VIII. Die Leidensgeschichte und der Tod Jesu (Kap. 26-27)

1 Als nun Jesus alle diese Reden beendet hatte, sagte er zu seinen Jüngern: 

2 »Ihr wißt, daß übermorgen das Passah stattfindet; da wird der Menschensohn zur Kreuzigung überliefert.« 

3 Damals kamen die Hohenpriester und die Ältesten des Volkes im Palaste des Hohenpriesters namens Kaiphas zusammen 

4 und berieten sich in der Absicht, Jesus mit List festzunehmen und zu töten. 

5 Dabei sagten sie aber: »Nur nicht während des Festes, damit keine Unruhen unter dem Volk entstehen!« 

6 Als Jesus sich aber in Bethanien im Hause Simons des (einstmals) Aussätzigen befand, 

7 trat eine Frau mit einem Alabastergefäß voll kostbaren Salböls an ihn heran und goß es ihm über das Haupt, während er bei Tische saß (bzw. lag). 

8 Als die Jünger das sahen, wurden sie unwillig und sagten: »Wozu diese Verschwendung? 

9 Dieses (Salböl) hätte man doch teuer verkaufen und den Erlös den Armen geben können.« 

10 Als Jesus es merkte, sagte er zu ihnen: »Warum macht ihr der Frau Vorwürfe? Sie hat ja doch ein gutes Werk an mir getan! 

11 Denn die Armen habt ihr allezeit bei euch, mich aber habt ihr nicht allezeit. 

12 Daß sie dieses Öl auf meinen Leib gegossen hat, das hat sie für mein Begräbnis getan. 

13 Wahrlich ich sage euch: Wo immer diese Heilsbotschaft in der ganzen Welt verkündet wird, da wird man auch von dem, was diese Frau getan hat, zum ehrenden Gedächtnis für sie erzählen.« 

14 Hierauf ging einer von den Zwölfen namens Judas Iskariot zu den Hohenpriestern 

15 und sagte: »Was wollt ihr mir geben, daß ich ihn euch in die Hände liefere?« Da zahlten sie ihm dreißig Silberstücke aus (Sach 11,12). 

16 Von da an suchte er nach einer guten Gelegenheit, um ihn zu überliefern. 

17 Am ersten Tage der ungesäuerten Brote aber traten die Jünger zu Jesus und fragten ihn: »Wo sollen wir dir alles vorbereiten, damit du das Passahmahl halten kannst?« 

18 Er antwortete: »Geht in die Stadt zu dem und dem und sagt zu ihm: ›Der Meister läßt dir sagen: Meine Zeit ist nahe; bei dir will ich das Passahmahl mit meinen Jüngern halten.‹« 

19 Die Jünger taten, wie Jesus ihnen aufgetragen hatte, und richteten das Passahmahl zu. 

20 Als es dann Abend geworden war, setzte er sich mit den zwölf Jüngern zu Tisch; 

21 und während des Essens sagte er: »Wahrlich ich sage euch: Einer von euch wird mich ausliefern!« 

22 Da wurden sie tief betrübt und fragten ihn, einer nach dem andern: »Ich bin es doch nicht etwa, Herr?« 

23 Er antwortete: »Der die Hand zusammen mit mir in die Schüssel getaucht hat, der wird mich ausliefern. 

24 Der Menschensohn geht zwar dahin, wie über ihn in der Schrift steht; doch wehe dem Menschen, durch den der Menschensohn verraten wird! Für diesen Menschen wäre es besser, er wäre nicht geboren!« 

25 Da nahm Judas, der ihn verraten wollte, das Wort und fragte: »Ich bin es doch nicht etwa, Rabbi?« Er erwiderte ihm: »Doch, du bist es.« 

26 Während des Essens aber nahm Jesus das Brot, sprach den Lobpreis (Gottes), brach das Brot und gab es den Jüngern mit den Worten: »Nehmt, esset! Dies ist mein Leib.« 

27 Dann nahm er einen Becher, sprach das Dankgebet und gab ihnen den mit den Worten: »Trinkt alle daraus! 

28 Denn dies ist mein Blut, das Blut des (neuen) Bundes (2.Mose 24,8; Sach 9,11), das für viele vergossen wird zur Vergebung der Sünden. 

