1 Da es nun schon viele unternommen haben, einen Bericht von den Ereignissen zu verfassen, die sich unter uns zugetragen haben[1], 2 wie sie uns die überliefert haben, die von Anfang an Augenzeugen und Diener des Wortes gewesen sind, (Joh 15,27; Apg 1,21; Hebr 2,3; 1Joh 1,1) 3 hat es auch mir gut geschienen, der ich allem von Anfang an genau gefolgt bin, es dir, hochedler Theophilus, der Reihe nach zu schreiben, (Apg 1,1) 4 damit du die Zuverlässigkeit der Dinge erkennst, in denen du unterrichtet worden bist. 5 Es war in den Tagen des Herodes[2], des Königs von Judäa, ein Priester mit Namen Zacharias, aus der Abteilung des Abija; und seine Frau war aus den Töchtern Aarons und ihr Name Elisabeth. (1Chr 24,10; Neh 12,17; Mt 2,1) 6 Beide aber waren gerecht vor Gott und wandelten untadelig in allen Geboten und Satzungen des Herrn. (1Mo 7,1; 5Mo 10,12; 1Kön 15,5; Hi 1,1; Ps 119,1) 7 Und sie hatten kein Kind, weil Elisabeth unfruchtbar war; und beide waren in ihren Tagen weit vorgerückt. (1Mo 11,30; 1Mo 17,17; 1Mo 25,21; 1Mo 29,31; Ri 13,2; 1Sam 1,5) 8 Es geschah aber, als er in der Ordnung seiner Abteilung den priesterlichen Dienst vor Gott verrichtete, (1Chr 24,1) 9 traf ihn nach der Gewohnheit des Priestertums das Los, in den Tempel des Herrn zu gehen, um zu räuchern. (2Mo 30,1; 1Chr 24,5) 10 Und die ganze Menge des Volkes stand betend draußen zur Stunde des Räucherns. 11 Ihm erschien aber ein Engel des Herrn und stand zur Rechten des Räucheraltars. (Mt 1,20) 12 Und als Zacharias ⟨ihn⟩ sah, wurde er bestürzt, und Furcht kam über ihn. (Ri 6,22; Lk 2,9; Apg 10,4) 13 Der Engel aber sprach zu ihm: Fürchte dich nicht, Zacharias! Denn dein Flehen ist erhört, und Elisabeth, deine Frau, wird dir einen Sohn gebären, und du sollst seinen Namen Johannes nennen. (1Mo 17,19; Dan 10,12; Mt 3,1; Lk 1,30; Lk 1,60; Lk 3,2) 14 Und er wird dir ⟨zur⟩ Freude und ⟨zum⟩ Jubel sein, und viele werden sich über seine Geburt freuen. (Lk 1,58) 15 Denn er wird groß sein vor dem Herrn; weder Wein noch starkes Getränk wird er trinken und schon von Mutterleibe an mit Heiligem Geist erfüllt werden. (4Mo 6,3; Ri 13,4; Mt 11,11; Mt 11,18; Lk 1,32; Lk 1,41; Lk 2,25; Lk 7,28) 16 Und viele der Söhne Israel wird er zu dem Herrn, ihrem Gott, bekehren. (Mt 3,5) 17 Und er wird vor ihm hergehen in dem Geist und der Kraft des Elia, um der Väter Herzen zu bekehren zu den Kindern und Ungehorsame zur Gesinnung von Gerechten, um dem Herrn ein zugerüstetes Volk zu bereiten. (Mal 3,1; Mal 3,24; Mt 11,14; Lk 1,76; Lk 1,77; Lk 7,27) 18 Und Zacharias sprach zu dem Engel: Woran soll ich dies erkennen? Denn ich bin ein alter Mann, und meine Frau ist weit vorgerückt in ihren Tagen. (1Mo 15,8; 1Mo 17,17; Jes 38,22) 19 Und der Engel antwortete und sprach zu ihm: Ich bin Gabriel, der vor Gott steht, und ich bin gesandt worden, zu dir zu reden und dir diese gute Botschaft zu verkündigen. (Ps 103,20; Dan 8,16; Dan 9,21; Lk 1,26; Offb 8,2) 20 Und siehe, du wirst stumm sein und nicht sprechen können bis zu dem Tag, da dies geschehen wird, dafür, dass du meinen Worten nicht geglaubt hast, die sich zu ihrer Zeit erfüllen werden. 21 Und das Volk wartete auf Zacharias, und sie wunderten sich, dass er so lange im Tempel verweilte. (3Mo 9,23) 22 Als er aber herauskam, konnte er nicht zu ihnen reden, und sie erkannten, dass er im Tempel eine Erscheinung gesehen hatte. Und er winkte ihnen zu und blieb stumm. 23 Und es geschah, als die Tage seines Dienstes zu Ende waren, ging er weg in sein Haus. 24 Nach diesen Tagen aber wurde Elisabeth, seine Frau, schwanger[3] und zog sich fünf Monate zurück und sagte: 25 So hat mir der Herr getan in den Tagen, in denen er ⟨mich⟩ angesehen hat, um meine Schmach vor den Menschen wegzunehmen. (1Mo 30,23) 26 Im sechsten Monat aber wurde der Engel Gabriel von Gott in eine Stadt von Galiläa, mit Namen Nazareth, gesandt, (Mt 2,23; Lk 1,19; Lk 2,39) 27 zu einer Jungfrau, die einem Mann namens Josef, aus dem Haus Davids, verlobt war, und der Name der Jungfrau war Maria. (Mt 1,16; Lk 2,4; Lk 2,5; Lk 3,23; Lk 4,22) 28 Und er kam zu ihr hinein und sprach: Sei gegrüßt, Begnadete! Der Herr ⟨ist⟩ mit dir. (Ri 5,24; Lk 1,42) 29 Sie aber wurde bestürzt über das Wort und überlegte, was für ein Gruß dies sei. 30 Und der Engel sprach zu ihr: Fürchte dich nicht, Maria! Denn du hast Gnade bei Gott gefunden. (Lk 1,13; Lk 2,10) 31 Und siehe, du