1Después de esto, Jesús se fue al otro lado del mar de Galilea o de Tiberíades.2Mucha gente lo seguía, porque veía las señales milagrosas que él hacía en los enfermos.3Entonces Jesús subió a una colina y se sentó con sus discípulos.4Faltaba poco tiempo para la Pascua, la fiesta de los judíos.5Cuando Jesús alzó la vista, vio mucha gente que venía hacía él; entonces le dijo a Felipe: ―¿Dónde vamos a comprar pan para tanta gente?6Dijo esto para ponerlo a prueba, porque él ya sabía lo que iba a hacer.7Felipe respondió: ―Ni con el salario de ocho meses de trabajo nos alcanzaría para darle un pedazo de pan a tanta gente.8Andrés, que era otro de sus discípulos y hermano de Simón Pedro, le dijo:9―Aquí hay un muchacho que tiene cinco panes de cebada y dos pescados. Pero, ¿qué es esto para tanta gente?10Jesús les ordenó: ―Díganle a la gente que se siente. Allí había mucha hierba, así que todos se sentaron. Sólo los hombres eran como cinco mil.11Jesús tomó los panes, dio gracias y los fue repartiendo a los que estaban sentados. Luego hizo lo mismo con los pescados. Todos comieron cuanto quisieron.12Cuando ya todos estuvieron satisfechos, les dijo a sus discípulos: ―Recojan los pedazos que sobraron, para que no se desperdicie nada.13Ellos los recogieron, y con los pedazos que sobraron de los panes, llenaron doce canastas.14Al darse cuenta de la señal milagrosa que Jesús realizó, la gente comenzó a decir: ―No cabe duda de que este es el profeta que tenía que venir al mundo.15Jesús se dio cuenta de que querían llevárselo a la fuerza para hacerlo su rey, por lo que se retiró otra vez a la montaña él solo.
Jesús camina sobre el agua
16Al anochecer, sus discípulos bajaron al lago,17subieron a una barca y comenzaron a cruzar el lago rumbo a Capernaúm. Ya había oscurecido y Jesús todavía no regresaba.18Soplaba un fuerte viento que levantó unas olas muy altas.19Los discípulos habían remado unos cinco o seis kilómetros cuando vieron que Jesús caminaba sobre el agua. Él venía hacia la barca y ellos se asustaron.20Pero él les dijo: «Soy yo, no tengan miedo».21Entonces lo recibieron con gusto en la barca y en seguida la barca llegó a la orilla a donde iban.22Al día siguiente, la gente que se había quedado en el otro lado del lago se dio cuenta de que los discípulos se habían ido solos en la única barca que había y que Jesús no se había ido en la barca con ellos.23Otras barcas de Tiberíades llegaron al lugar donde la gente había comido el pan después que el Señor diera gracias.24Cuando la gente se dio cuenta de que ni Jesús ni sus discípulos estaban allí, subió a las barcas y se fue a buscarlo a Capernaúm.
Jesús, el pan de vida
25Cuando lo encontraron al otro lado del lago, le preguntaron: ―Maestro, ¿cuándo llegaste acá?26Jesús les respondió: ―La verdad es que ustedes me buscan, no porque han visto señales milagrosas sino porque comieron hasta llenarse.27No trabajen por la comida que se acaba. Trabajen más bien por la comida que permanece y da vida eterna, que es la comida que el Hijo del hombre les dará. Sobre él ha puesto Dios el Padre su sello de aprobación.28Le preguntaron: ―¿Qué tenemos que hacer para llevar a cabo las obras que Dios exige?29Jesús les respondió: ―La obra que Dios exige es que crean en aquel a quien él envió.30Ellos insistieron: ―¿Qué señal milagrosa harás para que al verla te creamos? ¿Qué puedes hacer?31Nuestros antepasados comieron el maná en el desierto, como dice la Escritura: “Les dio a comer pan del cielo”.32Jesús les respondió: ―Les aseguro que no fue Moisés el que les dio a ustedes el pan del cielo. Mi Padre es el que da el verdadero pan del cielo.33El pan que da Dios es el que baja del cielo y da vida al mundo.34Le dijeron: ―Señor, danos siempre ese pan.35Jesús les dijo: ―Yo soy el pan que da vida. El que viene a mí no volverá a tener hambre, y el que cree en mí no volverá a tener sed.36Pero como ya les dije, aunque ustedes me han visto, no creen en mí.37Todos los que el Padre me da vendrán a mí; y al que viene a mí, no lo rechazo.38Yo he venido del cielo a cumplir la voluntad del que me envió y no la mía.39Y esta es la voluntad del que me envió: que no pierda a ninguno de los que él me ha dado, sino que los resucite en el día final,40porque mi Padre quiere que todo el que reconozca al Hijo y crea en él, tenga vida eterna, y yo lo resucitaré en el día final.41Entonces los judíos empezaron a murmurar contra Jesús, porque dijo: «Yo soy el pan que bajó del cielo».42Y decían: «¿No es este Jesús, el hijo de José? Nosotros conocemos a su padre y a su madre. ¿Cómo se atreve a decir que él bajó del cielo?».43Jesús les respondió: ―Dejen de murmurar.44Nadie puede venir a mí si el Padre que me envió no lo trae, y yo lo resucitaré en el día final.45En los profetas está escrito: “Dios les enseñará a todos”. Así que todos los que escuchan al Padre y aprenden de él, vienen