29 Ich sage euch aber: Ich werde von nun an von diesem Erzeugnis des Weinstocks nicht mehr trinken bis zu jenem Tage, an dem ich es mit euch neu trinken werde im Reiche meines Vaters.« 

30 Nachdem sie dann den Lobpreis (Ps 115-118) gesungen hatten, gingen sie (aus der Stadt) hinaus an den Ölberg. 

31 Dabei sagte Jesus zu ihnen: »Ihr werdet alle in dieser Nacht an mir Anstoß nehmen; denn es steht geschrieben (Sach 13,7): ›Ich werde den Hirten niederschlagen, dann werden die Schafe der Herde sich zerstreuen.‹ 

32 Nach meiner Auferweckung aber werde ich euch voraus nach Galiläa gehen.« 

33 Da antwortete ihm Petrus: »Mögen auch alle an dir Anstoß nehmen: ich werde niemals an dir Anstoß nehmen!« 

34 Jesus erwiderte ihm: »Wahrlich ich sage dir: Noch in dieser Nacht, ehe der Hahn kräht, wirst du mich dreimal verleugnen.« 

35 Petrus antwortete ihm: »Wenn ich auch mit dir sterben müßte, werde ich dich doch niemals verleugnen!« Das gleiche versicherten auch die anderen Jünger alle. 

36 Hierauf kam Jesus mit ihnen an einen Ort namens Gethsemane und sagte zu den Jüngern: »Setzt euch hier nieder, während ich dorthin gehe und bete!« 

37 Dann nahm er Petrus und die beiden Söhne des Zebedäus mit sich und fing an zu trauern und zu zagen. (Mk 14,33) 

38 Da sagte er zu ihnen: »Tiefbetrübt ist meine Seele bis zum Tode; bleibt hier und haltet euch wach mit mir!« 

39 Nachdem er dann ein wenig weitergegangen war, warf er sich auf sein Angesicht nieder und betete mit den Worten: »Mein Vater, wenn es möglich ist, so laß diesen Kelch an mir vorübergehen! Doch nicht wie ich will, sondern wie du willst!« 

40 Hierauf ging er zu den Jüngern zurück und fand sie schlafend und sagte zu Petrus: »So wenig seid ihr imstande gewesen, eine einzige Stunde mit mir zu wachen? 

41 Wachet, und betet, damit ihr nicht in Versuchung geratet! Der Geist ist willig, das Fleisch aber ist schwach.« 

42 Wiederum ging er zum zweitenmal weg und betete mit den Worten: »Mein Vater, wenn dieser Kelch nicht (an mir) vorübergehen kann, ohne daß ich ihn trinke, so geschehe dein Wille!« 

43 Als er dann zurückkam, fand er sie (wieder) schlafend, denn die Augen fielen ihnen vor Müdigkeit zu. 

44 Da verließ er sie, ging wieder weg und betete zum drittenmal, wieder mit denselben Worten. 

45 Hierauf kehrte er zu den Jüngern zurück und sagte zu ihnen: »Schlaft ein andermal und ruht euch aus! Doch jetzt ist die Stunde gekommen, daß der Menschensohn Sündern in die Hände geliefert wird! 

46 Steht auf, wir wollen gehen! Seht, mein Verräter ist nahe gekommen!« 

47 Während er noch redete, da kam plötzlich Judas, einer von den Zwölfen, und mit ihm eine große Schar mit Schwertern und Knütteln, von den Hohenpriestern und Ältesten des Volkes her. 

48 Sein Verräter hatte aber ein Zeichen mit ihnen verabredet, nämlich: »Der, den ich küssen werde, der ist’s; den nehmt fest!« 

49 Er trat also sogleich auf Jesus zu mit den Worten: »Sei gegrüßt, Rabbi!« und küßte ihn. 

50 Jesus aber sagte zu ihm: »Freund, (tu das) wozu du hergekommen bist!« Hierauf traten sie herzu, legten Hand an Jesus und nahmen ihn fest. 

51 Einer jedoch von den Begleitern Jesu streckte die Hand aus, zog sein Schwert, schlug damit nach dem Knechte des Hohenpriesters und hieb ihm das Ohr ab. 

52 Da sagte Jesus zu ihm: »Stecke dein Schwert wieder an seinen Ort! Denn wer zum Schwerte greift, wird durchs Schwert umkommen! 

53 Oder meinst du, ich könnte meinen Vater nicht bitten, und er würde mir nicht sogleich mehr als zwölf Legionen Engel zu Hilfe senden? 

54 Wie sollten dann aber die Aussprüche der Schrift erfüllt werden, daß es so geschehen muß?« 

55 In jener Stunde sagte Jesus zu den Haufen: »Wie gegen einen Räuber seid ihr mit Schwertern und Knütteln ausgezogen, um mich gefangen zu nehmen. Täglich habe ich im Tempel gesessen und gelehrt, und ihr habt mich nicht festgenommen. 