wirst schwanger werden[4] und einen Sohn gebären, und du sollst seinen Namen Jesus nennen. (Mt 1,21; Lk 2,21) 32 Dieser wird groß sein und Sohn des Höchsten genannt werden; und der Herr, Gott, wird ihm den Thron seines Vaters David geben; (Ps 2,7; Ps 132,11; Mk 5,7; Lk 1,15) 33 und er wird über das Haus Jakobs herrschen[5] in Ewigkeit[6], und seines Königtums wird kein Ende sein. (2Sam 7,12; Ps 45,7; Jes 9,6; Dan 2,44; Dan 7,14; Mi 4,7; Joh 12,34; 2Petr 1,11) 34 Maria aber sprach zu dem Engel: Wie wird dies zugehen, da ich von keinem Mann weiß? (Joh 3,9) 35 Und der Engel antwortete und sprach zu ihr: Der Heilige Geist wird über dich kommen, und Kraft des Höchsten wird dich überschatten; darum wird auch das Heilige, das geboren werden wird, Sohn Gottes genannt werden. (Jes 7,14; Mt 1,18; Mt 16,16; Lk 3,22; Lk 4,34; Lk 8,28; Lk 9,35; Joh 6,69; Joh 9,35; Apg 3,14; Hebr 1,1; Offb 2,18; Offb 3,7) 36 Und siehe, Elisabeth, deine Verwandte, auch sie erwartet einen Sohn in ihrem Alter, und dies ist der sechste Monat bei ihr, die unfruchtbar genannt war. 37 Denn kein Wort, das von Gott kommt, wird kraftlos sein. (Mt 19,26; Mk 10,27; Lk 18,27) 38 Maria aber sprach: Siehe, ⟨ich bin⟩ die Magd[7] des Herrn; es geschehe mir nach deinem Wort! Und der Engel schied von ihr. 39 Maria aber machte sich in diesen Tagen auf und ging mit Eile in das Gebirge, in eine Stadt Judas; 40 und sie kam in das Haus des Zacharias und begrüßte die Elisabeth. 41 Und es geschah, als Elisabeth den Gruß der Maria hörte, hüpfte das Kind in ihrem Leib; und Elisabeth wurde mit Heiligem Geist erfüllt (Lk 1,15) 42 und rief mit lauter Stimme und sprach: Gesegnet ⟨bist⟩ du unter den Frauen, und gesegnet ⟨ist⟩ die Frucht deines Leibes! (Lk 1,28) 43 Und woher ⟨geschieht⟩ mir dies, dass die Mutter meines Herrn zu mir kommt? 44 Denn siehe, als die Stimme deines Grußes in meine Ohren drang, hüpfte das Kind vor Freude[8] in meinem Leib. 45 Und glückselig, die geglaubt hat, denn es wird zur Erfüllung kommen, was von dem Herrn zu ihr geredet ist! 46 Und Maria sprach: Meine Seele erhebt den Herrn, 47 und mein Geist hat gejubelt über Gott, meinen Retter. (Ps 16,9; Ps 35,9; Hab 3,18) 48 Denn er hat hingeblickt auf die Niedrigkeit seiner Magd[9]; denn siehe, von nun an werden mich glückselig preisen alle Geschlechter. (1Mo 30,13; Lk 11,27) 49 Denn Großes hat der Mächtige an mir getan, und heilig ist sein Name. (1Mo 17,1; Ps 111,9; Ps 126,3) 50 Und seine Barmherzigkeit ist von Geschlecht zu Geschlecht über die, welche ihn fürchten. (Ps 103,13) 51 Er hat Macht geübt mit seinem Arm; er hat zerstreut, die in der Gesinnung ihres Herzens hochmütig sind. (2Mo 15,6; 2Sam 22,28; Ps 89,11; Dan 4,34) 52 Er hat Mächtige von Thronen hinabgestoßen und Niedrige erhöht. (Hi 5,11; Hi 12,19; Ps 107,41; Hes 21,31) 53 Hungrige hat er mit Gütern erfüllt und Reiche leer fortgeschickt. (Ps 107,9) 54 Er hat sich Israels, seines Knechtes, angenommen, um der Barmherzigkeit zu gedenken (Ps 25,6; Ps 98,3; Jes 41,8) 55 – wie er zu unseren Vätern geredet hat – gegenüber Abraham und seinen Nachkommen[10] in Ewigkeit[11]. – (1Mo 17,7; Ps 105,42; Mi 7,20; Lk 1,72) 56 Und Maria blieb ungefähr drei Monate bei ihr; und sie kehrte zu ihrem Haus zurück. 57 Für Elisabeth aber erfüllte sich die Zeit, dass sie gebären sollte, und sie gebar einen Sohn. 58 Und ihre Nachbarn und Verwandten hörten, dass der Herr seine Barmherzigkeit an ihr groß gemacht habe, und sie freuten sich mit ihr. (Lk 1,14) 59 Und es geschah am achten Tag, da kamen sie, das Kind zu beschneiden; und sie nannten es nach dem Namen seines Vaters Zacharias. (1Mo 17,12; 3Mo 12,3; Lk 2,21) 60 Und seine Mutter antwortete und sprach: Nein, sondern er soll Johannes heißen. (Lk 1,13) 61 Und sie sprachen zu ihr: Niemand ist in deiner Verwandtschaft, der diesen Namen trägt. 62 Sie winkten aber seinem Vater zu, wie er etwa wolle, dass er heißen sollte. 