1Potem Jezus przeprawił się na drugą stronę Jeziora Galilejskiego, zwanego też Jeziorem Tyberiadzkim.2Towarzyszyły Mu tłumy, bo ludzie widzieli, jak w cudowny sposób uzdrawiał chorych.3Jezus wszedł na górę i usiadł tam ze swoimi uczniami.4A zbliżało się wtedy żydowskie święto Paschy.5Gdy Jezus rozejrzał się i zobaczył, nadchodzące ogromne tłumy ludzi, powiedział do Filipa: —Gdzie kupimy chleb, aby ci ludzie mogli coś zjeść?6Zapytał o to, aby wystawić go na próbę. Wiedział bowiem, co ma robić.7—Nawet fortuna nie wystarczyłaby, aby każdy mógł dostać chociaż kawałek chleba—odrzekł Filip.8Wtedy do rozmowy włączył się inny uczeń—Andrzej, brat Szymona Piotra:9—Jest tu chłopiec, który ma pięć jęczmiennych chlebów i dwie ryby. Ale co to jest dla takiego tłumu?10—Każcie wszystkim usiąść!—powiedział Jezus. Ludzie usiedli więc na trawie, a samych tylko mężczyzn było tam około pięciu tysięcy.11Jezus wziął chleby, podziękował za nie Bogu i polecił rozdać je siedzącym—każdemu tyle, ile chciał. To samo zrobił z rybami.12Gdy już wszyscy się najedli, powiedział uczniom: —Pozbierajcie resztki, aby nic się nie zmarnowało.13I z pięciu jęczmiennych chlebów zebrano aż dwanaście koszy resztek chleba!14Gdy ludzie uświadomili sobie, jakiego cudu dokonał Jezus, zaczęli wołać: —To na pewno jest ten prorok, który miał nadejść!15Lecz Jezus zorientował się, że chcą Go zabrać i obwołać królem. Dlatego samotnie oddalił się na górę.
Jezus chodzi po wodzie
16Wieczorem uczniowie zeszli na brzeg,17wsiedli do łodzi i popłynęli w kierunku Kafarnaum.18Wkrótce zerwał się silny wiatr i jezioro bardzo się wzburzyło.19Intensywnie wiosłując, przepłynęli jakieś pięć kilometrów. Nagle zobaczyli Jezusa idącego po wodzie i będącego już blisko łodzi. Przerazili się,20lecz On zawołał: —Nie bójcie się, to Ja!21Chcieli Go wziąć do łodzi, ale okazało się, że właśnie dobijają do brzegu—do miejsca, do którego płynęli.22Następnego dnia, tłum ludzi, zebrany na przeciwległym brzegu, zorientował się, że poza jedną łodzią, którą odpłynęli uczniowie, nie było innej. Wiedzieli też, że Jezus nie wsiadł do łodzi z uczniami, bo odpłynęli sami.23Tymczasem na miejsce, w którym Jezus nakarmił ludzi chlebem, przypłynęły z Tyberiady inne łodzie.24Gdy ludzie zauważyli, że nie ma ani Jezusa, ani uczniów, wsiedli do łodzi i popłynęli do Kafarnaum, aby Go odnaleźć.
