1Now before the Feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart out of this world to the Father, having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end. (Joh 1:11; Joh 6:4; Joh 12:1; Joh 12:23; Joh 13:3; Joh 13:34; Joh 16:28; Joh 17:6; Joh 17:9)2During supper, when the devil had already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, to betray him, (Joh 6:70; Joh 13:11; Joh 13:27; Ac 5:3)3Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had come from God and was going back to God, (Mt 11:27; Joh 8:42; Joh 14:12; Joh 16:28; Joh 17:2; Re 2:27)4rose from supper. He laid aside his outer garments, and taking a towel, tied it around his waist. (Lu 22:27; Joh 21:7)5Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped around him. (2Ki 3:11)6He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Lord, do you wash my feet?”7Jesus answered him, “What I am doing you do not understand now, but afterward you will understand.” (Joh 12:16; Joh 13:12; Joh 13:36; Joh 15:15)8Peter said to him, “You shall never wash my feet.” Jesus answered him, “If I do not wash you, you have no share with me.” (Mt 16:22; 1Co 6:11; Eph 5:26; Tit 3:5; Heb 10:22)9Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, not my feet only but also my hands and my head!”10Jesus said to him, “The one who has bathed does not need to wash, except for his feet,[1] but is completely clean. And you[2] are clean, but not every one of you.” (Ge 18:4; Joh 13:18; Joh 15:3)11For he knew who was to betray him; that was why he said, “Not all of you are clean.” (Joh 2:24; Joh 6:64; Joh 13:2)12When he had washed their feet and put on his outer garments and resumed his place, he said to them, “Do you understand what I have done to you? (Joh 13:4; Joh 13:7)13You call me Teacher and Lord, and you are right, for so I am. (Mt 23:8; Mt 23:10; Lu 6:46; 1Co 8:6; 1Co 12:3; Php 2:11)14If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. (1Ti 5:10; 1Pe 5:5)15For I have given you an example, that you also should do just as I have done to you. (Mt 11:29)16Truly, truly, I say to you, a servant[3] is not greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. (Mt 10:24; Joh 15:20)17If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them. (Lu 11:28; Jas 1:22)18I am not speaking of all of you; I know whom I have chosen. But the Scripture will be fulfilled,[4] ‘He who ate my bread has lifted his heel against me.’ (Ps 41:9; Mt 1:22; Mt 26:23; Mr 3:13; Lu 6:13; Joh 6:70; Joh 13:10; Joh 13:26; Joh 15:16; Joh 15:19; Joh 17:12; Ac 1:2)19I am telling you this now, before it takes place, that when it does take place you may believe that I am he. (Joh 14:29; Joh 16:4)20Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever receives the one I send receives me, and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me.” (Mt 10:40)
One of You Will Betray Me
21After saying these things, Jesus was troubled in his spirit, and testified, “Truly, truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me.” (Mt 26:21; Mr 14:18; Lu 22:21; Joh 12:27; Ac 1:17)22The disciples looked at one another, uncertain of whom he spoke. (Lu 22:23)23One of his disciples, whom Jesus loved, was reclining at table at Jesus’ side,[5] (Lu 16:22; Joh 19:26; Joh 20:2; Joh 21:7; Joh 21:20)24so Simon Peter motioned to him to ask Jesus[6] of whom he was speaking.25So that disciple, leaning back against Jesus, said to him, “Lord, who is it?” (Mr 4:36; Joh 21:20)26Jesus answered, “It is he to whom I will give this morsel of bread when I have dipped it.” So when he had dipped the morsel, he gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot. (Ru 2:14; Mt 26:23; Mt 26:25; Mr 14:20; Joh 6:71)27Then after he had taken the morsel, Satan entered into him. Jesus said to him, “What you are going to do, do quickly.” (Lu 12:50; Lu 22:3; Joh 13:2; 1Co 11:27)28Now no one at the table knew why he said this to him.29Some thought that, because Judas had the moneybag, Jesus was telling him, “Buy what we need for the feast,” or that he should give something to the poor. (Joh 12:5; Joh 12:6; Joh 13:1)30So, after receiving the morsel of bread, he immediately went out. And it was night. (1Sa 28:8)
36Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, where are you going?” Jesus answered him, “Where I am going you cannot follow me now, but you will follow afterward.” (Joh 7:34; Joh 13:7; Joh 14:2; Joh 21:18; 2Pe 1:14)37Peter said to him, “Lord, why can I not follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.” (Mt 26:33; Mr 14:29; Lu 22:33)38Jesus answered, “Will you lay down your life for me? Truly, truly, I say to you, the rooster will not crow till you have denied me three times. (Joh 18:27)
