1Und Josua versammelte alle Stämme Israels nach Sichem und berief die Ältesten Israels, seine Häupter, seine Richter und seine Aufseher[1]. Und sie traten vor Gott. (5Mo 29,9; Jos 20,7; Jos 23,2; Ri 20,26; 1Sam 10,19; 2Kön 23,1; Apg 10,33)2Und Josua sprach zu dem ganzen Volk: So spricht der HERR, der Gott Israels: Jenseits des Stroms[2] haben eure Väter vorzeiten gewohnt, ⟨und zwar⟩ Terach, der Vater Abrahams und der Vater Nahors, und sie dienten andern Göttern. (1Mo 11,27; 1Mo 31,19)3Und ich nahm euren Vater Abraham von jenseits des Stroms und ließ ihn im ganzen Land Kanaan umherziehen, und ich mehrte seine Nachkommen und gab ihm Isaak. (1Mo 12,1; 1Mo 21,2)4Und dem Isaak gab ich Jakob und Esau, und dem Esau gab ich das Gebirge Seïr, es zu besitzen. Jakob aber und seine Söhne zogen nach Ägypten hinab. (1Mo 25,24; 1Mo 36,8; 1Mo 46,1)5Und ich sandte Mose und Aaron und schlug Ägypten, so wie ich es unter ihnen getan habe; und danach führte ich euch heraus. (2Mo 6,27; 2Mo 7,1; 2Mo 12,41; Ps 105,43)6Und ich führte eure Väter aus Ägypten, und ihr kamt ans Meer. Ägypten aber jagte euren Vätern mit Wagen und mit Reitern bis ans Schilfmeer nach. (2Mo 14,1; 2Mo 14,9)7Da schrien sie zum HERRN, und er setzte Finsternis zwischen euch und die Ägypter und ließ das Meer über sie kommen, und es bedeckte sie[3]. Und eure Augen haben gesehen, was ich an Ägypten getan habe. Dann wohntet ihr eine lange Zeit in der Wüste. (2Mo 14,10; 2Mo 14,20; 2Mo 14,27; 2Mo 14,31; 5Mo 4,34; Jos 5,6)8Und ich brachte euch in das Land der Amoriter, die jenseits des Jordan wohnten, und sie kämpften gegen euch. Und ich gab sie in eure Hand, und ihr nahmt ihr Land ein, und ich rottete sie vor euch aus. (2Mo 23,23; 4Mo 21,21; Am 2,9)9Da erhob sich Balak, der Sohn des Zippor, der König von Moab, und kämpfte gegen Israel. Und er sandte hin und ließ Bileam, den Sohn des Beor, rufen, euch zu verfluchen. (4Mo 22,2)10Aber ich wollte nicht auf Bileam hören, und er musste euch segnen[4]. Und ich rettete euch aus seiner Hand. (4Mo 24,10; Mi 6,5)11Ihr habt den Jordan überschritten und seid nach Jericho gekommen. Aber die Bürger von Jericho, die Amoriter, die Perisiter, die Kanaaniter, die Hetiter, die Girgaschiter, die Hewiter und die Jebusiter kämpften gegen euch, und ich gab sie in eure Hand. (Jos 3,10; Jos 4,1; Jos 6,1; Jos 9,2)12Und ich schickte Entsetzen[5] vor euch her, und es vertrieb sie vor euch, die beiden Könige der Amoriter; ⟨es geschah⟩ nicht durch dein Schwert und nicht durch deinen Bogen. (2Mo 23,28; 4Mo 21,32; 5Mo 4,46; 5Mo 31,4; Jos 2,10; Ps 44,4; Ps 80,10; Ps 135,11)13Und ich gab euch ein Land, um das du dich nicht gemüht hattest, und Städte, die ihr nicht gebaut hattet und in denen ihr ⟨nun doch⟩ wohnt. Von Weinbergen und Ölbäumen, die ihr nicht gepflanzt habt, esst ihr. – (5Mo 6,11; 5Mo 19,1; Jos 11,13)14So fürchtet nun den HERRN und dient ihm in Aufrichtigkeit und Treue[6]! Und tut die Götter weg, denen eure Väter jenseits des Stroms und in Ägypten gedient haben, und dient dem HERRN! (1Mo 35,2; 5Mo 6,13; 1Sam 12,24; Ps 81,10; Hes 20,7; Mi 6,8; Mt 6,24)15Ist es aber übel in euren Augen, dem HERRN zu dienen, dann erwählt euch heute, wem ihr dienen wollt: entweder den Göttern, denen eure Väter gedient haben, als sie ⟨noch⟩ jenseits des Stroms waren, oder den Göttern der Amoriter, in deren Land ihr wohnt! Ich aber und mein Haus, wir wollen dem HERRN dienen! (2Mo 23,2; 1Kön 18,21; Hes 20,39)16Da antwortete das Volk und sagte: Fern von uns sei es[7], den HERRN zu verlassen, um anderen Göttern zu dienen! (Jos 22,29; Ps 119,106)17Denn der HERR, unser Gott, er ist es, der uns und unsere Väter aus dem Land Ägypten, aus dem Sklavenhaus, heraufgeführt hat und der vor unseren Augen diese großen Zeichen getan und uns behütet hat auf dem ganzen Weg, den wir gingen, und unter all den Völkern, deren Mitte wir durchzogen. (2Mo 13,3; 5Mo 7,19; 5Mo 29,2; 5Mo 32,9; 2Chr 13,10)18Und der HERR hat alle Völker und die Amoriter, die Bewohner des Landes, vor uns vertrieben. Auch wir wollen dem HERRN dienen, denn er ist unser Gott! (5Mo 10,21; Jos 23,9; Apg 7,45)19Da sagte Josua zum Volk: Ihr könnt dem HERRN nicht dienen. Denn er ist ein heiliger Gott, er ist