1Nun sah ich, wie das Lamm das erste der sieben Siegel aufbrach. Da hörte ich eine der vier Gestalten mit Donnerstimme rufen: »Komm!«2Und plötzlich erblickte ich ein weißes Pferd. Sein Reiter trug einen Bogen und erhielt die Krone des Siegers. Er kam als Sieger, um erneut zu siegen.3Als das Lamm das zweite Siegel aufbrach, hörte ich die zweite der mächtigen Gestalten sagen: »Komm!«4Diesmal kam ein Reiter auf einem feuerroten Pferd. Ihm wurde ein großes Schwert gegeben. Damit sollte er den Frieden von der Erde nehmen. Erbarmungslos würden sich die Menschen gegenseitig umbringen.5Dann brach das Lamm das dritte Siegel auf, und ich hörte die dritte Gestalt sagen: »Komm!« Und nun sah ich ein schwarzes Pferd. Sein Reiter hielt eine Waage in der Hand.6Da hörte ich eine Stimme, die aus dem Kreis der vier Gestalten zu kommen schien: »Für den Lohn eines ganzen Arbeitstages gibt es nur noch ein Kilo[1] Weizen oder drei Kilo Gerste. Nur Öl und Wein gibt es zum alten Preis!«7Nachdem das vierte Siegel aufgebrochen war, hörte ich die vierte Gestalt sagen: »Komm!«8Da sah ich ein Pferd von aschfahler Farbe. Sein Reiter hieß Tod, und ihm folgte das ganze Totenreich. Sie erhielten die Macht über ein Viertel der Erde, um die Menschen durch Kriege, Hungersnöte, Seuchen und wilde Tiere dahinzuraffen.9Jetzt brach das Lamm das fünfte Siegel auf. Ich sah unten am Altar all die Menschen, die man getötet hatte, weil sie sich treu an Gottes Wort gehalten und bis zuletzt ihren Glauben bekannt hatten.10Laut riefen sie: »Gott, du heiliger und wahrhaftiger Herrscher! Wann endlich sprichst du dein Urteil über all die Menschen auf der Erde, die unser Blut vergossen haben? Wann wirst du sie dafür zur Rechenschaft ziehen?«11Jeder von ihnen bekam ein weißes Gewand, und ihnen wurde gesagt: »Wartet noch kurze Zeit, bis sich das Schicksal eurer Geschwister und Leidensgefährten auf der Erde erfüllt hat, die auch noch getötet werden müssen.«12Als das Lamm das sechste Siegel öffnete, gab es ein gewaltiges Erdbeben. Die Sonne wurde schwarz wie ein Trauerkleid und der Mond rot wie Blut.13Und die Sterne fielen vom Himmel auf die Erde, so wie der Feigenbaum seine Früchte abwirft, wenn er vom Sturm geschüttelt wird.14Der Himmel verschwand vor meinen Augen wie eine Schriftrolle, die man zusammenrollt. Weder Berge noch Inseln blieben an ihren Plätzen.15Angst und Schrecken ergriff die Mächtigen und Herrscher der Erde, die Heerführer, die Reichen und die Starken, die Herren ebenso wie ihre Sklaven. Sie alle suchten Schutz in Höhlen und zwischen den Felsen der Berge.16Und alle schrien zu den Bergen: »Stürzt doch auf uns herab! Verbergt uns vor den Augen dessen, dem alle Macht gehört! Bewahrt uns vor dem Zorn des Lammes!17Der Tag, an dem sie Gericht halten, ist jetzt gekommen. Wer kann da bestehen?«

1Poi vidi quando l’Agnello aprì uno dei sette sigilli e udii una delle quattro creature viventi, che diceva con voce come di tuono: «Vieni».2Guardai e vidi un cavallo bianco. Colui che lo cavalcava aveva un arco; e gli fu data una corona, ed egli venne fuori da vincitore, e per vincere.3Quando l’Agnello aprì il secondo sigillo, udii la seconda creatura vivente che diceva: «Vieni».4E venne fuori un altro cavallo, rosso; e a colui che lo cavalcava fu dato di togliere la pace dalla terra affinché gli uomini si uccidessero gli uni gli altri, e gli fu data una grande spada.5Quando l’Agnello aprì il terzo sigillo, udii la terza creatura vivente che diceva: «Vieni». Guardai e vidi un cavallo nero; e colui che lo cavalcava aveva una bilancia in mano.6E udii come una voce in mezzo alle quattro creature viventi, che diceva: «Una misura di frumento per un denaro e tre misure d’orzo per un denaro[1], ma non danneggiare né l’olio né il vino».7Quando l’Agnello aprì il quarto sigillo, udii la voce della quarta creatura vivente che diceva: «Vieni».8Guardai e vidi un cavallo giallastro; e colui che lo cavalcava si chiamava Morte, e gli veniva dietro l’Ades. Fu dato loro potere sulla quarta parte della terra, per uccidere con la spada, con la fame, con la mortalità e con le belve della terra.9Quando l’Agnello aprì il quinto sigillo, vidi sotto l’altare le anime di quelli che erano stati uccisi per la parola di Dio e per la testimonianza che avevano resa.10Essi gridarono a gran voce: «Fino a quando aspetterai, o Signore santo e veritiero, per fare giustizia e vendicare il nostro sangue su quelli che abitano sulla la terra?»11E a ciascuno di essi fu data una veste bianca e fu loro detto che si riposassero ancora un po’ di tempo, finché fosse completo il numero dei loro compagni di servizio e dei loro fratelli, che dovevano essere uccisi come loro.12Poi vidi quando l’Agnello aprì il sesto sigillo; e si fece un gran terremoto. Il sole diventò nero come un sacco di crine e la luna diventò tutta come sangue;13le stelle del cielo caddero sulla terra come quando un fico scosso da un forte vento lascia cadere i suoi fichi immaturi.14Il cielo si ritirò come una pergamena che si arrotola, e ogni montagna e ogni isola furono rimosse dal loro luogo.15I re della terra, i grandi, i generali, i ricchi, i potenti e ogni schiavo e ogni uomo libero si nascosero nelle spelonche e tra le rocce dei monti.16E dicevano ai monti e alle rocce: «Cadeteci addosso[2], nascondeteci dalla presenza di colui che siede sul trono e dall’ira dell’Agnello;17perché è venuto il gran giorno della loro ira. Chi può resistere?»
