1Toho času povolav Jozue Rubenitských, Gáditských a polovice pokolení Manassesova,2Řekl jim: Vy jste ostříhali všeho, což přikázal vám Mojžíš, služebník Hospodinův, a poslouchali jste hlasu mého ve všem, což jsem přikázal vám.3Neopustili jste bratří svých již za dlouhý čas až do dne tohoto, ale bedlivě jste ostříhali přikázaní Hospodina Boha vašeho.4Nyní pak již odpočinutí dal Hospodin Bůh váš bratřím vašim, jakož mluvil jim; již tedy navraťte se a beřte se do stanů svých, do země vládařství svého, kteréž vám dal Mojžíš, služebník Hospodinův, před Jordánem.5Toliko hleďte pilně zachovávati a plniti přikázaní a zákon, kterýž přikázal vám Mojžíš, služebník Hospodinův, a milovati Hospodina Boha svého a choditi po všech cestách jeho, a zachovávajíce přikázaní jeho, přídržeti se ho, a sloužiti jemu celým srdcem svým a celou duší svou.6A požehnav jim Jozue, propustil je; i odešli do stanů svých.7(Polovici pak pokolení Manassesova dal byl Mojžíš dědictví v Bázan, a druhé polovici jeho dal Jozue s bratřími jejich za Jordánem k západu.) A když je propouštěl Jozue do stanů jejich, požehnal jim,8A mluvil k nim, řka: S bohatstvím velikým navracujete se do stanů svých a s dobytky velmi mnohými, s stříbrem a zlatem, s mědí a železem a rouchem velmi mnohým; rozděltež se loupeží nepřátel svých s bratřími svými.9Tedy navracujíce se, odešli synové Rubenovi a synové Gádovi a polovice pokolení Manassesova od synů Izraelských z Sílo, jenž jest v zemi Kananejské, aby šli do země Galád, do země vládařství svého, v kteréž dědictví obdrželi, vedlé řeči Hospodinovy skrze Mojžíše.10A přišedše ku pomezí při Jordánu, kteréž jest v zemi Kananejské, i vzdělali tu synové Rubenovi, a synové Gádovi, a polovice pokolení Manassesova oltář nad Jordánem, oltář veliký ku podivení.11Uslyšeli pak synové Izraelští, že praveno bylo: Aj, vystavěli synové Rubenovi a synové Gádovi, a polovice pokolení Manassesova oltář naproti zemi Kananejské, při pomezi u Jordánu, kdež přešli synové Izraelští.12Uslyševše, pravím, synové Izraelští, sešlo se všecko množství jejich do Sílo, aby táhli proti nim k boji.13I poslali synové Izraelští k synům Rubenovým a k synům Gádovým a ku polovici pokolení Manassesova do země Galád Fínesa, syna Eleazara kněze,14A deset knížat s ním, po jednom knížeti z každého domu otcovského, ze všech pokolení Izraelských. (Každý pak z nich byl přední v domě otců svých v tisících Izraele.)15Ti přišli k synům Rubenovým a k synům Gádovým a ku polovici pokolení Manassesova do země Galád, a mluvili s nimi, řkouce:16Toto praví všecko shromáždění Hospodinovo: Jaké jest to přestoupení, jímž jste přestoupili proti Bohu Izraelskému, odvrátivše se dnes, abyste nešli za Hospodinem, vzdělavše sobě oltář, abyste se protivili dnes Hospodinu?17Ještě-liž se nám malá zdá nepravost modly Fegor, od níž nejsme očištěni až do dnes, pročež byla rána v shromáždění Hospodinovu,18Že vy přes to odvracujete se dnes, abyste nešli za Hospodinem? I stane se, poněvadž vy dnes odporujete Hospodinu, že on zítra na všecko