1Je vous encourage donc, moi, le prisonnier dans le Seigneur, à vous conduire d'une manière digne de l'appel que vous avez reçu.2En toute humilité et douceur, avec patience, supportez-vous les uns les autres dans l'amour.3Efforcez-vous de conserver l'unité de l'Esprit par le lien de la paix.4Il y a un seul corps et un seul Esprit, de même que vous avez été appelés à une seule espérance par votre vocation.5Il y a un seul Seigneur, une seule foi, un seul baptême,6un seul Dieu et Père de tous. Il est au-dessus de tous, agit à travers tous et habite en [nous] tous.7Cependant, à chacun de nous la grâce a été donnée à la mesure du don de Christ.8C'est pourquoi il est dit: Il est monté sur les hauteurs, il a emmené des prisonniers et il a fait des dons aux hommes.[1] (Ps 68:19)9Or, que signifie: Il est monté, sinon qu'il est aussi [d'abord] descendu dans les régions les plus basses de la terre?10Celui qui est descendu, c'est celui qui est monté au-dessus de tous les cieux afin de remplir tout l'univers.11C'est lui qui a donné les uns comme apôtres, les autres comme prophètes, les autres comme évangélistes, les autres comme bergers et enseignants.12Il l'a fait pour former les saints aux tâches du service en vue de l'édification du corps de Christ,13jusqu'à ce que nous parvenions tous à l'unité de la foi et de la connaissance du Fils de Dieu, à la maturité de l'adulte, à la mesure de la stature parfaite de Christ.14Ainsi, nous ne serons plus de petits enfants, ballottés et emportés par tout vent de doctrine, par la ruse des hommes et leur habileté dans les manœuvres d'égarement.15Mais en disant la vérité dans l'amour, nous grandirons à tout point de vue vers celui qui est la tête, Christ.16C'est de lui que le corps tout entier, bien coordonné et solidement uni grâce aux articulations dont il est muni, tire sa croissance en fonction de l'activité qui convient à chacune de ses parties et s'édifie lui-même dans l'amour.
La vie nouvelle en Christ
17Voici donc ce que je dis et ce que j'affirme dans le Seigneur: vous ne devez plus vous conduire comme les non-croyants, qui se laissent guider par la sottise de leurs pensées.18Ils ont l'intelligence obscurcie, ils sont étrangers à la vie de Dieu à cause de l'ignorance qui est en eux, à cause de l'endurcissement de leur cœur.19Ils ont perdu tout sens moral et se sont livrés à la débauche pour commettre avec avidité toutes sortes d'impuretés.20Mais vous, ce n'est pas ainsi que vous avez appris à connaître Christ,21si du moins c'est lui que vous avez écouté et si c'est en lui que vous avez été enseignés conformément à la vérité qui est en Jésus.22On vous a enseigné à vous débarrasser du vieil homme qui correspond à votre ancienne manière de vivre et se détruit sous l'effet de ses désirs trompeurs,23à vous laisser renouveler par l'Esprit dans votre intelligence24et à vous revêtir de l'homme nouveau, créé selon Dieu dans la justice et la sainteté que produit la vérité.25C'est pourquoi, vous débarrassant du mensonge, dites chacun la vérité à votre prochain[2], car nous sommes membres les uns des autres. (Za 8:16)26Si vous vous mettez en colère, ne péchez pas.[3] Que le soleil ne se couche pas sur votre colère, (Ps 4:5)27et ne laissez aucune place au diable.28Que celui qui volait cesse de voler; qu'il se donne plutôt la peine de travailler honnêtement de ses [propres] mains pour avoir de quoi donner à celui qui est dans le besoin.29Qu'aucune parole malsaine ne sorte de votre bouche, mais seulement de bonnes paroles qui, en fonction des besoins, servent à l'édification et transmettent une grâce à ceux qui les entendent.30N'attristez pas le Saint-Esprit de Dieu, par lequel vous avez été marqués d'une empreinte pour le jour de la libération.31Que toute amertume, toute fureur, toute colère, tout éclat de voix, toute calomnie et toute forme de méchanceté disparaissent du milieu de vous.32Soyez bons et pleins de compassion les uns envers les autres; pardonnez-vous réciproquement comme Dieu nous a pardonné en Christ.