56 Dies alles ist aber geschehen, damit die Schriften der Propheten erfüllt werden!« Hierauf verließen ihn die Jünger alle und ergriffen die Flucht. 

57 Die Männer aber, die Jesus festgenommen hatten, führten ihn zu dem Hohenpriester Kaiphas ab, wo die Schriftgelehrten und die Ältesten sich versammelten. 

58 Petrus aber folgte ihm von fern bis zum Palast des Hohenpriesters, ging hinein und setzte sich dort unter den Dienern hin, um den Ausgang der Sache abzuwarten. 

59 Die Hohenpriester aber und der gesamte Hohe Rat suchten nach einer falschen Zeugenaussage gegen Jesus, um ihn zum Tode verurteilen zu können; 

60 doch sie fanden keine, obgleich viele falsche Zeugen herzutraten. Zuletzt aber traten zwei auf 

61 und sagten aus: »Dieser Mensch hat behauptet: ›Ich kann den Tempel Gottes abbrechen und ihn in drei Tagen wieder aufbauen.‹« 

62 Da stand der Hohepriester auf und fragte ihn: »Entgegnest du nichts auf das, was diese Zeugen gegen dich aussagen?« Jesus aber schwieg. 

63 Da sagte der Hohepriester zu ihm: »Ich beschwöre dich bei dem lebendigen Gott: Sage uns, bist du Christus, der Sohn Gottes?« 

64 Da gab Jesus ihm zur Antwort: »Ja, ich bin es! Doch ich tue euch kund: Von jetzt an werdet ihr den Menschensohn sitzen sehen zur Rechten der Macht und kommen auf den Wolken des Himmels.« (Dan 7,13; Ps 110,1) 

65 Da zerriß der Hohepriester seine Kleider und sagte: »Er hat Gott gelästert! Wozu brauchen wir noch Zeugen? Jetzt habt ihr selbst die Gotteslästerung gehört! Was urteilt ihr?« 

66 Sie gaben die Erklärung ab: »Er ist des Todes schuldig!« 

67 Hierauf spien sie ihm ins Gesicht und schlugen ihn mit den Fäusten; andere gaben ihm Backenstreiche 

68 und sagten: »Weissage uns, Christus! Wer ist es, der dich geschlagen hat?« 

69 Petrus aber saß (unterdessen) draußen im Hof. Da trat eine Magd auf ihn zu und sagte: »Du bist auch bei Jesus, dem Galiläer, gewesen!« 

70 Er aber leugnete vor allen und sagte: »Ich verstehe nicht, was du da sagst!« 

71 Als er dann in die Torhalle hinausgegangen war, bemerkte ihn eine andere Magd und sagte zu den Leuten dort: »Dieser ist auch mit Jesus, dem Nazoräer, zusammen gewesen!« (Mt 2,23) 

72 Da leugnete er wieder, (diesmal) mit einem Eid: »ich kenne den Menschen nicht!« 

73 Nach einer kleinen Weile aber traten die Leute, die dort standen, hinzu und sagten zu Petrus: »Wahrhaftig, du gehörst auch zu ihnen: schon deine Sprache verrät dich!« 

74 Da fing er an, sich zu verfluchen und zu schwören: »Ich kenne den Menschen nicht!«, und sogleich darauf krähte der Hahn. 

75 Da dachte Petrus an das Wort Jesu, der ihm gesagt hatte: »Noch ehe der Hahn kräht, wirst du mich dreimal verleugnen.« Und er ging hinaus und weinte bitterlich. (Mt 26,34)

The Plot to Kill Jesus

1 When Jesus had finished all these sayings, he said to his disciples, 

2 “You know that after two days the Passover is coming, and the Son of Man will be delivered up to be crucified.” (Mt 20,18; Mt 26,24; Mk 14,1; Lk 22,1; Joh 6,4) 

3 Then the chief priests and the elders of the people gathered in the palace of the high priest, whose name was Caiaphas, (Ps 2,2; Mt 26,57; Mt 26,58; Mt 26,69; Lk 3,2; Lk 11,21; Joh 11,47; Joh 11,49; Joh 18,13; Joh 18,15; Apg 4,6; Apg 4,27; Offb 11,2) 

4 and plotted together in order to arrest Jesus by stealth and kill him. (Mt 21,46; Joh 11,53) 

5 But they said, “Not during the feast, lest there be an uproar among the people.” (Mt 27,24) 

Jesus Anointed at Bethany

6 Now when Jesus was at Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, (Mt 21,17; Mk 14,3; Lk 7,37; Joh 11,18; Joh 12,1) 

7 a woman came up to him with an alabaster flask of very expensive ointment, and she poured it on his head as he reclined at table. 