Jezus chlebem życia
25Gdy Go znaleźli, zapytali: —Nauczycielu! Kiedy zdążyłeś tu przybyć?26—Zapewniam was, że szukacie Mnie nie dlatego, że ujrzeliście cud, lecz dlatego, że najedliście się do syta—odpowiedział Jezus.27—Starajcie się jednak nie o ten nietrwały pokarm, ale o pokarm dający życie wieczne, który Ja, Syn Człowieczy, mogę wam zapewnić. Po to właśnie posłał Mnie Bóg Ojciec!28—A co mamy zrobić, żeby wypełnić wolę Boga?—pytali.29—Wolą Boga jest to, abyście wierzyli Temu, którego On posłał—odparł Jezus.30—Jakiego cudu dokonasz więc, abyśmy mogli go zobaczyć i uwierzyć ci?31Nasi przodkowie codziennie jedli mannę na pustyni. Pismo mówi: „Dał im do jedzenia chleb z nieba”.32—Zapewniam was, że to nie Mojżesz dawał chleb z nieba—odrzekł Jezus—ale mój Ojciec daje wam teraz prawdziwy chleb z nieba.33Chlebem od Boga jest bowiem Ten, który przychodzi z nieba—to On daje światu życie.34—Panie, dawaj nam zawsze ten chleb—prosili Go.35—To Ja jestem chlebem życia!—odpowiedział Jezus. —Kto do Mnie przychodzi, nie będzie głodny. A kto wierzy Mi, nie zazna pragnienia.36Ale nie pierwszy raz o tym mówię, a wy patrzycie na Mnie i nadal nie wierzycie.37Jednak ci wszyscy, których dał Mi Ojciec, przyjdą do Mnie. A Ja nikogo z nich nie odtrącę.38Przyszedłem bowiem z nieba nie po to, aby działać na własną rękę, lecz żeby wypełnić wolę Ojca, który Mnie posłał.39On nie chce, abym kogoś stracił, ale pragnie, abym wszystkich ożywił w dniu ostatecznym.40Wolą mojego Ojca jest to, aby każdy, kto widzi Syna i wierzy Mu, miał życie wieczne i abym ożywił go w dniu ostatecznym.41Słysząc to, ludzie zaczęli się oburzać, ponieważ powiedział: „To Ja jestem chlebem, który zstąpił z nieba”.42—Przecież to tylko Jezus, syn Józefa!—wykrzykiwali. —Znamy jego ojca i matkę. Jak on może mówić: „Zstąpiłem z nieba?”.43—Dlaczego jesteście oburzeni?—zapytał Jezus.44—Nikt nie może do Mnie przyjść, jeśli nie zostanie przyprowadzony przez Ojca, który Mnie posłał. Tych zaś, którzy przyjdą do Mnie, ożywię w dniu ostatecznym.45W księgach proroków napisano przecież: „Oni wszyscy będą uczniami Boga”. Każdy więc, kto słuchał Ojca i uczył się od Niego, przyjdzie do Mnie.46Nie znaczy to, że ktokolwiek widział Boga Ojca—oprócz Tego, który od Niego przyszedł.47Raz jeszcze zapewniam was: Kto wierzy, ma życie wieczne!48Ja jestem chlebem życia!49Wasi przodkowie jedli wprawdzie mannę na pustyni, ale poumierali.50Natomiast każdy, kto je ten chleb z nieba, nie umrze.51To Ja jestem chlebem życia, przysłanym z nieba. Kto się nim posili, będzie żyć na wieki. Chlebem tym jest moje ciało, które poświęcam, aby dać światu życie.52Wtedy słuchający Go zaczęli się między sobą sprzeczać: —Jak on może dać nam do jedzenia swoje ciało?53—Zapewniam was: Jeżeli nie spożyjecie ciała i krwi Syna Człowieczego—odpowiedział Jezus—nie będziecie mieć w sobie życia.54Kto spożywa moje ciało i krew, już ma życie wieczne, a Ja go ożywię w dniu ostatecznym.55Ciało moje to prawdziwy pokarm, a moja krew to prawdziwy napój.56Kto spożywa moje ciało i krew, jest trwale połączony ze Mną, a Ja—z nim.57Ja żyję dzięki żyjącemu Ojcu, który Mnie posłał. Tak samo ten, kto się Mną karmi, będzie żyć dzięki Mnie.58To właśnie jest chleb z nieba—nie taki, jaki jedli wasi przodkowie i poumierali. Każdy, kto spożywa ten chleb, będzie żył wiecznie.59Tego wszystkiego Jezus nauczał w synagodze w Kafarnaum.
Wielu uczniów opuszcza Jezusa
60Słysząc to, wielu Jego uczniów, mówiło: —To jest zbyt trudne! Któż jest w stanie to pojąć?61Jezus wiedział, że im się to nie podoba. Spytał więc: —Jesteście zniechęceni tym?62Co w takim razie powiecie, gdy zobaczycie Mnie, Syna Człowieczego, wracającego tam, skąd przyszedłem?63Zrozumcie: to Duch daje życie—ludzkie wysiłki nie mają znaczenia. Słowa, które wam powiedziałem, pochodzą właśnie od Ducha i prowadzą do życia.64Ale niektórzy z was nadal Mi nie wierzą. Jezus od początku wiedział bowiem, kto Mu nie wierzy oraz kto Go zdradzi.65Powiedział więc: —To właśnie miałem na myśli, mówiąc, że nikt nie jest w stanie przyjść do Mnie, jeśli go nie przyprowadzi Ojciec.66Po tych słowach wielu uczniów opuściło Jezusa i już z Nim nie chodziło.67Wtedy On zwrócił się do Dwunastu: —Czy i wy chcecie odejść?68—Panie, a do kogo pójdziemy?—odpowiedział Szymon Piotr. —Twoje słowa prowadzą do życia wiecznego!69Uwierzyliśmy Ci i wiemy, że jesteś Świętym Synem Boga.70—Wybrałem was Dwunastu—rzekł Jezus—ale jeden z was jest sługą diabła.71Mówiąc to, miał na myśli Judasza, syna Szymona z Kariotu. To on bowiem, jako należący do grona Dwunastu, miał Go później zdradzić.