a mí.46Nadie ha visto al Padre, sólo el que viene de Dios ha visto al Padre.47Les aseguro que el que cree tiene vida eterna.48Yo soy el pan de vida.49Los antepasados de ustedes comieron el maná en el desierto, y aun así murieron.50Pero yo soy el pan que baja del cielo; el que come de él, no muere.51Yo soy el pan vivo que bajó del cielo. El que coma de este pan vivirá para siempre. Este pan es mi carne, que daré para que el mundo viva.52Entonces los judíos se pusieron a discutir entre ellos, diciendo: «¿Cómo puede este darnos a comer su carne?».53Jesús les dijo: ―Les aseguro que si no comen la carne del Hijo del hombre y no beben su sangre, no tienen realmente vida.54El que come mi carne y bebe mi sangre tiene vida eterna, y yo lo resucitaré en el día final.55Porque mi carne es comida verdadera y mi sangre es bebida verdadera.56El que come mi carne y bebe mi sangre vive unido a mí y yo vivo unido a él.57Yo vivo por el Padre viviente que me envió; por eso, el que come de mí, vivirá por mí.58Yo soy el pan que bajó del cielo. Los antepasados de ustedes comieron maná y, sin embargo, murieron; pero el que come de este pan vivirá para siempre.59Jesús enseñó todo esto en la sinagoga de Capernaúm.
Muchos discípulos abandonan a Jesús
60Al escucharlo, muchos de sus discípulos dijeron: «Esto que tú enseñas es muy difícil de aceptar. ¿Quién puede estar de acuerdo con eso?».61Jesús comprendió que los discípulos estaban murmurando por lo que había dicho y les preguntó: ―¿Esto les ofende?62¿Qué pasaría si vieran al Hijo del hombre subir a donde antes estaba?63El Espíritu es el que da vida; la carne no vale para nada. Las palabras que yo les he dicho son espíritu y vida.64Pero todavía hay algunos de ustedes que no creen. Es que Jesús sabía desde el principio quiénes eran los que no creían y quién lo traicionaría. Por eso dijo:65―A eso me refería cuando les dije que nadie puede venir a mí, a menos que el Padre se lo permita.66Desde ese momento muchos de sus discípulos lo abandonaron. Entonces, Jesús les preguntó a los doce:67―¿También ustedes quieren irse?68Simón Pedro le contestó: ―Señor, ¿a quién iríamos? Tú tienes palabras de vida eterna.69Y nosotros hemos creído, y sabemos que eres el Santo de Dios.70Jesús les respondió: ―Yo los escogí a ustedes doce, pero uno de ustedes es un diablo.71Hablaba de Judas, hijo de Simón Iscariote, uno de los doce, que lo iba a traicionar.
1After this Jesus went away to the other side of the Sea of Galilee, which is the Sea of Tiberias. (Mt 4:18; Mt 14:13; Mr 6:32; Lc 9:10; Jn 21:1)2And a large crowd was following him, because they saw the signs that he was doing on the sick.3Jesus went up on the mountain, and there he sat down with his disciples. (Jn 6:15)4Now the Passover, the feast of the Jews, was at hand. (Jn 2:13; Jn 5:1; Jn 7:2; Jn 11:55)5Lifting up his eyes, then, and seeing that a large crowd was coming toward him, Jesus said to Philip, “Where are we to buy bread, so that these people may eat?” (Lc 6:20; Jn 1:44)6He said this to test him, for he himself knew what he would do.7Philip answered him, “Two hundred denarii[1] worth of bread would not be enough for each of them to get a little.” (Mr 6:37)8One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, said to him, (Jn 1:40; Jn 1:44)9“There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish, but what are they for so many?” (2 R 4:42)10Jesus said, “Have the people sit down.” Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, about five thousand in number. (Mr 6:39)11Jesus then took the loaves, and when he had given thanks, he distributed them to those who were seated. So also the fish, as much as they wanted. (Mt 15:36; Jn 6:23)12And when they had eaten their fill, he told his disciples, “Gather up the leftover fragments, that nothing may be lost.”13So they gathered them up and filled twelve baskets with fragments from the five barley loaves left by those who had eaten.14When the people saw the sign that he had done, they said, “This is indeed the Prophet who is to come into the world!” (Mt 11:3; Mt 21:11; Jn 1:21; Jn 4:19; Jn 7:40; Jn 11:27)15Perceiving then that they were about to come and take him by force to make him king, Jesus withdrew again to the mountain by himself. (Mt 8:18; Mt 14:22; Mr 6:45; Jn 6:3; Jn 12:12)
Jesus Walks on Water
16When evening came, his disciples went down to the sea,17got into a boat, and started across the sea to Capernaum. It was now dark, and Jesus had not yet come to them.18The sea became rough because a strong wind was blowing.19When they had rowed about three or four miles,[2] they saw Jesus walking on the sea and coming near the boat, and they were frightened.20But he said to them, “It is I; do not be afraid.” (Lc 24:38)21Then they were glad to take him into the boat, and immediately the boat was at the land to which they were going.
