1Quando acabou de dizer essas coisas, Jesus disse aos seus discípulos:2“Como vocês sabem, estamos a dois dias da Páscoa, e o Filho do homem será entregue para ser crucificado”.3Naquela ocasião, os chefes dos sacerdotes e os líderes religiosos do povo se reuniram no palácio do sumo sacerdote, cujo nome era Caifás,4e juntos planejaram prender Jesus à traição e matá-lo.5Mas diziam: “Não durante a festa, para que não haja tumulto entre o povo”.
Jesus é Ungido em Betânia
6Estando Jesus em Betânia, na casa de Simão, o leproso,7aproximou-se dele uma mulher com um frasco de alabastro contendo um perfume muito caro. Ela o derramou sobre a cabeça de Jesus quando ele se encontrava reclinado à mesa.8Os discípulos, ao verem isso, ficaram indignados e perguntaram: “Por que este desperdício?9Este perfume poderia ser vendido por alto preço, e o dinheiro dado aos pobres”.10Percebendo isso, Jesus lhes disse: “Por que vocês estão perturbando essa mulher? Ela praticou uma boa ação para comigo.11Pois os pobres vocês sempre terão consigo, mas a mim vocês nem sempre terão.12Quando derramou este perfume sobre o meu corpo, ela o fez a fim de me preparar para o sepultamento.13Eu asseguro que em qualquer lugar do mundo inteiro onde este evangelho for anunciado, também o que ela fez será contado, em sua memória”.
A Conspiração
14Então, um dos Doze, chamado Judas Iscariotes, dirigiu-se aos chefes dos sacerdotes15e lhes perguntou: “O que me darão se eu o entregar a vocês?” E fixaram-lhe o preço: trinta moedas de prata.16Desse momento em diante Judas passou a procurar uma oportunidade para entregá-lo.
A Ceia do Senhor
17No primeiro dia da Festa dos Pães sem Fermento, os discípulos dirigiram-se a Jesus e lhe perguntaram: “Onde queres que preparemos a refeição da Páscoa?”18Ele respondeu dizendo que entrassem na cidade, procurassem um certo homem e lhe dissessem: “O Mestre diz: O meu tempo está próximo. Vou celebrar a Páscoa com meus discípulos em sua casa”.19Os discípulos fizeram como Jesus os havia instruído e prepararam a Páscoa.20Ao anoitecer, Jesus estava reclinado à mesa com os Doze.21E, enquanto estavam comendo, ele disse: “Digo que certamente um de vocês me trairá”.22Eles ficaram muito tristes e começaram a dizer-lhe, um após outro: “Com certeza não sou eu, Senhor!”23Afirmou Jesus: “Aquele que comeu comigo do mesmo prato há de me trair.24O Filho do homem vai, como está escrito a seu respeito. Mas ai daquele que trai o Filho do homem! Melhor lhe seria não haver nascido”.25Então, Judas, que haveria de traí-lo, disse: “Com certeza não sou eu, Mestre[1]!” Jesus afirmou: “Sim, é você”[2].26Enquanto comiam, Jesus tomou o pão, deu graças, partiu-o e o deu aos seus discípulos, dizendo: “Tomem e comam; isto é o meu corpo”.27Em seguida tomou o cálice, deu graças e o ofereceu aos discípulos, dizendo: “Bebam dele todos vocês.28Isto é o meu sangue da aliança[3], que é derramado em favor de muitos, para perdão de pecados.29Eu digo que, de agora em diante, não beberei deste fruto da videira até aquele dia em que beberei o vinho novo com vocês no Reino de meu Pai”.30Depois de terem cantado um hino, saíram para o monte das Oliveiras.
Jesus Prediz que Pedro o Negará
31Então Jesus lhes disse: “Ainda esta noite todos vocês me abandonarão. Pois está escrito: “ ‘Ferirei o pastor, e as ovelhas do rebanho serão dispersas’.32Mas, depois de ressuscitar, irei adiante de vocês para a Galileia”.33Pedro respondeu: “Ainda que todos te abandonem, eu nunca te abandonarei!”34Respondeu Jesus: “Asseguro que ainda esta noite, antes que o galo cante, três vezes você me negará”.35Mas Pedro declarou: “Mesmo que seja preciso que eu morra contigo, nunca te negarei”. E todos os outros discípulos disseram o mesmo.
