1Vendo as multidões, Jesus subiu ao monte e se assentou. Seus discípulos aproximaram-se dele,2e ele começou a ensiná-los, dizendo:3“Bem-aventurados[1] os pobres em espírito, pois deles é o Reino dos céus.4Bem-aventurados os que choram, pois serão consolados.5Bem-aventurados os humildes, pois eles receberão a terra por herança.6Bem-aventurados os que têm fome e sede de justiça, pois serão satisfeitos.7Bem-aventurados os misericordiosos, pois obterão misericórdia.8Bem-aventurados os puros de coração, pois verão a Deus.9Bem-aventurados os pacificadores, pois serão chamados filhos de Deus.10Bem-aventurados os perseguidos por causa da justiça, pois deles é o Reino dos céus.11“Bem-aventurados serão vocês quando, por minha causa, os insultarem, os perseguirem e levantarem todo tipo de calúnia contra vocês.12Alegrem-se e regozijem-se, porque grande é a sua recompensa nos céus, pois da mesma forma perseguiram os profetas que viveram antes de vocês.
O Sal da Terra e a Luz do Mundo
13“Vocês são o sal da terra. Mas, se o sal perder o seu sabor, como restaurá-lo? Não servirá para nada, exceto para ser jogado fora e pisado pelos homens.14“Vocês são a luz do mundo. Não se pode esconder uma cidade construída sobre um monte.15E, também, ninguém acende uma candeia e a coloca debaixo de uma vasilha. Ao contrário, coloca-a no lugar apropriado, e assim ilumina a todos os que estão na casa.16Assim brilhe a luz de vocês diante dos homens, para que vejam as suas boas obras e glorifiquem ao Pai de vocês, que está nos céus.
Jesus Cumpre a Lei
17“Não pensem que vim abolir a Lei ou os Profetas; não vim abolir, mas cumprir.18Digo a verdade: Enquanto existirem céus e terra, de forma alguma desaparecerá da Lei a menor letra ou o menor traço, até que tudo se cumpra.19Todo aquele que desobedecer a um desses mandamentos, ainda que dos menores, e ensinar os outros a fazerem o mesmo, será chamado menor no Reino dos céus; mas todo aquele que praticar e ensinar estes mandamentos será chamado grande no Reino dos céus.20Pois eu digo que, se a justiça de vocês não for muito superior à dos fariseus e mestres da lei, de modo nenhum entrarão no Reino dos céus.
O Homicídio
21“Vocês ouviram o que foi dito aos seus antepassados: ‘Não matarás’, e ‘quem matar estará sujeito a julgamento’.22Mas eu digo a vocês que qualquer que se irar contra seu irmão[2] estará sujeito a julgamento. Também, qualquer que disser a seu irmão: ‘Racá[3]’, será levado ao tribunal. E qualquer que disser: ‘Louco!’, corre o risco de ir para o fogo do inferno.23“Portanto, se você estiver apresentando sua oferta diante do altar e ali se lembrar de que seu irmão tem algo contra você,24deixe sua oferta ali, diante do altar, e vá primeiro reconciliar-se com seu irmão; depois volte e apresente sua oferta.25“Entre em acordo depressa com seu adversário que pretende levá-lo ao tribunal. Faça isso enquanto ainda estiver com ele a caminho, pois, caso contrário, ele poderá entregá-lo ao juiz, e o juiz ao guarda, e você poderá ser jogado na prisão.26Eu garanto que você não sairá de lá enquanto não pagar o último centavo[4].
O Adultério
27“Vocês ouviram o que foi dito: ‘Não adulterarás’.28Mas eu digo: Qualquer que olhar para uma mulher e desejá-la, já cometeu adultério com ela no seu coração.29Se o seu olho direito o fizer pecar, arranque-o e lance-o fora. É melhor perder uma parte do seu corpo do que ser todo ele lançado no inferno.30E, se a sua mão direita o fizer pecar, corte-a e lance-a fora. É melhor perder uma parte do seu corpo do que ir todo ele para o inferno.
O Divórcio
31“Foi dito: ‘Aquele que se divorciar de sua mulher deverá dar-lhe certidão de divórcio’.32Mas eu digo que todo aquele que se divorciar de sua mulher, exceto por imoralidade sexual[5], faz que ela se torne adúltera, e quem se casar com a mulher divorciada estará cometendo adultério.
Os Juramentos
33“Vocês também ouviram o que foi dito aos seus antepassados: ‘Não jure falsamente, mas cumpra os juramentos que você fez diante do Senhor’.34Mas eu digo: Não jurem de forma alguma: nem pelos céus, porque é o trono de Deus;35nem pela terra, porque é o estrado de seus pés; nem por Jerusalém, porque é a cidade do grande Rei.36E não jure pela sua cabeça, pois você não pode tornar branco ou preto nem um fio de cabelo.37Seja o seu ‘sim’, ‘sim’, e o seu ‘não’, ‘não’; o que passar disso vem do Maligno.