shromáždění Izraelské rozhěvá se.19Jestližeť jest nečistá země vládařství vašeho, přejděte do země vládařství Hospodinova, v níž přebývá stánek Hospodinův, a dědictví vezměte mezi námi; toliko proti Hospodinu se nepostavujte, a nebuďte odporní nám, stavějíce sobě oltář mimo oltář Hospodina Boha našeho.20Zdali Achan syn Záre nedopustil se přestoupení při věci proklaté? A přišlo rozhněvání na všecko shromáždění Izraelské, a on sám jeden zhřešiv, nezahynul pro svou nepravost sám.21I odpověděli synové Rubenovi a synové Gádovi a polovice pokolení Manassesova, a mluvili s knížaty tisíců Izraelských:22Silný Bůh Hospodin, silný Bůh Hospodin, onť ví, ano sám Izrael pozná, žeť jsme ne z zpoury a všetečnosti proti Hospodinu to učinili, jináč nezachovávejž nás ani dne tohoto.23Jistě žeť jsme nestavěli sobě oltáře k tomu, abychom se odvrátiti měli a nejíti za Hospodinem, ani k obětování na něm zápalů a obětí suchých, a k obětování na něm obětí pokojných, sic jináč Hospodin sám ať to vyhledává.24Anobrž raději obávajíce se té věci, učinili jsme to, myslíce: Potom mluviti budou synové vaši synům našim, řkouce: Co vám do Hospodina Boha Izraelského?25Poněvadž meze položil Hospodin mezi námi a vámi, ó synové Rubenovi a synové Gádovi, Jordán tento, nemáte vy dílu v Hospodinu. I odvrátí synové vaši syny naše od bázně Hospodinovy.26Protož jsme řekli: Přičiňme se a vzdělejme oltář, ne pro zápaly a oběti,27Ale aby byl svědkem mezi námi a vámi, a mezi potomky našimi po nás, k vykonávání služby Hospodinu před ním zápaly našimi, a obětmi našimi a pokojnými obětmi našimi, a aby neřekli potom synové vaši synům našim: Nemáte dílu v Hospodinu.28Protož jsme řekli: Jestliže by potom mluvili nám neb potomkům našim, tedy odpovíme: Vizte podobenství oltáře Hospodinova, kterýž učinili otcové naši, ne pro zápaly ani oběti, ale aby byl na svědectví mezi námi a vámi.29Odstup to od nás, abychom odporovati měli Hospodinu, a odvraceti se dnes a nejíti za Hospodinem, stavějíce oltář k zápalům, k obětem suchým a jiným obětem, mimo oltář Hospodina Boha našeho, kterýž jest před stánkem jeho.30Uslyšev pak Fínes kněz a knížata shromáždění a přední z tisíců Izraelských, kteříž s ním byli, slova, kteráž mluvili synové Rubenovi a synové Gádovi a synové Manassesovi, líbilo se jim.31I řekl Fínes, syn Eleazara kněze, synům Rubenovým a synům Gádovým, i synům Manassesovým: Nyní jsme poznali, že u prostřed nás jest Hospodin, a že jste se nedopustili proti Hospodinu přestoupení toho, a tak vysvobodili jste syny Izraelské z ruky Hospodinovy.32Tedy navrátil se Fínes, syn Eleazara kněze, i ta knížata od synů Rubenových a od synů Gádových z země Galád do země Kananejské k synům Izraelským a oznámili jim tu věc.33I líbilo se to synům Izraelským, a dobrořečili Boha synové Izraelští, a již více nemluvili o to, aby táhli proti nim k boji a zkazili zemi, v kteréž synové Rubenovi a synové Gádovi bydlili.34Nazvali pak synové Rubenovi a synové Gádovi oltář ten Ed, řkouce: Nebo svědkem bude mezi námi, že Hospodin jest Bůh.

