(Apg 1,8; Apg 1,21; 2Petr 1,16)

I Am the True Vine

1 “I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser. (Jer 2,21; 1Kor 3,9) 2 Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit. (Mt 3,10; Mt 7,19; Mt 13,12; Mt 15,13; Joh 15,6; Röm 11,17; Röm 11,22; 2Petr 1,8) 3 Already you are clean because of the word that I have spoken to you. (Joh 13,10; Joh 15,7; Joh 17,17; Eph 5,26) 4 Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. (Joh 3,15; Joh 6,56; Joh 15,5; Phil 1,11; Kol 1,23; 1Joh 2,6) 5 I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. (Joh 15,16; Röm 6,5; Kol 1,6; Kol 1,10) 6 If anyone does not abide in me he is thrown away like a branch and withers; and the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned. (Hes 15,4; Mt 13,40; Joh 15,2) 7 If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. (Joh 8,31; Joh 14,13) 8 By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples. (Jes 61,3; Mt 5,16; Joh 15,5; 2Kor 9,13; Phil 1,11) 9 As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love. (Joh 5,20; Joh 13,34) 10 If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love. (Joh 8,55; Joh 10,18; Joh 14,15; Joh 14,23; Joh 17,4; Phil 2,8) 11 These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full. (Joh 3,29; Joh 16,24; Joh 17,13; 2Kor 2,3; 1Joh 1,4; 2Joh 1,12) 12 “This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. (Joh 13,34) 13 Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends. (Joh 10,11; Röm 5,7; Eph 5,2) 14 You are my friends if you do what I command you. (Mt 12,50; Lk 12,4; Joh 15,10) 15 No longer do I call you servants,[1] for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you. (1Mo 18,17; Joh 3,32; Joh 8,26; Joh 8,40; Joh 13,7; Joh 13,12; Joh 15,20; Joh 16,13; Joh 17,26; 1Kor 2,16; 1Kor 13,9) 16 You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you. (Joh 13,18; Joh 14,13; Joh 15,7; 2Joh 1,8) 17 These things I command you, so that you will love one another. (Joh 15,12)

The Hatred of the World

18 “If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you. (Joh 7,7; Joh 15,23; 1Joh 3,13) 19 If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. (Lk 6,26; Joh 17,14; Joh 17,16; Gal 1,4; Jak 4,4; 1Joh 4,5) 20 Remember the word that I said to you: ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you. If they kept my word, they will also keep yours. (Hes 3,7; Mt 10,24; Joh 8,51; Joh 13,16; Joh 15,15; Joh 16,33; 1Kor 4,12; 2Kor 4,9; 1Thess 2,15; 2Tim 3,12) 21 But all these things they will do to you on account of my name, because they do not know him who sent me. (Mt 10,22; Mt 24,9; Joh 16,3; Apg 3,17; Apg 5,41; 1Petr 4,14; 1Petr 4,16; Offb 2,3) 22 If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not have been guilty of sin,[2] but now they have no excuse for their sin. (Mt 11,22; Mt 11,24; Lk 12,47; Joh 9,41) 23 Whoever hates me hates my Father also. (Joh 5,23) 24 If I had not done among them the works that no one else did, they would not be guilty of sin, but now they have seen and hated both me and my Father. (Mt 9,33; Joh 3,2; Joh 7,31; Joh 9,32; Joh 10,32; Joh 10,37; Joh 14,9; Joh 15,22) 25 But the word that is written in their Law must be fulfilled: ‘They hated me without a cause.’ (Ps 35,19; Ps 69,4; Joh 10,34; Joh 12,38) 26 “But when the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, he will bear witness about me. (Joh 14,16; Joh 14,26; 1Kor 12,3; 1Joh 5,7) 27 And you also will bear witness, because you have been with me from the beginning. (Lk 1,2; Lk 24,48; Joh 19,35; Joh 21,24; Apg 1,21; Apg 4,20; 1Joh 1,2; 1Joh 2,7; 1Joh 4,14; 3Joh 1,12)

The vine and the branches

1 ‘I am the true vine. My Father is the gardener. 2 He cuts off every branch joined to me that does not bear fruit. He trims every branch that does bear fruit. Then it will bear even more fruit. 3 You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. 4 Remain joined to me, just as I also remain joined to you. No branch can bear fruit by itself. It must remain joined to the vine. In the same way, you can’t bear fruit unless you remain joined to me. 5 ‘I am the vine. You are the branches. If you remain joined to me, and I to you, you will bear a lot of fruit. You can’t do anything without me. 6 If you don’t remain joined to me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and dries up. Branches like those are picked up. They are thrown into the fire and burned. 7 If you remain joined to me and my words remain in you, ask for anything you wish. And it will be done for you. 8 When you bear a lot of fruit, it brings glory to my Father. It shows that you are my disciples. 9 ‘Just as the Father has loved me, I have loved you. Now remain in my love. 10 If you obey my commands, you will remain in my love. In the same way, I have obeyed my Father’s commands and remain in his love. 11 I have told you this so that you will have the same joy that I have. I also want your joy to be complete. 12 Here is my command. Love one another, just as I have loved you. 13 No one has greater love than the one who gives their life for their friends. 14 You are my friends if you do what I command. 15 I do not call you slaves anymore. Slaves do not know their master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends. I have told you everything I learned from my Father. 16 You did not choose me. Instead, I chose you. I appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit that will last. I also appointed you so that the Father will give you what you ask for. He will give you whatever you ask for in my name. 17 Here is my command. Love one another.

The world hates the disciples

18 ‘My disciples, does the world hate you? Remember that it hated me first. 19 If you belonged to the world, it would love you like one of its own. But you do not belong to the world. I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you. 20 Remember what I told you. I said, “A slave is not more important than his master.” If people hated me and tried to hurt me, they will do the same to you. If they obeyed my teaching, they will obey yours also. (Joh 13,16) 21 They will treat you like that because of my name. They do not know the one who sent me. 22 If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not be guilty of sin. But now they have no excuse for their sin. 23 Whoever hates me hates my Father also. 24 I did works among them that no one else did. If I hadn’t, they would not be guilty of sin. But now they have seen those works. And still they have hated both me and my Father. 25 This has happened so that what is written in their Law would come true. It says, “They hated me without any reason.”

The work of the Holy Spirit

26 ‘I will send the Friend to you from the Father. He is the Spirit of truth, who comes out from the Father. When the Friend comes to help you, he will be a witness about me. 27 You must also be witnesses about me. That’s because you have been with me from the beginning.
