La missione dei dodici apostoli

1 Un giorno Gesù riunì i suoi dodici apostoli, e diede loro autorità su tutti i demòni (potere di cacciarli) e la capacità di guarire tutte le malattie. 2 Poi li mandò in giro ad annunciare a tutti lʼarrivo del Regno di Dio ed a guarire i malati. 3 «Non prendete con voi neppure un bastone», furono le istruzioni di Gesù, «né bisaccia, né cibo e nemmeno denaro. Non prendete abiti di ricambio. 4 E siate ospiti in una sola casa per ogni villaggio. 5 Se, quando vi presentate in una città, la gente non vi ascolta, voltate le spalle e andatevene. Dimostrerete poi lʼira di Dio contro quella gente, scuotendovi la polvere dai piedi, mentre ve ne andate». 6 Così gli apostoli cominciarono il loro giro per i villaggi, predicando il Vangelo e guarendo i malati. 7 Quando il re Erode venne a sapere dei miracoli di Gesù, cominciò a preoccuparsi e a farsi un sacco di domande, perché alcuni dicevano: «Questo è Giovanni Battista risuscitato!» 8 ed altri: «È Elia o qualche altro antico profeta risorto dai morti!» Ma Erode disse: 9 «Sono stato io a far decapitare Giovanni. Perciò, chi può mai essere questʼuomo, di cui sento dire tutte queste cose?» E cercò di vedere Gesù. 10 Tornati dal loro giro, gli apostoli riferirono a Gesù ciò che avevano fatto. Allora Gesù si allontanò con loro in incognito verso la città di Betsàida. 11 Ma la folla scoprì dove era diretto e lo seguì. Gesù li accolse tutti di buon grado, parlando loro di nuovo del Regno di Dio, e guarendo quelli che erano ammalati. 12 Nel tardo pomeriggio, i dodici discepoli si avvicinarono a Gesù e gli dissero: «Manda questa gente nei villaggi e nelle fattorie qui intorno alla ricerca di cibo e di un alloggio per la notte, perché non cʼè niente da mangiare in questo posto deserto!» 13 Ma Gesù rispose: «Pensateci voi a dar loro da mangiare!» «Ma come? Fra tutti noi abbiamo soltanto cinque pani e due pesci!» replicarono i discepoli. «O ti aspetti che andiamo noi a comprare cibo sufficiente per tutta questa gente?!» 14 Perché a quel raduno cʼerano circa cinquemila uomini. Allora Gesù ordinò ai discepoli di far sedere la gente a terra, a gruppi di circa cinquanta persone. 15 E così fecero. 16 Poi prese i cinque pani e i due pesci e, alzando gli occhi al cielo, ringraziò di quel cibo; ne fece poi tante parti che diede ai discepoli, perché le distribuissero alla folla. 17 E tutti mangiarono e si saziarono; non solo, dopo furono raccolti ben dodici ceste di avanzi! 18 Un giorno, mentre Gesù si era ritirato a pregare e i discepoli erano con lui, egli domandò loro: «Chi dice la gente che io sia?» 19 «Alcuni dicono che sei Giovanni Battista», gli risposero, «altri, invece, che sei Elia, o uno degli antichi profeti risuscitati». 20 Poi Gesù chiese loro: «E voi?… Chi pensate che io sia?» Rispose Pietro: «Tu sei Cristo, il Salvatore promesso da Dio!» 21 Allora Gesù ordinò loro severamente di non dirlo a nessuno, e aggiunse: 22 «Perché io, il Messia, devo soffrire molto. Devo essere disprezzato dai capi giudei, dagli anziani, dai capi sacerdoti e dai dottori della legge. E sarò ucciso, ma dopo tre giorni risusciterò!» 23 Poi disse a tutti loro: «Chi vuole seguirmi, deve smettere di pensare a se stesso, e deve essere pronto a portare la propria croce ogni giorno, restandomi vicino! 24 Chi perde la sua vita per amor mio la salverà, ma chi vorrà salvare la propria vita la perderà. 25 E che vantaggio cʼè se si guadagna tutto il mondo, quando ciò significa rovinare se stesso o perdere la propria vita? 26 Quando io, il Messia, verrò nella mia gloria, nella gloria di mio Padre e dei santi angeli, allora mi vergognerò di tutti quelli che ora si vergognano di me e delle mie parole. 27 Ma questa è la pura verità: alcuni di voi che sono qui presenti non moriranno finché non avranno visto il Regno di Dio».

