupila až k nebi pýcha jeho, a hlava jeho oblaku by se dotkla, 7 Však jako lejno jeho na věky zahyne. Ti, kteříž jej vídali, řeknou: Kam se poděl? 8 Jako sen pomine, aniž ho naleznou; nebo uteče jako vidění noční. 9 Oko, kteréž ho vídalo, již ho nikdy neuzří, aniž více patřiti bude na něj místo jeho. 10 Synové jeho budou přízně u nuzných hledati, a ruce jeho musejí zase vraceti loupež svou. 11 Kosti jeho naplněny jsou hříchy mladosti jeho, a s ním v prachu lehnou. 12 A ačkoli zlost sladne v ústech jeho, a chová ji pod jazykem svým; 13 Kochá se v ní, a nepouští jí, ale zdržuje ji u prostřed dásní svých: 14 Však pokrm ten ve střevách jeho promění se; bude jako žluč hadů nejlítějších u vnitřnostech jeho. 15 Zboží nahltané vyvrátí, z břicha jeho Bůh silný je vyžene. 16 Jed hadů lítých ssáti bude, zabije ho jazyk ještěrčí. 17 Neuzří pramenů potoků a řek medu a másla. 18 Navrátí úsilé cizí, a nezažive ho, vedlé nátisku svého rozličného; nebude na ně vesel. 19 Nebo utiskal a opouštěl nuzné, dům zloupil a nestavěl ho. 20 Pročež nesezná nic pokojného v životě svém, aniž které nejrozkošnější své věci bude moci zachovati. 21 Nic mu nepozůstane z pokrmu jeho, tak že nebude míti, čím by se troštoval. 22 Byť pak i dovršena byla hojnost jeho, ssoužení míti bude; každá ruka trapiče oboří se na něj. 23 By měl čím naplniti břicho své, dopustí na něj Bůh prchlivost hněvu svého, kterouž na něj dštíti bude i na pokrm jeho. 24 Když utíkati bude před zbrojí železnou, prostřelí ho lučiště ocelivé. 25 Střela vyňata bude z toulu a vystřelena, nadto meč pronikne žluč jeho; a když odcházeti bude, přikvačí jej hrůzy. 26 Všeliká neštěstí jsou polečena v skrýších jeho, zžíře jej oheň nerozdmýchaný, zle se povede i pozůstalému v stanu jeho. 27 Odkryjí nebesa nepravost jeho, a země povstane proti němu. 28 Rozptýlena bude úroda domu jeho, rozplyne se v den hněvu jeho. 29 Tenť jest podíl člověka bezbožného od Boha, to, pravím, dědictví vyrčené jemu od Boha silného.

1 Na to navázal Sófar Naamatský slovy: 2 „Jak tak o tom přemítám, musím odporovat, proto abych si pospíšil. 3 Důtku, jež mě uráží, vyslechnout musím, ale můj rozumný duch mi velí odpovědět.

— Svévolník nemá naději

4 Což nevíš, že je to tak odjakživa, od chvíle, co byl člověk postaven na zemi, 5 že plesání svévolníků trvá krátce a radost rouhačů jen okamžik? 6 I když ve své povznesenosti se vypíná až k nebi a jeho hlava se dotýká oblaků, 7 navždy zanikne tak jako jeho výkal, a kdo jej vídali, řeknou: ‚Kde je?‘ 8 Odlétne jak sen a nenajdou ho, bude zaplašen jako vidění noční. 9 Oko, jež ho spatřovalo, už ho nezahlédne, nikdo ho na jeho místě neuvidí. 10 Jeho synové se budou chtít zalíbit nuzným, vlastníma rukama vrátí, co svou silou získal. 11 I když jeho kosti jsou plny mladistvé svěžesti, i ta s ním ulehne do prachu. 12 Aťsi mu zloba připadá v ústech sladká a přechovává ji pod jazykem, 13 kochá se v ní, nevzdá se jí, zadržuje ji na svém patře, 14 jeho pokrm se mu v útrobách změní, stane se mu ve vnitřnostech zmijím jedem. 15 Nahltal se majetku, ale vyzvrátí jej, Bůh mu jej vyžene z břicha. 16 Bude sát zmijí jed, hadí jazyk ho zabije. 17 Nebude se dívat na tekoucí vody, na řeky, potoky medu a mléka. 18 Výtěžek vrátí, nezhltne jej, nad ziskem z obchodu nebude jásat. 19 Odstrkoval a opouštěl nuzné, uchvátil dům, ač jej nestavěl. 20 V nitru však nepoznal klidu, to, po čem dychtil, ho nezachrání. 21 Před jeho žravostí nic neobstálo, proto jeho blahobyt nebude trvalý. 22 I při nejhojnějším nadbytku mu bude úzko, dopadnou na něho ruce všech bědných. 23 Jen ať si plní své břicho, Bůh na něho sešle svůj planoucí hněv, jeho útroby zasáhne prškou šípů. 24 Bude prchat před železnou zbrojí a prostřelí ho bronzový luk. 25 Střela pronikne mu zády, blesk jeho žlučí; zajde obklopen přízraky. 26 Všechna temnota je pro něj uchována, pohltí ho oheň, který nerozdmýchal člověk, zle dopadne v jeho stanu i ten, kdo vyvázl. 27 Nebesa zjeví jeho nepravost a země povstane proti němu. 28 Výnos jeho domu se přestěhuje jinam, rozplyne se v den Božího hněvu. 29 To je úděl svévolného člověka, určený Bohem, Bohem mu přiřčené dědictví.“