Jesus no Getsêmani
36Então Jesus foi com seus discípulos para um lugar chamado Getsêmani e lhes disse: “Sentem-se aqui enquanto vou ali orar”.37Levando consigo Pedro e os dois filhos de Zebedeu, começou a entristecer-se e a angustiar-se.38Disse-lhes então: “A minha alma está profundamente triste, numa tristeza mortal. Fiquem aqui e vigiem comigo”.39Indo um pouco mais adiante, prostrou-se com o rosto em terra e orou: “Meu Pai, se for possível, afasta de mim este cálice; contudo, não seja como eu quero, mas sim como tu queres”.40Depois, voltou aos seus discípulos e os encontrou dormindo. “Vocês não puderam vigiar comigo nem por uma hora?”, perguntou ele a Pedro.41“Vigiem e orem para que não caiam em tentação. O espírito está pronto, mas a carne é fraca.”42E retirou-se outra vez para orar: “Meu Pai, se não for possível afastar de mim este cálice sem que eu o beba, faça-se a tua vontade”.43Quando voltou, de novo os encontrou dormindo, porque seus olhos estavam pesados.44Então os deixou novamente e orou pela terceira vez, dizendo as mesmas palavras.45Depois voltou aos discípulos e lhes disse: “Vocês ainda dormem e descansam? Chegou a hora! Eis que o Filho do homem está sendo entregue nas mãos de pecadores.46Levantem-se e vamos! Aí vem aquele que me trai!”
Jesus é Preso
47Enquanto ele ainda falava, chegou Judas, um dos Doze. Com ele estava uma grande multidão armada de espadas e varas, enviada pelos chefes dos sacerdotes e líderes religiosos do povo.48O traidor havia combinado um sinal com eles, dizendo-lhes: “Aquele a quem eu saudar com um beijo, é ele; prendam-no”.49Dirigindo-se imediatamente a Jesus, Judas disse: “Salve, Mestre!”, e o beijou.50Jesus perguntou: “Amigo, o que o traz?”[4] Então os homens se aproximaram, agarraram Jesus e o prenderam.51Um dos que estavam com Jesus, estendendo a mão, puxou a espada e feriu o servo do sumo sacerdote, decepando-lhe a orelha.52Disse-lhe Jesus: “Guarde a espada! Pois todos os que empunham a espada, pela espada morrerão.53Você acha que eu não posso pedir a meu Pai, e ele não colocaria imediatamente à minha disposição mais de doze legiões de anjos?54Como então se cumpririam as Escrituras que dizem que as coisas deveriam acontecer desta forma?”55Naquela hora, Jesus disse à multidão: “Estou eu chefiando alguma rebelião, para que vocês venham prender-me com espadas e varas? Todos os dias eu estive ensinando no templo, e vocês não me prenderam!56Mas tudo isso aconteceu para que se cumprissem as Escrituras dos profetas”. Então todos os discípulos o abandonaram e fugiram.
Jesus diante do Sinédrio
57Os que prenderam Jesus o levaram a Caifás, o sumo sacerdote, em cuja casa se haviam reunido os mestres da lei e os líderes religiosos.58E Pedro o seguiu de longe até o pátio do sumo sacerdote, entrou e sentou-se com os guardas, para ver o que aconteceria.59Os chefes dos sacerdotes e todo o Sinédrio[5] estavam procurando um depoimento falso contra Jesus, para que pudessem condená-lo à morte.60Mas nada encontraram, embora se apresentassem muitas falsas testemunhas. Finalmente se apresentaram duas61que declararam: “Este homem disse: ‘Sou capaz de destruir o santuário de Deus e reconstruí-lo em três dias’ ”.62Então o sumo sacerdote levantou-se e disse a Jesus: “Você não vai responder à acusação que estes fazem?”63Mas Jesus permaneceu em silêncio. O sumo sacerdote lhe disse: “Exijo que você jure pelo Deus vivo: se você é o Cristo, o Filho de Deus, diga-nos”.64“Tu mesmo o disseste”[6], respondeu Jesus. “Mas eu digo a todos vós: Chegará o dia em que vereis o Filho do homem assentado à direita do Poderoso e vindo sobre as nuvens do céu.”65Foi quando o sumo sacerdote rasgou as próprias vestes e disse: “Blasfemou! Por que precisamos de mais testemunhas? Vocês acabaram de ouvir a blasfêmia.66O que acham?” “É réu de morte!”, responderam eles.67Então alguns lhe cuspiram no rosto e lhe deram murros. Outros lhe davam tapas68e diziam: “Profetize-nos, Cristo. Quem foi que bateu em você?”