8 And when the disciples saw it, they were indignant, saying, “Why this waste? 

9 For this could have been sold for a large sum and given to the poor.” (Joh 13,29) 

10 But Jesus, aware of this, said to them, “Why do you trouble the woman? For she has done a beautiful thing to me. (Mt 16,8) 

11 For you always have the poor with you, but you will not always have me. (5Mo 15,11; Mt 9,15; Joh 7,33) 

12 In pouring this ointment on my body, she has done it to prepare me for burial. (Joh 19,40)

Judas to Betray Jesus

14 Then one of the twelve, whose name was Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests (Mt 10,4; Mt 27,3; Mk 14,10; Lk 22,3; Joh 6,71; Joh 12,4; Joh 13,2; Joh 13,27; Joh 13,30; Apg 1,16) 

15 and said, “What will you give me if I deliver him over to you?” And they paid him thirty pieces of silver. (1Mo 23,16; 2Mo 21,32; Jer 32,9; Sach 11,12; Mt 27,3; Mt 27,9) 

16 And from that moment he sought an opportunity to betray him. (Mt 20,18) 

The Passover with the Disciples

17 Now on the first day of Unleavened Bread the disciples came to Jesus, saying, “Where will you have us prepare for you to eat the Passover?” (2Mo 12,18; Mk 14,12; Lk 22,7) 

18 He said, “Go into the city to a certain man and say to him, ‘The Teacher says, My time is at hand. I will keep the Passover at your house with my disciples.’” (Mt 26,45; Joh 7,6; Joh 7,8; Joh 7,30; Joh 8,20; Joh 11,28; Joh 13,1; Joh 17,1) 

19 And the disciples did as Jesus had directed them, and they prepared the Passover.

21 And as they were eating, he said, “Truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me.” (Joh 6,70) 

22 And they were very sorrowful and began to say to him one after another, “Is it I, Lord?”

Institution of the Lord’s Supper

26 Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and after blessing it broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take, eat; this is my body.” (Mt 14,19; Mk 14,22; Lk 22,18; Joh 6,53; 1Kor 10,16; 1Kor 11,23) 

27 And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, saying, “Drink of it, all of you, (Mt 15,36)

Jesus Foretells Peter’s Denial

30 And when they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives. (Mt 21,1; Mk 14,26; Lk 22,39; Joh 18,1) 

31 Then Jesus said to them, “You will all fall away because of me this night. For it is written, ‘I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.’ (Sach 13,7; Joh 16,32) 

32 But after I am raised up, I will go before you to Galilee.” (Mt 28,7; Mt 28,10; Mt 28,16; Mk 16,7) 

33 Peter answered him, “Though they all fall away because of you, I will never fall away.” (Lk 22,31; Lk 22,33) 

34 Jesus said to him, “Truly, I tell you, this very night, before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times.” (Mt 26,75; Lk 22,34; Joh 13,38) 

35 Peter said to him, “Even if I must die with you, I will not deny you!” And all the disciples said the same. (Lk 22,33; Joh 13,37) 

Jesus Prays in Gethsemane

36 Then Jesus went with them to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to his disciples, “Sit here, while I go over there and pray.” (Mt 26,30; Mk 14,32; Lk 22,40) 

37 And taking with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, he began to be sorrowful and troubled. (Mt 4,21; Mt 17,1) 

38 Then he said to them, “My soul is very sorrowful, even to death; remain here, and watch with me.” (Ps 42,5; Mt 24,42; Joh 12,27) 

39 And going a little farther he fell on his face and prayed, saying, “My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will.” (Mt 20,22; Mt 26,42; Joh 5,30; Joh 6,38; Phil 2,8; Hebr 5,7) 

40 And he came to the disciples and found them sleeping. And he said to Peter, “So, could you not watch with me one hour? 

