1Un oarecare Lazăr din Betania, satul Mariei și al Martei, sora acesteia, era bolnav.2Maria era cea care L‑a uns pe Domnul cu parfum și I‑a șters picioarele cu părul ei. Fratele ei, Lazăr, era bolnav.3Surorile au trimis la Isus să‑I spună: „Doamne, iată că cel pe care‑l iubești este bolnav!“4Dar Isus, când a auzit, a zis: „Boala aceasta nu este spre moarte, ci spre slava lui Dumnezeu, pentru ca Fiul lui Dumnezeu să fie slăvit prin ea.“5Isus îi iubea pe Marta, pe sora ei și pe Lazăr.6Prin urmare, când a auzit că Lazăr este bolnav, a mai rămas două zile în locul unde era.7După aceea, Isus le‑a zis ucenicilor: – Să ne ducem din nou în Iudeea!8Ucenicii I‑au răspuns: – Rabbi[1], iudeii tocmai căutau să Te omoare cu pietre, și Tu Te duci iarăși acolo?! (Ioan 1:38)9Isus a răspuns: – Nu sunt douăsprezece ore de lumină în zi? Dacă cineva umblă ziua, nu se împiedică, pentru că vede lumina acestei lumi.10Dar dacă cineva umblă noaptea, se împiedică, pentru că lumina nu este în el.11După ce a spus acestea, le‑a zis: – Lazăr, prietenul nostru, doarme, dar Mă duc să‑l trezesc.12Ucenicii I‑au zis: – Doamne, dacă doarme, atunci se va face bine.13Isus vorbise despre moartea lui, dar ei credeau că vorbește despre somnul obișnuit.14Atunci Isus le‑a spus deschis: – Lazăr a murit.15Și Mă bucur pentru voi că n‑am fost acolo, ca să credeți. Dar să mergem la el!16Atunci Toma, căruia i se zicea „Didymos“[2], le‑a zis celorlalți ucenici: – Să mergem și noi să murim împreună cu El!
Isus, învierea și viața
17Când a ajuns Isus, a aflat că Lazăr era deja de patru zile[3] în mormânt.18Betania era aproape de Ierusalim, cam la cincisprezece stadii[4],19și mulți dintre iudei veniseră la Marta și la Maria ca să le mângâie pentru moartea fratelui lor.20Când a auzit Marta că vine Isus, s‑a dus să‑L întâmpine. Maria însă ședea în casă.21Marta I‑a zis lui Isus: – Doamne, dacă ai fi fost aici, n‑ar fi murit fratele meu!22Dar chiar și acum știu că orice‑I vei cere lui Dumnezeu, Dumnezeu Îți va da!23Isus i‑a zis: – Fratele tău va învia.24Marta I‑a răspuns: – Știu că va învia la învierea din ziua de pe urmă.25Isus i‑a zis: – Eu sunt Învierea și Viața. Cel ce crede în Mine va trăi chiar dacă moare.26Și oricine trăiește și crede în Mine în veci nu va muri. Crezi lucrul acesta?27Ea I‑a răspuns: – Da, Doamne, cred că Tu ești Cristosul, Fiul lui Dumnezeu, Cel Care urma să vină în lume.28Și zicând aceasta, s‑a dus și a chemat‑o pe Maria, sora ei, spunându‑i în șoaptă: „A sosit Învățătorul și te cheamă!“29Cum a auzit aceasta, Maria s‑a ridicat repede și s‑a dus la El.30Isus încă nu intrase în sat, ci era tot în locul unde‑L întâmpinase Marta.31Atunci iudeii care erau cu ea în casă și o mângâiau, când au văzut că Maria se ridică repede și iese, au urmat‑o, crezând că se duce la mormânt, ca să plângă acolo.32Maria, când a ajuns unde era Isus și L‑a văzut, a căzut la picioarele Lui, zicându‑I: – Doamne, dacă ai fi fost aici, n‑ar fi murit fratele meu!33Isus, când a văzut‑o plângând, pe ea și pe iudeii care veniseră cu ea, S‑a înfiorat[5] în duh și S‑a tulburat.34El a întrebat: – Unde l‑ați pus? Ei I‑au răspuns: – Doamne, vino și vezi!35Lui Isus I‑au dat lacrimile.[6]36Atunci iudeii au zis: „Iată cât de mult îl iubea!“37Însă unii dintre ei ziceau: „El, Care a deschis ochii orbului, nu putea face ca nici acesta să nu moară?“
Învierea lui Lazăr
38Isus S‑a înfiorat din nou în Sine și S‑a dus la mormânt. Mormântul era o peșteră la intrarea căreia fusese pusă o piatră.39Isus a zis: – Dați piatra la o parte! Marta, sora celui mort, I‑a zis: – Doamne, deja miroase urât, căci este mort de patru zile!40Isus i‑a zis: – Nu ți‑am spus că, dacă crezi, vei vedea slava lui Dumnezeu?41Au dat deci piatra la o parte. Isus Și‑a ridicat ochii și a zis: „Tată, Îți mulțumesc că M‑ai ascultat[7]!42Știam că întotdeauna Mă asculți, dar am spus aceasta de dragul mulțimii care stă împrejur, ca să creadă că Tu M‑ai trimis.“43După ce a spus acestea, a strigat cu glas tare: „Lazăr, vino afară!“44Cel ce murise a ieșit cu picioarele și mâinile legate cu fâșii de pânză și cu fața înfășurată într‑un ștergar. Isus le‑a zis: – Dezlegați‑l și lăsați‑l să meargă!
