The Parable of the Wedding Feast

1 And again Jesus spoke to them in parables, saying, (Mt 13:34) 2 “The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who gave a wedding feast for his son, (Lu 14:16; Re 19:7) 3 and sent his servants^[1] to call those who were invited to the wedding feast, but they would not come. (Es 6:14; Pr 9:3; Pr 9:5) 4 Again he sent other servants, saying, ‘Tell those who are invited, “See, I have prepared my dinner, my oxen and my fat calves have been slaughtered, and everything is ready. 5 But they paid no attention and went off, one to his farm, another to his business, (Heb 2:3) 6 while the rest seized his servants, treated them shamefully, and killed them. (Mt 21:35; Lu 18:32; Ac 14:5; 1Th 2:2)

7 The king was angry, and he sent his troops and destroyed those murderers and burned their city. (Mt 21:41; Lu 19:27) 8 Then he said to his servants, ‘The wedding feast is ready, but those invited were not worthy. (Mt 10:11; Lu 20:35; Ac 13:46; Re 3:4)

9 Go therefore to the main roads and invite to the wedding feast as many as you find.’ 10 And those servants went out into the roads and gathered all whom they found, both bad and good. So the wedding hall was filled with guests. (Mt 13:47) 11 “But when the king came in to look at the guests, he saw there a man who had no wedding garment. (Re 19:8; Re 22:14) 12 And he said to him, ‘Friend, how did you get in here without a wedding garment?’ And he was speechless. (Mt 20:13; Mt 26:50) 13 Then the king said to the attendants, ‘Bind him hand and foot and cast him into the outer darkness. Paying Taxes to Caesar

15 Then the Pharisees went and plotted how to entangle him in his words. (Mr 12:13; Lu 11:54; Lu 20:20) 16 And they sent their disciples to him, along with the Herodians, saying, “Teacher, we know that you are true and teach the way of God truthfully, and you do not care about anyone’s opinion, for you are not swayed by appearances.^[2] (Mr 2:18; Mr 3:6; Mr 8:15; Joh 3:2; Ac 10:34; Ac 13:10; Ac 18:26)

17 Tell us, then, what you think. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?” (Mt 17:25; Lu 2:1; Lu 3:1) 18 But Jesus, aware of their malice, said, “Why put me to the test, you hypocrites? (Joh 8:6) 19 Show me the coin for the tax.” And they brought him a denarius.^[3] 20 And Jesus said to them, “Whose likeness and inscription is this?” 21 They said, “Caesar’s.” Then he said to them, “Therefore render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” (Ro 13:7) 22 When they heard it, they marveled. Sadducees Ask About the Resurrection

23 The same day Sadducees came to him, who say that there is no resurrection, and they asked him a question, (Mt 3:7; Mt 16:1; Mt 22:34; Ac 4:1; Ac 4:2; Ac 5:17; Ac 23:6; Ac 23:8)

24 saying, “Teacher, Moses said, ‘If a man dies having no children, his brother must marry the widow and raise up offspring for his brother.’ (De 25:5) 25 Now there were seven brothers among us. The first married and died, and having no offspring left his wife to his brother. 26 So too the second and third, down to the seventh. 27 After them all, the woman died. 28 In the resurrection, therefore, of the seven, whose wife will she be? For they all had her.” 29 But Jesus answered them, “You are wrong, because you know neither the Scriptures nor the power of God. (Joh 20:9; 1Co 6:14) 30 For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven. The Great Commandment

34 But when the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together. (Mt 22:23; Mr 12:28) 35 And one of them, a lawyer, asked him a question to test him. (Mt 22:18; Lu 7:30; Lu 10:25) 36 “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?” 37 And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. (De 6:5; Lu 10:27) 38 This is the great and first commandment. 39 And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. (Le 19:18; Mt 19:19; 1Jo 4:21) 40 On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.” (Mt 7:12; Ro 13:8; Ro 13:10; Ga 5:14)

Whose Son Is the Christ?

41 Now while the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them a question, (Mt 22:34; Mr 12:35; Lu 20:41) 42 saying, “What do you think about the Christ? Whose son is he?” They said to him, “The son of David.” (Mt 1:1; Mt 1:17) 43 He said to them, “How is it then that David, in the Spirit, calls him Lord, saying, (2Sa 23:2; Re 1:10; Re 4:2) 44 “‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at my right hand, until I put your enemies under your feet”’? (Ps 110:1; Ac 2:34; 1Co 15:25; Heb 1:13; Heb 10:13)

45 If then David calls him Lord, how is he his son?” (Ro 1:3) 46 And no one was able to answer him a word, nor from that day did anyone dare to ask him any more questions. (Mr 12:34; Lu 14:6; Lu 20:40)