1 Tehdy svolal Jozue Rúbenovce, Gádovce a polovinu pokolení Manasesova2 a řekl jim: „Zachovali jste všechno, co vám přikázal Mojžíš, služebník Hospodinův. Uposlechli jste mě ve všem, co jsem vám přikázal.3 Neopustili jste své bratry po celý dlouhý čas až dodnes, ale dbali jste na to, co vám svěřil a přikázal Hospodin, váš Bůh.4 Teď dopřál Hospodin, váš Bůh, vašim bratřím odpočinutí, jak jim přislíbil. Vraťte se tedy ke svým stanům, do země svého trvalého vlastnictví, kterou vám dal Mojžíš, služebník Hospodinův, v Zajordání.5 Jen se usilovně snažte zachovávat přikázání a zákon, které vám přikázal Mojžíš, služebník Hospodinův, totiž milovat Hospodina, svého Boha, chodit po všech jeho cestách a dbát na jeho přikázání, přimknout se k němu a sloužit mu z celého srdce a z celé duše.“6Jozue jim požehnal a propustil je a oni odešli ke svým stanům. 7 Polovině kmene Manasesova dal Mojžíš území v Bášanu a druhé polovině dal Jozue území spolu s jejich bratřími na západ od Jordánu. Když je tehdy Jozue s požehnáním propouštěl k jejich stanům,8řekl jim: „S velikými poklady se navraťte ke svým stanům, s velkým množstvím dobytka, stříbrem, zlatem, mědí a železem a s velkým množstvím rouch; rozdělte si s bratřími kořist po nepřátelích.“ 9 Rúbenovci, Gádovci a polovina kmene Manasesova se vrátili od Izraelců v Šílu, jež je v kenaanské zemi, a táhli do země gileádské, do země svého trvalého vlastnictví, kterou obdrželi na rozkaz Hospodinův skrze Mojžíše.10 Když přišli ke Kruhům jordánským, které jsou ještě v zemi kenaanské, zbudovali tam Rúbenovci, Gádovci a polovina kmene Manasesova nad Jordánem oltář, veliký, nápadný oltář.11 Izraelci se doslechli, že Rúbenovci, Gádovci a polovina kmene Manasesova zbudovali oltář naproti kenaanské zemi u jordánských Kruhů, směrem k Izraelcům.12 Když to Izraelci uslyšeli, shromáždila se celá pospolitost Izraelců do Šíla, aby se proti nim vypravili do boje. 13 Izraelci vyslali k Rúbenovcům, Gádovcům a polovině kmene Manasesova do země gileádské kněze Pinchasa, syna Eleazarova,14a s ním deset předáků, po jednom předáku z každého rodu všech izraelských pokolení. Každý byl představitelem svého otcovského rodu v izraelských šicích.15 Přišli do gileádské země k Rúbenovcům, Gádovcům a k polovině kmene Manasesova a jednali s nimi:16„Toto praví celá Hospodinova pospolitost: Jakou to zpronevěrou jste se zpronevěřili Bohu Izraele, že jste se dnes odvrátili od Hospodina! Zbudovali jste si oltář, abyste se dnes vzbouřili proti Hospodinu?17Což je pro nás maličkostí nepravost spáchaná v Peóru, od níž až dodnes nejsme očištěni a kvůli níž přišla pohroma na Hospodinovu pospolitost?18 A vy se dnes odvracíte od Hospodina! Proto se stane toto: Dnes se bouříte vy proti Hospodinu a zítra se on rozlítí na celou izraelskou pospolitost.19 Jestliže země vašeho trvalého vlastnictví je nečistá, přejděte přece do země trvalého vlastnictví Hospodinova, v němž přebývá Hospodinův příbytek, a dejte si přidělit podíl mezi námi. Jen se nebuřte proti Hospodinu a nezatahujte nás do své vzpoury budováním vlastního oltáře mimo oltář Hospodina, našeho Boha.20 Což se Akán, syn Zerachův, nedopustil zpronevěry věcí propadlých klatbě? Což nedolehlo Hospodinovo rozlícení na celou izraelskou pospolitost? A to způsobil jediný člověk! Což pro svou nepravost nezahynul?