1After this Jesus went away to the other side of the Sea of Galilee, which is the Sea of Tiberias. (Jan 2,13; Jan 5,1; Jan 7,2; Jan 11,55)5Lifting up his eyes, then, and seeing that a large crowd was coming toward him, Jesus said to Philip, “Where are we to buy bread, so that these people may eat?” (Łk 6,20; Jan 1,44)6He said this to test him, for he himself knew what he would do.7Philip answered him, “Two hundred denarii[1] worth of bread would not be enough for each of them to get a little.” (Mk 6,37)8One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, said to him, (Jan 1,40; Jan 1,44)9“There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish, but what are they for so many?” (2 Krl 4,42)10Jesus said, “Have the people sit down.” Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, about five thousand in number. (Mk 6,39)11Jesus then took the loaves, and when he had given thanks, he distributed them to those who were seated. So also the fish, as much as they wanted. (Mt 15,36; Jan 6,23)12And when they had eaten their fill, he told his disciples, “Gather up the leftover fragments, that nothing may be lost.”13So they gathered them up and filled twelve baskets with fragments from the five barley loaves left by those who had eaten.14When the people saw the sign that he had done, they said, “This is indeed the Prophet who is to come into the world!” (Mt 11,3; Mt 21,11; Jan 1,21; Jan 4,19; Jan 7,40; Jan 11,27)15Perceiving then that they were about to come and take him by force to make him king, Jesus withdrew again to the mountain by himself. (Mt 8,18; Mt 14,22; Mk 6,45; Jan 6,3; Jan 12,12)
Jesus Walks on Water
16When evening came, his disciples went down to the sea,17got into a boat, and started across the sea to Capernaum. It was now dark, and Jesus had not yet come to them.18The sea became rough because a strong wind was blowing.19When they had rowed about three or four miles,[2] they saw Jesus walking on the sea and coming near the boat, and they were frightened.20But he said to them, “It is I; do not be afraid.” (Łk 24,38)21Then they were glad to take him into the boat, and immediately the boat was at the land to which they were going.
I Am the Bread of Life
22On the next day the crowd that remained on the other side of the sea saw that there had been only one boat there, and that Jesus had not entered the boat with his disciples, but that his disciples had gone away alone. (Jan 21,8)23Other boats from Tiberias came near the place where they had eaten the bread after the Lord had given thanks. (Jan 6,11)24So when the crowd saw that Jesus was not there, nor his disciples, they themselves got into the boats and went to Capernaum, seeking Jesus. (Mt 14,34; Mk 6,53; Jan 6,17; Jan 6,59)25When they found him on the other side of the sea, they said to him, “Rabbi, when did you come here?” (Jan 1,38)26Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you are seeking me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves. (Jan 6,2; Jan 6,24)27Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you. For on him God the Father has set his seal.” (Iz 55,2; Ez 9,4; Dn 7,13; Jan 3,33; Jan 5,36; Jan 6,35; Jan 6,50; Jan 6,54; Jan 6,58; Jan 10,36; Rz 4,11; 1 Kor 9,2; 2 Tm 2,19)28Then they said to him, “What must we do, to be doing the works of God?” (1 Kor 15,58; Ap 2,26)29Jesus answered them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent.” (Jan 3,17; 1 J 3,23)30So they said to him, “Then what sign do you do, that we may see and believe you? What work do you perform? (Mt 12,38)31Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written, ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’” (Wj 16,15; Lb 11,7; Neh 9,15; Ps 78,24; Ps 105,40; Jan 6,49; Jan 6,58; 1 Kor 10,3)32Jesus then said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, but my Father gives you the true bread from heaven.33For the bread of God is he who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” (Jan 6,50)34They said to him, “Sir, give us this bread always.” (Jan 4,15; Jan 4,33)35Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst. (Jan 6,39; Jan 10,28; Jan 10,29; Jan 17,2; Jan 17,6; Jan 17,9; Jan 17,12; Jan 17,24)38For I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will but the will of him who sent me. (Jan 3,13; Jan 