ein eifersüchtiger Gott. Er wird euer Vergehen und eure Sünden nicht vergeben. (2Mo 20,5; 2Mo 23,21; 3Mo 11,45; Ps 99,3; Jes 2,9)20Verlasst ihr den HERRN und dient fremden Göttern[8], dann wird er sich wenden und euch Böses antun und euch vernichten, nachdem er euch Gutes getan hat. (1Sam 12,25; 1Chr 28,8; 2Chr 15,2)21Und das Volk antwortete Josua: Nein, sondern dem HERRN wollen wir dienen! (2Mo 24,3)22Da sagte Josua zum Volk: Ihr seid Zeugen gegen euch selbst, dass ihr selbst euch den HERRN erwählt habt, um ihm zu dienen. Und sie sprachen: Wir sind Zeugen! (5Mo 26,17)23So tut nun die fremden Götter[9] weg, die unter euch sind, und neigt euer Herz zum HERRN, dem Gott Israels! (1Mo 35,2; Ps 81,10)24Und das Volk sagte zu Josua: Dem HERRN, unserem Gott, wollen wir dienen, und auf seine Stimme wollen wir hören! (2Mo 19,8; 2Chr 15,14)25Und Josua schloss einen Bund für das Volk an diesem Tag und setzte ihm Ordnung und Recht in Sichem fest. (2Mo 15,25; 5Mo 29,11; 2Kön 11,17; 2Chr 15,12)26Und Josua schrieb diese Worte in das Buch des Gesetzes Gottes. Und er nahm einen großen Stein und richtete ihn dort auf unter der Terebinthe, die bei dem Heiligtum des HERRN steht. (1Mo 28,18; 1Mo 35,4; 2Mo 24,4; Ri 9,6)27Und Josua sagte zum ganzen Volk: Siehe, dieser Stein soll Zeuge gegen uns sein; denn er hat alle Worte des HERRN gehört, die er mit uns geredet hat. Und er soll Zeuge gegen euch sein, damit ihr euren Gott nicht verleugnet. (5Mo 31,19; Jos 22,28; Mt 26,72)28Und Josua entließ das Volk, jeden in sein Erbteil. (4Mo 36,7; Jos 22,6; Ri 2,6; Neh 11,20)
Josuas und Eleasars Tod – Beisetzung der Gebeine Josefs
29Und es geschah nach diesen Dingen, dass Josua, der Sohn des Nun, der Knecht des HERRN, im Alter von 110 Jahren starb. (1Mo 50,26; Ri 2,8)30Und man begrub ihn im Gebiet seines Erbteils in Timnat-Serach, das im Gebirge Ephraim ⟨liegt⟩, nördlich vom Berg Gaasch. (Jos 19,50; Ri 17,1; 2Sam 23,30)31Und Israel diente dem HERRN alle Tage Josuas und alle Tage der Ältesten, die Josua überlebten[10] und die das ganze Werk des HERRN kannten, das er für Israel getan hatte. (5Mo 11,2; Ri 2,7; 2Chr 34,33)32Und die Gebeine Josefs, die die Söhne Israel aus Ägypten heraufgebracht hatten, begruben sie in Sichem auf dem Feldstück, das Jakob von den Söhnen Hamors, des Vaters von Sichem, für hundert Kesita[11] gekauft hatte; und es wurde[12] den Söhnen Josef zum Erbteil. (1Mo 33,19; 1Mo 48,22; 1Mo 50,25; Joh 4,5; Apg 7,16)33Und Eleasar, der Sohn Aarons, starb. Und sie begruben ihn auf dem Hügel seines Sohnes Pinhas, der ihm[13] auf dem Gebirge Ephraim gegeben worden war. (2Mo 6,25; 4Mo 20,28)
1Joshua gathered all Israel’s tribes together at Shechem. He sent for the elders, leaders, judges and officials of Israel. They came and stood there in the sight of God.2Joshua spoke to all the people. He said, ‘The LORD is the God of Israel. He says, “Long ago your people lived east of the River Euphrates. They worshipped other gods there. Your people included Terah. He was the father of Abraham and Nahor.3I took your father Abraham from the land east of the Euphrates. I led him all through Canaan. I gave him many children and grandchildren. I gave him Isaac.4To Isaac I gave Jacob and Esau. I gave the hill country of Seir to Esau. But Jacob and his family went down to Egypt.5‘ “Then I sent Moses and Aaron. I made the people of Egypt suffer because of the plagues I sent on them. But I brought you out of Egypt.6When I brought your people out, they came to the Red Sea. The people of Egypt chased them with chariots and with men on horses. They chased them all the way to the sea.7But your people cried out to me for help. So I put darkness between you and the people of Egypt. I swept them into the sea. It completely covered them. Your own eyes saw what I did to them. After that, you lived in the desert for a long time.8‘ “I brought you to the land of the Amorites. They lived east of the River Jordan. They fought against you. But I handed them over to you. I destroyed them to make room for you. Then you took over their land.9Balak, the son of Zippor, prepared to fight against Israel. Balak was the king of Moab. He sent for Balaam, the son of