“ 21 Tu odpověděli Rúbenovci, Gádovci a polovina kmene Manasesova a takto hovořili s představiteli izraelských šiků:22 „Bůh bohů Hospodin, Bůh bohů Hospodin to ví a ať to zví rovněž Izrael: Jestliže to byla vzpoura či zpronevěra vůči Hospodinu, ať nás dnešního dne nezachrání.23 Jestliže jsme si zbudovali oltář, abychom se odvrátili od Hospodina, abychom na něm obětovali oběti zápalné a přídavné nebo připravovali při něm hody oběti pokojné, ať zakročí sám Hospodin!24 Ve skutečnosti jsme tak učinili z obavy, protože jsme si řekli, že se jednou synové vaši zeptají našich: ‚Co máte společného s Hospodinem, Bohem Izraele?25 Vždyť Hospodin určil za hranici mezi námi a vámi Jordán, synové Rúbenovi a Gádovi. Nemáte podíl v Hospodinu.‘ Tak vaši synové zaviní, že se naši synové přestanou bát Hospodina.26 Proto jsme si řekli: Dejme se do díla a zbudujme si oltář, ale ne pro zápalnou oběť ani pro obětní hod,27 nýbrž aby byl svědkem mezi námi a vámi i mezi našimi pokoleními po nás, že máme právo sloužit Hospodinu před jeho tváří svými zápalnými oběťmi i hody oběti pokojné. Vaši synové nebudou moci jednou říkat našim synům: ‚Nemáte podíl v Hospodinu.‘28 Řekli jsme si: Kdyby se stalo, že by tak mluvili v budoucnu s námi a s našimi pokoleními, odpověděli bychom: Hleďte, zde je zpodobení Hospodinova oltáře; ten zřídili naši otcové ne pro zápalnou oběť ani pro obětní hod, nýbrž aby byl svědkem mezi námi a vámi.29 Jsme daleci toho vzbouřit se proti Hospodinu a odvrátit se dnes od Hospodina vybudováním oltáře pro oběti zápalné, přídavné a obětní hod mimo oltář Hospodina, našeho Boha, který je před jeho příbytkem.“ 30 Když uslyšeli kněz Pinchas a předáci pospolitosti i představitelé izraelských šiků, kteří byli s ním, co mluvili Rúbenovci, Gádovci a Manasesovci, líbilo se jim to.31 I řekl kněz Pinchas, syn Eleazarův, Rúbenovcům, Gádovcům a Manasesovcům: „Dnes jsme poznali, že je Hospodin uprostřed nás. Nezpronevěřili jste se Hospodinu. Vyprostili jste tím Izraelce z Hospodinových rukou.“32 Pak se kněz Pinchas, syn Eleazarův, s předáky vrátil od Rúbenovců a Gádovců ze země gileádské k Izraelcům do země kenaanské a podal jim zprávu.33 Izraelcům se to zalíbilo. Dobrořečili Bohu a nemluvili již o tom, že potáhnou do boje proti nim a že zničí zemi, v níž sídlí Rúbenovci s Gádovci.34 Rúbenovci a Gádovci pak oltář pojmenovali a řekli: „Je mezi námi svědkem, že Hospodin je Bůh.“
1Tehdy Jozue svolal pokolení Ruben, Gád a polovinu pokolení Manases2a řekl jim: „Dodrželi jste vše, co vám přikázal Hospodinův služebník Mojžíš. I mě jste poslechli ve všem, co jsem vám přikázal.[1]3Po celý ten dlouhý čas jste až dodnes neopustili své bratry, ale dbali jste na svou povinnost, kterou vám svěřil Hospodin, váš Bůh.4Teď, když Hospodin, váš Bůh, dal vašim bratrům odpočinutí, jak jim slíbil, vraťte se i vy domů do své vlastní země, kterou vám v Zajordání dal Hospodinův služebník Mojžíš.5Jen velmi pečlivě dodržujte přikázání a Zákon, jak vám přikázal Hospodinův služebník Mojžíš: Milujte Hospodina, svého Boha, choďte po všech jeho cestách a dodržujte jeho přikázání. Přimkněte se k němu a služte mu celým svým srdcem a celou svou duší.“[2]6Nato jim Jozue požehnal, propustil je a oni se vydali domů.7Polovině kmene Manases dal Mojžíš dědictví v Bášanu, druhé polovině pak dal Jozue dědictví s jejich bratry na západním břehu Jordánu. Když je Jozue posílal domů, požehnal jim8a řekl: „Vraťte se domů s velikým bohatstvím, s velkým množstvím dobytka, se stříbrem a zlatem, s bronzem a železem a se spoustou vzácných oděvů. Rozdělte se o kořist svých nepřátel se svými příbuznými.“9Synové Rubenovi, Gádovi a polovina kmene Manasesova se tedy vydali zpět. Odešli od synů Izraele ze Šíla v kanaánské zemi a zamířili do kraje Gileád, do své vlastní země, kterou získali podle Hospodinova rozkazu skrze Mojžíše.
