1Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men[1] from the east came to Jerusalem, (Ge 25:6; 1Ki 4:30; Lu 1:5; Lu 2:4; Lu 2:15; Joh 7:42)2saying, “Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we saw his star when it rose[2] and have come to worship him.” (Nu 24:17; Jer 23:5; Jer 30:9; Zec 9:9; Mt 8:2; Mt 27:11; Mt 27:37; Re 22:16)3When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him;4and assembling all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born. (Mt 1:17)5They told him, “In Bethlehem of Judea, for so it is written by the prophet:6“‘And you, O Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler who will shepherd my people Israel.’” (2Sa 5:2; Eze 34:23; Mic 5:2; Joh 21:15; Re 7:17)7Then Herod summoned the wise men secretly and ascertained from them what time the star had appeared.8And he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, “Go and search diligently for the child, and when you have found him, bring me word, that I too may come and worship him.”9After listening to the king, they went on their way. And behold, the star that they had seen when it rose went before them until it came to rest over the place where the child was.10When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy.11And going into the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh. (Ex 30:23; 1Sa 9:7; Ps 45:8; Ps 72:10; Isa 60:6; Joh 19:39; Re 18:13)12And being warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed to their own country by another way. (Ge 20:6; Ge 31:11; Nu 12:6; Job 33:15; Mt 2:13; Mt 2:19; Mt 2:22; Mt 27:19)
The Flight to Egypt
13Now when they had departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, “Rise, take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you, for Herod is about to search for the child, to destroy him.” (Mt 1:20; Mt 2:12; Mt 2:19; Mt 2:22)14And he rose and took the child and his mother by night and departed to Egypt15and remained there until the death of Herod. This was to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet, “Out of Egypt I called my son.” (Ho 11:1; Mt 1:22)
Herod Kills the Children
16Then Herod, when he saw that he had been tricked by the wise men, became furious, and he sent and killed all the male children in Bethlehem and in all that region who were two years old or under, according to the time that he had ascertained from the wise men.17Then was fulfilled what was spoken by the prophet Jeremiah: (Mt 1:22; Mt 27:9)18“A voice was heard in Ramah, weeping and loud lamentation, Rachel weeping for her children; she refused to be comforted, because they are no more.” (Ge 42:13; Ge 42:36; Jer 31:15; La 5:7)
The Return to Nazareth
19But when Herod died, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt,20saying, “Rise, take the child and his mother and go to the land of Israel, for those who sought the child’s life are dead.” (Ex 4:19)21And he rose and took the child and his mother and went to the land of Israel.22But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning over Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there, and being warned in a dream he withdrew to the district of Galilee. (Mt 2:12)23And he went and lived in a city called Nazareth, so that what was spoken by the prophets might be fulfilled, that he would be called a Nazarene. (Mt 1:22; Mt 4:13; Mr 1:9; Lu 1:26; Lu 2:39; Lu 4:16; Joh 1:45)
1După ce S‑a născut Isus în Betleemul Iudeei, în zilele regelui Irod[1], iată că niște magi din Răsărit[2] au venit la Ierusalim2și au întrebat: „Unde este Împăratul Care li S‑a născut iudeilor? Căci I‑am văzut steaua răsărind[3] și am venit să ne închinăm Lui!“3Regele Irod s‑a tulburat auzind acest lucru și, împreună cu el, s‑a tulburat tot Ierusalimul.4El i‑a adunat pe toți conducătorii preoților[4] și pe cărturarii[5] poporului și i‑a întrebat unde urma să Se nască Cristosul.5Ei i‑au răspuns: „În Betleemul Iudeei, căci iată ce a fost scris prin profetul:6«Dar tu, Betleeme, ținut al lui Iuda, nu ești nicidecum cel mai neînsemnat dintre conducătorii lui Iuda, căci din tine va ieși un Conducător Care‑l va păstori pe poporul Meu, Israel!»“[6] (Mic 5:2)7Atunci Irod i‑a chemat în secret pe magi și a aflat exact de la ei timpul când apăruse steaua.8Apoi i‑a trimis la Betleem, zicându‑le: „Duceți‑vă, cercetați cu atenție despre Copilaș, iar când Îl veți găsi, anunțați‑mă și pe mine, ca să vin și eu să mă închin Lui!“9După ce l‑au ascultat pe rege, magii au plecat. Și iată că steaua, pe care o văzuseră răsărind, a mers înaintea lor până când a ajuns și s‑a oprit deasupra locului unde era Copilașul.10Văzând ei steaua, s‑au bucurat nespus de mult.11Când au intrat în casă și L‑au văzut pe Copilaș împreună cu Maria, mama Lui, s‑au aruncat la pământ, închinându‑se înaintea Lui. Ei și‑au deschis cuferele și I‑au oferit daruri: aur, tămâie scumpă și smirnă.12Apoi, fiind înștiințați de Dumnezeu în vis să nu se mai întoarcă la Irod, au plecat spre țara lor pe un alt drum.
Fuga în Egipt
13După ce au plecat ei, iată că un înger al Domnului i se arată în vis lui Iosif, zicând: „Scoală‑te, ia Copilașul și pe mama Lui și fugi în Egipt! Să rămâi acolo până când îți voi spune eu, căci Irod va căuta Copilașul ca să‑L omoare[7]!“14Iosif s‑a sculat, a luat Copilașul și pe mama Lui și a plecat în timpul nopții în Egipt,15unde a rămas până la moartea lui Irod, ca să se împlinească ceea ce a spus Domnul prin profetul care zice: „L‑am chemat pe Fiul Meu din Egipt“[8]. (Ho 11:1)16Irod s‑a înfuriat foarte tare când a văzut că a fost înșelat de magi și a trimis oameni să omoare toți băieții de la vârsta de doi ani în jos, care erau în Betleem și în toate împrejurimile lui, potrivit cu timpul pe care‑l aflase exact de la magi.17Atunci s‑a împlinit ceea ce a fost spus prin profetul Ieremia, care zice:18„Un glas a fost auzit în Rama, plânset și bocet mult: Rahela își plânge copiii și nu vrea să fie mângâiată, căci ei nu mai sunt“[9]. (Jer 31:15)
Întoarcerea în Nazaret
19După ce a murit Irod, iată că un înger al Domnului i se arată în vis lui Iosif, în Egipt,20zicând: „Scoală‑te, ia Copilașul și pe mama Lui și du‑te în țara lui Israel, căci au murit cei ce căutau să‑i ia viața Copilașului!“21Iosif s‑a sculat, a luat Copilașul și pe mama Lui și a venit în țara lui Israel.22Dar, când a auzit că în Iudeea domnea Arhelau[10] în locul lui Irod, tatăl lui, s‑a temut să se ducă acolo și, fiind înștiințat de Dumnezeu în vis, s‑a retras în ținuturile Galileei.23S‑a dus acolo și a locuit într‑o cetate numită Nazaret, ca să se împlinească ceea ce a fost spus prin profeți, și anume că El va fi numit nazarinean[11].
