Al doilea discurs al lui Elifaz

1 Atunci Elifaz temanitul a răspuns și a zis: 2 „Răspunde oare înțeleptul cu o cunoștință deșartă și să‑și umple pântecul cu vântul de răsărit? 3 Să se apere folosind cuvinte nefolositoare sau o vorbire fără de folos? 4 Tu dai la o parte chiar și teama de Dumnezeu și împiedici cugetarea înaintea lui Dumnezeu. 5 Căci nelegiuirea ta îți învață gura, și ai ales limba celor vicleni. 6 Gura ta te condamnă, nu eu, buzele tale mărturisesc împotriva ta. 7 Crezi că tu te‑ai născut primul între oameni? Ai fost adus pe lume înaintea dealurilor? 8 Ai fost tu la sfatul lui Dumnezeu? Tu ești singurul care are înțelepciune? 9 Ce cunoști tu, și noi să nu cunoaștem? Ce înțelegi tu, iar noi să nu putem? 10 Între noi sunt oameni cu părul cărunt, oameni mai bătrâni chiar decât tatăl tău. 11 Sunt prea neînsemnate pentru tine mângâierile lui Dumnezeu sau cuvintele care ți‑au fost spuse cu blândețe? 12 De ce îți îndepărtezi inima? Și ce înseamnă strălucirea ochilor tăi, 13 de îți întărâți duhul împotriva lui Dumnezeu și lași să‑ți iasă din gură astfel de cuvinte? 14 Ce este omul ca să poată fi curat și cel născut din femeie ca să fie drept? 15 Dacă Dumnezeu nu Se încrede nici în sfinții Săi și nici chiar cerurile nu sunt curate în ochii Săi, 16 cu atât mai puțin omul care este mârșav și corupt, care bea nedreptatea ca pe apă! 17 Îți voi explica; ascultă‑mă și îți voi istorisi ceea ce am văzut, 18 ceea ce au istorisit oamenii înțelepți, care nu au ascuns nimic din ce le‑au spus părinții lor, 19 pentru că doar lor le‑a fost dată țara și niciun străin n‑a trecut printre ei. 20 Cel rău se chinuie în durere în toate zilele sale, iar cel înspăimântător, în numărul de ani păstrați pentru el. 21 Zgomote îngrozitoare îi umplu urechile; când toate par bine, tâlharii îl atacă. 22 El nu crede că se va întoarce din întuneric; este însemnat pentru sabie.^[1] 23 Aleargă încoace și încolo după pâine, zicând: «Unde e?»^[2] Știe că ziua întunericului este aproape. 24 Necazul și neliniștea îl înspăimântă, se aruncă asupra lui ca un împărat gata de luptă, 25 căci a ridicat mâna împotriva lui Dumnezeu și s‑a mândrit înaintea Celui Atotputernic, 26 și a alergat cu încăpățânare^[3] împotriva Lui, cu grosimea marginilor scuturilor lui. 27 Pentru că și‑a acoperit fața cu grăsime și a adunat osânză pe coapse, 28 va sălășlui în cetăți distruse, în case nelocuite, pregătite să ajungă un morman de pietre. 29 Nu va mai fi bogat, nu‑i va mai rămâne averea, și avuția lui nu va mai împânzi țara. 30 Nu va scăpa de întuneric, o flacără îi va usca mlădițele și suflarea gurii lui Dumnezeu îl va îndepărta. 31 Să nu se înșele încrezându‑se în deșertăciune, căci deșertăciunea îi va fi răsplata. 32 Va fi răsplătit înainte de vreme și mlădițele lui nu vor înverzi. 33 El va fi ca o viță ai cărei struguri necopți au fost scuturați, și ca un măslin ale cărui flori au căzut. 34 Căci gloata celor lipsiți de evlavie va ajunge stearpă și focul va mistui corturile mitei. 35 Ei concep necazul și dau naștere la nelegiuire; pântecul lor pregătește înșelătoria.“

The second speech of Eliphaz

1 Then Eliphaz the Temanite replied, 2 ‘Job, would a wise person answer with a lot of meaningless talk? Would they fill their stomach with the hot east wind? 3 Would they argue with useless words? Would they give worthless speeches? 4 But you even cause others to lose their respect for God. You make it hard for them to be faithful to him. 5 Your sin makes you say evil things. You talk like people who twist the truth. 6 Your own mouth judges you, not mine. Your own lips witness against you. 7 ‘Are you the first man who was ever born? Were you created before the hills? 8 Do you listen in when God speaks with his angels? Do you think you are the only wise person? 9 What do you know that we don’t know? What understanding do you have that we don’t have? 10 People who are old and grey are on our side. And they are even older than your parents! 11 Aren’t God’s words of comfort enough for you? He speaks them to you gently. 12 Why have you let your wild ideas carry you away? Why do your eyes flash with anger? 13 Why do you get so angry with God? Why do words like those pour out of your mouth? 14 ‘Can human beings really be pure? Can those who are born really be right with God? 15 God doesn’t trust his holy angels. Even the heavens aren’t pure in his sight. 16 So he’ll certainly find fault with human beings. After all, they are evil and sinful. They drink up evil as if it were water. 17 ‘Listen to me. I’ll explain things to you. Let me tell you what I’ve seen. 18 I’ll tell you what those who are wise have said. They don’t hide anything they’ve received from their people of long ago. 19 The land was given only to those people. Their wisdom didn’t come from outsiders. And here’s what those who are wise have said. 20 Sinful people always suffer pain. Mean people suffer all their lives. 21 Terrifying sounds fill their ears. When everything seems to be going well, robbers attack them. 22 They lose all hope of escaping the darkness of death. They will certainly be killed by swords. 23 Like vultures, they look around for food. They know that the day they will die is near. 24 Suffering and pain terrify them. Their troubles overpower them, like a king ready to attack his enemies. 25 They shake their fists at God. They boast about themselves and oppose the Mighty One. 26 They boldly charge against him with their thick, strong shields. 27 ‘Their faces are very fat. Their stomachs hang out. 28 They’ll live in towns that have been destroyed. They’ll live in houses where no one else lives. The houses will crumble to pieces. 29 They won’t be rich anymore. Their wealth won’t last. Their property will no longer spread out over the land. 30 They won’t escape the darkness of death. A flame will dry up everything they have. The breath of God will blow them away. 31 Don’t let them fool themselves by trusting in what is worthless. They won’t get anything out of it. 32 Even before they die, they will dry up. No matter what they do, it won’t succeed. 33 They’ll be like vines that are stripped of their unripe grapes. They’ll be like olive trees that drop their flowers. 34 People who are ungodly won’t have any children. Fire will burn up the tents of people who accept money from those who want special favours. 35 Instead of having children, ungodly people create suffering. All they produce is evil. They are full of lies.’