63 Und er forderte ein Täfelchen und schrieb darauf: Johannes ist sein Name. Und sie wunderten sich alle. (Lk 1,13) 64 Sogleich aber wurde sein Mund geöffnet und seine Zunge ⟨gelöst⟩, und er redete und lobte Gott. (Ps 51,17) 65 Und Furcht kam über alle, die um sie her wohnten; und auf dem ganzen Gebirge von Judäa wurden alle diese Dinge besprochen. (Lk 7,16) 66 Und alle, die es hörten, nahmen es zu Herzen und sprachen: Was wird wohl aus diesem Kind werden? Denn auch des Herrn Hand war mit ihm. (Lk 2,19; Apg 11,21) 67 Und Zacharias, sein Vater, wurde mit Heiligem Geist erfüllt und weissagte und sprach: (Lk 1,15; 2Petr 1,21) 68 Gepriesen sei der Herr, der Gott Israels, dass er sein Volk angesehen und ⟨ihm⟩ Erlösung geschaffen hat. (Ps 72,18; Ps 111,9) 69 Er hat uns ein Horn des Heils[12] aufgerichtet im Hause Davids, seines Knechtes, (1Sam 2,10; Ps 18,3; Ps 132,17; Lk 2,30; Lk 3,6) 70 wie er geredet hat durch den Mund seiner heiligen Propheten von Ewigkeit[13] her: (Jer 23,5; Röm 1,2) 71 Rettung von unseren Feinden und von der Hand aller, die uns hassen; (Ps 18,49; Ps 44,8; Jes 35,4; Jes 49,25; Jer 30,10; Zef 3,15) 72 um Barmherzigkeit zu üben an unseren Vätern und seines heiligen Bundes zu gedenken, (3Mo 26,42; Ps 105,8; Hes 16,60; Lk 1,55; Gal 3,17) 73 des Eides, den er Abraham, unserem Vater, geschworen hat; ⟨und⟩ uns zu geben, (1Mo 22,16; Mi 7,20; Hebr 6,17) 74 dass wir, gerettet aus der Hand unserer Feinde, ohne Furcht ihm dienen sollen (Zef 3,16) 75 in Heiligkeit und Gerechtigkeit vor ihm alle unsere Tage. (Eph 4,24; Tit 2,12) 76 Und du, Kind, wirst ein Prophet des Höchsten genannt werden; denn du wirst vor dem Angesicht des Herrn hergehen, seine Wege zu bereiten, (Mt 11,9; Lk 1,17; Lk 3,4; Lk 20,6) 77 um seinem Volk Erkenntnis des Heils[14] zu geben in Vergebung ihrer Sünden, (Jer 31,34; Lk 3,3) 78 durch die herzliche Barmherzigkeit[15] unseres Gottes, mit der uns der Aufgang aus der Höhe besuchen wird, (Jes 60,1; Jes 63,7; Mal 3,20) 79 um denen zu leuchten, die in Finsternis und Todesschatten sitzen, und unsere Füße zu richten auf den Weg des Friedens. – (Ps 107,10; Jes 42,7; Jes 59,8; Mt 4,16; Lk 2,32; Eph 5,14) 80 Das Kind aber wuchs und erstarkte im Geist und war in der Einöde[16] bis zum Tag seines Auftretens vor Israel. 1 Many have undertaken to draw up an account of the things that have been fulfilled[1] among us, 2 just as they were handed down to us by those who from the first were eyewitnesses and servants of the word. 3 With this in mind, since I myself have carefully investigated everything from the beginning, I too decided to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus, 4 so that you may know the certainty of the things you have been taught. 5 In the time of Herod king of Judea there was a priest named Zechariah, who belonged to the priestly division of Abijah; his wife Elizabeth was also a descendant of Aaron. 6 Both of them were righteous in the sight of God, observing all the Lord’s commands and decrees blamelessly. 7 But they were childless because Elizabeth was not able to conceive, and they were both very old. 8 Once when Zechariah’s division was on duty and he was serving as priest before God, 9 he was chosen by lot, according to the custom of the priesthood, to go into the temple of the Lord and burn incense. 10 And when the time for the burning of incense came, all the assembled worshippers were praying outside. 11 Then an angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing at the right side of the altar of incense. 12 When Zechariah saw him, he was startled and was gripped with fear. 13 But the angel said to him: ‘Do not be afraid, Zechariah; your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you are to call him John. 14 He will be a joy and delight to you, and many will rejoice because of his birth, 15 for he will be great in the sight of the Lord. He is never to take wine or other fermented drink, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit even before he is born. 16 He will bring back many of the people of Israel to the Lord their God. 17 And he will go on before the Lord, in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the parents to their children and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous – to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.’ 18 Zechariah asked the angel, ‘How can I be sure of this? I am an old man and my wife is well on in years.’ 19 The angel said to him, ‘I am Gabriel. I stand in the presence of God, and I have been sent to speak to you and to tell you this good news. 20 And now you will be silent and not able to speak until the day this happens, because you did not believe my words, which will come true at their appointed time.’ 21 Meanwhile, the people were waiting for Zechariah and wondering why he stayed so long in the temple. 