1La vita di Sara fu di centoventisette anni. Tanti furono gli anni della sua vita.2Sara morì a Chiriat-Arba, che è Ebron, nel paese di Canaan, e Abraamo venne a far lutto per Sara e a piangerla.3Poi Abraamo si alzò, si allontanò dalla salma e parlò ai figli di Chet dicendo:4«Io sono straniero e di passaggio tra di voi; datemi la proprietà di una tomba in mezzo a voi per seppellire la salma e toglierla dalla mia vista».5I figli di Chet risposero ad Abraamo:6«Ascoltaci, signore! Tu sei un principe di Dio in mezzo a noi; seppellisci la tua salma nella migliore delle nostre tombe; nessuno di noi ti rifiuterà la sua tomba perché tu ve la seppellisca».7Abraamo si alzò, s’inchinò davanti al popolo del paese, davanti ai figli di Chet,8e parlò loro così: «Se piace a voi che io seppellisca la salma togliendola dalla mia vista, ascoltatemi e intercedete per me presso Efron, figlio di Zoar,9perché mi ceda la grotta di Macpela che è all’estremità del suo campo; me la dia per il suo prezzo intero, come tomba di mia proprietà nel vostro paese».10Or Efron stava seduto in mezzo ai figli di Chet; ed Efron, l’Ittita, rispose ad Abraamo in presenza dei figli di Chet, di tutti quelli che entravano per la porta della sua città:11«No, mio signore, ascoltami! Io ti do il campo e ti do la grotta che vi si trova; te ne faccio dono in presenza dei figli del mio popolo; seppellisci la salma».12Allora Abraamo s’inchinò davanti al popolo del paese13e, in presenza del popolo del paese, disse a Efron: «Ti prego, ascoltami! Ti darò il prezzo del campo, accettalo da me, e io seppellirò lì la salma».14Efron rispose ad Abraamo:15«Signor mio, ascoltami! Un pezzo di terreno di quattrocento sicli d’argento, che cos’è tra me e te? Seppellisci dunque la salma».16Abraamo diede ascolto a Efron e gli pesò il prezzo che egli aveva detto in presenza dei figli di Chet: quattrocento sicli d’argento, di buona moneta corrente sul mercato.17Così il campo di Efron, che era a Macpela di fronte a Mamre, il campo con la grotta che vi si trovava, tutti gli alberi che erano nel campo e in tutti i confini all’intorno,18furono assicurati come proprietà di Abraamo, in presenza dei figli di Chet e di tutti quelli che entravano per la porta della città di Efron.19Subito dopo, Abraamo seppellì sua moglie Sara nella grotta del campo di Macpela di fronte a Mamre, cioè Ebron, nel paese di Canaan.20Il campo e la grotta che vi si trova furono assicurati ad Abraamo, dai figli di Chet, come sepolcro di sua proprietà.

Bestatte deine Tote im vornehmsten unserer Gräber! Keiner von uns wird dir sein Grab verweigern, damit du deine Tote begraben kannst.“7Da stand Abraham auf, verneigte sich vor den Leuten des Landes8und sagte: „Wenn ihr also damit einverstanden seid, dass ich meine Tote hier bei euch bestatte, dann legt bitte bei Efron Ben-Zohar ein Wort für mich ein.9Ich bitte ihn um die Höhle Machpela, die am Rand seines Grundbesitzes liegt. Ich bezahle ihm dafür, was er verlangt, damit ich ein Familiengrab unter euch bekomme.“10Efron saß selbst unter den Hetitern, die sich im Tor ihrer Stadt versammelt hatten. In ihrer Gegenwart sagte er zu Abraham:11„Nein, mein Herr, hör mir zu! Ich schenke dir das Grundstück und die Höhle! Hier vor meinen Landsleuten schenke ich sie dir, damit du deine Tote bestatten kannst!“12Da verneigte sich Abraham vor den Leuten des Landes13und sagte in ihrer Gegenwart zu Efron: „Bitte, hör mich doch an! Ich zahle dir den Preis für das Land. Nimm ihn von mir an, damit ich meine Tote dort bestatten kann.“14Efron erwiderte:15„Hör mich an, Herr! Was bedeutet schon ein Stück Land zwischen dir und mir, das 400 Schekel Silber[2] wert ist? Du kannst deine Tote dort bestatten.“16Abraham ging darauf ein und wog dem Efron die Menge Silber ab, von der dieser gesprochen hatte, 400 Schekel nach dem bei den Händlern üblichen Gewicht.17So ging das Grundstück Efrons, das bei Machpela gegenüber von Mamre liegt, in den Besitz Abrahams über: die Höhle und das dazugehörende Land mit allen Bäumen darauf.18Vor den Augen aller Männer, die im Tor versammelt waren, wurde es als Eigentum Abrahams bestätigt.19Dort in der Höhle von Machpela gegenüber von Mamre bei Hebron im Land Kanaan begrub Abraham seine Frau Sara.20So kamen das Feld und die Höhle der Hetiter als Grabstätte für seine Familie in den Besitz Abrahams.