Pedro Nega Jesus
69Pedro estava sentado no pátio, e uma criada, aproximando-se dele, disse: “Você também estava com Jesus, o galileu”.70Mas ele o negou diante de todos, dizendo: “Não sei do que você está falando”.71Depois, saiu em direção à porta, onde outra criada o viu e disse aos que estavam ali: “Este homem estava com Jesus, o Nazareno”.72E ele, jurando, o negou outra vez: “Não conheço esse homem!”73Pouco tempo depois, os que estavam por ali chegaram a Pedro e disseram: “Certamente você é um deles! O seu modo de falar o denuncia”.74Aí ele começou a lançar maldições e a jurar: “Não conheço esse homem!” Imediatamente um galo cantou.75Então Pedro se lembrou da palavra que Jesus tinha dito: “Antes que o galo cante, você me negará três vezes”. E, saindo dali, chorou amargamente.
1When Jesus had finished all these sayings, he said to his disciples,2“You know that after two days the Passover is coming, and the Son of Man will be delivered up to be crucified.” (Mt 20:18; Mt 26:24; Mc 14:1; Lc 22:1; Jo 6:4)3Then the chief priests and the elders of the people gathered in the palace of the high priest, whose name was Caiaphas, (Sl 2:2; Mt 26:57; Mt 26:58; Mt 26:69; Lc 3:2; Lc 11:21; Jo 11:47; Jo 11:49; Jo 18:13; Jo 18:15; At 4:6; At 4:27; Ap 11:2)4and plotted together in order to arrest Jesus by stealth and kill him. (Mt 21:46; Jo 11:53)5But they said, “Not during the feast, lest there be an uproar among the people.” (Mt 27:24)
Jesus Anointed at Bethany
6Now when Jesus was at Bethany in the house of Simon the leper,[1] (Mt 21:17; Mc 14:3; Lc 7:37; Jo 11:18; Jo 12:1)7a woman came up to him with an alabaster flask of very expensive ointment, and she poured it on his head as he reclined at table.8And when the disciples saw it, they were indignant, saying, “Why this waste?9For this could have been sold for a large sum and given to the poor.” (Jo 13:29)10But Jesus, aware of this, said to them, “Why do you trouble the woman? For she has done a beautiful thing to me. (Mt 16:8)11For you always have the poor with you, but you will not always have me. (Dt 15:11; Mt 9:15; Jo 7:33)12In pouring this ointment on my body, she has done it to prepare me for burial. (Jo 19:40)13Truly, I say to you, wherever this gospel is proclaimed in the whole world, what she has done will also be told in memory of her.” (Mt 24:14; At 10:4)
17Now on the first day of Unleavened Bread the disciples came to Jesus, saying, “Where will you have us prepare for you to eat the Passover?” (Ex 12:18; Mc 14:12; Lc 22:7)18He said, “Go into the city to a certain man and say to him, ‘The Teacher says, My time is at hand. I will keep the Passover at your house with my disciples.’” (Mt 26:45; Jo 7:6; Jo 7:8; Jo 7:30; Jo 8:20; Jo 11:28; Jo 13:1; Jo 17:1)19And the disciples did as Jesus had directed them, and they prepared the Passover.20When it was evening, he reclined at table with the twelve.[2] (Mc 14:17; Lc 22:14; Lc 22:21; Jo 13:21)21And as they were eating, he said, “Truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me.” (Jo 6:70)22And they were very sorrowful and began to say to him one after another, “Is it I, Lord?”23He answered, “He who has dipped his hand in the dish with me will betray me. (Jo 13:18)24The Son of Man goes as it is written of him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been better for that man if he had not been born.” (Mt 18:7; Mt 26:54; Mt 26:56; Mc 9:12; Lc 18:31; Lc 24:25; Lc 24:46; Jo 17:12; At 17:2; At 26:22; 1 Co 15:3; 1 Pe 1:10)25Judas, who would betray him, answered, “Is it I, Rabbi?” He said to him, “You have said so.” (Mt 26:49; Mt 26:64; Lc 22:70; Jo 1:38)
