1 Six days before the Passover, Jesus therefore came to Bethany, where Lazarus was, whom Jesus had raised from the dead. (Mt 26:6; Mr 14:3; Joh 11:1; Joh 11:55; Joh 12:12; Joh 12:20) 2 So they gave a dinner for him there. Martha served, and Lazarus was one of those reclining with him at table. (Lu 10:38; Lu 10:40) 3 Mary therefore took a pound[1] of expensive ointment made from pure nard, and anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped his feet with her hair. The house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume. (Lu 7:37) 4 But Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples (he who was about to betray him), said, 5 “Why was this ointment not sold for three hundred denarii[2] and given to the poor?” (Joh 13:29) 6 He said this, not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief, and having charge of the moneybag he used to help himself to what was put into it. (Joh 12:5) 7 Jesus said, “Leave her alone, so that she may keep it[3] for the day of my burial. 8 For the poor you always have with you, but you do not always have me.” 9 When the large crowd of the Jews learned that Jesus[4] was there, they came, not only on account of him but also to see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead. (Joh 11:44) 10 So the chief priests made plans to put Lazarus to death as well, (Lu 16:31) 11 because on account of him many of the Jews were going away and believing in Jesus. (Joh 11:45; Joh 12:18) 

The Triumphal Entry

12 The next day the large crowd that had come to the feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem. (Mt 21:4; Mr 11:7; Lu 19:35) 13 So they took branches of palm trees and went out to meet him, crying out, “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, even the King of Israel!” (Ps 118:25; Joh 1:49; Joh 5:43; Re 7:9) 14 And Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, just as it is written, 15 “Fear not, daughter of Zion; behold, your king is coming, sitting on a donkey’s colt!” (Zec 9:9) 16 His disciples did not understand these things at first, but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things had been written about him and had been done to him. (Mr 9:32; Joh 2:22; Joh 7:39; Joh 12:23; Joh 13:7) 17 The crowd that had been with him when he called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead continued to bear witness. (Lu 19:37) 18 The reason why the crowd went to meet him was that they heard he had done this sign. (Joh 12:9) 19 So the Pharisees said to one another, “You see that you are gaining nothing. Look, the world has gone after him.” (Joh 3:26; Joh 11:47) 20 Now among those who went up to worship at the feast were some Greeks. (1Ki 8:41; Mr 7:26; Joh 7:35; Ac 8:27; Ac 17:4) 21 So these came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and asked him, “Sir, we wish to see Jesus.” (Joh 1:44) 22 Philip went and told Andrew; Andrew and Philip went and told Jesus. (Mr 13:3) 23 And Jesus answered them, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. (Mr 14:41; Joh 2:4; Joh 12:16; Joh 12:27; Joh 13:31; Joh 17:1) 24 Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. (1Co 15:36) 25 Whoever loves his life loses it, and whoever hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. (Mt 10:39; Lu 14:26; Joh 11:25) 26 If anyone serves me, he must follow me; and where I am, there will my servant be also. If anyone serves me, the Father will honor him. (1Sa 2:30; Ps 91:15; Joh 8:12; Joh 14:3; Joh 14:21; Joh 14:23; Joh 16:27; Joh 17:24; Joh 21:18; 2Co 5:8; 1Th 4:17) 27 “Now is my soul troubled. And what shall I say? ‘Father, save me from