1Sarah lived 127 years; these were the years of the life of Sarah.2And Sarah died at Kiriath-arba (that is, Hebron) in the land of Canaan, and Abraham went in to mourn for Sarah and to weep for her. Bury your dead in the choicest of our tombs. None of us will withhold from you his tomb to hinder you from burying your dead.”7Abraham rose and bowed to the Hittites, the people of the land.8And he said to them, “If you are willing that I should bury my dead out of my sight, hear me and entreat for me Ephron the son of Zohar,9that he may give me the cave of Machpelah, which he owns; it is at the end of his field. For the full price let him give it to me in your presence as property for a burying place.”10Now Ephron was sitting among the Hittites, and Ephron the Hittite answered Abraham in the hearing of the Hittites, of all who went in at the gate of his city, (Gen 34,20; Gen 34,24; Ru 4,1)11“No, my lord, hear me: I give you the field, and I give you the cave that is in it. In the sight of the sons of my people I give it to you. Bury your dead.”12Then Abraham bowed down before the people of the land.13And he said to Ephron in the hearing of the people of the land, “But if you will, hear me: I give the price of the field. Accept it from me, that I may bury my dead there.”14Ephron answered Abraham,15“My lord, listen to me: a piece of land worth four hundred shekels[3] of silver, what is that between you and me? Bury your dead.” (Eso 30,13; Ez 45,12)16Abraham listened to Ephron, and Abraham weighed out for Ephron the silver that he had named in the hearing of the Hittites, four hundred shekels of silver, according to the weights current among the merchants. (1Cr 21,25; Ger 32,9; Zac 11,12)17So the field of Ephron in Machpelah, which was to the east of Mamre, the field with the cave that was in it and all the trees that were in the field, throughout its whole area, was made over (Gen 25,9; Gen 49,29; Gen 50,13)18to Abraham as a possession in the presence of the Hittites, before all who went in at the gate of his city.19After this, Abraham buried Sarah his wife in the cave of the field of Machpelah east of Mamre (that is, Hebron) in the land of Canaan.20The field and the cave that is in it were made over to Abraham as property for a burying place by the Hittites. Díganle que me la venda en su justo precio, y así tendré entre ustedes un sepulcro para mi familia.10Efrón el hitita, que estaba sentado allí entre su gente, le respondió a Abraham en presencia de todos ellos y de los que pasaban por la puerta de su ciudad:11—No, señor mío, escúcheme bien: yo le regalo el campo, y también la cueva que está en él. Los hijos de mi pueblo son testigos de que yo se los regalo. Entierre usted a su esposa.12Una vez más, Abraham hizo una reverencia ante la gente de ese lugar,13y en presencia de los que allí estaban le dijo a Efrón: —Escúcheme, por favor. Yo insisto en pagarle el precio justo del campo. Acéptelo usted, y así yo podré enterrar allí a mi esposa.14Efrón le contestó a Abraham:15—Señor mío, escúcheme. El campo vale cuatrocientas monedas[1] de plata. ¿Qué es eso entre nosotros? Vaya tranquilo y entierre a su esposa.16Abraham se puso de acuerdo con Efrón, y en presencia de los hititas le pagó lo convenido: cuatrocientas monedas de plata, moneda corriente entre los comerciantes.17Así fue como el campo de Efrón, que estaba en Macpela, cerca de Mamré, pasó a ser propiedad de Abraham, junto con la cueva y todos los árboles que estaban dentro de los límites del campo.18La transacción se hizo en presencia de los hititas y de los que pasaban por la puerta de su ciudad.19Luego Abraham sepultó a su esposa Sara en la cueva del campo de Macpela que está cerca de Mamré, es decir, en Hebrón, en la tierra de Canaán.20De esta manera, el campo y la cueva que estaba en él dejó de ser de los hititas y pasó a ser propiedad de Abraham para sepultura.
