1Und es geschah nach vielen Tagen, nachdem der HERR Israel Ruhe verschafft hatte vor allen seinen Feinden ringsumher und Josua alt geworden und hochbetagt war, (Jos 13,1; Jos 21,44; 1Sam 12,2; 1Kön 1,1; 1Chr 23,25; 2Chr 14,1)2da rief Josua ganz Israel zusammen, seine Ältesten und seine Häupter und seine Richter und seine Aufseher[1] und sagte zu ihnen: Ich bin alt geworden, ⟨und⟩ ich bin hochbetagt. (Jos 13,1; Jos 24,1; 1Sam 12,2; 1Kön 1,1; 1Kön 8,1; 1Chr 23,2; 1Chr 27,1)3Und ihr, ihr habt alles gesehen, was der HERR, euer Gott, allen diesen Nationen euretwegen[2] getan hat. Denn der HERR, euer Gott, er ist es, der für euch gekämpft hat. (2Mo 19,4; 5Mo 7,17; Jos 10,14)4Seht, ich habe euch diese übrigen Nationen durchs Los als Erbteil zugeteilt nach euren Stämmen, vom Jordan an, sowie alle Nationen, die ich ausgerottet habe, bis an das große Meer gegen Sonnenuntergang. (Jos 18,10; Zef 3,6)5Und der HERR, euer Gott, er selbst wird sie vor euch ausstoßen und sie vor euch vertreiben. Und ihr werdet ihr Land in Besitz nehmen, wie der HERR, euer Gott, zu euch geredet hat. (2Mo 34,11; 4Mo 33,53; Jos 13,6)6So haltet denn ganz fest daran, alles zu befolgen und zu tun, was in dem Buch des Gesetzes Moses geschrieben ist, dass ihr nicht davon abweicht, weder zur Rechten noch zur Linken, (Jos 1,7; 1Kön 2,3; 2Thess 2,15)7damit ihr nicht in diesen Nationen aufgeht, ⟨in⟩ denen, die bei euch übrig geblieben sind! Den Namen ihrer Götter sollt ihr nicht nennen[3]! Ihr sollt nicht ⟨bei ihnen⟩ schwören! Ihr sollt ihnen nicht dienen, und ihr sollt sie nicht anbeten[4]! (2Mo 20,5; 2Mo 23,13; 4Mo 33,55; 5Mo 6,13; 2Kön 5,18; 2Kön 17,12; 2Chr 7,19; Jer 5,7; Zef 1,5; Eph 5,11)8Sondern dem HERRN, eurem Gott, sollt ihr anhängen, so wie ihr es getan habt bis zum heutigen Tag! (5Mo 4,4; 5Mo 8,20; 5Mo 13,5; Jos 22,5)9Und der HERR hat große und starke Nationen vor euch vertrieben. Ihr aber – niemand hat vor euch standgehalten bis zum heutigen Tag: (5Mo 11,23; Jos 24,18; 1Kön 21,26; 2Chr 20,7)10Ein Mann von euch jagt tausend. Denn der HERR, euer Gott, er ist es, der für euch kämpft, wie er zu euch geredet hat. (3Mo 26,8; 5Mo 3,22; 5Mo 32,30; 1Chr 5,20)11So achtet um eures Lebens willen genau darauf[5], den HERRN, euren Gott, zu lieben! (5Mo 4,9; 5Mo 30,16; Apg 20,28)12Denn wenn ihr euch abwendet und euch an den Rest dieser Nationen hängt, an die, die bei euch übrig geblieben sind, und euch mit ihnen verschwägert und in ihnen aufgeht und sie in euch, (2Mo 34,16; Ri 14,3; Esr 9,1; Zef 1,6; 2Kor 6,14)13dann sollt ihr mit Sicherheit wissen, dass der HERR, euer Gott, nicht fortfahren wird, diese Nationen vor euch zu vertreiben. Und sie werden euch ⟨dann⟩ zum Fangnetz und zur Falle werden, zur Geißel in euren Flanken und zu Stacheln in euren Augen, bis ihr aus diesem guten Land weggerafft werdet, das der HERR, euer Gott, euch gegeben hat. (2Mo 23,33; 4Mo 33,55; Ri 2,3; 2Kön 17,18)14Und siehe, ich gehe heute den Weg der ganzen Erde. Und ihr wisst[6] mit eurem ganzen Herzen und mit eurer ganzen Seele, dass ⟨auch⟩ nicht ein Wort hingefallen ist von all den guten Worten, die der HERR, euer Gott, über euch geredet hat: Alle sind sie eingetroffen für euch; kein einziges Wort davon ist hingefallen. (Jos 21,45; 1Kön 2,2; Hebr 9,27)15Aber es wird geschehen: Wie jedes gute Wort über euch gekommen ist, das der HERR, euer Gott, zu euch geredet hat, ebenso wird der HERR jedes böse Wort über euch kommen lassen, bis er euch aus diesem guten Land ausgerottet haben wird, das der HERR, euer Gott, euch gegeben hat. (3Mo 26,3; 3Mo 26,14; 1Kön 14,15; Hebr 6,6)16Wenn ihr den Bund des HERRN, eures Gottes, den er euch geboten hat, übertretet und hingeht und andern Göttern dient und sie anbetet[7], dann wird der Zorn des HERRN über euch entbrennen, und ihr werdet schnell weggerafft aus dem guten Land, das er euch gegeben hat. (4Mo 33,56; 5Mo 4,26; 5Mo 6,15; 5Mo 17,3; 5Mo 28,15; Ri 2,14; 1Sam 12,25; 1Kön 9,6; Jes 24,5)