Gesù nella sua gloria

28 Otto giorni dopo, Gesù prese Pietro, Giacomo e Giovanni e salì sulla collina a pregare. 29 Mentre stava pregando, il suo viso cominciò a risplendere e i suoi abiti divennero di un bianco abbagliante e luminoso. 30 Poi apparvero due uomini che stavano parlando con lui: erano Mosè ed Elia! 31 Il loro aspetto era splendente, glorioso. Parlavano con Gesù della sua morte a Gerusalemme, che doveva verificarsi secondo il progetto di Dio. 32 Pietro e gli altri, presi dalla sonnolenza, si erano addormentati profondamente. Svegliandosi, videro Gesù splendente e glorioso e i due uomini che parlavano con lui. 33 Mentre Mosè ed Elia stavano per andarsene, Pietro, tutto confuso e senza rendersi conto di ciò che stava dicendo, esclamò entusiasta: «Maestro, comʼè bello stare qui! Facciamo tre tende: una per te, una per Mosè ed una per Elia!» 34 Stava ancora parlando, che si formò una nube sopra di loro. I discepoli furono presi da un vero terrore, quando la nuvola li avvolse. 35 E una voce dalla nuvola disse: «Questo è mio Figlio, che io ho scelto, ascoltatelo!» 36 Quando la voce tacque, Gesù era di nuovo solo con i suoi discepoli. Essi non dissero a nessuno ciò che avevano visto, se non molto tempo dopo. 37 Il giorno dopo, mentre scendevano dalla collina, una gran folla andò incontro a Gesù. 38 Un uomo tra la gente gli gridò: «Maestro, ti prego, vieni a vedere mio figlio, è lʼunico che ho, 39 e un demonio continua a prenderlo di mira. Lo fa urlare e gli fa venire delle convulsioni tali da avere la bava alla bocca. Lo colpisce continuamente e non lo lascia quasi mai in pace. 40 Ho pregato i tuoi discepoli di cacciarlo, ma non ci riescono!» 41 «Gente testarda e senza fede!» disse Gesù, «Per quanto ancora dovrò stare con voi e sopportarvi? Portami qui tuo figlio!» 42 Mentre il ragazzo sʼavvicinava, il demonio lo scaraventò a terra con violente convulsioni. Ma Gesù ordinò al diavolo di uscire, guarì il ragazzo, poi lo rese a suo padre. 43 La gente rimase di stucco nel vedere così manifestata la potenza di Dio. Nel frattempo, mentre tutti si meravigliavano per le grandi cose che Gesù faceva, egli disse ai discepoli: 44 «Ascoltate bene e ricordate ciò che vi dico. Io, il Messia, sto per essere tradito!» 45 I discepoli però non capivano quelle parole: per loro erano un mistero, come se fossero coperte da un velo; ma non avevano il coraggio di chiedere a Gesù una spiegazione. 46 Fra i discepoli sorse poi una questione per stabilire chi di loro sarebbe stato il più grande nel Regno di Dio. 47 Ma Gesù, che conosceva i loro pensieri, prese un bambino e, tenendolo vicino, 48 disse loro: «Chi accoglie con amore un bambino come questo, accoglie me. E chi accoglie me, accoglie Dio che mi ha mandato. Il vostro amore per gli altri è la misura della vostra grandezza». 49 Giovanni, suo discepolo, gli si avvicinò, dicendo: «Maestro, abbiamo visto uno che si serviva del tuo nome per cacciare i demòni e noi glielo abbiamo vietato. Dopo tutto, non è del nostro gruppo!» Ma Gesù rispose: 50 «Non avreste dovuto farlo, perché chi non è contro di voi è con voi». 51 Poiché si avvicinava il tempo del suo ritorno in cielo, Gesù si mise risolutamente in cammino per Gerusalemme 52 e mandò avanti alcuni dei suoi per cercare alloggio in un villaggio della Samaria. 53 Ma la gente del villaggio non voleva avere a che fare con loro, perché erano diretti a Gerusalemme. 54 Quando seppero ciò che era successo, Giacomo e Giovanni dissero a Gesù: «Maestro, vuoi che ordiniamo che scenda un fuoco dal cielo che li bruci tutti?» 55 Ma Gesù, si voltò verso di loro e li rimproverò severamente. 56 Poi si diressero verso un altro villaggio. 57 Strada facendo, un tale disse a Gesù: «Ti seguirò sempre, ovunque tu vada!» 58 Ma Gesù rispose: «Ricorda, io non possiedo neppure un cuscino su cui appoggiare la testa. Le volpi hanno una tana e gli uccelli hanno un nido, ma io, il Messia, non ho casa qui in terra». 59 Unʼaltra volta Gesù invitò un uomo a diventare suo discepolo. Quello accettò, ma voleva prima seppellire suo padre. 60 Gesù rispose: «Lascia che siano quelli che sono morti spiritualmente a preoccuparsi di queste cose! Il tuo dovere invece è quello di venire ad annunciare il Regno di Dio a tutto il mondo!» 61 Un altro disse a Gesù: «Sì, Signore, verrò, ma prima lascia che vada a salutare i miei». 62 Ma Gesù gli disse: «Nessuno che ha messo mano allʼaratro e poi si volta indietro è adatto per il Regno di Dio!»

Jesus Sends Out the Twelve Apostles

Herod Is Perplexed by Jesus

Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand

Peter Confesses Jesus as the Christ

18 Now it happened that as he was praying alone, the disciples were with him. And he asked them, “Who do the crowds say that I am?” (Mat 16,13; Mar 8,27) 19 And they answered, “John the Baptist. Take Up Your Cross and Follow Jesus

The Transfiguration

Jesus Heals a Boy with an Unclean Spirit

37 On the next day, when they had come down from the mountain, a great crowd met him. Who Is the Greatest?

46 An argument arose among them as to which of them was the greatest. (Mat 18,1; Mat 20,20; Mar 9,33; Mar 10,35)

52 And he sent messengers ahead of him, who went and entered a village of the Samaritans, to make preparations for him. The Cost of Following Jesus

57 As they were going along the road, someone said to him, “I will follow you wherever you go.” (Mat 8,19; Lu 9,51) 58 And Jesus said to him, “Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.” 59 To another he said, “Follow me.” But he said, “Lord, let me first go and bury my father.” 60 And Jesus^[7] said to him, “Leave the dead to bury their own dead. But as for you, go and proclaim the kingdom of God.” (Lu 9,2; Giov 5,25) 61 Yet another said, “I will follow you, Lord, but let me first say farewell to those at my home.” (1Re 19,20) 62 Jesus said to him, “No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.” (Fili 3,13)
