1În zilele acelea, a ieșit un decret de la Cezar[1] Augustus[2] să se înscrie[3] toată lumea[4].2Acest recensământ s‑a făcut pentru prima oară în timp ce[5] în Siria[6] era guvernator Quirinius[7].3Toți se duceau să se înscrie, fiecare în cetatea lui.4Iosif s‑a suit și el din Galileea, din cetatea Nazaret, înspre Iudeea, în cetatea lui David, numită Betleem,[8] pentru că era din Casa și spița lui David,5ca să se înscrie împreună cu Maria, logodnica lui, care era însărcinată.6În timp ce se aflau acolo, s‑a împlinit vremea ca ea să nască.7Și L‑a născut pe Fiul ei cel întâi născut. Ea L‑a înfășat și L‑a așezat într‑o iesle, pentru că în camera de găzduire nu era loc pentru ei.
Vestea bună adusă păstorilor
8În ținutul acela erau niște păstori care locuiau pe câmp și stăteau de pază noaptea lângă turma lor.9Un înger al Domnului a apărut înaintea lor și slava Domnului a strălucit de jur împrejurul[9] lor. Ei s‑au speriat foarte tare.10Îngerul le‑a zis: „Nu vă temeți, pentru că iată, vă aduc o veste bună, care va fi o mare bucurie pentru tot poporul:11astăzi, în cetatea lui David, vi S‑a născut un Mântuitor, Care este Cristos[10], Domnul!12Iată care va fi semnul pentru voi: veți găsi un Copilaș, înfășat și culcat într‑o iesle.“13Și deodată, împreună cu îngerul s‑a unit o mulțime din oștirea cerească, lăudându‑L pe Dumnezeu și zicând:14„Slavă lui Dumnezeu în înălțimi[11] și pace pe pământ, între oamenii peste care se odihnește bunăvoința Lui![12]“15După ce îngerii au plecat de la ei în ceruri, păstorii și‑au zis unii altora: „Să mergem acum la Betleem și să vedem lucrul acesta care s‑a întâmplat și pe care Domnul ni l‑a făcut cunoscut!“16S‑au dus repede și i‑au găsit pe Maria, pe Iosif și pe Copilaș culcat în iesle.17Când i‑au văzut, le‑au făcut cunoscut ceea ce li se spusese despre Copilul Acesta.18Toți cei care i‑au auzit, au rămas uimiți de ceea ce le‑au spus păstorii.19Maria însă păstra toate aceste cuvinte, cugetând la ele în inima ei.20Apoi păstorii s‑au întors, slăvindu‑L și lăudându‑L pe Dumnezeu pentru toate lucrurile pe care le‑au auzit și le‑au văzut și care erau întocmai cum li se spusese.21Când a venit ziua a opta, în care Copilul trebuia circumcis,[13] I‑au pus numele Isus[14], nume rostit de înger înainte ca El să fi fost conceput în pântec. Isus este prezentat la Templu
22Și când s‑au împlinit zilele pentru curățirea lor, poruncită în Legea lui Moise,[15] s‑au dus cu El la Ierusalim ca să‑L înfățișeze înaintea Domnului – (Lev 12:1)23așa cum este scris în Legea Domnului: „Orice întâi născut, care este băiat,[16] să fie numit sfânt pentru Domnul“ –[17] (Ex 13:2)24și ca să aducă o jertfă, așa cum este spus în Legea Domnului: „O pereche de turturele sau doi pui de porumbel.“[18] (Lev 12:8)25Și iată că în Ierusalim era un om care se numea Simeon. Acest om era drept și evlavios. El aștepta mângâierea[19] lui Israel și Duhul Sfânt era peste el. (Lu 2:11)26Duhul Sfânt îl înștiințase că nu va vedea moartea înainte de a‑L vedea pe Cristosul Domnului.27Călăuzit de Duhul, el a venit în Templu. Când părinții L‑au adus înăuntru pe Copilul Isus, ca să împlinească cu privire la El obiceiul Legii,28Simeon L‑a luat în brațe, L‑a binecuvântat pe Dumnezeu și a zis:29„Acum, Stăpâne, eliberează‑l[20] pe robul Tău în pace, după cuvântul Tău,30căci ochii mei au văzut mântuirea Ta,31pe care ai pregătit‑o în prezența tuturor popoarelor,32o lumină ca revelație pentru neamuri și o slavă pentru poporul Tău Israel!“33Tatăl și mama lui Isus erau uimiți de ceea ce se spunea despre El.34Simeon i‑a binecuvântat și i‑a zis Mariei, mama lui Isus: „Iată, Acesta este rânduit pentru căderea și ridicarea multora în Israel și pentru a fi un semn care va stârni împotrivire,35ca astfel să fie descoperite gândurile din multe inimi. Și o sabie va străpunge chiar sufletul tău!“36Mai era acolo și o profetesă, pe nume Ana, fiica lui Fanuel, din seminția lui Așer. Aceasta era foarte înaintată în vârstă. Ea trăise împreună cu soțul ei timp de șapte ani după fecioria ei,37iar apoi, ca văduvă, ajunsese la optzeci și patru de ani.[21] Ea nu se îndepărta de la Templu, slujind zi și noapte prin posturi și rugăciuni.38A venit acolo chiar în ceasul acela și a început să‑I mulțumească lui Dumnezeu și să le vorbească despre El tuturor celor ce așteptau răscumpărarea Ierusalimului.39După ce au împlinit toate lucrurile poruncite în Legea Domnului, s‑au întors în Galileea, în cetatea lor, Nazaret.40Și Copilul creștea, se întărea[22] și era umplut cu înțelepciune, iar harul lui Dumnezeu era peste El.