this hour’? But for this purpose I have come to this hour. (Mr 14:35; Lu 22:44; Joh 11:33; Joh 12:23; Joh 13:21; Joh 18:37; Heb 5:7) 28 Father, glorify your name.” Then a voice came from heaven: “I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again.” (Mt 3:17; Mt 17:5; Mr 1:11; Mr 9:7; Lu 3:22; Lu 9:35; 2Pe 1:17) 29 The crowd that stood there and heard it said that it had thundered. Others said, “An angel has spoken to him.” (Ac 23:9) 30 Jesus answered, “This voice has come for your sake, not mine. (Joh 11:42) 31 Now is the judgment of this world; now will the ruler of this world be cast out. (Mt 13:19; Lu 4:6; Lu 10:18; Joh 14:30; Joh 16:11; Joh 16:33; 2Co 4:4; Eph 2:2; Eph 6:12; Col 2:15; 1Jo 3:8; 1Jo 4:4; 1Jo 5:19) 32 And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.” (Joh 3:14; Joh 6:44; Joh 8:28; Ro 5:18; Ro 8:32; 2Co 5:15; 1Ti 2:6; Heb 2:9; 1Jo 2:2) 33 He said this to show by what kind of death he was going to die. (Joh 18:32) 34 So the crowd answered him, “We have heard from the Law that the Christ remains forever. How can you say that the Son of Man must be lifted up? Who is this Son of Man?” (Ps 89:4; Ps 110:4; Isa 9:7; Eze 37:25; Lu 1:33; Joh 12:32) 35 So Jesus said to them, “The light is among you for a little while longer. Walk while you have the light, lest darkness overtake you. The one who walks in the darkness does not know where he is going. (Isa 9:2; Jer 13:16; Joh 1:4; Joh 1:9; Joh 7:33; Joh 8:12; Joh 11:10; Joh 12:46; Eph 5:8; 1Th 5:4; 1Jo 1:6; 1Jo 2:11) 36 While you have the light, believe in the light, that you may become sons of light.” When Jesus had said these things, he departed and hid himself from them. (Lu 10:6) 37 Though he had done so many signs before them, they still did not believe in him, 38 so that the word spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled: “Lord, who has believed what he heard from us, and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?” (Isa 53:1; Mt 1:22; Ro 10:16) 39 Therefore they could not believe. For again Isaiah said, (Joh 5:44) 40 “He has blinded their eyes and hardened their heart, lest they see with their eyes, and understand with their heart, and turn, and I would heal them.” (Isa 6:10; Mt 13:14; Mr 6:52) 41 Isaiah said these things because he saw his glory and spoke of him. (Isa 6:1; Joh 5:46) 42 Nevertheless, many even of the authorities believed in him, but for fear of the Pharisees they did not confess it, so that they would not be put out of the synagogue; (Joh 3:1; Joh 7:13; Joh 7:48; Joh 9:22) 43 for they loved the glory that comes from man more than the glory that comes from God. (Joh 5:44) 44 And Jesus cried out and said, “Whoever believes in me, believes not in me but in him who sent me. (Mt 10:40; Joh 5:24; Joh 13:20; Joh 14:1; 1Pe 1:21) 45 And whoever sees me sees him who sent me. (Joh 6:40; Joh 14:9) 46 I have come into the world as light, so that whoever believes in me may not remain in darkness. (Joh 1:4; Joh 1:9; Joh 8:12; Joh 12:35) 47 If anyone hears my words and does not keep them, I do not judge him; for I did not come to judge the world but to save the world. (Joh 3:17; Joh 3:36; Joh 4:42; Joh 8:15) 48 The one who rejects me and does not receive my words has a judge; the word that I have spoken will judge him on the last day. (De 18:18; Lu 10:16; Ro 2:16) 49 For I have not spoken on my own authority, but the Father who sent me has himself given me a commandment—what to say and what to speak. (Joh 3:17; Joh 5:19; Joh 5:30; Joh 15:10) 50 And I know that his commandment is eternal life. What I say, therefore, I say as the Father has told me.”

