5 And the people of Nineveh believed God. They called for a fast and put on sackcloth, from the greatest of them to the least of them. (2Sa 3:31; 2Ch 20:3; Mt 12:41; Lu 11:32)

New International Version

5 The Ninevites believed God. A fast was proclaimed, and all of them, from the greatest to the least, put on sackcloth.

5 The people of Nineveh believed God’s warning. So they decided not to eat any food for a while. And all of them put on the rough clothing people wear when they’re sad. That’s what everyone did, from the least important of them to the most important.

5 So the people of Nineveh believed God, and proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth, from the greatest of them even to the least of them.