Institution of the Lord’s Supper
26Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and after blessing it broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take, eat; this is my body.” (Mt 14:19; Mc 14:22; Lc 22:18; Jo 6:53; 1 Co 10:16; 1 Co 11:23)27And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, saying, “Drink of it, all of you, (Mt 15:36)28for this is my blood of the[3] covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. (Ex 24:8; Zc 9:11; Mt 20:28; Mt 26:26; Mc 1:4; Lc 1:77; Hb 13:20)29I tell you I will not drink again of this fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.” (Mt 13:43)
Jesus Foretells Peter’s Denial
30And when they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives. (Mt 21:1; Mc 14:26; Lc 22:39; Jo 18:1)31Then Jesus said to them, “You will all fall away because of me this night. For it is written, ‘I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.’ (Zc 13:7; Jo 16:32)32But after I am raised up, I will go before you to Galilee.” (Mt 28:7; Mt 28:10; Mt 28:16; Mc 16:7)33Peter answered him, “Though they all fall away because of you, I will never fall away.” (Lc 22:31; Lc 22:33)34Jesus said to him, “Truly, I tell you, this very night, before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times.” (Mt 26:75; Lc 22:34; Jo 13:38)35Peter said to him, “Even if I must die with you, I will not deny you!” And all the disciples said the same. (Lc 22:33; Jo 13:37)
Jesus Prays in Gethsemane
36Then Jesus went with them to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to his disciples, “Sit here, while I go over there and pray.” (Mt 26:30; Mc 14:32; Lc 22:40)37And taking with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, he began to be sorrowful and troubled. (Mt 4:21; Mt 17:1)38Then he said to them, “My soul is very sorrowful, even to death; remain here, and watch[4] with me.” (Sl 42:5; Mt 24:42; Jo 12:27)39And going a little farther he fell on his face and prayed, saying, “My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will.” (Mt 20:22; Mt 26:42; Jo 5:30; Jo 6:38; Fp 2:8; Hb 5:7)40And he came to the disciples and found them sleeping. And he said to Peter, “So, could you not watch with me one hour?41Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” (Mt 6:13; Mt 26:38; 1 Pe 4:7)42Again, for the second time, he went away and prayed, “My Father, if this cannot pass unless I drink it, your will be done.” (Mt 6:10; Mt 26:39)43And again he came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy. (Lc 9:32)44So, leaving them again, he went away and prayed for the third time, saying the same words again. (2 Co 12:8)45Then he came to the disciples and said to them, “Sleep and take your rest later on.[5] See, the hour is at hand, and the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. (Mt 17:22; Mt 20:18; Mt 26:18; Lc 22:53; Jo 12:23; Jo 12:27; Jo 13:1; Jo 17:1)46Rise, let us be going; see, my betrayer is at hand.”