22 When he came out, he could not speak to them. They realised he had seen a vision in the temple, for he kept making signs to them but remained unable to speak. 23 When his time of service was completed, he returned home. 24 After this his wife Elizabeth became pregnant and for five months remained in seclusion. 25 ‘The Lord has done this for me,’ she said. ‘In these days he has shown his favour and taken away my disgrace among the people.’ 26 In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, 27 to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. 28 The angel went to her and said, ‘Greetings, you who are highly favoured! The Lord is with you.’ 29 Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. 30 But the angel said to her, ‘Do not be afraid, Mary, you have found favour with God. 31 You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. 32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, 33 and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants for ever; his kingdom will never end.’ 34 ‘How will this be,’ Mary asked the angel, ‘since I am a virgin?’ 35 The angel answered, ‘The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called[2] the Son of God. 36 Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be unable to conceive is in her sixth month. 37 For no word from God will ever fail.’ 38 ‘I am the Lord’s servant,’ Mary answered. ‘May your word to me be fulfilled.’ Then the angel left her. 39 At that time Mary got ready and hurried to a town in the hill country of Judea, 40 where she entered Zechariah’s home and greeted Elizabeth. 41 When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. 42 In a loud voice she exclaimed: ‘Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear! 43 But why am I so favoured, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? 44 As soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. 45 Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord would fulfil his promises to her!’ 46 And Mary said: ‘My soul glorifies the Lord 47 and my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour, 48 for he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant. From now on all generations will call me blessed, 49 for the Mighty One has done great things for me – holy is his name. 50 His mercy extends to those who fear him, from generation to generation. 51 He has performed mighty deeds with his arm; he has scattered those who are proud in their inmost thoughts. 52 He has brought down rulers from their thrones but has lifted up the humble. 53 He has filled the hungry with good things but has sent the rich away empty. 54 He has helped his servant Israel, remembering to be merciful 55 to Abraham and his descendants for ever, just as he promised our ancestors.’ 56 Mary stayed with Elizabeth for about three months and then returned home. 57 When it was time for Elizabeth to have her baby, she gave birth to a son. 58 Her neighbours and relatives heard that the Lord had shown her great mercy, and they shared her joy. 59 On the eighth day they came to circumcise the child, and they were going to name him after his father Zechariah, 60 but his mother spoke up and said, ‘No! He is to be called John.’ 61 They said to her, ‘There is no-one among your relatives who has that name.’ 62 Then they made signs to his father, to find out what he would like to name the child. 63 He asked for a writing tablet, and to everyone’s astonishment he wrote, ‘His name is John.’ 64 Immediately his mouth was opened and his tongue set free, and he began to speak, praising God. 65 All the neighbours were filled with awe, and throughout the hill country of Judea people were talking about all these things. 66 Everyone who heard this wondered about it, asking, ‘What then is this child going to be?’ For the Lord’s hand was with him. 67 His father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied: 68 ‘Praise be to the Lord, the God of Israel, because he has come to his people and redeemed them. 69 He has raised up a horn[3] of salvation for us in the house of his servant David 70 (as he said through his holy prophets of long ago), 71 salvation from our enemies and from the hand of all who hate us – 72 to show mercy to our ancestors and to remember his holy covenant, 73 the oath he swore to our father Abraham: 74 to rescue us from the hand of our enemies, and to enable us to serve him without fear 75 in holiness and righteousness before him all our days. 76 And you, my child, will be called a prophet of the Most High; for you will go on before the Lord to prepare the way for him, 77 to give his people the knowledge of salvation through the forgiveness of their sins, 78 because of the tender mercy of our God, by which the rising sun will come to us from heaven 79 to shine on those living in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the path of peace.’ 80 And the child grew and became strong in spirit[4]; and he lived in the wilderness until he appeared publicly to Israel.