Hrozný osud ničemů

1 Sofar Naámský mu na to řekl: 2 „Na tohle musím odpovědět, to přece nejde vydržet! 3 Když slyším tolik důtek a urážek, můj moudrý duch mi vnuká odpověď: 4 Víš přece sám, že odjakživa, už co byl člověk na zem postaven, 5 radost ničemů je velmi krátká, štěstí bezbožných je chvilkové. 6 I kdyby jeho hrdost k nebi dosáhla a hlavou oblaků se dotýkal, 7 jak vlastní lejno zmizí napořád – ‚Kam se poděl?‘ se jeho známí budou ptát. 8 Jako sen odletí a bude ten tam, bude zapuzen jak noční vidina. 9 Oko, jež vídalo ho, už ho nespatří, nebude k nalezení ve svém obydlí. 10 Jeho děti budou muset odškodnit chudáky, vlastníma rukama majetek navrátit. 11 Mladická síla, jíž měl plné kosti, do prachu ulehne spolu s ním. 12 I když mu zlo chutná v ústech sladce, i když je chová pod jazykem, 13 i když je vychutnává, nemá naspěch, i když je převaluje na patře, 14 v útrobách mu ale ten pokrm zhořkne, promění se mu v hadí jed. 15 Vše, co spolykal, musí vyzvracet, Bůh mu to bohatství z břicha vyžene. 16 Bude nasávat hadí jed, jazyk zmijí ho zabije. 17 Nikdy nezažije proudy oleje, nebude se koupat v medu a smetaně. 18 To, co ukořistil, vrátí netknuté, neužije to, co získal obchodem. 19 To proto, že chudákům bořil chýše a zabíral domy, které nestavěl. 20 Svoji hladovost neuměl utišit, a proto neunikne vlastní chtivosti. 21 Nezbude nic, co by pohltil, už nepotrvá jeho blahobyt. 22 Uprostřed nadbytku přijde do úzkých, bída se na něj vrhne ze všech sil. 23 Zatímco on si břicho cpe, Bůh na něj sešle vroucí hněv – zaplaví ho svým deštěm střel! 24 Na útěku před železnou zbraní zasažen bude lukem bronzovým. 25 Ze zad mu náhle trčí šíp a jeho špice se žlučí skví. Kdejaká hrůza ho dostihla, 26 na jeho poklady čeká černá tma. Pohltí ho oheň, jenž nebyl rozdmýchán, cokoli zůstalo u něj doma, spolyká. 27 Nebesa odhalí jeho vinu, země se postaví proti němu. 28 Jeho dům odnese povodeň, proud ho zachvátí v soudný den. 29 Takový osud dává Bůh ničemům, takové dědictví jim určil Bůh!“

4 Weißt du das nicht von Urzeit her, / seit er Menschen auf die Erde gesetzt hat: 5 dass kurz nur währt der Frevler Jubel, / einen Augenblick nur des Ruchlosen Freude? 6 Steigt auch sein Übermut zum Himmel / und rührt sein Kopf bis ans Gewölk, (Ž 37,35) 7 wie sein Kot vergeht er doch für immer; / die ihn gesehen haben, werden fragen: Wo ist er? 8 Wie ein Traum verfliegt er / und ist nicht mehr zu finden, / wird weggescheucht wie ein Gesicht der Nacht.