Beor. Balak wanted Balaam to put a curse on you.10But I would not listen to Balaam’s curses. So he blessed you again and again. And I saved you from his power.11‘ “Then you went across the River Jordan. You came to Jericho. Its people fought against you. So did the Amorites, Perizzites, Canaanites, Hittites, Girgashites, Hivites and Jebusites. But I handed them over to you.12I sent hornets ahead of you. They drove your enemies out to make room for you. That included the two Amorite kings. You did not do that with your own swords and bows.13So I gave you a land you had never farmed. I gave you cities you had not built. You are now living in them. And you are eating the fruit of vineyards and olive trees you did not plant.”14‘So have respect for the LORD. Serve him. Be completely faithful to him. Throw away the gods your people worshipped east of the River Euphrates and in Egypt. Serve the LORD.15But suppose you don’t want to serve him. Then choose for yourselves now whom you will serve. You can choose the gods your people served east of the River Euphrates. Or you can serve the gods of the Amorites. After all, you are living in their land. But as for me and my family, we will serve the LORD.’16Then the people answered Joshua, ‘We would never desert the LORD! We would never serve other gods!17The LORD our God himself brought us and our parents up out of Egypt. He brought us out of that land where we were slaves. With our own eyes, we saw those great signs he did. He kept us safe on our entire journey. He kept us safe as we travelled through all the nations.18He drove them out to make room for us. That included the Amorites. They also lived in the land. We too will serve the LORD. That’s because he is our God.’19Joshua said to the people, ‘You aren’t able to serve the LORD. He is a holy God. He is a jealous God. He won’t forgive you when you disobey him. He won’t forgive you when you sin against him.20Suppose you desert the LORD. Suppose you serve the gods that people in other lands serve. If you do, he will turn against you. He will bring trouble on you. He will destroy you, even though he has been good to you.’21But the people said to Joshua, ‘No! We will serve the LORD.’22Then Joshua said, ‘You are witnesses against yourselves. You have said that you have chosen to serve the LORD.’ ‘Yes. We are witnesses,’ they replied.23‘Now then’, said Joshua, ‘throw away the statues of the gods that are among you. People from other lands serve those gods. Give yourselves completely to the LORD. He is the God of Israel.’24Then the people said to Joshua, ‘We will serve the LORD our God. We will obey him.’25On that day Joshua made a covenant for the people. There at Shechem he reminded them of its rules and laws.26He recorded these things in the Book of the Law of God. Then he got a large stone. He set it up in Shechem under the oak tree. It was near the place that had been set apart for the LORD.27‘Look!’ he said to all the people. ‘This stone will be a witness against us. It has heard all the words the LORD has spoken to us. Suppose you aren’t faithful to your God. Then the stone will be a witness against you.’28Joshua sent the people away. He sent all of them to their own shares of land.
Joshua is buried in the promised land
29Then Joshua, the servant of the LORD, died. He was the son of Nun. He was 110 years old when he died.30His people buried him at Timnath Serah on his own property. It’s north of Mount Gaash in the hill country of Ephraim.31Israel served the LORD as long as Joshua lived. They also served him as long as the elders lived. Those were the elders who lived longer than Joshua did. They had seen for themselves everything the LORD had done for Israel.32The Israelites had brought Joseph’s bones up from Egypt. They buried his bones at Shechem in the piece of land Jacob had bought. He had bought it from the sons of Hamor. He had paid 100 pieces of silver for it. Hamor was the father of Shechem. That piece of land became the share that belonged to Joseph’s children after him.33Aaron’s son Eleazar died. He was buried at Gibeah in the hill country of Ephraim. Gibeah had been given to Eleazar’s son Phinehas.