A Vingança
38“Vocês ouviram o que foi dito: ‘Olho por olho e dente por dente’.39Mas eu digo: Não resistam ao perverso. Se alguém o ferir na face direita, ofereça-lhe também a outra.40E, se alguém quiser processá-lo e tirar de você a túnica, deixe que leve também a capa.41Se alguém o forçar a caminhar com ele uma milha[6], vá com ele duas.42Dê a quem pede, e não volte as costas àquele que deseja pedir algo emprestado.
O Amor aos Inimigos
43“Vocês ouviram o que foi dito: ‘Ame o seu próximo e odeie o seu inimigo’.44Mas eu digo: Amem os seus inimigos[7] e orem por aqueles que os perseguem,45para que vocês venham a ser filhos de seu Pai que está nos céus. Porque ele faz raiar o seu sol sobre maus e bons e derrama chuva sobre justos e injustos.46Se vocês amarem aqueles que os amam, que recompensa vocês receberão? Até os publicanos[8] fazem isso!47E, se saudarem apenas os seus irmãos, o que estarão fazendo de mais? Até os pagãos fazem isso!48Portanto, sejam perfeitos como perfeito é o Pai celestial de vocês.
13“You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people’s feet. (Mc 9:50; Lc 14:34)14“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. (Jo 8:12; Ef 5:8; Fp 2:15)15Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. (Mc 4:21; Lc 8:16; Lc 11:33)16In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that[2] they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven. Christ Came to Fulfill the Law
17“Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. (Mt 7:12; Rm 3:31; Rm 10:4; Rm 13:8; Gl 3:24)18For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished. (Mt 24:35; Lc 16:17)19Therefore whoever relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever does them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. Anger
21“You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder; and whoever murders will be liable to judgment.’ (Ex 20:13; Dt 5:17; Dt 16:18; Mt 5:27; Mt 5:31; Mt 5:33; Mt 5:38; Mt 5:43; Mt 19:18; Mc 10:19; Lc 18:20; Rm 13:9; Tg 2:11)22But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother[3] will be liable to judgment; whoever insults[4] his brother will be liable to the council; and whoever says, ‘You fool!’ will be liable to the hell[5] of fire. (Mt 5:21; Mt 5:29; Mt 18:9; Mc 9:43; Tg 3:6; 1 Jo 3:15)23So if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, (Mt 6:15; Mt 8:4; Mt 23:18; Mc 11:25)24leave your gift there before the altar and go. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift.25Come to terms quickly with your accuser while you are going with him to court, lest your accuser hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the guard, and you be put in prison. Lust
27“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ (Ex 20:14; Dt 5:18; Mt 5:21)28But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart. (2 Sm 11:2; Jó 31:1; Pv 6:25)29If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body be thrown into hell. (Mt 5:22; Mt 10:28; Mt 13:41; Mt 18:8; Mt 23:15; Mt 23:33; Mc 9:43; Lc 12:5; Lc 17:1)30And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body go into hell. (Mt 5:29)
Divorce
31“It was also said, ‘Whoever divorces his wife, let him give her a certificate of divorce.’ (Dt 24:1; Jr 3:1; Mt 5:27; Mt 19:7)32But I say to you that everyone who divorces his wife, except on the ground of sexual immorality, makes her commit adultery, and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery. (Mt 19:9; Mc 10:11; Lc 16:18; Rm 7:3; 1 Co 7:10)
Oaths
33“Again you have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not swear falsely, but shall perform to the Lord what you have sworn.’ (Lv 19:12; Nm 30:2; Dt 23:21; Ec 5:4; Mt 5:27; 1 Tm 1:10)34But I say to you, Do not take an oath at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God, (Is 66:1; Mt 23:22; At 7:49; Tg 5:12; Ap 4:2)35or by the earth, for it is his footstool, or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. (Sl 48:2)36And do not take an oath by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black.37Let what you say be simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything more than this comes from evil.[7] (Pv 10:19)
Retaliation
38“You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’ (Ex 21:24; Lv 24:20; Dt 19:21; Mt 5:27)39But I say to you, Do not resist the one who is evil. But if anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also. (Is 50:6; Lm 3:30; Mt 26:67; Lc 6:29; Rm 12:17; 1 Pe 2:23)40And if anyone would sue you and take your tunic,[8] let him have your cloak as well. (Mt 5:39)41And if anyone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles. (Mt 27:32)42Give to the one who begs from you, and do not refuse the one who would borrow from you. Love Your Enemies
43“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ (Lv 19:18; Mt 5:21; Mt 19:19)44But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, (Ex 23:4; Jó 31:29; Sl 7:4; Lc 6:27; Lc 23:34; At 7:60; Rm 12:20; 2 Tm 4:16; 1 Pe 3:9)45so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. (Lc 6:35; At 14:17; Ef 5:1; Fp 2:15)46For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? (Lc 6:32)47And if you greet only your brothers,[9] what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same?
