1In jenen Tagen aber erscheint Johannes der Täufer und verkündigt in der Wüste von Judäa (Ri 1,16; Ps 63,1; Lk 1,76; Joh 1,6)2und spricht: Tut Buße,[1] denn das Reich der Himmel[2] ist nahe herbeigekommen! (Dan 2,44; Mt 4,17; Mt 10,7; Lk 17,20; Joh 18,36; Apg 2,38)3Das ist der, von welchem geredet wurde durch den Propheten Jesaja, der spricht: »Die Stimme eines Rufenden [ertönt] in der Wüste: Bereitet den Weg des Herrn, macht seine Pfade eben!« (Jes 40,3; Jes 57,14; Jes 62,10; Joh 1,23)4Er aber, Johannes, hatte ein Gewand aus Kamelhaaren und einen ledernen Gürtel um seine Lenden, und seine Speise waren Heuschrecken und wilder Honig. Denn ich sage euch: Gott vermag dem Abraham aus diesen Steinen Kinder zu erwecken!10Es ist aber auch schon die Axt an die Wurzel der Bäume gelegt. Jeder Baum nun, der keine gute Frucht bringt, wird abgehauen und ins Feuer geworfen! (Mal 3,19; Mt 7,19; Lk 13,7)11Ich taufe euch mit Wasser zur Buße; der aber nach mir kommt, ist stärker als ich, sodass ich nicht würdig bin, ihm die Schuhe zu tragen; der wird euch mit Heiligem Geist und Feuer taufen. 13Da kommt Jesus aus Galiläa an den Jordan zu Johannes, um sich von ihm taufen zu lassen. (Mt 2,22; Mk 1,5; Mk 1,9; Mk 1,10; Joh 1,28; Joh 3,26)14Johannes aber wehrte ihm und sprach: Ich habe es nötig, von dir getauft zu werden, und du kommst zu mir? John the Baptist prepares the way
1In those days John the Baptist came and preached in the Desert of Judea.2He said, ‘Turn away from your sins! The kingdom of heaven has come near.’3John is the one Isaiah the prophet had spoken about. He had said, ‘A messenger is calling out in the desert, “Prepare the way for the Lord. Make straight paths for him.” ’ (Jes 40,3)4John’s clothes were made out of camel’s hair. He had a leather belt around his waist. His food was locusts and wild honey.5People went out to him from Jerusalem and all Judea. They also came from the whole area around the River Jordan.6When they confessed their sins, John baptised them in the Jordan.7John saw many Pharisees and Sadducees coming to where he was baptising. He said to them, ‘You are like a nest of poisonous snakes! Who warned you to escape the coming of God’s anger?8Live in a way that shows you have turned away from your sins.9Don’t think you can say to yourselves, “Abraham is our father.” I tell you, God can raise up children for Abraham even from these stones.10The axe is ready to cut the roots of the trees. All the trees that don’t produce good fruit will be cut down. They will be thrown into the fire.11‘I baptise you with water, calling you to turn away from your sins. But after me, someone is coming who is more powerful than I am. I’m not worthy to carry his sandals. He will baptise you with the Holy Spirit and fire.12His pitchfork is in his hand to clear the straw from his threshing-floor. He will gather his wheat into the storeroom. Jesus is baptised
13Jesus came from Galilee to the River Jordan. He wanted to be baptised by John.14But John tried to stop him. So he told Jesus, ‘I need to be baptised by you. So why do you come to me?’15Jesus replied, ‘Let it be this way for now. It is right for us to do this. It carries out God’s holy plan.’ Then John agreed.16As soon as Jesus was baptised, he came up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened. Jesus saw the Spirit of God coming down on him like a dove.17A voice from heaven said, ‘This is my Son, and I love him. I am very pleased with him.’
