1Sucedeu por aquela altura que Jesus atravessava umas searas com os seus discípulos. Era sábado[1] e, como os discípulos sentiam fome, começaram a arrancar espigas de trigo e a comer o grão.2Mas os fariseus, ao vê-los fazer isso, protestaram: “Os teus discípulos estão a fazer o que não é permitido no dia de sábado!”3Jesus disse-lhes: “Nunca leram o que o rei David fez quando ele e os companheiros estavam com fome,4como entraram na casa de Deus, ele e os seus companheiros, e comeram os pães da Presença, que apenas aos sacerdotes era permitido comer?[2]5E nunca leram na Lei que os sacerdotes de serviço no templo podem trabalhar ao sábado, ficando isentos de culpa?6Pois aqui está um que é maior do que o templo!7Se soubessem o que quer dizer esta passagem das Escrituras: ‘Mais do que os vossos sacrifícios, quero a vossa misericórdia’, não teriam condenado quem não tem culpa.8Porque eu, o Filho do Homem, sou o Senhor do próprio sábado.”
Jesus cura um homem com mão paralisada
9Depois foi para a sinagoga.10E viu ali um homem com uma das mãos aleijadas. Os fariseus perguntaram-lhe: “A Lei permite fazer curas no dia de sábado?” Fizeram-no para terem de que o acusar.11A sua resposta foi: “Qual de vocês, se tivesse apenas uma ovelha e ela caísse numa vala num sábado não iria tratar de tirá-la de lá?12Quanto mais não vale uma pessoa do que uma ovelha! Evidentemente que é justo fazer o bem num sábado.”13E disse ao homem: “Estende o braço!” Ele assim fez e imediatamente a sua mão ficou completamente normal, tal como a outra.
O Servo escolhido por Deus
14Os fariseus saíram, a fim de combinarem como haveriam de o matar.15Jesus, sabendo o que tramavam, partiu dali, seguido por grandes multidões. Curou todos os doentes16e advertiu-os que não revelassem quem ele era.17Assim se cumpriu a profecia de Isaías a seu respeito:18“Aqui está o meu Servo, a quem escolhi. Ele é o meu amado, em quem a minha alma tem prazer. Porei o meu Espírito sobre ele e proclamará a minha justiça às nações.19Não discutirá nem gritará; nem se porá a discutir alto nas praças públicas.20Não esmagará a cana trilhada, nem apagará o pavio que ainda fumega, até fazer triunfar a justiça.21No seu nome as nações têm a sua esperança.”
Jesus e Satanás
22Então um cego e mudo, cativo de demónios, foi trazido a Jesus que o curou, de modo que o homem já falava e via.23A multidão, cheia de espanto, exclamava: “Não será este o Filho de David, o Cristo?”24Mas, quando os fariseus souberam do milagre, puseram-se a dizer: “Expulsa os demónios pelo poder de Belzebu[3], líder dos demónios.”25Jesus, conhecendo os seus pensamentos, respondeu: “Todo o reino dividido fica deserto. E toda a cidade ou casa dividida contra si mesma não subsistirá.26Ora, se Satanás expulsa Satanás, está dividido contra si próprio. Então, como subsistirá o seu reino?27E se expulso os demónios pelo poder de Belzebu, a que poder recorrem os vossos, quando fazem o mesmo? Por esta razão, eles serão os vossos juízes!28Mas, se expulso os demónios pelo Espírito de Deus, então é porque o reino de Deus já está no vosso meio.29Como pode alguém entrar na casa do homem forte e levar os seus bens, sem antes amarrá-lo? Só então poderá roubar-lhe a casa.30Quem não é por mim é contra mim; quem não ajunta comigo, espalha.31Portanto, digo-vos: todo o pecado ou blasfémia pode ser perdoado, exceto a blasfémia contra o Espírito Santo, a qual nunca será perdoada.32Até o dizer mal do Filho do Homem pode ser perdoado, mas há um pecado: falar contra o Espírito Santo, que jamais terá perdão, seja neste mundo seja no futuro.33Uma árvore de boa qualidade dá fruto de boa qualidade e uma árvore de má qualidade dá fruto de má qualidade. Com efeito, uma árvore conhece-se pela qualidade do fruto que dá.34Raça de serpentes! Como podem vocês, que são maus, dizer coisas boas? O que está em abundância no coração vem à superfície no falar.35Um homem bom produz coisas boas do seu bom tesouro interior; e um homem mau produz, do tesouro da sua maldade, coisas más.36E garanto-vos: no dia do juízo hão de dar conta de cada palavra leviana que tiverem dito.37Pelas tuas palavras serás justificado e também por elas serás condenado.”
