1Als Israel sich in Schittim aufhielt, begann das Volk, sich in sexueller Unmoral mit moabitischen Frauen einzulassen.2Und diese luden die Israeliten zu den Opferfesten ihres Gottes ein. Sie kamen und aßen mit ihnen und warfen sich vor ihrem Gott nieder.3So verbündete sich Israel mit dem Baal-Peor. Da flammte Jahwes Zorn gegen sein Volk auf.4Er sagte zu Mose: „Nimm alle Anführer des Volkes fest und richte sie im Licht der Sonne vor Jahwe hin, damit Jahwes glühender Zorn sich von Israel abwendet.“5Mose befahl den Richtern Israels: „Jeder töte die von seinen Leuten, die sich an den Baal-Peor gehängt haben!“6Die ganze Gemeinschaft der Israeliten hatte sich inzwischen bei Mose vor dem Offenbarungszelt versammelt und weinte. Da kam ein Israelit und brachte vor aller Augen eine Midianiterin ins Lager seiner Sippe.7Als der Priester Pinhas Ben-Eleasar, der Enkel Aarons, das sah, stand er auf und verließ die Versammlung. Er nahm einen Speer,8ging den beiden nach in den innersten Raum des Zeltes und stieß ihn dem Israeliten und der Frau durch den Bauch. Da hörte die unter den Israeliten wütende Plage auf.9An dieser Plage waren bereits 24.000 Menschen gestorben.10Jahwe sagte zu Mose:11„Der Priester Pinhas Ben-Eleasar, der Enkel des Priesters Aaron, hat meinen Grimm von den Israeliten abgewendet, weil er für mich unter ihnen geeifert hat. So habe ich die Israeliten in meinem Zorneseifer nicht völlig vernichtet.12Darum sag ihm, dass ich ihm meinen Friedensbund gewähre.13Ihm und seinen Nachkommen soll ein Bund dauerhaften Priestertums zuteilwerden, weil er für seinen Gott geeifert und Sühne für die Israeliten erwirkt hat.“14Der Israelit, der zusammen mit der Midianiterin getötet wurde, war Simri Ben-Salu, das Oberhaupt einer Sippe der Simeoniten.15Die Midianiterin war Kosbi, die Tochter Zurs, dem Oberhaupt einer midianitischen Stammesgruppe.16Jahwe sagte zu Mose:17„Greift die Midianiter an und schlagt sie!18Denn sie haben euch durch ihre List in der Sache mit dem Peor heimtückisch angegriffen und auch in der Sache mit Kosbi, der Tochter eines Oberhaupts von Midian, die am Tag der Plage wegen des Peor erschlagen wurde.“19Nach der Plage

(Joe 2,17)7When Phinehas the son of Eleazar, son of Aaron the priest, saw it, he rose and left the congregation and took a spear in his hand (2Mo 6,25; Ps 106,30)8and went after the man of Israel into the chamber and pierced both of them, the man of Israel and the woman through her belly. The Zeal of Phinehas
10And the Lord said to Moses,11“Phinehas the son of Eleazar, son of Aaron the priest, has turned back my wrath from the people of Israel, in that he was jealous with my jealousy among them, so that I did not consume the people of Israel in my jealousy. (2Mo 20,5; 5Mo 32,16; 5Mo 32,21; 1Kön 14,22; Ps 78,58; Zef 1,18; Zef 3,8; 1Kor 10,22; 2Kor 11,2)12Therefore say, ‘Behold, I give to him my covenant of peace, (Mal 2,4)13and it shall be to him and to his descendants after him the covenant of a perpetual priesthood, because he was jealous for his God and made atonement for the people of Israel.’” (2Mo 40,15; 1Chr 6,4)14The name of the slain man of Israel, who was killed with the Midianite woman, was Zimri the son of Salu, chief of a father’s house belonging to the Simeonites.15And the name of the Midianite woman who was killed was Cozbi the daughter of Zur, who was the tribal head of a father’s house in Midian. (4Mo 31,8; Jos 13,21)16And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying,17“Harass the Midianites and strike them down, (4Mo 31,2; 4Mo 31,7)18for they have harassed you with their wiles, with which they beguiled you in the matter of Peor, and in the matter of Cozbi, the daughter of the chief of Midian, their sister, who was killed on the day of the plague on account of Peor.” (4Mo 23,28; 4Mo 31,16; Offb 2,14)
