(1Sam 31,1; Am 2,14)4Da sprach Saul zu seinem Waffenträger: Zieh dein Schwert und ersteche mich damit, dass nicht diese Unbeschnittenen kommen und Mutwillen mit mir treiben! Aber sein Waffenträger wollte nicht, denn er fürchtete sich sehr. Da nahm Saul das Schwert und stürzte sich hinein. (1Sam 31,6; Pred 9,1; Hos 13,10)7Als aber alle Männer Israels, die in der Ebene wohnten, sahen, dass [das Heer Israels] geflohen und Saul und seine Söhne tot waren, da verließen sie ihre Städte und flohen; und die Philister kamen und wohnten darin. (3Mo 26,32; 3Mo 26,36)8Und es geschah am folgenden Tag, da kamen die Philister, um die Erschlagenen auszuplündern, und sie fanden Saul und seine Söhne auf dem Bergland von Gilboa liegen. (1Sam 31,8)9Und sie plünderten ihn aus und nahmen sein Haupt und seine Waffen weg, und sie ließen ringsum im Land der Philister diese Freudenbotschaft vor ihren Götzen und dem Volk verkünden. (Ri 16,24; 1Sam 31,9; 1Chr 10,4; Dan 5,2; Dan 5,22; Mt 14,11)10Und sie legten seine Waffen in das Haus ihres Gottes, und seinen Schädel nagelten sie an das Haus Dagons. (1Sam 5,2; 1Sam 31,10)11Als aber alle Einwohner von Jabes in Gilead hörten, was die Philister dem Saul alles getan hatten, (1Sam 11,1; 2Sam 2,4)12da machten sich alle tapferen Männer auf und nahmen den Leichnam Sauls und die Leichname seiner Söhne weg, und sie brachten sie nach Jabes und begruben ihre Gebeine unter der Terebinthe von Jabes, und sie fasteten sieben Tage lang. (1Sam 31,13; 2Sam 21,11)13So starb Saul wegen seiner Treulosigkeit, die er gegen den HERRN begangen hatte, wegen des Wortes des HERRN, das er nicht eingehalten hatte, und weil er die Totenbeschwörerin gesucht und befragt hatte; (1Sam 13,13; 1Sam 15,23; 1Sam 28,7; Ps 25,3; Ps 73,27; Spr 2,22; Jer 2,19; Röm 6,23)14den HERRN aber hatte er nicht gesucht. Darum tötete Er ihn und wandte das Königreich David, dem Sohn Isais, zu. (5Mo 4,29; 1Sam 13,14; 1Sam 15,28; 2Chr 15,2; 2Chr 16,12; Esr 8,22; Hes 14,3)
1Now the Philistines fought against Israel, and the men of Israel fled before the Philistines and fell slain on Mount Gilboa. (1Sam 31,1)2And the Philistines overtook Saul and his sons, and the Philistines struck down Jonathan and Abinadab and Malchi-shua, the sons of Saul.3The battle pressed hard against Saul, and the archers found him, and he was wounded by the archers.4Then Saul said to his armor-bearer, “Draw your sword and thrust me through with it, lest these uncircumcised come and mistreat me.” But his armor-bearer would not, for he feared greatly. Therefore Saul took his own sword and fell upon it.5And when his armor-bearer saw that Saul was dead, he also fell upon his sword and died.6Thus Saul died; he and his three sons and all his house died together.7And when all the men of Israel who were in the valley saw that the army[1] had fled and that Saul and his sons were dead, they abandoned their cities and fled, and the Philistines came and lived in them.8The next day, when the Philistines came to strip the slain, they found Saul and his sons fallen on Mount Gilboa.9And they stripped him and took his head and his armor, and sent messengers throughout the land of the Philistines to carry the good news to their idols and to the people.10And they put his armor in the temple of their gods and fastened his head in the temple of Dagon.11But when all Jabesh-gilead heard all that the Philistines had done to Saul,12all the valiant men arose and took away the body of Saul and the bodies of his sons, and brought them to Jabesh. And they buried their bones under the oak in Jabesh and fasted seven days.13So Saul died for his breach of faith. He broke faith with the Lord in that he did not keep the command of the Lord, and also consulted a medium, seeking guidance. (1Sam 13,13; 1Sam 15,23; 1Sam 28,7)14He did not seek guidance from the Lord. Therefore the Lord put him to death and turned the kingdom over to David the son of Jesse. (1Sam 15,28; 1Sam 28,6; 2Sam 3,9; 1Chr 12,23)