4,34; Jan 5,30)39And this is the will of him who sent me, that I should lose nothing of all that he has given me, but raise it up on the last day. (Mt 18,14; Jan 6,37; Jan 6,40; Jan 6,44; Jan 6,54; Jan 10,28; Jan 11,25; Jan 17,12; Jan 18,9; 1 Kor 6,14)40For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who looks on the Son and believes in him should have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.” (Jan 3,15; Jan 4,14; Jan 6,27; Jan 6,47; Jan 6,54; Jan 12,45; Jan 14,17; Jan 14,19)41So the Jews grumbled about him, because he said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven.” (Jan 6,33; Jan 6,35; Jan 6,38)42They said, “Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How does he now say, ‘I have come down from heaven’?” (Mt 13,55; Jan 1,45; Jan 7,27)43Jesus answered them, “Do not grumble among yourselves.44No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him. And I will raise him up on the last day. (Jer 31,3; Oz 11,4; Jan 4,23; Jan 6,39; Jan 6,65; Jan 12,32)45It is written in the Prophets, ‘And they will all be taught by God.’ Everyone who has heard and learned from the Father comes to me— (Iz 54,13; Jer 31,33; Jan 6,37; 1 Kor 2,13; 1 Tes 4,9; Hbr 8,10; 1 J 2,20)46not that anyone has seen the Father except he who is from God; he has seen the Father. (Jan 1,18; Jan 3,32; Jan 7,29; Jan 8,38)47Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes has eternal life. (Jan 3,36)48I am the bread of life. (Jan 6,35)49Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died. (Jan 6,31; Jan 6,58)50This is the bread that comes down from heaven, so that one may eat of it and not die. (Jan 6,33; Jan 6,51; Jan 6,58)51I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. And the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.” (Łk 22,19; Jan 1,14; Jan 3,13; Jan 6,53; Jan 6,57)52The Jews then disputed among themselves, saying, “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?” (Jan 3,9; Jan 6,60; Jan 9,16; Jan 10,19)53So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. (Jan 6,27; Jan 20,31)54Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day. (Jan 6,39; Jan 6,40)55For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink.56Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me, and I in him. (Jan 15,4; 1 J 3,24; 1 J 4,13; 1 J 4,15)57As the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so whoever feeds on me, he also will live because of me. (Mt 16,16; Jan 3,17; Jan 5,26; Jan 11,25; Ap 1,18)58This is the bread that came down from heaven, not like the bread[3] the fathers ate, and died. Whoever feeds on this bread will live forever.” (Jan 6,31; Jan 6,33; Jan 6,49)59Jesus[4] said these things in the synagogue, as he taught at Capernaum. (Jan 6,24)
The Words of Eternal Life
60When many of his disciples heard it, they said, “This is a hard saying; who can listen to it?” (Jan 6,64; Jan 6,66)61But Jesus, knowing in himself that his disciples were grumbling about this, said to them, “Do you take offense at this? (Jan 2,24)62Then what if you were to see the Son of Man ascending to where he was before? (Mk 16,19; Jan 3,13; Jan 6,27; Jan 17,5)63It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is no help at all. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life. (Jan 3,6; Jan 6,68; 1 Kor 15,45; 2 Kor 3,6)64But there are some of you who do not believe.” (For Jesus knew from the beginning who those were who did not believe, and who it was who would betray him.) (Jan 6,61; Jan 6,66; Jan 6,71; Jan 13,11)65And he said, “This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted him by the Father.” (Jan 3,27; Jan 6,44)66After this many of his disciples turned back and no longer walked with him. (Jan 6,60; Jan 6,64)67So Jesus said to the twelve, “Do you want to go away as well?” (Jan 6,70)68Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life, (Jan 12,50; Jan 17,8; Dz 5,20)69and we have believed, and have come to know, that you are the Holy One of God.” (Mk 1,24; Jan 1,49; Jan 11,27; 1 J 4,16)70Jesus answered them, “Did I not choose you, the twelve? And yet one of you is a devil.” (Jan 6,67; Jan 13,2; Jan 13,18; Jan 13,27; Jan 17,12)71He spoke of Judas the son of Simon Iscariot, for he, one of the twelve, was going to betray him. (Jan 6,64; Jan 6,67; Jan 13,26)