O sinal de Jonas
38Então, alguns especialistas na Lei e fariseus foram pedir a Jesus: “Mestre, queremos ver um sinal.”39Jesus respondeu-lhes: “Pede esta geração má e adúltera um sinal, mas não receberá nenhum, a não ser o do profeta Jonas!40Pois assim como Jonas passou três dias e três noites dentro daquele grande peixe, assim também o Filho do Homem estará nas entranhas da Terra três dias e três noites.41Também os homens de Nínive se levantarão para condenar esta geração, porque se arrependeram ao ouvir a pregação de Jonas. E agora está aqui alguém que é superior a Jonas.42No dia do juízo, a rainha, de Sabá há de levantar-se e condenar esta geração, porque fez uma viagem longa e difícil para escutar a sabedoria de Salomão. Mas aqui está quem é superior a Salomão.
Regresso do espírito impuro
43Quando um espírito impuro é expulso de um homem vai para lugares áridos, procurando onde ficar; não encontrando lugar, diz:44‘Vou voltar para a morada que deixei.’ E descobre que a sua antiga morada está desocupada, varrida e arranjada.45Então, o demónio vai buscar outros sete espíritos, ainda piores do que ele, e todos entram na tal pessoa para morar nela. E, deste modo, fica pior do que antes. Assim acontecerá a esta geração perversa.”
A mãe e os irmãos de Jesus
46Jesus estava a ensinar às multidões quando apareceram a sua mãe e irmãos à entrada da casa onde ele estava, procurando falar com ele.47Alguém lhe disse: “A tua mãe e irmãos estão lá fora e querem falar contigo.”48Jesus respondeu: “Quem é a minha mãe, e quem são os meus irmãos?”49E, apontando para os seus discípulos, acrescentou: “Estes é que são a minha mãe e os meus irmãos!50Todo aquele que faz a vontade do meu Pai que está nos céus, é meu irmão, minha irmã e minha mãe.”

(Ex 25:30; Lv 24:5)5Or have you not read in the Law how on the Sabbath the priests in the temple profane the Sabbath and are guiltless? (Nm 28:9; 1 Cr 9:32; Jo 7:22)6I tell you, something greater than the temple is here. (Ag 2:9; Ml 3:1; Mt 12:8; Mt 12:41)7And if you had known what this means, ‘I desire mercy, and not sacrifice,’ you would not have condemned the guiltless. (Os 6:6; Mq 6:6; Mt 9:13)8For the Son of Man is lord of the Sabbath.” (Mt 9:6)
A Man with a Withered Hand
9He went on from there and entered their synagogue. (Mc 3:1; Lc 6:6)10And a man was there with a withered hand. And they asked him, “Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath?”—so that they might accuse him. (Mt 12:2; Lc 11:54; Lc 14:3; Lc 20:20; Jo 8:6)11He said to them, “Which one of you who has a sheep, if it falls into a pit on the Sabbath, will not take hold of it and lift it out? (Ex 23:4; Dt 22:4)12Of how much more value is a man than a sheep! So it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath.” (Mt 6:26; Mt 10:31; Jo 5:16)13Then he said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” And the man stretched it out, and it was restored, healthy like the other. (1 Rs 13:4)14But the Pharisees went out and conspired against him, how to destroy him.
