1Jozua liet alle Israëlieten in Sichem bij zich komen met hun leiders, legeraanvoerders en rechters. Zij gaven gehoor aan zijn oproep en kwamen bijeen voor God.2Jozua sprak hen toe: ‘De HERE, de God van Israël, zegt: “Uw voorouders hebben lang geleden ten oosten van de Eufraat gewoond. Zij vereerden andere goden, ook Terach, de vader van Abraham en Nachor.3Ik haalde uw voorvader Abraham weg uit dat land aan de overkant van de rivier, leidde hem naar het land Kanaän en gaf hem door zijn zoon Isaak vele nakomelingen.4De kinderen die Ik Isaak gaf, waren Jakob en Esau. Esau kreeg van Mij het gebied rond de berg Seïr en Jakob en zijn kinderen gingen naar Egypte.5Toen stuurde Ik Mozes en Aäron om vreselijke plagen over Egypte te brengen en bevrijdde Ik mijn volk uit dat land.6Maar toen u bij de Rietzee kwam, achtervolgd door de Egyptenaren met hun strijdwagens en ruiters, riep u Mij te hulp.7Ik legde duisternis tussen u en de Egyptenaren. De zee liet Ik op die Egyptenaren los, zodat zij verdronken. U zag wat Ik deed. De Israëlieten brachten daarna vele jaren door in de woestijn.8Ten slotte bracht Ik u naar het land van de Amorieten aan de overzijde van de Jordaan. Zij vielen u aan, maar Ik vernietigde hen en gaf hun land aan u.9Toen verklaarde koning Balak van Moab u de oorlog en hij vroeg Bileam, de zoon van Beor, of hij u wilde vervloeken.10Maar Ik weigerde naar hem te luisteren. In plaats daarvan zorgde Ik ervoor dat hij u zegende, zo redde Ik Israël uit zijn macht.11Daarna stak u de Jordaan over en bereikte Jericho. De mannen van Jericho streden tegen u, evenals vele anderen, de Perizzieten, de Kanaänieten, de Hethieten, de Girgasieten, de Chiwwieten en de Jebusieten. Eén voor één bonden zij de strijd met u aan, maar Ik vernietigde hen allemaal.12Ik stuurde horzels voor u uit die de twee Amoritische koningen en hun onderdanen verdreven. Het waren niet uw eigen wapens die u de overwinning bezorgden!13Ik gaf u land waarvoor u niet had gewerkt, en steden die u niet zelf had gebouwd, dezelfde steden waarin u nu woont. Ik gaf u wijngaarden en tuinen met olijfbomen om u van voedsel te voorzien, ook al plantte u ze niet.”14Heb daarom diep ontzag voor de HERE en dien Hem oprecht en trouw. Doe de afgodsbeelden die uw voorouders aan de Eufraat en in Egypte vereerden, voor altijd weg. Aanbid alleen de HERE.15Maar als u de HERE niet wilt gehoorzamen, besluit dan vandaag nog wie u wel wilt gehoorzamen. Zullen dat de goden van uw voorouders aan de overzijde van de Eufraat zijn of de goden van de Amorieten in dit land? Maar ik en mijn gezin, wij zullen de HERE dienen.’16Het hele volk antwoordde: ‘Wij zullen de HERE nooit verlaten om andere goden te gaan vereren!17Want de HERE is onze God. Hij heeft onze voorouders uit de slavernij in Egypte bevrijd. Hij is de God die machtige wonderen heeft gedaan voor de ogen van Israël, toen wij door de woestijn trokken. Hij heeft ons ook beschermd tegen onze vijanden, toen wij door hun land reisden.18De HERE verdreef de Amorieten en de andere volken uit dit land. Ja, wij kiezen voor de HERE, want alleen Hij is onze God.’19Maar Jozua antwoordde daarop: ‘U kunt de HERE niet dienen, want Hij is heilig en wil u geheel en al, Hij zal uw opstandigheid en zonden niet vergeven.20Als u Hem de rug toekeert en andere goden gaat vereren, zal Hij Zich tegen u keren en u vernietigen, ook al heeft Hij al die tijd nog zo goed voor u gezorgd.’21Maar het volk verklaarde opnieuw: ‘Wij kiezen voor de HERE!’22‘U hebt het uzelf horen zeggen,’ zei Jozua, ‘u hebt ervoor gekozen de HERE te dienen.’ ‘Ja,’ antwoordden zij, ‘wij zijn er getuigen van.’23‘Goed,’ zei hij, ‘dan moet u alle afgodsbeelden die u bezit, vernietigen en voortaan de HERE, de God van Israël, gehoorzamen.’24Het volk herhaalde opnieuw: ‘Ja, wij zullen alleen de HERE dienen en gehoorzamen.’25Daarom sloot Jozua die dag bij Sichem een overeenkomst met hen, waarbij zij zich verbonden tot het houden van de wetten en rechten die Jozua vaststelde.26Jozua schreef het antwoord van het volk in het wetboek van God, nam een grote steen als gedenkteken en plaatste die onder de eik die naast de tabernakel stond. Dit was een heilige plaats voor de HERE.27Toen zei Jozua tegen het hele volk: ‘Deze steen heeft alles gehoord wat de HERE zei, daarom zal hij tegen u getuigen als u uw woord niet houdt.’28Daarna stuurde Jozua de mensen terug naar hun eigen woonplaats.29Korte tijd later overleed Jozua op de leeftijd van honderdtien jaar.30Hij werd begraven in zijn eigen gebied bij Timnat-Serach, in het bergland van Efraïm, aan de noordkant van de berg Gaäs.31Israël gehoorzaamde de HERE gedurende het hele leven van Jozua en van de leiders die hem overleefden, die persoonlijk getuige waren geweest van de machtige dingen die de HERE voor Israël had gedaan.32De beenderen van Jozef, die het volk Israël uit Egypte had meegenomen, werden begraven in Sichem, in het stuk grond dat Jakob voor honderd zilverstukken had gekocht van de zonen van Chamor. Dat stuk grond lag in het gebied dat was toegewezen aan de stam van Jozef.33Ook Aärons zoon Eleazar stierf, hij werd begraven in het bergland van Efraïm op de berg die aan zijn zoon Pinechas was gegeven.
1Joshua gathered all the tribes of Israel to Shechem and summoned the elders, the heads, the judges, and the officers of Israel. And they presented themselves before God. (Joz 23:2; Joz 24:25; Joz 24:32; 1 Sam 10:19)2And Joshua said to all the people, “Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, ‘Long ago, your fathers lived beyond the Euphrates,[1] Terah, the father of Abraham and of Nahor; and they served other gods. (Gen 11:27; Gen 31:30; Gen 35:2)3Then I took your father Abraham from beyond the River[2] and led him through all the land of Canaan, and made his offspring many. I gave him Isaac. (Gen 12:1; Gen 12:6; Gen 21:2; Hand 7:2)4And to Isaac I gave Jacob and Esau. And I gave Esau the hill country of Seir to possess, but Jacob and his children went down to Egypt. (Gen 25:24; Gen 36:8; Gen 46:1; Gen 46:6; Deut 2:5; Hand 7:15)5And I sent Moses and Aaron, and I plagued Egypt with what I did in the midst of it, and afterward I brought you out. And you lived in the wilderness a long time. (Ex 14:10; Ex 14:20; Ex 14:27; Deut 4:34; Deut 29:2; Joz 5:6)8Then I brought you to the land of the Amorites, who lived on the other side of the Jordan. They fought with you, and I gave them into your hand, and you took possession of their land, and I destroyed them before you. And he sent and invited Balaam the son of Beor to curse you, (Num 22:5; Deut 23:4; Ri 11:25)10but I would not listen to Balaam. Indeed, he blessed you. So I delivered you out of his hand. (Num 23:11; Num 23:20; Num 24:1; Num 24:10)11And you went over the Jordan and came to Jericho, and the leaders of Jericho fought against you, and also the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Girgashites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites. And I gave them into your hand. Choose Whom You Will Serve