1Înainte de Sărbătoarea Paștelui, Isus știa că I‑a sosit ceasul să plece din lumea aceasta la Tatăl. Și fiindcă îi iubea pe ai Săi, care erau în lume, i‑a iubit până la sfârșit.[1]2În timpul cinei, diavolul pusese deja în inima lui Iuda, fiul lui Simon Iscarioteanul, gândul să‑L trădeze[2].3Isus, știind că Tatăl I‑a dat toate lucrurile în mâini, că de la Dumnezeu a ieșit și la Dumnezeu Se duce,4S‑a ridicat de la cină, Și‑a pus deoparte hainele, a luat un ștergar și S‑a încins cu el.5Apoi a turnat apă într‑un lighean și a început să spele picioarele ucenicilor și să le șteargă cu ștergarul cu care era încins.6Când a ajuns la Simon Petru, acesta I‑a zis: – Doamne, Tu să‑mi speli mie picioarele?!7Isus a răspuns și i‑a zis: – Tu nu pricepi acum ce fac Eu, dar vei înțelege după aceea.8Petru I‑a zis: – În veci nu‑mi vei spăla picioarele! Isus i‑a răspuns: – Dacă nu te spăl, nu vei avea parte cu Mine.9Simon Petru I‑a zis: – Doamne, nu doar picioarele, ci și mâinile și capul!10Isus i‑a zis: – Cel ce s‑a îmbăiat nu are nevoie să‑și spele decât picioarele, dar el este curat în întregime. Și voi sunteți curați, dar nu toți.11Căci El îl știa pe cel ce urma să‑L trădeze. De aceea a spus: „Nu toți sunteți curați.“12După ce le‑a spălat picioarele, Și‑a luat haina și S‑a așezat să mănânce din nou. El le‑a zis: – Înțelegeți voi ce v‑am făcut?13Voi Mă numiți „Învățătorul“ și „Domnul“ și bine ziceți, pentru că sunt.14Așadar, dacă Eu – Domnul și Învățătorul – v‑am spălat picioarele, atunci și voi sunteți datori să vă spălați picioarele unii altora.15Căci Eu v‑am dat un exemplu, ca să faceți și voi așa cum v‑am făcut Eu vouă.16Adevărat, adevărat vă spun că sclavul nu este mai mare decât stăpânul lui, nici apostolul[3] mai mare decât cel ce l‑a trimis.17Dacă știți aceste lucruri, sunteți fericiți dacă le faceți.
Descoperirea trădătorului
18Nu vorbesc despre voi toți; Eu îi cunosc pe cei pe care i‑am ales. Dar trebuie să se împlinească Scriptura, care zice: „Cel ce mănâncă pâinea Mea și‑a ridicat călcâiul împotriva Mea!“[4] (Ps 41:9; Mt 26:17; Mr 14:12; Lu 22:7)19Vă spun lucrul acesta încă de pe acum, înainte să se întâmple, pentru ca, atunci când se va întâmpla, să credeți că Eu sunt.20Adevărat, adevărat vă spun că cine‑l primește pe cel pe care‑l trimit Eu, pe Mine Mă primește, iar cel ce Mă primește pe Mine Îl primește pe Cel Ce M‑a trimis pe Mine.21După ce a spus aceste lucruri, Isus S‑a tulburat în duhul Său și a mărturisit, zicând: – Adevărat, adevărat vă spun că unul dintre voi Mă va trăda.22Ucenicii se uitau unii la alții, fiind nedumeriți despre cine vorbește.23Unul dintre ucenicii Lui, cel pe care‑l iubea Isus[5], ședea la masă rezemat pe pieptul lui Isus. (Joh 21:24)24Simon Petru i‑a făcut semn să‑L întrebe pe Isus cine este cel despre care vorbește.25Atunci ucenicul acela care ședea rezemat pe pieptul lui Isus L‑a întrebat: – Doamne, cine este?26Isus a răspuns: – Este acela căruia îi voi înmuia bucățica de pâine și i‑o voi da. A înmuiat o bucățică de pâine și i‑a dat‑o lui Iuda, fiul lui Simon Iscarioteanul.27Și imediat după ce a primit bucățica de pâine, Satan[6] a intrat în el. Atunci Isus i‑a zis: – Ce ai să faci, fă repede!28Dar niciunul dintre cei ce ședeau la masă n‑a înțeles de ce îi spusese aceasta.29Unii credeau că, de vreme ce Iuda ținea punga, Isus îi spusese: „Cumpără ceea ce avem nevoie pentru sărbătoare!“ sau îi spusese să dea ceva celor săraci.30După ce a luat bucățica de pâine, Iuda a ieșit imediat afară. Era noapte.
Isus prezice lepădarea lui Petru
31După ce acesta a ieșit afară, Isus a zis: – Acum Fiul Omului este proslăvit și Dumnezeu este proslăvit în El. (Mt 26:31; Mr 14:27; Lu 22:31)32Dacă Dumnezeu este proslăvit în El, atunci și Dumnezeu Îl va proslăvi în Sine Însuși și‑L va proslăvi îndată.33Copilași, mai sunt puțin cu voi. Mă veți căuta și, așa cum le‑am spus iudeilor că „Unde Mă duc Eu voi nu puteți veni“, tot așa vă spun și vouă acum.34Vă dau o poruncă nouă: să vă iubiți unii pe alții! Așa cum v‑am iubit Eu, tot așa să vă iubiți și voi unii pe alții.35Prin aceasta vor cunoaște toți că sunteți ucenicii Mei, dacă veți avea dragoste unii pentru alții.36Simon Petru L‑a întrebat: – Doamne, unde Te duci? Isus i‑a răspuns: – Acolo unde Mă duc Eu, tu nu poți să Mă urmezi, dar mai târziu Mă vei urma.37Petru I‑a zis: – Doamne, de ce nu pot să Te urmez acum? Îmi voi da viața pentru Tine!38Isus a răspuns: – Îți vei da viața pentru Mine? Adevărat, adevărat îți spun că nicidecum nu va cânta cocoșul[7] până nu te vei lepăda de Mine de trei ori.