Svědek na hranicích
10Ještě v kanaánské zemi, než překročili Jordán, postavili synové Rubenovi, Gádovi a polovina kmene Manasesova u jordánského Gelilotu oltář; byl tak veliký, že ho bylo vidět zdaleka.11K Izraelcům se donesla zpráva: „Hle, synové Rubenovi, Gádovi a polovina kmene Manasesova postavili oltář u jordánského Gelilotu na izraelské straně kanaánské hranice!“12Jakmile to Izraelci uslyšeli, celá izraelská obec se shromáždila v Šílu, aby proti nim vytáhli do boje.13Izraelci vyslali k synům Rubenovým a Gádovým a k polovině kmene Manasesova do gileádské země Pinchase, syna kněze Eleazara,14a s ním deset vůdců, po jednom z každého otcovského domu ze všech izraelských pokolení. Každý byl mezi izraelskými tisíci náčelníkem svého otcovského rodu.15Když přišli do gileádské země k synům Rubenovým a Gádovým a k polovině kmene Manasesova, řekli jim:16„Tak praví celá obec Hospodinova: Jak jste mohli takhle zradit Boha Izraele? Odvrátili jste se od Hospodina – postavili jste si oltář, abyste se dnes vzbouřili proti Hospodinu!17To nám nestačil ten hřích u Peoru? Dodnes jsme se od něj neočistili! Jaká rána tehdy dolehla na Hospodinovu obec![3]18A vy se dnes odvracíte od Hospodina. K čemu to povede? Vy se dnes bouříte proti Hospodinu, a on se zítra rozhněvá na celou izraelskou obec!19Jestli je vaše země nečistá, pojďte do Hospodinovy země, kde stojí Hospodinův příbytek, a přijměte dědictví mezi námi. Jen se nebuřte proti Hospodinu ani proti nám stavbou jiného oltáře, než je oltář Hospodina, našeho Boha.20Když se Achan, syn Zerachův, provinil porušením klatby, Boží hněv dopadl na celou izraelskou obec – i když byl jen jeden, nezahynul kvůli svému hříchu sám!“21Synové Rubenovi a Gádovi s polovinou kmene Manasesova na to odpověděli náčelníkům izraelských tisíců těmito slovy:22„Bůh bohů Hospodin! Bůh bohů Hospodin! On to ví a ať to ví i Izrael: Pokud šlo o vzpouru, pokud šlo o zradu na Hospodinu – pak už nám, Bože, nepomáhej!23Pokud jsme si postavili oltář, abychom se odvrátili od Hospodina nebo abychom na něm přinášeli zápalné, moučné nebo pokojné oběti, pak ať nás potrestá sám Hospodin!24Udělali jsme to jen z obavy, aby vaši synové v budoucnu neřekli našim synům: ‚Co vám je do Hospodina, Boha Izraele,25synové Rubenovi a Gádovi? Hospodin mezi nás a vás položil hranici: tento Jordán. Vy nemáte s Hospodinem co do činění!‘ A tak by vaši synové mohli naše syny odvrátit od úcty k Hospodinu.26Řekli jsme si tedy: Přičiňme se a postavme si oltář. Ne pro zápaly a oběti,27ale aby byl svědkem mezi námi a vámi i mezi našimi budoucími pokoleními, že sloužíme Hospodinu svými zápaly i pokojnými oběťmi před jeho tváří. Vaši synové tak v budoucnu nebudou moci říkat našim synům: ‚Vy nemáte s Hospodinem co do činění.‘28Řekli jsme si: Kdyby nám nebo našim potomkům něco takového v budoucnu řekli, odpovíme: ‚Pohleďte na to zpodobení Hospodinova oltáře, jež vytvořili naši otcové – ne pro zápaly a oběti, ale aby byl svědkem mezi námi a vámi.‘29Ale bouřit se proti Hospodinu? To nikdy! Neodvrátili jsme se dnes od Hospodina stavbou oltáře pro zápalné, moučné nebo pokojné oběti. Jediný takový oltář stojí před příbytkem Hospodina, našeho Boha!“30Když kněz Pinchas, vůdcové obce a s nimi náčelníci izraelských tisíců uslyšeli, co říkali synové Rubenovi, Gádovi a Manasesovi, líbilo se jim to.31Kněz Pinchas, syn Eleazarův, pak Rubenovým, Gádovým a Manasesovým synům odpověděl: „Dnes jsme poznali, že Hospodin je mezi námi. Žádnou zradu proti Hospodinu jste nespáchali. Uchovali jste syny Izraele před Hospodinovým trestem.“32Kněz Pinchas, syn Eleazarův, a vůdcové obce se pak vrátili z gileádského kraje od Rubenových a Gádových synů do kanaánské země k synům Izraele a podali jim zprávu.33Synům Izraele se to líbilo. Dobrořečili Bohu a přestali říkat, že proti synům Rubenovým a Gádovým vytáhnou do boje a zpustoší zem, ve které bydlí.34Rubenovi a Gádovi synové pak ten oltář pojmenovali Ed,[4] Svědek, neboť řekli: „Je svědkem mezi námi, že Hospodin je Bůh.“