I Am the Bread of Life
22On the next day the crowd that remained on the other side of the sea saw that there had been only one boat there, and that Jesus had not entered the boat with his disciples, but that his disciples had gone away alone. (Jn 21:8)23Other boats from Tiberias came near the place where they had eaten the bread after the Lord had given thanks. (Jn 6:11)24So when the crowd saw that Jesus was not there, nor his disciples, they themselves got into the boats and went to Capernaum, seeking Jesus. (Mt 14:34; Mr 6:53; Jn 6:17; Jn 6:59)25When they found him on the other side of the sea, they said to him, “Rabbi, when did you come here?” (Jn 1:38)26Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you are seeking me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves. (Jn 6:2; Jn 6:24)27Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you. For on him God the Father has set his seal.” (Is 55:2; Ez 9:4; Dn 7:13; Jn 3:33; Jn 5:36; Jn 6:35; Jn 6:50; Jn 6:54; Jn 6:58; Jn 10:36; Ro 4:11; 1 Co 9:2; 2 Ti 2:19)28Then they said to him, “What must we do, to be doing the works of God?” (1 Co 15:58; Ap 2:26)29Jesus answered them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent.” (Jn 3:17; 1 Jn 3:23)30So they said to him, “Then what sign do you do, that we may see and believe you? What work do you perform? How does he now say, ‘I have come down from heaven’?” (Mt 13:55; Jn 1:45; Jn 7:27)43Jesus answered them, “Do not grumble among yourselves.44No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him. And I will raise him up on the last day. (Jer 31:3; Os 11:4; Jn 4:23; Jn 6:39; Jn 6:65; Jn 12:32)45It is written in the Prophets, ‘And they will all be taught by God.’ Everyone who has heard and learned from the Father comes to me— (Is 54:13; Jer 31:33; Jn 6:37; 1 Co 2:13; 1 Ts 4:9; Heb 8:10; 1 Jn 2:20)46not that anyone has seen the Father except he who is from God; he has seen the Father. (Jn 1:18; Jn 3:32; Jn 7:29; Jn 8:38)47Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes has eternal life. (Jn 3:36)48I am the bread of life. (Jn 6:27; Jn 20:31)54Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day. (Jn 6:39; Jn 6:40)55For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink.56Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me, and I in him. (Jn 15:4; 1 Jn 3:24; 1 Jn 4:13; 1 Jn 4:15)57As the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so whoever feeds on me, he also will live because of me. The Words of Eternal Life
60When many of his disciples heard it, they said, “This is a hard saying; who can listen to it?” (Jn 6:64; Jn 6:66)61But Jesus, knowing in himself that his disciples were grumbling about this, said to them, “Do you take offense at this? (Jn 2:24)62Then what if you were to see the Son of Man ascending to where he was before? (Mr 16:19; Jn 3:13; Jn 6:27; Jn 17:5)63It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is no help at all. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life. (Jn 3:6; Jn 6:68; 1 Co 15:45; 2 Co 3:6)64But there are some of you who do not believe.” (For Jesus knew from the beginning who those were who did not believe, and who it was who would betray him.) (Jn 6:61; Jn 6:66; Jn 6:71; Jn 13:11)65And he said, “This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted him by the Father.” (Jn 3:27; Jn 6:44)66After this many of his disciples turned back and no longer walked with him. (Jn 6:60; Jn 6:64)67So Jesus said to the twelve, “Do you want to go away as well?” (Jn 6:70)68Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life, (Jn 12:50; Jn 17:8; Hch 5:20)69and we have believed, and have come to know, that you are the Holy One of God.” (Mr 1:24; Jn 1:49; Jn 11:27; 1 Jn 4:16)70Jesus answered them, “Did I not choose you, the twelve? And yet one of you is a devil.” (Jn 6:67; Jn 13:2; Jn 13:18; Jn 13:27; Jn 17:12)71He spoke of Judas the son of Simon Iscariot, for he, one of the twelve, was going to betray him. (Jn 6:64; Jn 6:67; Jn 13:26)