Isus în Templu la vârsta de doisprezece ani
41În fiecare an, părinții Lui se duceau la Ierusalim la Sărbătoarea Paștelui.42Când a ajuns El la vârsta de doisprezece ani,[23] s‑au suit la sărbătoare, potrivit obiceiului.43După ce au trecut zilele sărbătorii, la întoarcere, Copilul Isus a rămas în urmă, în Ierusalim. Părinții Lui n‑au știut lucrul acesta.44Ei au crezut că Se află în caravană și au mers așa cale de o zi. Dar când L‑au căutat printre rude și cunoștințe45și nu L‑au găsit, s‑au întors la Ierusalim să‑L caute.46După trei zile, L‑au găsit în Templu, șezând în mijlocul învățătorilor, ascultându‑i și punându‑le întrebări.47Toți cei care‑L auzeau se minunau de priceperea și de răspunsurile Lui.48Când L‑au văzut, părinții Lui au rămas înmărmuriți. Mama Lui I‑a zis: – Copile, de ce ne‑ai făcut aceasta? Iată că tatăl Tău și cu mine Te‑am căutat cu îngrijorare!49El le‑a răspuns: – De ce M‑ați căutat? Nu știați că trebuie să fiu la cele ale Tatălui Meu?[24]50Ei însă n‑au înțeles cuvintele pe care li le‑a spus.51Apoi S‑a coborât împreună cu ei, a venit în Nazaret și le era supus. Mama Lui păstra toate aceste lucruri în inima ei.52Și Isus creștea în înțelepciune, în statură și era plăcut înaintea lui Dumnezeu și a oamenilor.

The Shepherds and the Angels
8And in the same region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.9And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with great fear. (Lu 9:31; Lu 24:4; Fapte 7:55; Fapte 12:7; 2 Cor 3:18)10And the angel said to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Jesus Presented at the Temple
22And when the time came for their purification according to the Law of Moses, they brought him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord (1 Sam 1:22; 1 Sam 1:24; Lu 2:21; Lu 2:27; Gal 4:4)23(as it is written in the Law of the Lord, “Every male who first opens the womb shall be called holy to the Lord”) (Ex 13:2; Ex 13:9; Ex 13:12; 2 Cro 31:3; Lu 2:39)24and to offer a sacrifice according to what is said in the Law of the Lord, “a pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons.” (Lev 12:8; Lu 2:23)25Now there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon, and this man was righteous and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him. (Gen 49:18; Is 25:9; Is 40:1; Is 57:18; Mar 15:43; Lu 1:6; Lu 2:38; Lu 23:51; Fapte 2:5; Fapte 8:2; Fapte 22:12)26And it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Christ. (Lu 2:27)34And Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother, “Behold, this child is appointed for the fall and rising of many in Israel, and for a sign that is opposed (Is 8:14; Mat 21:44; Ioan 9:39; Fapte 28:22; 1 Cor 1:23; 2 Cor 2:16; 1 Pe 2:8)35(and a sword will pierce through your own soul also), so that thoughts from many hearts may be revealed.”36And there was a prophetess, Anna, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was advanced in years, having lived with her husband seven years from when she was a virgin, (Ex 15:20)37and then as a widow until she was eighty-four.[6] She did not depart from the temple, worshiping with fasting and prayer night and day. (Mat 6:16; Lu 5:33; Fapte 13:2; Fapte 14:23; 2 Cor 6:5; 2 Cor 11:27; 1 Tim 5:5)38And coming up at that very hour she began to give thanks to God and to speak of him to all who were waiting for the redemption of Jerusalem. The Return to Nazareth
39And when they had performed everything according to the Law of the Lord, they returned into Galilee, to their own town of Nazareth. (Lu 2:4; Lu 2:23)40And the child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom. And the favor of God was upon him. (Lu 1:80)
The Boy Jesus in the Temple
41Now his parents went to Jerusalem every year at the Feast of the Passover. (Ex 23:15; Deut 16:1; 1 Sam 1:3; Lu 2:27; Ioan 2:13)42And when he was twelve years old, they went up according to custom. (Ioan 11:55)43And when the feast was ended, as they were returning, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem. His parents did not know it, (Ex 12:15; Lev 23:8; Deut 16:3; Lu 2:41)44but supposing him to be in the group they went a day’s journey, but then they began to search for him among their relatives and acquaintances,45and when they did not find him, they returned to Jerusalem, searching for him.46After three days they found him in the temple, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. (Mat 26:55; Lu 5:17)47And all who heard him were amazed at his understanding and his answers.48And when his parents[7] saw him, they were astonished. And his mother said to him, “Son, why have you treated us so? Behold, your father and I have been searching for you in great distress.” (Lu 2:27; Lu 2:49)49And he said to them, “Why were you looking for me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father’s house?”[8] (Lu 13:33; Ioan 2:16; Ioan 14:2)50And they did not understand the saying that he spoke to them. (Mar 9:32; Lu 18:34)51And he went down with them and came to Nazareth and was submissive to them. And his mother treasured up all these things in her heart.
