1After this Jesus went away to the other side of the Sea of Galilee, which is the Sea of Tiberias. (Mt 4:18; Mt 14:13; Mr 6:32; Lu 9:10; Joh 21:1)2And a large crowd was following him, because they saw the signs that he was doing on the sick.3Jesus went up on the mountain, and there he sat down with his disciples. (Joh 6:15)4Now the Passover, the feast of the Jews, was at hand. (Joh 2:13; Joh 5:1; Joh 7:2; Joh 11:55)5Lifting up his eyes, then, and seeing that a large crowd was coming toward him, Jesus said to Philip, “Where are we to buy bread, so that these people may eat?” (Lu 6:20; Joh 1:44)6He said this to test him, for he himself knew what he would do.7Philip answered him, “Two hundred denarii[1] worth of bread would not be enough for each of them to get a little.” (Mr 6:37)8One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, said to him, (Joh 1:40; Joh 1:44)9“There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish, but what are they for so many?” (2Ki 4:42)10Jesus said, “Have the people sit down.” Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, about five thousand in number. (Mr 6:39)11Jesus then took the loaves, and when he had given thanks, he distributed them to those who were seated. So also the fish, as much as they wanted. (Mt 15:36; Joh 6:23)12And when they had eaten their fill, he told his disciples, “Gather up the leftover fragments, that nothing may be lost.”13So they gathered them up and filled twelve baskets with fragments from the five barley loaves left by those who had eaten.14When the people saw the sign that he had done, they said, “This is indeed the Prophet who is to come into the world!” (Mt 11:3; Mt 21:11; Joh 1:21; Joh 4:19; Joh 7:40; Joh 11:27)15Perceiving then that they were about to come and take him by force to make him king, Jesus withdrew again to the mountain by himself. Jesus Walks on Water
16When evening came, his disciples went down to the sea,17got into a boat, and started across the sea to Capernaum. It was now dark, and Jesus had not yet come to them.18The sea became rough because a strong wind was blowing.19When they had rowed about three or four miles,[2] they saw Jesus walking on the sea and coming near the boat, and they were frightened.20But he said to them, “It is I; do not be afraid.” (Lu 24:38)21Then they were glad to take him into the boat, and immediately the boat was at the land to which they were going.
I Am the Bread of Life
22On the next day the crowd that remained on the other side of the sea saw that there had been only one boat there, and that Jesus had not entered the boat with his disciples, but that his disciples had gone away alone. (Joh 21:8)23Other boats from Tiberias came near the place where they had eaten the bread after the Lord had given thanks. (Joh 6:11)24So when the crowd saw that Jesus was not there, nor his disciples, they themselves got into the boats and went to Capernaum, seeking Jesus. (Mt 14:34; Mr 6:53; Joh 6:17; Joh 6:59)25When they found him on the other side of the sea, they said to him, “Rabbi, when did you come here?” (Joh 1:38)26Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you are seeking me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves. (Joh 6:2; Joh 6:24)27Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you. And I will raise him up on the last day. (Joh 6:27; Joh 20:31)54Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day. (Joh 6:39; Joh 6:40)55For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink.56Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me, and I in him. (Joh 15:4; 1Jo 3:24; 1Jo 4:13; 1Jo 4:15)57As the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so whoever feeds on me, he also will live because of me. (Mt 16:16; Joh 3:17; Joh 5:26; Joh 11:25; Re 1:18)58This is the bread that came down from heaven, not like the bread[3] the fathers ate, and died. Whoever feeds on this bread will live forever.” (Joh 6:31; Joh 6:33; Joh 6:49)59Jesus[4] said these things in the synagogue, as he taught at Capernaum. (Joh 6:24)
The Words of Eternal Life