1 Many people have attempted to write about the things that have taken place among us. 2 Reports of these things were handed down to us. There were people who saw these things for themselves from the beginning. They saw them and then passed the word on. 3 With this in mind, I myself have carefully looked into everything from the beginning. So I also decided to write down an orderly report of exactly what happened. I am doing this for you, most excellent Theophilus. 4 I want you to know that the things you have been taught are true. 5 Herod was king of Judea. During the time he was ruling, there was a priest named Zechariah. He belonged to a group of priests named after Abijah. His wife Elizabeth also came from the family line of Aaron. 6 Both of them did what was right in the sight of God. They obeyed all the Lord’s commands and rules faithfully. 7 But they had no children, because Elizabeth was not able to have any. And they were both very old. 8 One day Zechariah’s group was on duty. He was serving as a priest in God’s temple. 9 He happened to be chosen, in the usual way, to go into the temple of the Lord. There he was supposed to burn incense. 10 The time came for this to be done. All who had gathered to worship were praying outside. 11 Then an angel of the Lord appeared to Zechariah. The angel was standing at the right side of the incense altar. 12 When Zechariah saw him, he was amazed and terrified. 13 But the angel said to him, ‘Do not be afraid, Zechariah. Your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will have a child. It will be a boy, and you must call him John. 14 He will be a joy and delight to you. His birth will make many people very glad. 15 He will be important in the sight of the Lord. He must never drink wine or other such drinks. He will be filled with the Holy Spirit even before he is born. 16 He will bring back many of the people of Israel to the Lord their God. 17 And he will prepare the way for the Lord. He will have the same spirit and power that Elijah had. He will bring peace between parents and their children. He will teach people who don’t obey to be wise and do what is right. In this way, he will prepare a people who are ready for the Lord.’ 18 Zechariah asked the angel, ‘How can I be sure of this? I am an old man, and my wife is old too.’ 19 The angel said to him, ‘I am Gabriel. I serve God. I have been sent to speak to you and to tell you this good news. 20 And now you will have to be silent. You will not be able to speak until after John is born. That’s because you did not believe my words. They will come true at the time God has chosen.’ 21 During that time, the people were waiting for Zechariah to come out of the temple. They wondered why he stayed there so long. 22 When he came out, he could not speak to them. They realised he had seen a vision in the temple. They knew this because he kept gesturing to them. He still could not speak. 23 When his time of service was over, he returned home. 24 After that, his wife Elizabeth became pregnant. She stayed at home for five months. 25 ‘The Lord has done this for me,’ she said. ‘In these days, he has been kind to me. He has taken away my shame among the people.’ 26 In the sixth month after Elizabeth had become pregnant, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee. 27 He was sent to a virgin. The girl was engaged to a man named Joseph. He came from the family line of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. 28 The angel greeted her and said, ‘The Lord has blessed you in a special way. He is with you.’ 29 Mary was very upset because of his words. She wondered what kind of greeting this could be. 30 But the angel said to her, ‘Do not be afraid, Mary. God is very pleased with you. 31 You will become pregnant and give birth to a son. You must call him Jesus. 