14“Now therefore fear the Lord and serve him in sincerity and in faithfulness. Put away the gods that your fathers served beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the Lord. (Deut 10:12; Joz 24:2; Joz 24:23; 1 Sam 12:24)15And if it is evil in your eyes to serve the Lord, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” (Gen 18:19; Ex 23:24; Ex 23:32; Ex 34:15; Deut 13:7; Deut 29:18; Joz 24:14; Joz 24:22; Ri 6:10; 1 Kon 18:21; Ez 20:39)16Then the people answered, “Far be it from us that we should forsake the Lord to serve other gods,17for it is the Lord our God who brought us and our fathers up from the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery, and who did those great signs in our sight and preserved us in all the way that we went, and among all the peoples through whom we passed.18And the Lord drove out before us all the peoples, the Amorites who lived in the land. Therefore we also will serve the Lord, for he is our God.”19But Joshua said to the people, “You are not able to serve the Lord, for he is a holy God. He is a jealous God; he will not forgive your transgressions or your sins. (Ex 20:5; Ex 23:21; Lev 19:2; 1 Sam 6:20; Ps 99:5; Ps 99:9; Jes 5:16; Nah 1:2)20If you forsake the Lord and serve foreign gods, then he will turn and do you harm and consume you, after having done you good.” (Joz 23:15; 1 Kron 28:9; 2 Kron 15:2; Ezra 8:22; Jes 1:28; Jes 63:10; Jes 65:11; Jer 17:13; Hand 7:42)21And the people said to Joshua, “No, but we will serve the Lord.”22Then Joshua said to the people, “You are witnesses against yourselves that you have chosen the Lord, to serve him.” And they said, “We are witnesses.” (Joz 24:15)23He said, “Then put away the foreign gods that are among you, and incline your heart to the Lord, the God of Israel.” (Joz 24:14; Ri 10:16; 1 Sam 7:3)24And the people said to Joshua, “The Lord our God we will serve, and his voice we will obey.”25So Joshua made a covenant with the people that day, and put in place statutes and rules for them at Shechem. (Ex 15:25; 2 Kon 11:17; 2 Kron 23:16; Neh 9:38)26And Joshua wrote these words in the Book of the Law of God. And he took a large stone and set it up there under the terebinth that was by the sanctuary of the Lord. (Gen 28:18; Gen 35:4; Deut 31:24; Joz 4:3; Ri 9:6)27And Joshua said to all the people, “Behold, this stone shall be a witness against us, for it has heard all the words of the Lord that he spoke to us. Therefore it shall be a witness against you, lest you deal falsely with your God.” (Gen 31:48; Gen 31:52; Deut 31:19; Deut 31:21; Deut 31:26; Deut 32:1; Joz 22:27; Joz 22:34)28So Joshua sent the people away, every man to his inheritance. (Ri 2:6)
Joshua’s Death and Burial
29After these things Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of the Lord, died, being 110 years old. (Ri 2:7)30And they buried him in his own inheritance at Timnath-serah, which is in the hill country of Ephraim, north of the mountain of Gaash. (Joz 19:50)31Israel served the Lord all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders who outlived Joshua and had known all the work that the Lord did for Israel. (Deut 11:2; Deut 31:13; Ri 2:7)32As for the bones of Joseph, which the people of Israel brought up from Egypt, they buried them at Shechem, in the piece of land that Jacob bought from the sons of Hamor the father of Shechem for a hundred pieces of money.[3] It became an inheritance of the descendants of Joseph. (Gen 33:19; Gen 50:25; Ex 13:19)33And Eleazar the son of Aaron died, and they buried him at Gibeah, the town of Phinehas his son, which had been given him in the hill country of Ephraim.
