O Livro

Uma nação rebelde

1 Estas são as mensagens que foram comunicadas a Isaías, filho de Amós, através das visões que teve durante os reinados de Uzias, Jotão, Acaz e Ezequias, reis de Judá. Nestas mensagens, Deus mostrou-lhe o que iria acontecer a Judá e a Jerusalém. 2 Ouçam, ó céu e Terra, prestem ouvidos, porque é o SENHOR quem fala: “Os filhos que eu criei, e dos quais tratei com tanto cuidado, voltaram-se contra mim. 3 Até os animais, como o boi ou o jumento, conhecem o dono e apreciam os cuidados que têm com eles, mas tal não acontece com o meu povo de Israel; seja o que for que eu faça por eles, não compreendem, não se interessam.” 4 Que nação pecadora que eles são! Andam carregados sob o peso da maldade e os seus pais também eram corruptos. Voltaram as costas ao SENHOR, blasfemaram do Santo de Israel; foram eles próprios quem desprezou a sua ajuda. 5 Para quê castigar-vos ainda mais, se perseveram no pecado? Porque insistis na rebeldia? De facto, toda a vossa cabeça está em chagas, o coração tomado pelo sofrimento. 6 Com efeito, da cabeça aos pés, tudo em vocês é doença, fraqueza, debilidade; estão cobertos de contusões e nódoas negras, feridas já infetadas, que nunca foram tratadas, nem ligadas com pensos. 7 A vossa terra está em ruínas, as vossas cidades arrasadas pelo fogo; estrangeiros vão destruindo e saqueando tudo quanto encontram. 8 No entanto, vocês limitam-se a olhar, deixando-se ficar abandonados, desamparados como a pobre cabana dum guarda no meio da vinha, depois da ceifa ter acabado, ou quando a colheita foi roubada e pilhada. 9 Se não fosse a misericórdia do SENHOR dos exércitos, poupando alguns de nós, teríamos sido destruídos, tal como aconteceu com as cidades de Sodoma e Gomorra! 10 Ouçam, chefes de Sodoma, a palavra do SENHOR, e vocês, povo de Gomorra, atentem para a Lei do nosso Deus! 11 Diz o SENHOR: “Estou farto dos vossos sacrifícios. Não quero mais gordura de bezerros cevados. Não quero ver mais o sangue dos vossos holocaustos, de novilhos, cordeiros e bodes. 12 Vêm à minha presença, mas quem vos convidou para entrarem nos meus átrios? 13 Não continuem a trazer-me ofertas sem sentido; o incenso é para mim abominação. Já não suporto as festas inúteis que celebram pela lua nova, aos sábados e noutras assembleias solenes, sempre repletas de iniquidade. 14 As vossas festas da lua nova e as vossas solenidades, a minha alma as aborrece; causam-me tanto nojo que já não as suporto. 15 Daqui em diante, quando orarem de mãos estendidas para o céu, não olharei nem escutarei nada. Ainda que multipliquem as orações, não as ouvirei, porque as vossas mãos são as mãos de assassinos; estão manchadas com o sangue de vítimas inocentes. 16 Oh! Lavem-se! Limpem-se! Que eu não vos veja mais praticar toda essa maldade! Acabem com a vossa má conduta! 17 Aprendam a prática do bem; aprendam a ser justos, a ajudar os oprimidos, os órfãos e as viúvas. 18 O SENHOR diz: Venham então ter comigo e conversemos! Por mais profundas que sejam as manchas do vosso pecado, eu poderei tirá-las e tornar-vos tão limpos como a neve ao cair. Ainda que essas manchas sejam vermelhas como o carmesim, poderei tornar-vos brancos como a mais branca lã! 19 Se quiserem e se me ouvirem, se me obedecerem, terão tudo o que há de melhor! 20 Mas se continuarem a voltar-me as costas e a recusar ouvir-me, serão devorados pelos vossos inimigos. Eu, o SENHOR, é quem vos diz isto.” 21 Jerusalém foi em tempos como uma esposa fiel. Agora, tornou-se como uma prostituta! Anda atrás de outros deuses! Já foi a cidade da justiça e agora tornou-se uma cidade de assassinos. 22 Foi em tempos como a prata genuína, mas tornou-se numa liga inferior, de metais sem valor! Antigamente era tão pura e presentemente não tem qualidade nenhuma, como um vinho misturado com água. 23 Os seus chefes são rebeldes, são companheiros de ladrões; todos eles se deixam subornar e são incapazes de fazer justiça pelos órfãos; nem se interessam sequer pela causa das viúvas. 24 Por isso, eis o que tem para dizer Deus, o SENHOR dos exércitos, o Poderoso de Israel: “Transbordarei a minha ira sobre vocês, que são meus inimigos! 25 Eu próprio vos fundirei num cadinho e deitarei fora a escória. 26 Depois, tornarei a dar-vos bons juízes e conselheiros sábios, semelhantes aos que costumavam ter. Então a tua cidade se chamará novamente a cidade da justiça, a cidade fiel.” 27 Os que se voltarem para o SENHOR, que praticarem a justiça e forem bons, serão redimidos. 28 Mas todos os pecadores serão totalmente destruídos, porque se recusam aproximar do SENHOR. 29 Ficarão cheios de vergonha e hão de corar, só de pensar em todos esses sacrifícios que ofereceram aos ídolos nos bosques de carvalhos sagrados. 30 Hão de perecer com um carvalho que secou ou como o jardim que deixou de ser regado. 31 Aquele que é forte desaparecerá como a palha que arde; as vossas más ações são como faíscas que pegarão fogo à palha e que ninguém poderá apagar.

The Wickedness of Judah

2 Hear, O heavens, and give ear, O earth; for the Lord has spoken: “Children^[1] have I reared and brought up, but they have rebelled against me. (Dt 4:26; Dt 32:1; Dt 32:6; Dt 32:10; Dt 32:15; Mq 1:2; Mq 6:2)

3 The ox knows its owner, and the donkey its master’s crib, but Israel does not know, my people do not understand.” (Jr 8:7) 4 Ah, sinful nation, a people laden with iniquity, offspring of evildoers, children who deal corruptly! They have forsaken the Lord, they have despised the Holy One of Israel, they are utterly estranged. (Is 5:24; Is 31:1; Ez 14:5; Mt 3:7)

5 Why will you still be struck down? Why will you continue to rebel? The whole head is sick, and the whole heart faint. (Is 9:13; Is 31:6; Jr 5:3) 6 From the sole of the foot even to the head, there is no soundness in it, but bruises and sores and raw wounds; they are not pressed out or bound up or softened with oil. (Sl 38:3; Jr 8:22) 7 Your country lies desolate; your cities are burned with fire; in your very presence foreigners devour your land; it is desolate, as overthrown by foreigners. The Unfaithful City

21 How the faithful city has become a whore,^[4] she who was full of justice! Righteousness lodged in her, but now murderers. (Ex 34:15; Jr 2:20; Jr 31:23) 22 Your silver has become dross, your best wine mixed with water. (Jr 6:30; Ez 22:18) 23 Your princes are rebels and companions of thieves. Everyone loves a bribe and runs after gifts. They do not bring justice to the fatherless, and the widow’s cause does not come to them. (Ex 23:8; Is 1:17; Jr 5:28; Mq 7:3; Zc 7:10)