Uneltire împotriva lui Isus
45Mulți dintre iudeii care au venit la Maria și au văzut ce a făcut Isus, au crezut în El. (Mat 26:1; Mar 14:1; Lu 22:1)46Dar unii dintre ei s‑au dus la farisei și le‑au spus ce făcuse Isus.47Conducătorii preoților și fariseii au adunat Sinedriul[8] și au zis: – Ce facem? Omul Acesta face multe semne.48Dacă‑L lăsăm să continue așa, toți vor crede în El și vor veni romanii și ne vor nimici atât locul[9], cât și neamul.49Însă unul dintre ei, Caiafa[10], care era mare preot în anul acela, le‑a zis: – Voi nu știți nimic,50nici nu vă gândiți[11] că este mai de folos pentru voi să moară un singur om pentru popor și să nu piară întregul neam.51Dar nu a spus lucrul acesta de la el, ci, fiind mare preot în anul acela, a profețit că Isus urma să moară pentru neam52și nu numai pentru neam, ci și ca să‑i adune laolaltă[12] pe copiii lui Dumnezeu cei risipiți.53Așadar, din ziua aceea s‑au hotărât să‑L omoare.54Drept urmare, Isus nu mai umbla pe față printre iudei, ci a plecat de acolo în regiunea din apropierea pustiei, într‑o cetate numită Efraim, și a rămas acolo cu ucenicii.55Paștele iudeilor era aproape și mulți din ținutul acela se suiau la Ierusalim înainte de Paște ca să se curățească.56Ei Îl căutau pe Isus și‑și spuneau unii altora, în timp ce stăteau în Templu: „Ce credeți? Nu va veni deloc la sărbătoare?“57Dar conducătorii preoților și fariseii dăduseră porunci ca, dacă cineva știe unde este, să le dea de știre, astfel încât să‑L poată aresta.
1Now a certain man was ill, Lazarus of Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha. (Lu 10:38)2It was Mary who anointed the Lord with ointment and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was ill. (Ioan 12:3)3So the sisters sent to him, saying, “Lord, he whom you love is ill.” (Ioan 11:5; Ioan 11:11; Ioan 11:36)4But when Jesus heard it he said, “This illness does not lead to death. It is for the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it.” (Mat 9:24; Ioan 9:3; Ioan 11:11; Ioan 11:40; Ioan 13:31)5Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. (Ioan 11:3)6So, when he heard that Lazarus[1] was ill, he stayed two days longer in the place where he was. (Ioan 2:4; Ioan 7:6; Ioan 7:8)7Then after this he said to the disciples, “Let us go to Judea again.” (Ioan 10:40)8The disciples said to him, “Rabbi, the Jews were just now seeking to stone you, and are you going there again?” (Ioan 1:38; Ioan 8:59; Ioan 10:31)9Jesus answered, “Are there not twelve hours in the day? If anyone walks in the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world. (Lu 13:33; Ioan 9:4; 1 Ioan 2:10)10But if anyone walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him.” (Ier 13:16)11After saying these things, he said to them, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I go to awaken him.” (Mat 27:52)12The disciples said to him, “Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will recover.”13Now Jesus had spoken of his death, but they thought that he meant taking rest in sleep.14Then Jesus told them plainly, “Lazarus has died,15and for your sake I am glad that I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him.”16So Thomas, called the Twin,[2] said to his fellow disciples, “Let us also go, that we may die with him.” (Mat 10:3; Mar 3:18; Lu 6:15; Ioan 13:37; Ioan 14:5; Ioan 20:24; Ioan 20:26; Ioan 21:2; Fapte 1:13)
I Am the Resurrection and the Life
17Now when Jesus came, he found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb four days. (Ioan 11:39)18Bethany was near Jerusalem, about two miles[3] off,19and many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary to console them concerning their brother. (Iov 2:11; Ioan 11:31)20So when Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went and met him, but Mary remained seated in the house. (Lu 10:38)21Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. (Ioan 11:32; Ioan 11:37)22But even now I know that whatever you ask from God, God will give you.” (Ioan 9:31; Ioan 11:42)23Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.”24Martha said to him, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day.” (Lu 14:14; Ioan 5:29; Ioan 6:39; Ioan 11:39)25Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life.[4] Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, (Ioan 1:4; Ioan 3:36; Ioan 5:21; Ioan 6:40; Ioan 6:44; Ioan 6:57; Ioan 12:25; Ioan 14:6; 1 Cor 15:21; Col 3:4)26and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Jesus Weeps