1Damals rief Josua die Rubeniter, die Gaditer und den halben Stamm Manasse zu sich (Nu 32,20; Dt 3,18)2und sagte zu ihnen: Ihr habt alles bewahrt, was euch Mose, der Knecht des HERRN, befohlen hat; ihr habt auch mir in allem gehorcht, was ich euch befohlen habe.3Ihr habt eure Brüder während dieser langen Zeit bis heute nicht im Stich gelassen und habt darauf geachtet, das Gebot des HERRN, eures Gottes, zu befolgen.4Nun hat der HERR, euer Gott, euren Brüdern Ruhe verschafft, wie er es ihnen versprochen hatte. Kehrt also jetzt um und geht zu euren Zelten, in das Land zurück, das euch gehört und das euch Mose, der Knecht des HERRN, jenseits des Jordan gegeben hat.5Achtet aber genau darauf, das Gebot und die Weisung zu erfüllen, das euch Mose, der Knecht des HERRN, gegeben hat: den HERRN, euren Gott, zu lieben, auf allen seinen Wegen zu gehen, seine Gebote zu bewahren, euch ihm anzuschließen und ihm mit eurem ganzem Herzen und eurer ganzen Seele zu dienen.6Dann segnete sie Josua und ließ sie ziehen und sie begaben sich zu ihren Zelten.7Der einen Hälfte des Stammes Manasse hatte Mose im Baschan Land gegeben, der anderen Hälfte gab Josua bei ihren Brüdern Land auf der anderen Seite des Jordan im Westen. Als Josua auch sie wieder zu ihren Zelten ziehen ließ und sie segnete,8sagte er zu ihnen: Mit reichlichem Besitz kehrt ihr zu euren Zelten zurück, mit sehr viel Vieh, mit Silber und Gold, mit Bronze, Eisen und sehr vielen Gewändern. Teilt die Beute, die ihr euren Feinden abgenommen habt, mit euren Brüdern!9So verließen die Rubeniter, die Gaditer und der halbe Stamm Manasse die Israeliten und zogen von Schilo im Land Kanaan nach Gilead, in das Land, das ihnen gehörte und das sie auf den durch Mose ergangenen Befehl des HERRN hin in Besitz genommen hatten.10Als sie zu den Bezirken am Jordan kamen, die noch im Land Kanaan liegen, bauten die Rubeniter, die Gaditer und der halbe Stamm Manasse dort einen Altar am Jordan, einen Altar von stattlichem Aussehen.11Da erhielten die Israeliten folgende Nachricht: Schaut, die Rubeniter, die Gaditer und der halbe Stamm Manasse haben gegenüber dem Land Kanaan bei den Bezirken am Jordan jenseits des Gebiets der Israeliten den Altar gebaut.12Als die Israeliten das hörten, versammelte sich die ganze Gemeinde Israels in Schilo, um gegen sie ins Feld zu ziehen.13Die Israeliten schickten den Priester Pinhas, den Sohn Eleasars, zu den Rubenitern, den Gaditern und zum halben Stamm Manasse in Gilead.14Mit ihm gingen zehn Anführer aus jeder Familie, aus jedem Stamm Israels je ein Anführer; jeder gehörte zu den Familienoberhäuptern der Tausendschaften Israels.15Als sie zu den Rubenitern, den Gaditern und dem halben Stamm Manasse ins Land Gilead kamen, sagten sie zu ihnen:16So hat die ganze Gemeinde des HERRN gesagt: Was soll denn dieser Treubruch bedeuten, den ihr gegen den Gott Israels begeht, indem ihr euch heute vom HERRN abwendet, da ihr euch einen Altar bautet, um euch heute gegen den HERRN aufzulehnen?17Ist uns der Frevel von Pegor zu wenig? Von ihm haben wir uns bis heute noch nicht gereinigt und seinetwegen ist die Plage über die Gemeinde des HERRN gekommen. (Nu 25,1)18Ihr aber wendet euch heute vom HERRN ab. Wenn