God’s Chosen Servant
15Jesus, aware of this, withdrew from there. And many followed him, and he healed them all (Mt 10:23; Mt 19:2; Mc 3:7; Jo 10:39)16and ordered them not to make him known. (Mt 8:4; Mc 1:25; Mc 3:12; Mc 8:30; Lc 4:41; Lc 9:21)17This was to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah: (Mt 1:22)18“Behold, my servant whom I have chosen, my beloved with whom my soul is well pleased. I will put my Spirit upon him, and he will proclaim justice to the Gentiles. (Is 42:1; Is 61:1; Lc 4:18; Jo 3:34; At 4:27; At 4:30; At 10:38)19He will not quarrel or cry aloud, nor will anyone hear his voice in the streets;20a bruised reed he will not break, and a smoldering wick he will not quench, until he brings justice to victory;21and in his name the Gentiles will hope.” (Is 11:10; Is 42:4; Rm 15:12)
Blasphemy Against the Holy Spirit
22Then a demon-oppressed man who was blind and mute was brought to him, and he healed him, so that the man spoke and saw. (Mt 9:32; Lc 11:14)23And all the people were amazed, and said, “Can this be the Son of David?” (Mt 9:27; Jo 4:29; Jo 7:26; Jo 7:31)24But when the Pharisees heard it, they said, “It is only by Beelzebul, the prince of demons, that this man casts out demons.” (Mt 10:25; Mc 3:22)25Knowing their thoughts, he said to them, “Every kingdom divided against itself is laid waste, and no city or house divided against itself will stand. (Mt 9:4; Mc 3:23; Lc 11:17)26And if Satan casts out Satan, he is divided against himself. How then will his kingdom stand?27And if I cast out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your sons cast them out? Therefore they will be your judges. (2 Rs 2:7; At 19:13)28But if it is by the Spirit of God that I cast out demons, then the kingdom of God has come upon you. (Mt 12:18; Mt 19:24; Mt 21:31; Mt 21:43; Lc 17:21)29Or how can someone enter a strong man’s house and plunder his goods, unless he first binds the strong man? Then indeed he may plunder his house. (Is 49:24; Is 53:12)30Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters. (Mc 9:40; Lc 9:50; Lc 11:23)31Therefore I tell you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven people, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven. (Mc 3:28; Lc 12:10; At 7:51; Hb 6:4; Hb 10:26; Hb 10:29; 1 Jo 5:16)32And whoever speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come. (Mt 11:19; Mt 12:31; Jo 7:12; Jo 9:24; Ef 1:21; 1 Tm 1:12)
A Tree Is Known by Its Fruit
33“Either make the tree good and its fruit good, or make the tree bad and its fruit bad, for the tree is known by its fruit. (Mt 7:16; Lc 6:43)34You brood of vipers! How can you speak good, when you are evil? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. (Mt 3:7; Mt 7:11; Mt 13:52; Mt 15:18; Mt 23:33; Lc 6:45; Ef 4:29)35The good person out of his good treasure brings forth good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure brings forth evil. (Mt 12:34)36I tell you, on the day of judgment people will give account for every careless word they speak, (Ec 12:14; At 17:31; Rm 14:12; Ef 5:4; Ef 5:11; 1 Pe 4:5; 2 Pe 1:8)37for by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.” (Mt 5:22; Tg 3:2)
The Sign of Jonah
38Then some of the scribes and Pharisees answered him, saying, “Teacher, we wish to see a sign from you.” (Mt 16:1; Mc 8:11; Lc 11:16; Lc 23:8; Jo 2:18; Jo 4:48; Jo 6:30; 1 Co 1:22)39But he answered them, “An evil and adulterous generation seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. (Is 57:3; Mt 16:4; Mc 8:11; Mc 8:38; Lc 11:29; Tg 4:4)40For just as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. (Jn 1:17; Mt 17:22)41The men of Nineveh will rise up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and behold, something greater than Jonah is here. (Jr 3:11; Ez 16:51; Jn 1:2; Jn 3:5; Mt 12:6; Rm 2:27; Hb 11:7)42The queen of the South will rise up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and behold, something greater than Solomon is here. (1 Rs 10:1; 2 Cr 9:1; Mt 12:41)
Return of an Unclean Spirit
43“When the unclean spirit has gone out of a person, it passes through waterless places seeking rest, but finds none. (Sl 63:1; Jr 2:6; Lc 11:24)44Then it says, ‘I will return to my house from which I came.’ And when it comes, it finds the house empty, swept, and put in order.45Then it goes and brings with it seven other spirits more evil than itself, and they enter and dwell there, and the last state of that person is worse than the first. So also will it be with this evil generation.” (Mt 12:39; Jo 5:14; 2 Pe 2:20)
Jesus’ Mother and Brothers
46While he was still speaking to the people, behold, his mother and his brothers[1] stood outside, asking to speak to him.[2] (Mt 13:55; Mc 3:31; Mc 6:3; Lc 8:19; Jo 2:12; Jo 7:3; Jo 7:5; Jo 7:10; At 1:14; 1 Co 9:5; Gl 1:19)48But he replied to the man who told him, “Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?”49And stretching out his hand toward his disciples, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers!50For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.” (Mt 7:21; Lc 11:28; Jo 15:14; Hb 2:11)
