1 Zavolejž tedy, dá-liť kdo odpověd? A k kterému se z svatých obrátíš? 2 Pakli k bláznu, zahubí ho rozhněvání, a nesmyslného zabije prchlivost. 3 Jáť jsem viděl blázna, an se vkořenil, ale hned jsem zle tušil příbytku jeho, řka: 4 Vzdáleniť jsou synové jeho od spasení; nebo potříni budou v bráně, aniž bude, kdo by je vytrhl. 5 Obilé jeho zžíře hladovitý, a i z prostřed trní je vychvátí; nadto sehltí násilník statek takových. 6 Neboť nepochází z prachu trápení, aniž se z země pučí bída. 7 Ale člověk rodí se k bídě, tak jako jiskry z uhlí zhůru létají. 8 Jistě žeť bych já hledal Boha silného, a jemu bych předložil při svou, 9 Kterýž činí věci veliké, nezpytatelné, divné, a jimž počtu není, 10 Kterýž dává déšť na zemi, a spouští vody na pole, 11 Kterýž sází opovržené na místě vysokém, a žalostící vyvyšuje spasením, 12 Kterýž v nic obrací myšlení chytráků, tak aby nemohli k skutku přivésti ruce jejich ničeho, 13 Kterýž lapá moudré v chytrosti jejich; nebo rada převrácených bláznová bývá. 14 Ve dne motají se jako ve tmách, a jako v noci šámají o poledni. 15 Kterýž zachovává od meče a od úst jejich, a chudého od ruky násilníka. 16 Máť zajisté nuzný naději, ale nepravost musí zacpati ústa svá. 17 Aj, jak blahoslavený jest člověk, kteréhož tresce Bůh! A protož káráním Všemohoucího nepohrdej. 18 Onť zajisté uráží, on i obvazuje; raní, ruka jeho také léčí. 19 Z šesti úzkostí vysvobodil by tebe, ano i v sedmi nedotklo by se tebe zlé. 20 V hladu vykoupil by tě od smrti, a v boji od moci meče. 21 Když utrhá jazyk, byl bys skryt, aniž bys se bál zhouby, když by přišla. 22 Zhouba a hlad buď tobě za smích, a nestrachuj se ani líté zvěři zemské. 23 Nebo s kamením polním příměří tvé, a zvěř lítá polní pokoj zachová k tobě. 24 A shledáš, žeť stánek tvůj bude bezpečný, a navrátíš se zase k příbytku svému, a nezhřešíš. 25 Shledáš také, žeť se rozmnoží símě tvé, a potomci tvoji jako bylina zemská. 26 Vejdeš v šedinách do hrobu, tak jako odnášíno bývá zralé obilí časem svým. 27 Aj, toť jsme vyhledali, a takť jest; poslechniž toho, a schovej sobě to.

— Podivuhodné cesty Boží

1 Jen si volej, odpoví ti někdo? Na koho ze svatých se obrátíš? 2 Pošetilce zabíjí vztek, žárlivost usmrcuje prostoduché. 3 Viděl jsem, jak pošetilec zakořenil, vím však, že jeho příbytek propadne zatracení, 4 jeho synům záchrana se vzdálí, v bráně budou zdeptáni, nevysvobodí je nikdo. 5 Hladový sní jeho sklizeň, i z trní si ji vezme, žízniví po jeho majetku baží. 6 Ničemnost přec nevzchází z prachu, trápení neklíčí z půdy, 7 člověk je však zrozen pro trápení a jiskry, aby létaly vzhůru. 8 Spíše bych se dotazoval Boha, svoji záležitost předložil bych Bohu, 9 který dělá věci veliké a nevyzpytatelné, nesčíslné divy: 10 Dává zemi déšť, polím sesílá vláhu, 11 ponížené staví na vysoké místo, zarmoucení docházejí spásy; 12 chytrákům však hatí plány, aby jejich ruce neprovedly to, čeho jsou schopni; 13 moudré jejich chytrostí dovede lapit, takže záměr potměšilců nadobro se zvrtne: 14 ve dne s temnotou se střetávají, v pravé poledne tápou jak v noci; 15 ubožáka od meče zachraňuje, z jejich úst a z jejich pevné ruky; 16 a tak nuzný má naději, ale podlost musí zavřít ústa.

17 Věru, blaze člověku, jehož Bůh trestá; kázeň Všemocného neodmítej. 18 On působí bolest, ale též obváže rány, co rozdrtí, vyléčí svou rukou. 19 Z šesti soužení tě vysvobodí, v sedmi nezasáhne tě nic zlého, 20 vykoupí tě ze smrti v čas hladu a za války z moci meče, 21 před bičem jazyka budeš ukryt, nebudeš se bát, až přijde zhouba, 22 vysměješ se zhoubě, hladomoru; a neboj se zemské zvěře, 23 vždyť budeš mít smlouvu s kamením na poli a polní zvěř bude žít pokojně s tebou, 24 shledáš, že je pokoj ve tvém stanu, dohlédneš-li na svůj příbytek, neshledáš hříchu, 25 shledáš, že tvé potomstvo je četné, tvoji potomci že jsou jak bylina země, 26 do hrobu sestoupíš ve zralosti, jako se sváží požaté obilí ve svůj čas. 27 Hle, toto jsme vyzpytovali, tak je tomu. Poslechni a sám to poznáš.“

Ke komu z andělů se chceš obrátit? 2 Hlupáka zahubí rozhořčení, omezenec umře závistí. 3 Viděl jsem hlupáka zapustit kořeny, jeho dům ale náhle stihlo prokletí: 4 Jeho děti nepoznají žádné bezpečí, bez obhájce budou na soudu zdeptáni. 5 Jeho sklizeň mu spolkne hladový, i zprostřed trní ji uchvátí, jeho bohatství zhltnou žízniví. 6 Zlo totiž jen tak z prachu nevzchází, trápení ze země samo nepučí – 7 to přece člověk plodí trápení, tak jako jiskry vzhůru létají. 8 Já bych se raději k Bohu obrátil, jemu bych předložil svou při. 9 On koná věci veliké a tajemné, jeho zázraky jsou nesčetné. 10 Sesílá deště na zemi, potoky pouští po kraji. 11 Ponížené staví na místech vysokých, truchlícím dává bezpečí. 12 Hatí úmysly prohnaných, aby neuspěli se svou chytrostí. 13 On chytá chytráky v jejich vychytralosti, záměry zvrácených on podvrací. 14 Uprostřed dne tma je zachvátí, v poledne budou tápat jako za noci. 15 Před mečem jejich úst chudé zachrání, zachrání je z jejich mocného sevření. 16 Chudák má věru naději, že bude umlčeno násilí. 17 ‚Jak blaze je člověku, jehož kárá Bůh! Vyslechni to a pouč se!“