ihr euch heute gegen den HERRN auflehnt, wird sich sein Zorn morgen gegen die ganze Gemeinde Israels richten.19Falls das Land, das euch gehört, unrein ist, dann kommt herüber in das Land, das dem HERRN gehört und wo die Wohnung des HERRN steht, und siedelt euch bei uns an! Aber lehnt euch nicht gegen den HERRN auf und zieht uns nicht dadurch in euren Aufruhr hinein, dass ihr für euch selber einen Altar, neben dem Altar des HERRN, unseres Gottes, baut!20Ist nicht sein Zorn über die ganze Gemeinde Israels gekommen, als sich Achan, der Sohn Serachs, treulos an dem Gut vergriffen hatte, das dem Bann geweiht war? Und er war nur ein einzelner Mann. Musste er nicht für seinen Frevel sterben? (Jz 7,1)21Darauf antworteten die Rubeniter, die Gaditer und der halbe Stamm Manasse den Befehlshabern der Tausendschaften Israels:22Gott der Götter ist der HERR, der Gott der Götter, der HERR, er weiß es und Israel soll es wissen: Wenn das Untreue, wenn das Auflehnung gegen den HERRN war, dann rette uns heute nicht.23Ob wir uns einen Altar errichtet haben, um uns vom HERRN abzuwenden, und ob wir auf ihm Brandopfer und Speiseopfer darbringen und Heilsopfer herrichten wollten, möge der HERR selbst untersuchen.24Nein, wir haben das nur aus Sorge getan, und zwar aus folgender Überlegung: Eure Söhne könnten morgen zu unseren Söhnen sagen: Was habt ihr mit dem HERRN, dem Gott Israels, zu tun?25Als Grenze hat der HERR den Jordan zwischen uns und euch, das heißt den Rubenitern und Gaditern, gelegt. Ihr habt keinen Anteil am HERRN. So könnten eure Söhne unsere Söhne davon abhalten, den HERRN zu fürchten.26Deshalb sagten wir uns: Wir wollen einen Altar errichten, nicht für Brandopfer und nicht für Schlachtopfer;27er soll vielmehr ein Zeuge sein zwischen uns und euch und zwischen unseren Nachkommen nach uns dafür, dass wir den Dienst vor dem Angesicht des HERRN durch Brandopfer, Schlachtopfer und Heilsopfer verrichten dürfen. Dann können eure Söhne morgen nicht unseren Söhnen sagen: Ihr habt keinen Anteil am HERRN.28Wir dachten: Wenn sie morgen so zu uns und unseren Nachkommen sprechen, werden wir zu ihnen sagen: Seht euch doch die Gestalt des Altares des HERRN an, den unsere Väter errichtet haben, nicht für Brandopfer und nicht für Schlachtopfer, sondern damit er Zeuge zwischen uns und euch sei.29Es sei fern von uns, dass wir uns gegen den HERRN auflehnen und uns heute von ihm abwenden, indem wir einen zweiten Altar für Brandopfer, Speiseopfer und Schlachtopfer neben dem Altar des HERRN, unseres Gottes, errichten, der vor seiner Wohnung steht.30Als der Priester Pinhas und die Fürsten der Gemeinde, die Oberhäupter der Tausendschaften Israels, die bei ihm waren, hörten, was die Rubeniter, die Gaditer und die Manassiter sagten, waren sie damit einverstanden.31Und der Priester Pinhas, der Sohn Eleasars, sagte zu den Rubenitern, den Gaditern und den Manassitern: Jetzt wissen wir, dass der HERR mitten unter uns ist; denn ihr habt keinen solchen Treubruch gegen den HERRN begangen. Dadurch habt ihr die Israeliten vor der Hand des HERRN bewahrt.32Dann verließen der Priester Pinhas, der Sohn Eleasars, und die Fürsten die Rubeniter und Gaditer und kehrten aus dem Land Gilead ins Land Kanaan zu den Israeliten zurück. Sie berichteten ihnen alles33und die Israeliten waren damit einverstanden. Sie priesen Gott und dachten nicht mehr daran, gegen die Rubeniter und Gaditer ins Feld zu ziehen und das Land zu verwüsten, in dem sie wohnten.34Die Rubeniter und Gaditer nannten den Altar Zeuge, denn sie sagten: Er steht mitten unter uns als Zeuge dafür, dass der HERR Gott ist.