60When many of his disciples heard it, they said, “This is a hard saying; who can listen to it?” (Joh 6:64; Joh 6:66)61But Jesus, knowing in himself that his disciples were grumbling about this, said to them, “Do you take offense at this? (Joh 2:24)62Then what if you were to see the Son of Man ascending to where he was before? (Mr 16:19; Joh 3:13; Joh 6:27; Joh 17:5)63It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is no help at all. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life. (Joh 3:6; Joh 6:68; 1Co 15:45; 2Co 3:6)64But there are some of you who do not believe.” (For Jesus knew from the beginning who those were who did not believe, and who it was who would betray him.) (Joh 6:61; Joh 6:66; Joh 6:71; Joh 13:11)65And he said, “This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted him by the Father.” (Joh 3:27; Joh 6:44)66After this many of his disciples turned back and no longer walked with him. (Joh 6:60; Joh 6:64)67So Jesus said to the twelve, “Do you want to go away as well?” (Joh 6:70)68Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life, (Joh 12:50; Joh 17:8; Ac 5:20)69and we have believed, and have come to know, that you are the Holy One of God.” (Mr 1:24; Joh 1:49; Joh 11:27; 1Jo 4:16)70Jesus answered them, “Did I not choose you, the twelve? And yet one of you is a devil.” (Joh 6:67; Joh 13:2; Joh 13:18; Joh 13:27; Joh 17:12)71He spoke of Judas the son of Simon Iscariot, for he, one of the twelve, was going to betray him. (Joh 6:64; Joh 6:67; Joh 13:26)

Il dit à Philippe: «Où achèterons-nous des pains pour que ces gens aient à manger?»6Il disait cela pour le mettre à l'épreuve, car lui-même savait ce qu'il allait faire.7Philippe lui répondit: «Les pains qu'on aurait pour 200 pièces d'argent ne suffiraient pas pour que chacun en reçoive un peu.»8Un de ses disciples, André, le frère de Simon Pierre, lui dit:9«Il y a ici un jeune garçon qui a cinq pains d'orge et deux poissons, mais qu'est-ce que cela pour tant de monde?»10Jésus dit: «Faites asseoir ces gens.» Il y avait beaucoup d'herbe à cet endroit. Ils s'assirent donc, au nombre d'environ 5000 hommes.11Jésus prit les pains, remercia Dieu et les distribua [aux disciples, qui les donnèrent] à ceux qui étaient là; il leur distribua de même des poissons, autant qu'ils en voulurent.12Lorsqu'ils furent rassasiés, il dit à ses disciples: «Ramassez les morceaux qui restent, afin que rien ne se perde.»13Ils les ramassèrent donc et ils remplirent douze paniers avec les morceaux qui restaient des cinq pains d'orge après que tous eurent mangé.14A la vue du signe miraculeux que Jésus avait fait, ces gens disaient: «Cet homme est vraiment le prophète qui doit venir dans le monde.»15Cependant Jésus, sachant qu'ils allaient venir l'enlever pour le faire roi, se retira de nouveau sur la montagne, tout seul.16Le soir venu, ses disciples descendirent au bord du lac.17Ils montèrent dans une barque pour traverser le lac et se rendre à Capernaüm. Il faisait déjà nuit et Jésus ne les avait pas encore rejoints.18Le vent soufflait avec violence et le lac était agité.19Après avoir ramé environ cinq kilomètres, ils virent Jésus qui marchait sur l'eau et s'approchait de la barque, et ils eurent peur.20Mais Jésus leur dit: «C'est moi, n'ayez pas peur!»21Ils voulurent alors le prendre dans la barque, et aussitôt celle-ci aborda à l'endroit où ils allaient.
Jésus, le pain de vie
22Le lendemain, la foule restée de l'autre côté du lac remarqua qu'il n'y avait eu là qu'une seule barque et que Jésus n'était pas monté dedans avec ses disciples, mais que ceux-ci étaient partis seuls.23D'autres barques arrivèrent de Tibériade près de l'endroit où ils avaient mangé le pain après que le Seigneur eut remercié Dieu.24Quand les gens s'aperçurent que ni Jésus ni ses disciples n'étaient là, ils montèrent dans ces barques et allèrent à Capernaüm à la recherche de Jésus.25Ils le trouvèrent de l'autre côté du lac et lui dirent: «Maître, quand es-tu venu ici?»26Jésus leur répondit: «En vérité, en vérité, je vous le dis, vous me cherchez non parce que vous avez vu des signes, mais parce que vous avez mangé du pain et que vous avez été rassasiés.27Travaillez, non pour la nourriture périssable, mais pour celle qui subsiste pour la vie éternelle, celle que le Fils de l'homme vous donnera, car c'est lui que le Père, Dieu lui-même, a marqué de son empreinte[1].»28Ils lui dirent: «Que devons-nous faire pour accomplir les œuvres de Dieu?»29Jésus leur répondit: «L'œuvre de Dieu, c'est que vous croyiez en celui qu'il a envoyé.»30«Quel signe miraculeux fais-tu donc, lui dirent-ils, afin que nous le voyions et que nous croyions en toi? Que fais-tu?31Nos ancêtres ont mangé la manne[2] dans le désert, comme cela est écrit: Il leur a donné le pain du ciel à manger.