1Aconteceu que o povo começou a queixar-se das suas dificuldades aos ouvidos do SENHOR. Quando ele os ouviu, a sua ira acendeu-se, e fogo da parte do SENHOR queimou entre eles e consumiu algumas extremidades do acampamento.2Então o povo clamou a Moisés, este orou ao SENHOR, e o fogo extinguiu-se.3Por isso aquele lugar foi chamado Taberá, porque o fogo da parte do SENHOR queimou entre eles.
A Reclamação do Povo
4Um bando de estrangeiros que havia no meio deles encheu-se de gula, e até os próprios israelitas tornaram a queixar-se e diziam: “Ah, se tivéssemos carne para comer!5Nós nos lembramos dos peixes que comíamos de graça no Egito, e também dos pepinos, das melancias, dos alhos-porós, das cebolas e dos alhos.6Mas agora perdemos o apetite; nunca vemos nada, a não ser este maná!”7O maná era como semente de coentro e tinha aparência de resina.8O povo saía recolhendo o maná nas redondezas e o moía num moinho manual ou socava-o num pilão; depois cozinhava o maná e com ele fazia bolos. Tinha gosto de bolo amassado com azeite de oliva.9Quando o orvalho caía sobre o acampamento à noite, também caía o maná.10Moisés ouviu gente de todas as famílias se queixando, cada uma à entrada de sua tenda. Então acendeu-se a ira do SENHOR, e isso pareceu mal a Moisés.11E ele perguntou ao SENHOR: “Por que trouxeste este mal sobre o teu servo? Foi por não te agradares de mim, que colocaste sobre os meus ombros a responsabilidade de todo esse povo?12Por acaso fui eu quem o concebeu? Fui eu quem o deu à luz? Por que me pedes para carregá-lo nos braços, como uma ama carrega um recém-nascido, para levá-lo à terra que prometeste sob juramento aos seus antepassados?13Onde conseguirei carne para todo esse povo? Eles ficam se queixando contra mim, dizendo: ‘Dê-nos carne para comer!’14Não posso levar todo esse povo sozinho; essa responsabilidade é grande demais para mim.15Se é assim que vais me tratar, mata-me agora mesmo; se te agradas de mim, não me deixes ver a minha própria ruína”.
A Missão Dada a Setenta Autoridades do Povo
16E o SENHOR disse a Moisés: “Reúna setenta autoridades de Israel, que você sabe que são líderes e supervisores entre o povo. Leve-os à Tenda do Encontro, para que estejam ali com você.17Eu descerei e falarei com você; e tirarei do Espírito que está sobre você e o porei sobre eles. Eles o ajudarão na árdua responsabilidade de conduzir o povo, de modo que você não tenha que assumir tudo sozinho.18“Diga ao povo: Consagrem-se para amanhã, pois vocês comerão carne. O SENHOR os ouviu quando se queixaram a ele, dizendo: ‘Ah, se tivéssemos carne para comer! Estávamos melhor no Egito!’ Agora o SENHOR dará carne a vocês, e vocês a comerão.19Vocês não comerão carne apenas um dia, ou dois, ou cinco, ou dez ou vinte,20mas um mês inteiro, até que saia carne pelo nariz de vocês e vocês tenham nojo dela, porque rejeitaram o SENHOR, que está no meio de vocês, e se queixaram a ele, dizendo: ‘Por que saímos do Egito?’ ”21Disse, porém, Moisés: “Aqui estou eu no meio de seiscentos mil homens em pé, e dizes: ‘Darei a eles carne para comerem durante um mês inteiro!’22Será que haveria o suficiente para eles se todos os rebanhos fossem abatidos? Será que haveria o suficiente para eles se todos os peixes do mar fossem apanhados?”23O SENHOR respondeu a Moisés: “Estará limitado o poder do SENHOR? Agora você verá se a minha palavra se cumprirá ou não”.24Então Moisés saiu e contou ao povo o que o SENHOR tinha dito. Reuniu setenta autoridades dentre eles e as dispôs ao redor da Tenda.25O SENHOR desceu na nuvem e lhe falou e tirou do Espírito que estava sobre Moisés e o pôs sobre as setenta autoridades. Quando o Espírito veio sobre elas, profetizaram, mas depois nunca mais tornaram a fazê-lo[1].26Entretanto, dois homens, chamados Eldade e Medade, tinham ficado no acampamento. Ambos estavam na lista das autoridades, mas não tinham ido para a Tenda. O Espírito também veio sobre eles, e profetizaram no acampamento.27Então, certo jovem correu e contou a Moisés: “Eldade e Medade estão profetizando no acampamento”.28Josué, filho de Num, que desde jovem era auxiliar de Moisés, interferiu e disse: “Moisés, meu senhor, proíba-os!”29Mas Moisés respondeu: “Você está com ciúmes por mim? Quem dera todo o povo do SENHOR fosse profeta e que o SENHOR pusesse o seu Espírito sobre eles!”30Então Moisés e as autoridades de Israel voltaram para o acampamento.
