— Obnova smlouvy s Hospodinem - Izrael se svobodnou volbou v Šekemu rozhoduje pro Hospodina a odvrhuje cizí bohy.
1 Jozue shromáždil všechny izraelské kmeny do Šekemu. Svolal izraelské starší, představitele, soudce a správce, a postavili se před Bohem.2 Jozue řekl všemu lidu: „Toto praví Hospodin, Bůh Izraele: Vaši otcové, Terach, otec Abrahamův a otec Náchorův, sídlili odedávna za řekou Eufratem a sloužili jiným bohům.3 Vzal jsem vašeho otce Abrahama odtamtud za řekou a provedl jsem jej celou kenaanskou zemí. Rozmnožil jsem jeho potomstvo a dal jsem mu Izáka.4 Izákovi jsem dal Jákoba a Ezaua. Ezauovi jsem dal do vlastnictví Seírské pohoří. Jákob a jeho synové sestoupili do Egypta.5Poslal jsem Mojžíše a Árona a porazil jsem Egypt divy, které jsem učinil uprostřed nich. Potom jsem vás vyvedl.6 A když jsem vyvedl vaše otce z Egypta, přišli jste k moři. Egypťané však vaše otce pronásledovali u Rákosového moře na vozech a koních.7 I úpěli k Hospodinu a on položil mračno mezi vás a Egypťany a způsobil, že se přes ně přelilo moře a přikrylo je. Na vlastní oči jste viděli, jak jsem naložil s Egyptem. Pak jste pobývali dlouhý čas v poušti.8 Potom jsem vás uvedl do země Emorejců, kteří sídlili v Zajordání. Bojovali proti vám, ale já jsem vám je vydal do rukou. Obsadili jste jejich zemi a já jsem je před vámi vyhladil.9 Když se pozdvihl moábský král Balák, syn Sipórův, aby bojoval proti Izraeli, a poslal pro Bileáma, syna Beórova, aby vám zlořečil,10 nechtěl jsem Bileáma slyšet, opětovně vám musel žehnat. Tak jsem vás vytrhl z jeho rukou.11 Pak jste přešli Jordán a přišli jste k Jerichu. Občané Jericha, Emorejci, Perizejci, Kenaanci, Chetejci, Girgašejci, Chivejci a Jebúsejci bojovali proti vám, ale já jsem vám je vydal do rukou.12 Poslal jsem před vámi děsy a ti je před vámi zapudili, totiž dva krále emorejské; nezapudil jsi je ty svým mečem a lukem.13 Dal jsem vám zemi, na kterou jste nevynaložili žádnou námahu, města, která jste nestavěli, ale sídlíte v nich, vinice a olivoví, které jste nesázeli, a přece z nich jíte.14 Bojte se tedy Hospodina a služte mu bezvýhradně a věrně. Odstraňte božstva, kterým vaši otcové sloužili za řekou Eufratem a v Egyptě, a služte Hospodinu.15 Jestliže se vám zdá, že sloužit Hospodinu je zlé, vyvolte si dnes, komu chcete sloužit: zda božstvům, kterým sloužili vaši otcové, když byli za řekou Eufratem, nebo božstvům Emorejců, v jejichž zemi sídlíte. Já a můj dům budeme sloužit Hospodinu.“ 16 Lid odpověděl: „Jsme daleci toho, opustit Hospodina a sloužit jiným bohům!17 Naším Bohem je přece Hospodin. On nás i naše otce vyvedl z egyptské země, z domu otroctví. On činil před našimi zraky ta veliká znamení, opatroval nás na celé cestě, kterou jsme šli, i mezi kdejakým lidem, skrze nějž jsme procházeli.18 Hospodin zapudil od nás každý lid, i Emorejce sídlící v zemi. Také my budeme sloužit Hospodinu. On je náš Bůh.“ 19 Tu řekl Jozue lidu: „Nebudete moci sloužit Hospodinu, neboť on je Bůh svatý. Je to Bůh žárlivý, nepromine vám vaše nevěrnosti a hříchy.20 Jestliže opustíte Hospodina a budete sloužit cizím bohům, odvrátí se, zle s vámi naloží a skoncuje s vámi, ač vám předtím učinil mnoho dobrého.“21 Lid Jozuovi odpověděl: „Nikoli. Budeme sloužit jen Hospodinu!“22 Nato Jozue vyhlásil lidu: „Budete svědky sami proti sobě, nedodržíte-li své rozhodnutí, že budete sloužit Hospodinu.“ Odpověděli: „Ano, budeme svědky.“23 Jozue pokračoval: „Odstraňte tedy cizí božstva, která jsou mezi vámi, a přikloňte se srdcem k Hospodinu, Bohu Izraele.“24 Lid řekl Jozuovi: „Budeme sloužit Hospodinu, svému Bohu, a jeho budeme poslouchat.“ 25 I uzavřel Jozue onoho dne v Šekemu smlouvu s lidem a vydal mu nařízení a právní ustanovení.26 Tato slova zapsal Jozue do knihy Božího zákona. Pak vzal veliký kámen a postavil jej tam pod posvátným stromem, který stál při Hospodinově svatyni.27 A všemu lidu Jozue řekl: „Hle, tento kámen bude proti nám jako svědek, neboť slyšel všechna slova, která s námi Hospodin mluvil. Bude proti vám jako svědek, abyste nezapírali svého Boha.“28 Potom Jozue lid rozpustil, každého k jeho dědičnému podílu.