[3]» (Ex 16:1; Ps 78:24)32Jésus leur dit: «En vérité, en vérité, je vous le dis, ce n'est pas Moïse qui vous a donné le pain du ciel, mais c'est mon Père qui vous donne le vrai pain du ciel.33En effet, le pain de Dieu, c'est celui qui descend du ciel et qui donne la vie au monde.»34Ils lui dirent alors: «Seigneur, donne-nous toujours ce pain-là!»35Jésus leur dit: «C'est moi qui suis le pain de la vie. Celui qui vient à moi n'aura jamais faim et celui qui croit en moi n'aura jamais soif.36Mais, je vous l'ai dit, vous m'avez vu et pourtant vous ne croyez pas.37Tous ceux que le Père me donne viendront à moi et je ne mettrai pas dehors celui qui vient à moi.38En effet, je suis descendu du ciel pour faire non pas ma volonté, mais celle de celui qui m'a envoyé.39[Or, la volonté du Père qui m'a envoyé,] c'est que je ne perde aucun de tous ceux qu'il m'a donnés, mais que je les ressuscite le dernier jour.40En effet, la volonté de mon Père, c'est que toute personne qui voit le Fils et croit en lui ait la vie éternelle, et moi, je la ressusciterai le dernier jour.»41Les Juifs murmuraient à son sujet parce qu'il avait dit: «Je suis le pain descendu du ciel»,42et ils disaient: «N'est-ce pas Jésus, le fils de Joseph, celui dont nous connaissons le père et la mère? Comment donc peut-il dire: ‘Je suis descendu du ciel’?»43Jésus leur répondit: «Ne murmurez pas entre vous.44Personne ne peut venir à moi, à moins que le Père qui m'a envoyé ne l'attire, et moi, je le ressusciterai le dernier jour.45Il est écrit dans les prophètes: Ils seront tous enseignés de Dieu.[4] Ainsi donc, toute personne qui a entendu le Père et s'est laissé instruire vient à moi. (Isa 54:13)46C'est que personne n'a vu le Père, sauf celui qui vient de Dieu; lui, il a vu le Père.47En vérité, en vérité, je vous le dis, celui qui croit [en moi] a la vie éternelle.48Je suis le pain de la vie.49Vos ancêtres ont mangé la manne dans le désert et ils sont morts.50Voici comment est le pain qui descend du ciel: celui qui en mange ne mourra pas.51Je suis le pain vivant descendu du ciel. Si quelqu'un mange de ce pain, il vivra éternellement, et le pain que je donnerai, c'est mon corps, [que je donnerai] pour la vie du monde.»52Là-dessus, les Juifs se mirent à discuter vivement entre eux, disant: «Comment peut-il nous donner son corps à manger?»53Jésus leur dit: «En vérité, en vérité, je vous le dis, si vous ne mangez pas le corps du Fils de l'homme et si vous ne buvez pas son sang, vous n'avez pas la vie en vous-mêmes.54Celui qui mange mon corps et qui boit mon sang a la vie éternelle, et moi, je le ressusciterai le dernier jour.55En effet, mon corps est vraiment une nourriture et mon sang est vraiment une boisson.56Celui qui mange mon corps et qui boit mon sang demeure en moi, et moi je demeure en lui.57Tout comme le Père qui est vivant m'a envoyé et que je vis grâce au Père, ainsi celui qui me mange vivra grâce à moi.58Voilà comment est le pain descendu du ciel. Il n'est pas comme [la manne que vos] ancêtres ont mangée; eux sont morts, mais celui qui mange de ce pain vivra éternellement.»59Jésus dit ces paroles alors qu'il enseignait dans une synagogue, à Capernaüm.60Après l'avoir entendu, beaucoup de ses disciples dirent: «Cette parole est dure. Qui peut l'écouter?»61Jésus savait en lui-même que ses disciples murmuraient à ce sujet. Il leur dit: «Cela vous scandalise?62Si vous voyiez le Fils de l'homme monter là où il était auparavant!63C'est l'Esprit qui fait vivre, l'homme n'arrive à rien. Les paroles que je vous dis sont Esprit et vie,64mais il y en a parmi vous quelques-uns qui ne croient pas.» En effet, Jésus savait dès le début qui étaient ceux qui ne croyaient pas et qui était celui qui le trahirait.65Il ajouta: «Voilà pourquoi je vous ai dit que personne ne peut venir à moi à moins que cela ne lui soit donné par mon Père.»66Dès ce moment, beaucoup de ses disciples se retirèrent et arrêtèrent de marcher avec lui.67Jésus dit alors aux douze: «Et vous, ne voulez-vous pas aussi vous en aller?»68Simon Pierre lui répondit: «Seigneur, à qui irions-nous? Tu as les paroles de la vie éternelle.69Et nous, nous croyons et nous savons que tu es le Messie, le Fils du Dieu vivant.»70Jésus leur répondit: «N'est-ce pas moi qui vous ai choisis, vous les douze? Et l'un de vous est un diable!»71Il parlait de Judas l'Iscariot[5], fils de Simon, car c'était lui qui allait le trahir, lui, l'un des douze.