Apoi Andrei și Filip s‑au dus și I‑au spus lui Isus. 23 Isus le‑a răspuns, zicând: – A sosit ceasul ca Fiul Omului să fie proslăvit. 24 Adevărat, adevărat vă spun că, dacă bobul de grâu care cade în pământ nu moare, rămâne singur, dar dacă moare, aduce mult rod. 25 Cel ce‑și iubește viața, o va pierde, dar cel ce‑și urăște[9] viața în lumea aceasta, o va păstra pentru viața veșnică. (Mt 10:37; Mr 14:26) 26 Dacă Îmi slujește cineva, să Mă urmeze; și unde sunt Eu, acolo va fi și slujitorul Meu. Dacă‑Mi slujește cineva, Tatăl îl va cinsti. 27 Acum, sufletul Meu este tulburat. Și ce‑ar trebui să spun? „Tată, salvează‑Mă din ceasul acesta!?“ Dar tocmai de aceea am venit până în ceasul acesta! 28 Tată, proslăvește‑Ți Numele! Atunci a venit din cer un glas care a zis: – L‑am proslăvit și‑l voi proslăvi din nou. 29 Mulțimea care stătea acolo și care a auzit glasul, a zis că a fost un tunet. Alții ziceau: – I‑a vorbit un înger! 30 Isus a răspuns și a zis: – Nu pentru Mine s‑a auzit glasul acesta, ci pentru voi. 31 Acum are loc judecata acestei lumi; acum va fi alungat conducătorul lumii acesteia. 32 Și când voi fi înălțat de pe pământ, îi voi atrage la Mine pe toți. 33 Spunea lucrul acesta pentru a arăta cu ce fel de moarte urma să moară. 34 Atunci mulțimea I‑a răspuns: – Noi am auzit din Lege[10] despre Cristos că rămâne pe veci. Cum spui Tu că Fiul Omului trebuie să fie înălțat?! Cine este Acest Fiu al Omului? (Ps 89:36; Ps 110:4; Isa 9:7; Eze 37:25; Da 7:14) 35 Isus le‑a zis: – Lumina mai este încă puțină vreme în mijlocul vostru. Umblați cât timp aveți Lumina, pentru ca nu cumva să vă învăluie întunecimea. Cel ce umblă în întunecime nu știe unde se duce. 36 Cât timp aveți Lumina, credeți în Lumină, ca să deveniți fii ai Luminii. După ce a spus aceste lucruri, Isus a plecat și S‑a ascuns de ei. 37 Dar, cu toate că făcuse atâtea semne înaintea lor, tot nu credeau în El, 38 ca să se împlinească cuvântul lui Isaia, profetul, care zice: „Doamne, cine a crezut ceea ce noi am auzit? Și brațul Domnului, cui i‑a fost descoperit?“[11] (Isa 53:1) 39 De aceea nu puteau crede, pentru că Isaia a mai zis: 40 „Le‑a orbit ochii și le‑a împietrit inima, ca nu cumva să vadă cu ochii, să înțeleagă cu inima, să se întoarcă și să‑i vindec!“[12] (Isa 6:9) 41 Isaia a spus aceste lucruri pentru că a văzut slava Lui și a vorbit despre El.[13] (Isa 6:1) 42 Totuși, chiar și dintre conducători, mulți au crezut în El, dar, din cauza fariseilor, nu mărturiseau aceasta[14], ca să nu fie excluși din sinagogă. (Joh 9:22) 43 Căci au iubit mai mult slava oamenilor decât slava lui Dumnezeu. 44 Isus a strigat, zicând: „Cel ce crede în Mine, nu crede în Mine, ci în Cel Ce M‑a trimis pe Mine, 45 iar cel ce Mă vede pe Mine Îl vede pe Cel Ce M‑a trimis pe Mine. 46 Eu am venit ca lumină în lume, pentru ca oricine crede în Mine să nu rămână în întunecime. 47 Iar dacă aude cineva cuvintele Mele și nu le păzește, nu Eu îl judec. Căci Eu n‑am venit să judec lumea, ci să mântuiesc lumea. 48 Pe cel ce Mă respinge și nu primește cuvintele Mele are cine să‑l judece: cuvântul pe care l‑am spus Eu, acela îl va judeca în ziua de pe urmă. 49 Căci Eu n‑am vorbit de la Mine Însumi, ci Cel Ce M‑a trimis, Tatăl Însuși, Mi‑a dat poruncă ce să spun și ce să vorbesc. 50 Și știu că porunca Lui este viață veșnică. Prin urmare, lucrurile pe care Eu le spun, le spun așa cum Mi le‑a zis Tatăl.“