Betrayal and Arrest of Jesus
47While he was still speaking, Judas came, one of the twelve, and with him a great crowd with swords and clubs, from the chief priests and the elders of the people. (Mt 26:14; Mc 14:43; Lc 22:47; Jo 18:3; At 1:16)48Now the betrayer had given them a sign, saying, “The one I will kiss is the man; seize him.”49And he came up to Jesus at once and said, “Greetings, Rabbi!” And he kissed him. (Mt 26:25)50Jesus said to him, “Friend, do what you came to do.”[6] Then they came up and laid hands on Jesus and seized him. (Mt 20:13; Mt 22:12; Jo 13:27)51And behold, one of those who were with Jesus stretched out his hand and drew his sword and struck the servant[7] of the high priest and cut off his ear. (Lc 22:38)52Then Jesus said to him, “Put your sword back into its place. For all who take the sword will perish by the sword. (Gn 9:6; Ez 35:6; Ap 13:10)53Do you think that I cannot appeal to my Father, and he will at once send me more than twelve legions of angels? (2 Rs 6:17; Dn 7:10; Mt 4:11; Lc 8:30; Lc 22:43; Jo 10:18; Jo 18:36)54But how then should the Scriptures be fulfilled, that it must be so?” (Mt 1:22; Mt 26:24)55At that hour Jesus said to the crowds, “Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs to capture me? Day after day I sat in the temple teaching, and you did not seize me. (Mt 4:23; Mt 21:23; Lc 2:46; Jo 8:2; Jo 18:20)56But all this has taken place that the Scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled.” Then all the disciples left him and fled. Jesus Before Caiaphas and the Council
57Then those who had seized Jesus led him to Caiaphas the high priest, where the scribes and the elders had gathered. (Mt 26:3; Mc 14:53; Lc 22:54; Jo 18:12; Jo 18:19)58And Peter was following him at a distance, as far as the courtyard of the high priest, and going inside he sat with the guards to see the end. (Mt 26:57; Jo 7:32; Jo 18:3; Jo 18:15)59Now the chief priests and the whole council[8] were seeking false testimony against Jesus that they might put him to death, (At 6:11)60but they found none, though many false witnesses came forward. At last two came forward (Dt 19:15; Sl 27:12; Sl 35:11)61and said, “This man said, ‘I am able to destroy the temple of God, and to rebuild it in three days.’” (Mt 27:40; Jo 2:19; At 6:14)62And the high priest stood up and said, “Have you no answer to make? What is it that these men testify against you?”[9]63But Jesus remained silent. And the high priest said to him, “I adjure you by the living God, tell us if you are the Christ, the Son of God.” (Lv 5:1; 1 Sm 14:24; 1 Sm 14:26; Is 53:7; Mt 1:17; Mt 14:33; Mt 16:16; Mt 22:42; Mt 27:12; Mt 27:14; Mc 5:7; Lc 22:67; Jo 10:24; Jo 19:9)64Jesus said to him, “You have said so. But I tell you, from now on you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power and coming on the clouds of heaven.” (Sl 110:1; Mt 16:27; Mt 24:30; Mt 26:25; Mc 16:19; Hb 1:3)65Then the high priest tore his robes and said, “He has uttered blasphemy. What further witnesses do we need? You have now heard his blasphemy. (Nm 14:6; Mt 9:3; Jo 10:36; At 14:14)66What is your judgment?” They answered, “He deserves death.” (Lv 24:16)67Then they spit in his face and struck him. And some slapped him, (Is 50:6; Mt 5:39; Mt 27:30; Mc 10:34; Lc 22:63; Jo 18:22; At 23:2)68saying, “Prophesy to us, you Christ! Who is it that struck you?” (Mt 26:63)
Peter Denies Jesus
69Now Peter was sitting outside in the courtyard. And a servant girl came up to him and said, “You also were with Jesus the Galilean.” (Mt 26:3; Mc 14:66; Lc 22:55; Jo 18:16; Jo 18:25)70But he denied it before them all, saying, “I do not know what you mean.”71And when he went out to the entrance, another servant girl saw him, and she said to the bystanders, “This man was with Jesus of Nazareth.” (Mt 2:23)72And again he denied it with an oath: “I do not know the man.”73After a little while the bystanders came up and said to Peter, “Certainly you too are one of them, for your accent betrays you.” (Jz 12:6)74Then he began to invoke a curse on himself and to swear, “I do not know the man.” And immediately the rooster crowed.75And Peter remembered the saying of Jesus, “Before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times.” And he went out and wept bitterly. (Mt 26:34; At 3:13)