1 I odpovídaje Ježíš, mluvil jim opět v podobenstvích, řka: 2 Podobno jest království nebeské člověku králi, kterýž učinil svadbu synu svému. 3 I poslal služebníky své, aby povolali pozvaných na svadbu; a oni nechtěli přijíti. 4 Opět poslal jiné služebníky, řka: Povězte pozvaným: Aj, oběd můj připravil jsem, volové moji a krmný dobytek zbit jest, a všecko hotovo. Pojďtež na svadbu. 5 Ale oni nedbavše na to, odešli, jiný do vsi své a jiný po kupectví svém. 6 Jiní pak zjímavše služebníky jeho a posměch jim učinivše, zmordovali. 7 A uslyšav to král, rozhněval se; a poslav vojska svá, zhubil vražedníky ty a město jejich zapálil. 8 Tedy řekl služebníkům svým: Svadba zajisté hotova jest, ale ti, kteříž pozváni byli, nebyli hodni. 9 Protož jděte na rozcestí, a kteréžkoli naleznete, zovtež na svadbu. 10 I vyšedše služebníci ti na cesty, shromáždili všecky, kteréžkoli nalezli, zlé i dobré. A naplněna jest svadba hodovníky. 11 Tedy všed král, aby pohleděl na hodovníky, uzřel tam člověka neoděného rouchem svadebním. 12 I řekl jemu: Příteli, kteraks ty sem všel, nemaje roucha svadebního? A on oněměl. 13 Tedy řekl král služebníkům: Svížíce ruce jeho i nohy, vezměte ho, a uvrztež jej do temností zevnitřních. Tamť bude pláč a škřipení zubů. 14 Nebo mnoho jest povolaných, ale málo vyvolených. 15 Tedy odšedše farizeové, radili se, jak by polapili jej v řeči. 16 I poslali k němu učedlníky své s herodiány, řkouce: Mistře, víme, že pravdomluvný jsi a cestě Boží v pravdě učíš a nedbáš na žádného; nebo nepatříš na osobu lidskou. 17 Protož pověz nám, co se tobě zdá: Sluší-li daň dáti císaři, čili nic? 18 Znaje pak Ježíš zlost jejich, řekl: Co mne pokoušíte, pokrytci? 19 Ukažte mi peníz daně. A oni podali mu peníze. 20 I řekl jim: Čí jest tento obraz a svrchu napsání? 21 Řekli mu: Císařův. Tedy dí jim: Dejtež, co jest císařova, císaři, a co jest Božího, Bohu. 22 To uslyšavše, divili se, a opustivše jej, odešli. 23 V ten den přišli k němu saduceové, kteříž praví, že není z mrtvých vstání. I otázali se ho, 24 Řkouce: Mistře, Mojžíš pověděl: Umřel-li by kdo, nemaje dětí, aby bratr jeho právem švagrovství pojal ženu jeho a vzbudil símě bratru svému. 25 I bylo u nás sedm bratrů. První pojav ženu, umřel, a nemaje semene, zůstavil ženu svou bratru svému. 26 Takž podobně i druhý, i třetí, až do sedmého. 27 Nejposléze pak po všech umřela i žena. 28 Protož při vzkříšení kterého z těch sedmi bude žena? Nebo všickni ji měli. 29 I odpověděv Ježíš, řekl jim: Bloudíte, neznajíce Písem ani moci Boží. 30 Však při vzkříšení ani se nebudou ženiti ani vdávati, ale budou jako andělé Boží v nebi. 31 O vzkříšení pak mrtvých zdaliž jste nečtli, co jest vám povědíno od Boha, kterýž takto dí: 32 Já jsem Bůh Abrahamův a Bůh Izákův a Bůh Jákobův; a Bůhť není Bůh mrtvých, ale živých. 33 A slyševše to zástupové, divili se učení jeho. 34 Farizeové pak uslyšavše, že by k mlčení přivedl saducejské, sešli se v jedno. 35 I otázal se ho jeden z nich zákoník nějaký, pokoušeje ho, a řka: 36 Mistře, které jest přikázání veliké v Zákoně? 37 I řekl mu Ježíš: Milovati budeš Pána Boha svého z celého srdce svého a ze vší duše své a ze vší mysli své. 38 To jest přední a veliké přikázání. 39 Druhé pak jest podobné tomu: Milovati budeš bližního svého jako sebe samého. 40 Na těch dvou přikázáních všecken Zákon záleží i Proroci. 41 A když se sešli farizeové, otázal se jich Ježíš, 42 Řka: Co se vám zdá o Kristu? Čí jest syn? Řkou jemu: Davidův. 43 Dí jim: Kterakž pak David v Duchu nazývá ho Pánem, řka: 44 Řekl Pán Pánu mému: Seď na pravici mé, dokavadž nepodložím nepřátel tvých, aby byli za podnože noh tvých? 45 Poněvadž tedy David Pánem ho nazývá, i kterakž syn jeho jest? 46 A nižádný nemohl jemu odpovědíti slova, aniž se odvážil kdo více od toho dne jeho se nač tázati.