O Senhor Envia Codornizes
31Depois disso, veio um vento da parte do SENHOR que trouxe codornizes do mar e as fez cair por todo o acampamento, a uma altura de noventa centímetros[2], espalhando-as em todas as direções num raio de um dia de caminhada[3].32Durante todo aquele dia e aquela noite e durante todo o dia seguinte, o povo saiu e recolheu codornizes. Ninguém recolheu menos de dez barris[4]. Então eles as estenderam para secar ao redor de todo o acampamento.33Mas, enquanto a carne ainda estava entre os seus dentes e antes que a ingerissem, a ira do SENHOR acendeu-se contra o povo, e ele o feriu com uma praga terrível.34Por isso o lugar foi chamado Quibrote-Hataavá, porque ali foram enterrados os que tinham sido dominados pela gula.35De Quibrote-Hataavá o povo partiu para Hazerote, e lá ficou.
1And the people complained in the hearing of the LORD about their misfortunes, and when the LORD heard it, his anger was kindled, and the fire of the LORD burned among them and consumed some outlying parts of the camp. (Lv 10:2; Nm 16:35; Dt 9:22; 2 Rs 1:12; Sl 78:21; Sl 106:18; Ap 13:13)2Then the people cried out to Moses, and Moses prayed to the LORD, and the fire died down. (Nm 21:7; Tg 5:16)3So the name of that place was called Taberah,[1] because the fire of the LORD burned among them. (Dt 9:22)4Now the rabble that was among them had a strong craving. And the people of Israel also wept again and said, “Oh that we had meat to eat! (Ex 12:38; Nm 14:1; Sl 78:18; Sl 106:14; 1 Co 10:6)5We remember the fish we ate in Egypt that cost nothing, the cucumbers, the melons, the leeks, the onions, and the garlic. (Ex 16:3; Nm 21:5; At 7:39)6But now our strength is dried up, and there is nothing at all but this manna to look at.”7Now the manna was like coriander seed, and its appearance like that of bdellium. (Ex 16:14; Ex 16:31)8The people went about and gathered it and ground it in handmills or beat it in mortars and boiled it in pots and made cakes of it. And the taste of it was like the taste of cakes baked with oil. (Ex 16:16; Ex 16:31)9When the dew fell upon the camp in the night, the manna fell with it. (Ex 16:13; Ex 16:14)10Moses heard the people weeping throughout their clans, everyone at the door of his tent. And the anger of the LORD blazed hotly, and Moses was displeased. (Zc 12:12)11Moses said to the LORD, “Why have you dealt ill with your servant? And why have I not found favor in your sight, that you lay the burden of all this people on me? (1 Rs 19:4; Jn 4:1; Jn 4:9)12Did I conceive all this people? Did I give them birth, that you should say to me, ‘Carry them in your bosom, as a nurse carries a nursing child,’ to the land that you swore to give their fathers? (Gn 50:24; Ex 13:5; Dt 1:31; Is 40:11; Is 49:23; 1 Ts 2:7)13Where am I to get meat to give to all this people? For they weep before me and say, ‘Give us meat, that we may eat.’ (2 Rs 7:2; Mt 15:33; Mc 8:4; Jo 6:7; Jo 6:9)14I am not able to carry all this people alone; the burden is too heavy for me. (Ex 18:18; Dt 1:9; Dt 1:12)15If you will treat me like this, kill me at once, if I find favor in your sight, that I may not see my wretchedness.”
