Jozuaʼs opdracht aan de leiders van Israël

1 Nadat de HERE Israël vele jaren vrede had gegeven en Jozua erg oud was geworden, 2 riep deze de leiders van Israël—de oudsten, rechters en legeraanvoerders—bij zich en zei tegen hen: ‘Ik ben nu een oude man, 3 u hebt gezien wat de HERE, uw God, voor u heeft gedaan. Hij heeft voor u tegen uw vijanden gestreden en u hun land gegeven. 4-5 Ik heb het nog onveroverde land net zo onder u verdeeld als het land dat wij wel in bezit hebben genomen. Het hele land tussen de Jordaan en de Middellandse Zee zal van u worden, want de HERE, uw God, zal alle inwoners eruit verdrijven, zodat u er in hun plaats kunt wonen. Dat heeft Hij u beloofd. 6 Wees moedig en zorg ervoor dat u alle geboden die in de wetten van Mozes staan, gehoorzaamt, blijf op het rechte pad. 7 Vermeng u niet met de heidenen die nog in het land wonen, noem zelfs de namen van hun goden niet. En wacht u er helemaal voor bij hen te zweren of hen te vereren. 8 Blijf de HERE, uw God, trouw zoals u tot nu toe hebt gedaan. 9 Hij heeft grote en sterke volken voor u verdreven en niemand is in staat gebleken u te verslaan. 10 Eén man zal duizend vijanden op de vlucht jagen, want de HERE, uw God, vecht voor u, zoals Hij beloofde. 11 Zorg er daarom voor dat u Hem blijft liefhebben. 12 Als u dat niet doet en huwelijken gaat sluiten met de volken om u heen, 13 kunt u er zeker van zijn dat de HERE, uw God, deze volken niet langer uit uw land zal jagen. In plaats daarvan zullen zij een strik en een val voor u worden, een pijn in uw zij en een doorn in uw oog. U zult omkomen in dit goede land dat de HERE, uw God, u heeft gegeven. 14 Ik zal spoedig sterven. U weet heel goed dat Gods beloften aan u allemaal werkelijkheid zijn geworden. Erken dit van ganser harte. 15-16 Maar even zeker als de HERE u deze goede dingen heeft gegeven die Hij had beloofd, zal Hij ook het onheil over u brengen als u Hem niet gehoorzaamt. Want als u andere goden gaat vereren, zal de HERE u uit dit goede land dat Hij u heeft gegeven, wegvagen. Zijn toorn zal tot een uitbarsting komen en het zal in dit land snel met u gedaan zijn.’

Joshua’s Charge to Israel’s Leaders

1 A long time afterward, when the Lord had given rest to Israel from all their surrounding enemies, and Joshua was old and well advanced in years, (Joz 11:23; Joz 13:1) 2 Joshua summoned all Israel, its elders and heads, its judges and officers, and said to them, “I am now old and well advanced in years. (Deut 31:28; Joz 24:1; 1 Kron 28:1) 3 And you have seen all that the Lord your God has done to all these nations for your sake, for it is the Lord your God who has fought for you. (Ex 14:14; Joz 10:14; Joz 10:42) 4 Behold, I have allotted to you as an inheritance for your tribes those nations that remain, along with all the nations that I have already cut off, from the Jordan to the Great Sea in the west. (Joz 13:2) 5 The Lord your God will push them back before you and drive them out of your sight. And you shall possess their land, just as the Lord your God promised you. 6 Therefore, be very strong to keep and to do all that is written in the Book of the Law of Moses, turning aside from it neither to the right hand nor to the left, (Deut 5:32; Deut 28:14; Joz 1:7) 7 that you may not mix with these nations remaining among you or make mention of the names of their gods or swear by them or serve them or bow down to them, (Ex 23:13; Ex 23:33; Deut 7:2; Ps 16:4; Jer 5:7; Zef 1:5)

10 One man of you puts to flight a thousand, since it is the Lord your God who fights for you, just as he promised you. (Ex 14:14; Lev 26:8; Deut 3:22; Deut 32:30; Joz 23:3)

11 Be very careful, therefore, to love the Lord your God. (Joz 22:5) 12 For if you turn back and cling to the remnant of these nations remaining among you and make marriages with them, so that you associate with them and they with you, (Ex 34:16; Deut 7:3) 13 know for certain that the Lord your God will no longer drive out these nations before you, but they shall be a snare and a trap for you, a whip on your sides and thorns in your eyes, until you perish from off this good ground that the Lord your God has given you. 14 “And now I am about to go the way of all the earth, and you know in your hearts and souls, all of you, that not one word has failed of all the good things^[1] that the Lord your God promised concerning you. All have come to pass for you; not one of them has failed. (Joz 21:45; 1 Kon 2:2) 15 But just as all the good things that the Lord your God promised concerning you have been fulfilled for you, so the Lord will bring upon you all the evil things, until he has destroyed you from off this good land that the Lord your God has given you, (Lev 26:14; Deut 28:15) 16 if you transgress the covenant of the Lord your God, which he commanded you, and go and serve other gods and bow down to them. Then the anger of the Lord will be kindled against you, and you shall perish quickly from off the good land that he has given to you.”