28When she had said this, she went and called her sister Mary, saying in private, “The Teacher is here and is calling for you.” (Mat 26:18; Mar 14:14; Lu 22:11; Ioan 13:13)29And when she heard it, she rose quickly and went to him.30Now Jesus had not yet come into the village, but was still in the place where Martha had met him.31When the Jews who were with her in the house, consoling her, saw Mary rise quickly and go out, they followed her, supposing that she was going to the tomb to weep there. (Ioan 11:19)32Now when Mary came to where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet, saying to him, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.” (Ioan 11:21)33When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come with her also weeping, he was deeply moved[5] in his spirit and greatly troubled. (Mar 14:5; Ioan 11:38; Ioan 12:27; Ioan 13:21)34And he said, “Where have you laid him?” They said to him, “Lord, come and see.”35Jesus wept. (Lu 19:41)36So the Jews said, “See how he loved him!” (Ioan 11:3)37But some of them said, “Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man also have kept this man from dying?” (Ioan 9:6; Ioan 11:21; Ioan 11:32)
Jesus Raises Lazarus
38Then Jesus, deeply moved again, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone lay against it. (Is 22:16; Mat 27:60; Mar 15:46; Lu 24:2; Ioan 11:33; Ioan 20:1)39Jesus said, “Take away the stone.” Martha, the sister of the dead man, said to him, “Lord, by this time there will be an odor, for he has been dead four days.” (Ioan 11:17)40Jesus said to her, “Did I not tell you that if you believed you would see the glory of God?” (Ioan 11:4; Ioan 11:25; Ro 6:4)41So they took away the stone. And Jesus lifted up his eyes and said, “Father, I thank you that you have heard me. (Ioan 17:1)42I knew that you always hear me, but I said this on account of the people standing around, that they may believe that you sent me.” (Mat 26:53; Ioan 3:17; Ioan 11:22; Ioan 12:29; Ioan 17:8; Ioan 17:21)43When he had said these things, he cried out with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out.”44The man who had died came out, his hands and feet bound with linen strips, and his face wrapped with a cloth. Jesus said to them, “Unbind him, and let him go.” (Ioan 5:28; Ioan 19:40; Ioan 20:7)
The Plot to Kill Jesus
45Many of the Jews therefore, who had come with Mary and had seen what he did, believed in him, (Ioan 2:23; Ioan 11:19; Ioan 12:11; Fapte 9:42)46but some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done.47So the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered the council and said, “What are we to do? For this man performs many signs. (Mat 5:22; Mat 26:3; Ioan 12:19; Fapte 4:16)48If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation.” (Ioan 6:15; Ioan 18:36; Fapte 21:28)49But one of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said to them, “You know nothing at all. (Mat 26:3; Ioan 11:51; Ioan 18:13)50Nor do you understand that it is better for you that one man should die for the people, not that the whole nation should perish.” (Ioan 18:14)51He did not say this of his own accord, but being high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus would die for the nation, (Ex 28:30; Num 27:21; 1 Sam 23:9; 1 Sam 30:7; Ezra 2:63; Ne 7:65; Ioan 11:49)52and not for the nation only, but also to gather into one the children of God who are scattered abroad. (Is 49:6; Ioan 10:16; 1 Ioan 2:2)53So from that day on they made plans to put him to death. (Ioan 7:1)54Jesus therefore no longer walked openly among the Jews, but went from there to the region near the wilderness, to a town called Ephraim, and there he stayed with the disciples. (Ioan 7:1; Ioan 7:4)55Now the Passover of the Jews was at hand, and many went up from the country to Jerusalem before the Passover to purify themselves. (2 Cro 30:17; Lu 2:42; Ioan 6:4; Ioan 18:28; Fapte 21:24)56They were looking for[6] Jesus and saying to one another as they stood in the temple, “What do you think? That he will not come to the feast at all?” (Ioan 7:11)57Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that if anyone knew where he was, he should let them know, so that they might arrest him.