32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High God. The Lord God will make him a king like his father David of long ago. 33 The Son of the Most High God will rule for ever over his people. They are from the family line of Jacob. That kingdom will never end.’ 34 ‘How can this happen?’ Mary asked the angel. ‘I am a virgin.’ 35 The angel answered, ‘The Holy Spirit will come to you. The power of the Most High God will cover you. So the holy one that is born will be called the Son of God. 36 Your relative Elizabeth will have a child even though she is old. People thought she could not have children. But she has been pregnant for six months now. 37 That’s because what God says will always come true.’ 38 ‘I serve the Lord,’ Mary answered. ‘May it happen to me just as you said it would.’ Then the angel left her. 39 At that time Mary got ready and hurried to a town in Judea’s hill country. 40 There she entered Zechariah’s home and greeted Elizabeth. 41 When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby inside her jumped. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. 42 In a loud voice she called out, ‘God has blessed you more than other women. And blessed is the child you will have! 43 But why is God so kind to me? Why has the mother of my Lord come to me? 44 As soon as I heard the sound of your voice, the baby inside me jumped for joy. 45 You are a woman God has blessed. You have believed that the Lord would keep his promises to you!’ 46 Mary said, ‘My soul gives glory to the Lord. 47 My spirit delights in God my Saviour. 48 He has taken note of me even though I am not considered important. From now on all people will call me blessed. 49 The Mighty One has done great things for me. His name is holy. 50 He shows his mercy to those who have respect for him, from parent to child down through the years. 51 He has done mighty things with his powerful arm. He has scattered those who are proud in their deepest thoughts. 52 He has brought down rulers from their thrones. But he has lifted up people who are not considered important. 53 He has filled with good things those who are hungry. But he has sent away empty those who are rich. 54 He has helped the people of Israel, who serve him. He has always remembered to be kind 55 to Abraham and his children down through the years. He has done it just as he promised to our people of long ago.’ 56 Mary stayed with Elizabeth about three months. Then she returned home. 57 The time came for Elizabeth to have her baby. She gave birth to a son. 58 Her neighbours and relatives heard that the Lord had been very kind to her. They shared her joy. 59 On the eighth day, they came to have the child circumcised. They were going to name him Zechariah, like his father. 60 But his mother spoke up. ‘No!’ she said. ‘He must be called John.’ 61 They said to her, ‘No one among your relatives has that name.’ 62 Then they motioned to his father. They wanted to find out what he would like to name the child. 63 He asked for something to write on. Then he wrote, ‘His name is John.’ Everyone was amazed. 64 Right away Zechariah could speak again. Right away he praised God. 65 All his neighbours were filled with fear and wonder. Throughout Judea’s hill country, people were talking about all these things. 66 Everyone who heard this wondered about it. And because the Lord was with John, they asked, ‘What is this child going to be?’ 67 John’s father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit. He prophesied, 68 ‘Give praise to the Lord, the God of Israel! He has come to his people and purchased their freedom. 69 He has acted with great power and has saved us. He did it for those who are from the family line of his servant David. 70 Long ago holy prophets said he would do it. 71 He has saved us from our enemies. We are rescued from all who hate us. 72 He has been kind to our people of long ago. He has remembered his holy covenant. 73 He made a promise to our father Abraham. 74 He promised to save us from our enemies. Then we could serve him without fear. 75 He wants us to be holy and godly as long as we live. 76 ‘And you, my child, will be called a prophet of the Most High God. You will go ahead of the Lord to prepare the way for him. 77 You will tell his people how they can be saved. You will tell them that their sins can be forgiven. 78 All of that will happen because our God is tender and caring. His kindness will bring the rising sun to us from heaven. 79 It will shine on those living in darkness and in the shadow of death. It will guide our feet on the path of peace.’ 80 The child grew up, and his spirit became strong. He lived in the desert until he appeared openly to Israel.