41 Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” (Mt 6,13; Mt 26,38; 1Petr 4,7) 

42 Again, for the second time, he went away and prayed, “My Father, if this cannot pass unless I drink it, your will be done.” (Mt 6,10; Mt 26,39) 

43 And again he came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy. (Lk 9,32) 

44 So, leaving them again, he went away and prayed for the third time, saying the same words again. (2Kor 12,8)

46 Rise, let us be going; see, my betrayer is at hand.” 

Betrayal and Arrest of Jesus

47 While he was still speaking, Judas came, one of the twelve, and with him a great crowd with swords and clubs, from the chief priests and the elders of the people. (Mt 26,14; Mk 14,43; Lk 22,47; Joh 18,3; Apg 1,16) 

48 Now the betrayer had given them a sign, saying, “The one I will kiss is the man; seize him.” 

49 And he came up to Jesus at once and said, “Greetings, Rabbi!” And he kissed him. (Mt 26,25) 

50 Jesus said to him, “Friend, do what you came to do.” Then they came up and laid hands on Jesus and seized him. (Mt 20,13; Mt 22,12; Joh 13,27) 

51 And behold, one of those who were with Jesus stretched out his hand and drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his ear. (Lk 22,38) 

52 Then Jesus said to him, “Put your sword back into its place. For all who take the sword will perish by the sword. (1Mo 9,6; Hes 35,6; Offb 13,10) 

53 Do you think that I cannot appeal to my Father, and he will at once send me more than twelve legions of angels? (2Kön 6,17; Dan 7,10; Mt 4,11; Lk 8,30; Lk 22,43; Joh 10,18; Joh 18,36) 

54 But how then should the Scriptures be fulfilled, that it must be so?” (Mt 1,22; Mt 26,24) 

55 At that hour Jesus said to the crowds, “Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs to capture me? Day after day I sat in the temple teaching, and you did not seize me. (Mt 4,23; Mt 21,23; Lk 2,46; Joh 8,2; Joh 18,20) 

56 But all this has taken place that the Scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled.” Then all the disciples left him and fled. (Ps 88,8; Ps 88,18; Mt 26,31; Mt 26,54; Joh 16,32) 

Jesus Before Caiaphas and the Council

57 Then those who had seized Jesus led him to Caiaphas the high priest, where the scribes and the elders had gathered. (Mt 26,3; Mk 14,53; Lk 22,54; Joh 18,12; Joh 18,19) 

58 And Peter was following him at a distance, as far as the courtyard of the high priest, and going inside he sat with the guards to see the end. (Mt 26,57; Joh 7,32; Joh 18,3; Joh 18,15) 

59 Now the chief priests and the whole council were seeking false testimony against Jesus that they might put him to death, (Apg 6,11) 

60 but they found none, though many false witnesses came forward. At last two came forward (5Mo 19,15; Ps 27,12; Ps 35,11) 

61 and said, “This man said, ‘I am able to destroy the temple of God, and to rebuild it in three days.’” (Mt 27,40; Joh 2,19; Apg 6,14) 

62 And the high priest stood up and said, “Have you no answer to make? What is it that these men testify against you?” 

63 But Jesus remained silent. And the high priest said to him, “I adjure you by the living God, tell us if you are the Christ, the Son of God.” (3Mo 5,1; 1Sam 14,24; 1Sam 14,26; Jes 53,7; Mt 1,17; Mt 14,33; Mt 16,16; Mt 22,42; Mt 27,12; Mt 27,14; Mk 5,7; Lk 22,67; Joh 10,24; Joh 19,9)

65 Then the high priest tore his robes and said, “He has uttered blasphemy. What further witnesses do we need? You have now heard his blasphemy. (4Mo 14,6; Mt 9,3; Joh 10,36; Apg 14,14) 

66 What is your judgment?” They answered, “He deserves death.” (3Mo 24,16) 

67 Then they spit in his face and struck him. And some slapped him, (Jes 50,6; Mt 5,39; Mt 27,30; Mk 10,34; Lk 22,63; Joh 18,22; Apg 23,2) 

68 saying, “Prophesy to us, you Christ! Who is it that struck you?” (Mt 26,63) 

Peter Denies Jesus

69 Now Peter was sitting outside in the courtyard. And a servant girl came up to him and said, “You also were with Jesus the Galilean.” (Mt 26,3; Mk 14,66; Lk 22,55; Joh 18,16; Joh 18,25) 

70 But he denied it before them all, saying, “I do not know what you mean.” 

71 And when he went out to the entrance, another servant girl saw him, and she said to the bystanders, “This man was with Jesus of Nazareth.” (Mt 2,23) 

72 And again he denied it with an oath: “I do not know the man.” 

73 After a little while the bystanders came up and said to Peter, “Certainly you too are one of them, for your accent betrays you.” (Ri 12,6) 

74 Then he began to invoke a curse on himself and to swear, “I do not know the man.” And immediately the rooster crowed. 

75 And Peter remembered the saying of Jesus, “Before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times.” And he went out and wept bitterly. (Mt 26,34; Apg 3,13)