(Mt 11:7; Ep 6:11; He 13:9; Jc 1:6; Jude 1:12)15Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, (Ep 1:22; Ep 2:21; Ep 4:25; 1Jn 3:18)16from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love. The New Life
17Now this I say and testify in the Lord, that you must no longer walk as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their minds. (Rm 1:21; Ep 2:1; Ep 4:22; Col 2:18; Col 3:7; 1Th 2:12; 1P 1:18; 1P 4:3; 2P 2:18)18They are darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, due to their hardness of heart. (Mc 3:5; Rm 11:10; Ep 2:12)19They have become callous and have given themselves up to sensuality, greedy to practice every kind of impurity. (1R 21:25; Pr 23:35; Rm 1:24; Rm 1:26; Rm 1:28)20But that is not the way you learned Christ!— (Mt 11:29)21assuming that you have heard about him and were taught in him, as the truth is in Jesus, (Ep 1:13; Col 2:7)22to put off your old self,[6] which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, (Rm 6:6; Col 3:8; Col 3:9; He 3:13; He 12:1; Jc 1:21; 1P 2:1)23and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, (Rm 12:2)24and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness. (Za 8:16; Rm 12:5; Ep 4:15; Col 3:9)26Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, (Ps 37:8)27and give no opportunity to the devil. (Jc 4:7)28Let the thief no longer steal, but rather let him labor, doing honest work with his own hands, so that he may have something to share with anyone in need. (Pr 21:26; Ac 20:35; Ga 6:10; 1Th 4:11; 2Th 3:8; 2Th 3:11; 2Th 3:12)29Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear. L’unità nella fede
1Io dunque, il prigioniero del Signore, vi esorto a comportarvi in modo degno della vocazione che vi è stata rivolta,2con ogni umiltà e mansuetudine, con pazienza, sopportandovi gli uni gli altri con amore,3sforzandovi di conservare l’unità dello Spirito con il vincolo della pace.4Vi è un corpo solo e un solo Spirito, come pure siete stati chiamati a una sola speranza, quella della vostra vocazione.5V’è un solo Signore, una sola fede, un solo battesimo,6un solo Dio e Padre di tutti, che è al di sopra di tutti, fra tutti e in tutti.7Ma a ciascuno di noi la grazia è stata data secondo la misura del dono di Cristo.8Per questo è detto: «Salito in alto, egli ha portato con sé dei prigionieri e ha fatto dei doni agli uomini»[1].9Ora, questo «è salito» che cosa vuol dire se non che egli era anche disceso nelle parti più basse della terra?10Colui che è disceso, è lo stesso che è salito al di sopra di tutti i cieli, affinché riempisse ogni cosa.11È lui che ha dato alcuni come apostoli, altri come profeti, altri come evangelisti, altri come pastori e dottori,12per il perfezionamento dei santi in vista dell’opera del ministero e dell’edificazione del corpo di Cristo,13fino a che tutti giungiamo all’unità della fede e della piena conoscenza del Figlio di Dio, allo stato di uomini fatti, all’altezza della statura perfetta di Cristo;14affinché non siamo più come bambini sballottati e portati qua e là da ogni vento di dottrina per la frode degli uomini, per l’astuzia loro nelle arti seduttrici dell’errore;15ma, seguendo la verità nell’amore, cresciamo in ogni cosa verso colui che è il capo, cioè Cristo.16Da lui tutto il corpo[2] ben collegato e ben connesso mediante l’aiuto fornito da tutte le giunture, trae il proprio sviluppo nella misura del vigore di ogni singola parte, per edificare se stesso nell’amore.
Spogliarsi del vecchio uomo e rivestirsi dell’uomo nuovo
17Questo dunque io dico e attesto nel Signore: non comportatevi più come si comportano i pagani nella vanità dei loro pensieri,18con l’intelligenza ottenebrata, estranei alla vita di Dio, a motivo dell’ignoranza che è in loro, a motivo dell’indurimento del loro cuore.19Essi, avendo perduto ogni sentimento, si sono abbandonati alla dissolutezza, fino a commettere ogni specie di impurità con avidità insaziabile.20Ma voi non è così che avete imparato a conoscere Cristo.21Se pure gli avete dato ascolto e in lui siete stati istruiti secondo la verità che è in Gesù,22avete imparato per quanto concerne la vostra condotta di prima a spogliarvi del vecchio uomo che si corrompe seguendo le passioni ingannatrici;23a essere invece rinnovati nello spirito della vostra mente24e a rivestire l’uomo nuovo che è creato a immagine di Dio nella giustizia e nella santità che procedono dalla verità.25Perciò, bandita la menzogna, ognuno dica la verità al suo prossimo[3], perché siamo membra gli uni degli altri.26Adiratevi e non peccate[4]; il sole non tramonti sopra la vostra ira27e non fate posto al diavolo.28Chi rubava non rubi più, ma si affatichi piuttosto a lavorare onestamente con le {proprie} mani, affinché abbia qualcosa da dare a colui che è nel bisogno.29Nessuna cattiva parola esca dalla vostra bocca; ma se ne avete qualcuna buona, che edifichi secondo il bisogno, ditela, affinché conferisca grazia a chi l’ascolta.30Non rattristate lo Spirito Santo di Dio con il quale siete stati suggellati per il giorno della redenzione.31Via da voi ogni amarezza, ogni cruccio e ira e clamore e parola offensiva con ogni sorta di cattiveria!32Siate {invece} benevoli e misericordiosi gli uni verso gli altri, perdonandovi a vicenda come anche Dio vi ha perdonati in Cristo.