— Tři hroby - Jozue a Eleazar umírají. Kosti Josefovy jsou pohřbeny.
29 Po těch událostech Jozue, syn Núnův, služebník Hospodinův, zemřel ve věku sto deseti let.30 Pohřbili jej na území jeho dědičného podílu v Timnat-serachu v Efrajimském pohoří na sever od hory Gaaše.31 Izrael sloužil Hospodinu po celou dobu Jozuovu i po celou dobu starších, kteří Jozua přežili a znali celé Hospodinovo dílo, které pro Izraele vykonal. –32 Josefovy kosti, přenesené Izraelci z Egypta, pohřbili v Šekemu na dílu pole, který koupil Jákob od synů Šekemova otce Chamóra za sto kesít. Připadlo do dědictví Josefovým synům. –33 Také Eleazar, syn Áronův, zemřel a pohřbili jej v Gibeji, v městě jeho syna Pinchasa, které mu bylo dáno v pohoří Efrajimském.
1Joshua gathered all the tribes of Israel to Shechem and summoned the elders, the heads, the judges, and the officers of Israel. And they presented themselves before God. (Gn 12,1; Gn 12,6; Gn 21,2; Sk 7,2)4And to Isaac I gave Jacob and Esau. And I gave Esau the hill country of Seir to possess, but Jacob and his children went down to Egypt. They fought with you, and I gave them into your hand, and you took possession of their land, and I destroyed them before you. And he sent and invited Balaam the son of Beor to curse you, (Nu 22,5; Dt 23,4; Sd 11,25)10but I would not listen to Balaam. Indeed, he blessed you. So I delivered you out of his hand. (Nu 23,11; Nu 23,20; Nu 24,1; Nu 24,10)11And you went over the Jordan and came to Jericho, and the leaders of Jericho fought against you, and also the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Girgashites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites. And I gave them into your hand. Choose Whom You Will Serve
14“Now therefore fear the Lord and serve him in sincerity and in faithfulness. Put away the gods that your fathers served beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the Lord. (Dt 10,12; Jz 24,2; Jz 24,23; 1S 12,24)15And if it is evil in your eyes to serve the Lord, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” (Gn 18,19; Ex 23,24; Ex 23,32; Ex 34,15; Dt 13,7; Dt 29,18; Jz 24,14; Jz 24,22; Sd 6,10; 1Kr 18,21; Ez 20,39)16Then the people answered, “Far be it from us that we should forsake the Lord to serve other gods,17for it is the Lord our God who brought us and our fathers up from the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery, and who did those great signs in our sight and preserved us in all the way that we went, and among all the peoples through whom we passed.18And the Lord drove out before us all the peoples, the Amorites who lived in the land. Therefore we also will serve the Lord, for he is our God.”19But Joshua said to the people, “You are not able to serve the Lord, for he is a holy God. He is a jealous God; he will not forgive your transgressions or your sins. (Ex 20,5; Ex 23,21; Lv 19,2; 1S 6,20; Ž 99,5; Ž 99,9; Iz 5,16; Na 1,2)20If you forsake the Lord and serve foreign gods, then he will turn and do you harm and consume you, after having done you good.” (Jz 23,15; 1Pa 28,9; 2Pa 15,2; Ezd 8,22; Iz 1,28; Iz 63,10; Iz 65,11; Jr 17,13; Sk 7,42)21And the people said to Joshua, “No, but we will serve the Lord.”22Then Joshua said to the people, “You are witnesses against yourselves that you have chosen the Lord, to serve him.” And they said, “We are witnesses.” (Jz 24,15)23He said, “Then put away the foreign gods that are among you, and incline your heart to the Lord, the God of Israel.” (Jz 24,14; Sd 10,16; 1S 7,3)24And the people said to Joshua, “The Lord our God we will serve, and his voice we will obey.”25So Joshua made a covenant with the people that day, and put in place statutes and rules for them at Shechem. (Ex 15,25; 2Kr 11,17; 2Pa 23,16; Neh 9,38)26And Joshua wrote these words in the Book of the Law of God. And he took a large stone and set it up there under the terebinth that was by the sanctuary of the Lord. (Gn 28,18; Gn 35,4; Dt 31,24; Jz 4,3; Sd 9,6)27And Joshua said to all the people, “Behold, this stone shall be a witness against us, for it has heard all the words of the Lord that he spoke to us. Therefore it shall be a witness against you, lest you deal falsely with your God.” (Gn 31,48; Gn 31,52; Dt 31,19; Dt 31,21; Dt 31,26; Dt 32,1; Jz 22,27; Jz 22,34)28So Joshua sent the people away, every man to his inheritance. Joshua’s Death and Burial
29After these things Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of the Lord, died, being 110 years old. (Sd 2,7)30And they buried him in his own inheritance at Timnath-serah, which is in the hill country of Ephraim, north of the mountain of Gaash. (Jz 19,50)31Israel served the Lord all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders who outlived Joshua and had known all the work that the Lord did for Israel. (Dt 11,2; Dt 31,13; Sd 2,7)32As for the bones of Joseph, which the people of Israel brought up from Egypt, they buried them at Shechem, in the piece of land that Jacob bought from the sons of Hamor the father of Shechem for a hundred pieces of money.[3] It became an inheritance of the descendants of Joseph. (Gn 33,19; Gn 50,25; Ex 13,19)33And Eleazar the son of Aaron died, and they buried him at Gibeah, the town of Phinehas his son, which had been given him in the hill country of Ephraim.