1At that time Joshua summoned the Reubenites and the Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh,2and said to them, “You have kept all that Moses the servant of the Lord commanded you and have obeyed my voice in all that I have commanded you. (Nu 32,20; Dt 3,18; Jz 1,16)3You have not forsaken your brothers these many days, down to this day, but have been careful to keep the charge of the Lord your God.4And now the Lord your God has given rest to your brothers, as he promised them. Therefore turn and go to your tents in the land where your possession lies, which Moses the servant of the Lord gave you on the other side of the Jordan. The Eastern Tribes’ Altar of Witness
10And when they came to the region of the Jordan that is in the land of Canaan, the people of Reuben and the people of Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh built there an altar by the Jordan, an altar of imposing size.11And the people of Israel heard it said, “Behold, the people of Reuben and the people of Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh have built the altar at the frontier of the land of Canaan, in the region about the Jordan, on the side that belongs to the people of Israel.” (Dt 13,12)12And when the people of Israel heard of it, the whole assembly of the people of Israel gathered at Shiloh to make war against them. (Sd 20,1)13Then the people of Israel sent to the people of Reuben and the people of Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh, in the land of Gilead, Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest, (Ex 6,25; Nu 25,7; Sd 20,28)14and with him ten chiefs, one from each of the tribal families of Israel, every one of them the head of a family among the clans of Israel. Or if we did so to offer burnt offerings or grain offerings or peace offerings on it, may the Lord himself take vengeance. (Dt 18,19; 1S 20,16)24No, but we did it from fear that in time to come your children might say to our children, ‘What have you to do with the Lord, the God of Israel? (Jz 4,6; Jz 4,21)25For the Lord has made the Jordan a boundary between us and you, you people of Reuben and people of Gad. You have no portion in the Lord.’ So your children might make our children cease to worship the Lord.26Therefore we said, ‘Let us now build an altar, not for burnt offering, nor for sacrifice,27but to be a witness between us and you, and between our generations after us, that we do perform the service of the Lord in his presence with our burnt offerings and sacrifices and peace offerings, so your children will not say to our children in time to come, “You have no portion in the Lord.”’ (Gn 31,48; Dt 12,5; Dt 12,17; Jz 22,34; Jz 24,27)28And we thought, ‘If this should be said to us or to our descendants in time to come, we should say, “Behold, the copy of the altar of the Lord, which our fathers made, not for burnt offerings, nor for sacrifice, but to be a witness between us and you.”’ (Jz 22,27)29Far be it from us that we should rebel against the Lord and turn away this day from following the Lord by building an altar for burnt offering, grain offering, or sacrifice, other than the altar of the Lord our God that stands before his tabernacle!” (Jz 22,16)30When Phinehas the priest and the chiefs of the congregation, the heads of the families of Israel who were with him, heard the words that the people of Reuben and the people of Gad and the people of Manasseh spoke, it was good in their eyes. (Jz 22,13; Jz 22,33)31And Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest said to the people of Reuben and the people of Gad and the people of Manasseh, “Today we know that the Lord is in our midst, because you have not committed this breach of faith against the Lord. Now you have delivered the people of Israel from the hand of the Lord.” (Lv 26,11)32Then Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest, and the chiefs, returned from the people of Reuben and the people of Gad in the land of Gilead to the land of Canaan, to the people of Israel, and brought back word to them. And the people of Israel blessed God and spoke no more of making war against them to destroy the land where the people of Reuben and the people of Gad were settled.