Elders Appointed to Aid Moses
16Then the LORD said to Moses, “Gather for me seventy men of the elders of Israel, whom you know to be the elders of the people and officers over them, and bring them to the tent of meeting, and let them take their stand there with you. (Ex 24:1; Ex 24:9; Dt 1:15; Dt 16:18)17And I will come down and talk with you there. And I will take some of the Spirit that is on you and put it on them, and they shall bear the burden of the people with you, so that you may not bear it yourself alone. (Gn 11:5; Gn 18:21; Ex 18:22; Ex 19:20; Nm 11:25; Nm 12:5; 2 Rs 2:9; 2 Rs 2:15; Ne 9:20)18And say to the people, ‘Consecrate yourselves for tomorrow, and you shall eat meat, for you have wept in the hearing of the LORD, saying, “Who will give us meat to eat? For it was better for us in Egypt.” Therefore the LORD will give you meat, and you shall eat. (Ex 19:10; Nm 5:1)19You shall not eat just one day, or two days, or five days, or ten days, or twenty days,20but a whole month, until it comes out at your nostrils and becomes loathsome to you, because you have rejected the LORD who is among you and have wept before him, saying, “Why did we come out of Egypt?”’” (Nm 21:5; Sl 78:29; Sl 106:15)21But Moses said, “The people among whom I am number six hundred thousand on foot, and you have said, ‘I will give them meat, that they may eat a whole month!’ (Ex 12:37; Ex 38:26)22Shall flocks and herds be slaughtered for them, and be enough for them? Or shall all the fish of the sea be gathered together for them, and be enough for them?” (Nm 11:13)23And the LORD said to Moses, “Is the LORD’s hand shortened? Now you shall see whether my word will come true for you or not.” (Nm 23:19; Is 50:2; Is 59:1; Ez 12:25; Ez 24:14)24So Moses went out and told the people the words of the LORD. And he gathered seventy men of the elders of the people and placed them around the tent. (Nm 11:16)25Then the LORD came down in the cloud and spoke to him, and took some of the Spirit that was on him and put it on the seventy elders. And as soon as the Spirit rested on them, they prophesied. But they did not continue doing it. (Nm 11:17)26Now two men remained in the camp, one named Eldad, and the other named Medad, and the Spirit rested on them. They were among those registered, but they had not gone out to the tent, and so they prophesied in the camp. (1 Sm 20:26; Jr 36:5)27And a young man ran and told Moses, “Eldad and Medad are prophesying in the camp.”28And Joshua the son of Nun, the assistant of Moses from his youth, said, “My lord Moses, stop them.” (Ex 13:8; Ex 13:16; Ex 24:13; Nm 26:65; Mc 9:38; Lc 9:49)29But Moses said to him, “Are you jealous for my sake? Would that all the LORD’s people were prophets, that the LORD would put his Spirit on them!” (1 Co 14:5)30And Moses and the elders of Israel returned to the camp.
Quail and a Plague
31Then a wind from the LORD sprang up, and it brought quail from the sea and let them fall beside the camp, about a day’s journey on this side and a day’s journey on the other side, around the camp, and about two cubits[2] above the ground. (Ex 16:13; Sl 78:26; Sl 105:40)32And the people rose all that day and all night and all the next day, and gathered the quail. Those who gathered least gathered ten homers.[3] And they spread them out for themselves all around the camp. (Ex 16:36; Ez 45:11)33While the meat was yet between their teeth, before it was consumed, the anger of the LORD was kindled against the people, and the LORD struck down the people with a very great plague. (Nm 16:49; Sl 78:30; Sl 78:31)34Therefore the name of that place was called Kibroth-hattaavah,[4] because there they buried the people who had the craving. (Dt 9:22)35From Kibroth-hattaavah the people journeyed to Hazeroth, and they remained at Hazeroth. (Nm 12:16; Nm 33:17; Nm 33:18)