(Rm 12:3; 1Co 12:11)8Darum heißt es: »Hinaufgestiegen in die Höhe, hat er Gefangene[3] gefangen geführt und den Menschen Gaben gegeben.« (Ps 68:19)9Das Hinaufgestiegen aber, was besagt es anderes, als dass er auch hinabgestiegen ist in die unteren Teile der Erde? (Jn 3:13)10Der hinabgestiegen ist, ist derselbe, der auch hinaufgestiegen ist über alle Himmel, damit er alles erfüllte. (Jr 23:24; Ep 1:23; He 7:26)11Und er hat die einen als Apostel gegeben und andere als Propheten, andere als Evangelisten, andere als Hirten und Lehrer, (Ac 20:28; Ac 21:8; 1Co 12:28; Ep 2:20; Ep 3:5; 2Tm 4:5)12zur Ausrüstung der Heiligen für das Werk des Dienstes, für die Erbauung[4] des Leibes Christi, (1Co 12:7; 2Co 10:8; Ep 1:23)13bis wir alle hingelangen zur Einheit des Glaubens und der Erkenntnis des Sohnes Gottes, zur vollen Mannesreife, zum Maß der ⟨vollen⟩ Reife der Fülle Christi[5]. (1Co 14:20; Col 1:28; 2P 3:18)14⟨Denn⟩ wir sollen nicht mehr Unmündige sein[6], hin- und hergeworfen und umhergetrieben von jedem Wind der Lehre durch die Betrügerei der Menschen, durch ⟨ihre⟩ Verschlagenheit zu listig ersonnenem Irrtum[7]. (1Co 3:1; Col 2:8; He 5:13; He 13:9)15Lasst uns aber die Wahrheit reden[8] in Liebe und in allem hinwachsen zu ihm, der das Haupt ist, Christus. (Ep 1:22; 2Jn 1:3)16Aus ihm wird der ganze Leib zusammengefügt und verbunden durch jedes der Unterstützung ⟨dienende⟩ Gelenk[9], entsprechend der Wirksamkeit nach dem Maß jedes einzelnen Teils; und ⟨so⟩ wirkt er das Wachstum des Leibes zu seiner Selbstauferbauung[10] in Liebe. (1Co 8:1; 1Co 12:25; Ep 2:21; Col 2:19)
Mahnung zu gottgefälligem Leben
17Dies nun sage und bezeuge ich[11] im Herrn, dass ihr nicht mehr wandeln sollt, wie auch die Nationen wandeln, in Nichtigkeit ihres Sinnes[12]; (1P 4:3)18⟨sie sind⟩ verfinstert am Verstand, entfremdet dem Leben Gottes wegen der Unwissenheit, die in ihnen ist, wegen der Verstockung[13] ihres Herzens; (Rm 1:21; Ep 2:12; Ep 5:8; 1Th 4:5)19sie, die abgestumpft sind, haben sich selbst der Ausschweifung hingegeben, zum Ausüben jeder Unreinheit mit Gier[14]. (Rm 1:28)20Ihr aber habt den Christus nicht so kennengelernt. (Mt 11:29)21Ihr habt ihn doch gehört und seid in ihm gelehrt worden[15], wie es Wahrheit in Jesus ist: (Ps 45:5)22dass ihr, was den früheren Lebenswandel angeht, den alten Menschen abgelegt habt, der sich durch die betrügerischen Begierden zugrunde richtet, (Rm 6:6; Ga 6:8; 1P 1:14)23dagegen erneuert werdet in dem[16] Geist eurer Gesinnung[17] (Rm 12:2; Tt 3:5)24und den neuen Menschen angezogen habt, der nach Gott geschaffen ist in wahrhaftiger Gerechtigkeit und Heiligkeit[18]. (Lc 1:75; Ga 3:27; Col 3:10)25Deshalb legt die Lüge[19] ab und redet Wahrheit, ein jeder mit seinem Nächsten! Denn wir sind untereinander Glieder. (Za 8:16; Rm 12:5; Col 3:9; 1P 3:10)26Zürnet, und sündigt ⟨dabei⟩ nicht! Die Sonne gehe nicht unter über eurem Zorn, (Dt 24:15; Ps 4:5; 1Co 15:34)27und gebt dem Teufel keinen Raum! (2Co 2:11; Jc 4:7)28Wer stiehlt[20], stehle nicht mehr, sondern mühe sich vielmehr und wirke mit seinen Händen das Gute, damit er dem Bedürftigen ⟨etwas⟩ mitzugeben hat! (Ac 20:35; 1Th 4:11; Tt 3:14)29Kein faules[21] Wort komme aus eurem Mund, sondern nur eins, das gut ist zur notwendigen[22] Erbauung[23], damit es den Hörenden Gnade gibt! (Mt 15:11; Lc 4:22; Ep 5:4; Col 4:6)30Und betrübt nicht den Heiligen Geist Gottes, mit dem ihr versiegelt worden seid auf den Tag der Erlösung hin! (Is 63:10; Ac 5:3; Ep 1:13; 1Th 5:19)31Alle Bitterkeit und Wut und Zorn und Geschrei und Lästerung sei von euch weggetan, samt aller Bosheit! (Ga 5:20; Col 3:8; 1P 2:1)32Seid[24] aber zueinander gütig, mitleidig, und vergebt einander[25], so wie auch Gott in Christus euch vergeben hat! (Mt 18:22; Lc 17:3; Ep 4:2)