1A long time had passed. The LORD had given Israel peace and rest from all their enemies around them. By that time Joshua was very old.2So he sent for all the elders, leaders, judges and officials of Israel. He said to them, ‘I’m very old.3You yourselves have seen everything the LORD your God has done. You have seen what he’s done to all these nations because of you. The LORD your God fought for you.4Remember how I’ve given you all the land of the nations that remain here. I’ve given each of your tribes a share of it. It’s the land of the nations I conquered. It’s between the River Jordan and the Mediterranean Sea in the west.5The LORD your God himself will drive those nations out of your way. He will push them out to make room for you. You will take over their land, just as the LORD your God promised you.6‘Be very strong. Be careful to obey everything written in the Book of the Law of Moses. Don’t turn away from it to the right or the left.7Don’t have anything to do with the nations that remain among you. Don’t use the names of their gods for any reason at all. Don’t give your word and make promises in their names. You must not serve them. You must not bow down to them.8You must remain true to the LORD your God, just as you have done until now.9‘The LORD has driven out great and powerful nations to make room for you. To this day no one has been able to fight against you and win.10One of you can chase a thousand away. That’s because the LORD your God fights for you, just as he promised he would.11So be very careful to love the LORD your God.12‘But suppose you turn away from him. You mix with the people who are left alive in the nations that remain among you. Later, you and they get married to each other. And you do other kinds of things with them.13Then you can be sure of what the LORD your God will do. He won’t drive out those nations to make room for you anymore. Instead, they will become traps and snares for you. They will be like whips on your backs. They will be like thorns in your eyes. All that will continue until you are destroyed. It will continue until you are removed from this good land. It’s the land the LORD your God has given you.14‘Now I’m about to die, just as everyone else on earth does. The LORD your God has kept all the good promises he gave you. Every one of them has come true. Not one has failed to come true. And you know that with all your heart and soul.15Every good thing has come to pass that the LORD your God has promised you. So you know that he can also bring against you all the evil things he has warned you about. He’ll do it until he has destroyed you. He’ll do it until he has removed you from this good land. It’s the land he has given you.16Suppose you break the covenant the LORD your God made with you. He commanded you to obey it. But suppose you go and serve other gods. And you bow down to them. Then the LORD will be very angry with you. You will quickly be destroyed. You will be removed from the good land he has given you.’
