1Als Israel jung war, gewann ich ihn lieb und rief meinen Sohn aus Ägypten. (2Mo 4,22; 5Mo 7,8; Mt 2,15)2Wie ich sie auch rief, liefen sie weg von mir. Den Baalen opferten sie, und den Bildern räucherten sie.3Ich aber hatte Ephraim laufen gelehrt und sie auf meine Arme genommen. Aber sie merkten nicht, dass ich sie heilte. (2Mo 15,26; Hos 6,1; Hos 7,1; Hos 14,5)4Mit menschlichen Seilen zog ich sie, mit Stricken der Liebe. Ich half ihnen das Joch auf ihrem Nacken tragen. Ich neigte mich zu ihm und gab ihm zu essen.5Er muss zurück nach Ägyptenland, und Assur wird sein König sein; denn sie haben sich geweigert umzukehren.6Das Schwert wird in seinen Städten tanzen und seine Wahrsager vertilgen und sie fressen um ihrer Pläne willen.7Mein Volk verharrt in der Abkehr von mir. Sie rufen zu Baal, dem Hohen, doch der richtet sie nicht auf.8Wie kann ich dich preisgeben, Ephraim, dich ausliefern, Israel? Wie kann ich dich preisgeben gleich Adma und dich zurichten wie Zebojim? Mein Herz wendet sich gegen mich, all mein Mitleid ist entbrannt. (5Mo 29,22; Jer 31,20)9Ich will nicht tun nach meinem grimmigen Zorn noch Ephraim wieder verderben. Denn ich bin Gott und nicht ein Mensch, heilig in deiner Mitte. Darum komme ich nicht im Zorn. (Ps 31,3; Kla 3,31)10Alsdann werden sie dem HERRN nachfolgen. Wie ein Löwe wird er brüllen, und wenn er brüllt, werden zitternd herbeikommen seine Kinder von Westen her. (Jer 25,30; Hos 2,1)11Sie kommen zitternd wie Vögel aus Ägypten und wie Tauben aus dem Land Assur; und ich will sie wieder wohnen lassen in ihren Häusern, spricht der HERR.