And the angel departed from her. 39 And Mary arose in those days, and went into the hill country with haste, into a city of Juda; 40 And entered into the house of Zacharias, and saluted Elisabeth. 41 And it came to pass, that, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost: 42 And she spake out with a loud voice, and said, Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb. 43 And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? 44 For, lo, as soon as the voice of thy salutation sounded in mine ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy. 45 And blessed is she that believed: for there shall be a performance of those things which were told her from the Lord. 46 And Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord, 47 And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour. 48 For he hath regarded the low estate of his handmaiden: for, behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. 49 For he that is mighty hath done to me great things; and holy is his name. 50 And his mercy is on them that fear him from generation to generation. 51 He hath shewed strength with his arm; he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. 52 He hath put down the mighty from their seats, and exalted them of low degree. 53 He hath filled the hungry with good things; and the rich he hath sent empty away. 54 He hath holpen his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy; 55 As he spake to our fathers, to Abraham, and to his seed for ever. 56 And Mary abode with her about three months, and returned to her own house. 57 Now Elisabeth's full time came that she should be delivered; and she brought forth a son. 58 And her neighbours and her cousins heard how the Lord had shewed great mercy upon her; and they rejoiced with her. 59 And it came to pass, that on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child; and they called him Zacharias, after the name of his father. 60 And his mother answered and said, Not so; but he shall be called John. 61 And they said unto her, There is none of thy kindred that is called by this name. 62 And they made signs to his father, how he would have him called. 63 And he asked for a writing table, and wrote, saying, His name is John. And they marvelled all. 64 And his mouth was opened immediately, and his tongue loosed, and he spake, and praised God. 65 And fear came on all that dwelt round about them: and all these sayings were noised abroad throughout all the hill country of Judaea. 66 And all they that heard them laid them up in their hearts, saying, What manner of child shall this be! And the hand of the Lord was with him. 67 And his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Ghost, and prophesied, saying, 68 Blessed be the Lord God of Israel; for he hath visited and redeemed his people, 69 And hath raised up an horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David; 70 As he spake by the mouth of his holy prophets, which have been since the world began: 71 That we should be saved from our enemies, and from the hand of all that hate us; 72 To perform the mercy promised to our fathers, and to remember his holy covenant; 73 The oath which he sware to our father Abraham, 74 That he would grant unto us, that we being delivered out of the hand of our enemies might serve him without fear, 75 In holiness and righteousness before him, all the days of our life. 76 And thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Highest: for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways; 77 To give knowledge of salvation unto his people by the remission of their sins, 78 Through the tender mercy of our God; whereby the dayspring from on high hath visited us, 79 To give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace. 80 And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, and was in the deserts till the day of his shewing unto Israel.
