1Or Sarai, moglie di Abramo, non gli aveva dato figli. Aveva una serva egiziana di nome Agar.2Sarai disse ad Abramo: «Ecco, il Signore mi ha fatta sterile; ti prego, va’ dalla mia serva; forse avrò figli da lei». E Abramo diede ascolto alla voce di Sarai.3Così, dopo dieci anni di residenza di Abramo nel paese di Canaan, Sarai, moglie di Abramo, prese la sua serva Agar, l’Egiziana, e la diede per moglie ad Abramo suo marito.4Egli andò da Agar, che rimase incinta; e quando si accorse di essere incinta, guardò la sua padrona con disprezzo.5Sarai disse ad Abramo: «L’offesa fatta a me ricada su di te! Io ti ho dato la mia serva in seno e, da quando si è accorta di essere incinta, mi guarda con disprezzo. Il Signore sia giudice fra me e te».6Abramo rispose a Sarai: «Ecco, la tua serva è in tuo potere; falle ciò che vuoi». Sarai la trattò duramente e quella se ne fuggì da lei.7L’angelo del Signore la trovò presso una sorgente d’acqua, nel deserto, presso la sorgente che è sulla via di Sur,8e le disse: «Agar, serva di Sarai, da dove vieni e dove vai?» Lei rispose: «Fuggo dalla presenza di Sarai, mia padrona».9L’angelo del Signore le disse: «Torna dalla tua padrona e umiliati sotto la sua mano».10L’angelo del Signore soggiunse: «Io moltiplicherò grandemente la tua discendenza e non la si potrà contare, tanto sarà numerosa».11L’angelo del Signore le disse ancora: «Ecco, tu sei incinta e partorirai un figlio al quale porrai nome Ismaele[1], perché il Signore ti ha udita nella tua afflizione;12egli sarà tra gli uomini come un asino selvatico; la sua mano sarà contro tutti, e la mano di tutti contro di lui; e abiterà di fronte a tutti i suoi fratelli».13Allora Agar diede al Signore, che le aveva parlato, il nome di Atta-El-Roi[2], perché disse: «Ho io, proprio qui, veduto andarsene colui che mi ha vista?»14Perciò quel pozzo fu chiamato il pozzo di Lacai-Roi[3]. Ecco, esso è tra Cades e Bered.15Agar partorì un figlio ad Abramo. Al figlio che Agar gli aveva partorito Abramo mise il nome d’Ismaele.16Abramo aveva ottantasei anni quando Agar gli partorì Ismaele.
1Doch Sarai, Abrams Frau, blieb kinderlos. Sie hatte aber eine ägyptische Sklavin namens Hagar.2Da sagte sie zu Abram: „Du siehst, dass Jahwe mich keine Kinder bekommen lässt. Wenn du dich jedoch mit meiner Sklavin einlässt, komme ich vielleicht durch sie zu einem Kind.“ Abram war einverstanden.3Da gab Sarai ihm ihre ägyptische Sklavin zur Frau. Abram lebte damals schon zehn Jahre im Land Kanaan.4Er schlief mit Hagar, und sie wurde schwanger. Als sie merkte, dass sie schwanger war, begann sie, auf ihre Herrin herabzusehen.5Da sagte Sarai zu Abram: „Du bist Schuld an dem Unrecht, das ich ertragen muss! Ich habe dir meine Sklavin überlassen. Und kaum merkt sie, dass sie schwanger ist, verachtet sie mich. Jahwe richte zwischen dir und mir!“[1]6Abram erwiderte: „Hier ist deine Sklavin. Sie ist ja in deiner Gewalt. Mach mit ihr, was du willst!“ Da behandelte Sarai sie so hart, dass sie ihr davonlief.7Doch der Engel Jahwes[2] fand sie an einer Wasserstelle in der Wüste, bei dem Brunnen, der am Weg nach Schur[3] liegt,8und fragte sie: „Hagar, Sklavin Sarais! Wo kommst du her, und wo willst du hin?“ – „Ich bin meiner Herrin davongelaufen“, erwiderte sie.9Da sagte der Engel Jahwes zu ihr: „Geh zu deiner Herrin zurück und ertrage ihre harte Behandlung!10Ich werde dir so viele Nachkommen schenken, dass man sie nicht mehr zählen kann.“11Dann fügte er hinzu: „Du bist schwanger und wirst einen Sohn bekommen, den du Ismaël, 'Gott hört', nennen sollst, denn Jahwe hat dein Jammern gehört.12Er wird ein Wildesel von Mann sein, im Streit mit allen und von allen bekämpft. Und all seinen Brüdern tanzt er auf der Nase herum.“13Da gab Hagar Jahwe, der mit ihr geredet hatte, den Namen El-Roï. Sie sagte: „Du bist ein Gott, der ‹nach mir› sieht.“ Denn sie fügte hinzu: „Habe ich denn wirklich dem nachgeschaut, der mich angesehen hat?“14Darum nennt man den Brunnen jetzt Beër-Lahai-Roï, 'Brunnen des Lebendigen, der nach mir schaut'. Er liegt zwischen Kadesch und Bered.15Hagar gebar Abram einen Sohn, und Abram nannte ihn Ismaël.16Abram war damals 86 Jahre alt.
1Now Sarai, Abram’s wife, had borne him no children. She had a female Egyptian servant whose name was Hagar. (Gen 15,2; Gen 15,3; Gen 21,9; Ga 4,24)2And Sarai said to Abram, “Behold now, the LORD has prevented me from bearing children. Go in to my servant; it may be that I shall obtain children[1] by her.” And Abram listened to the voice of Sarai.3So, after Abram had lived ten years in the land of Canaan, Sarai, Abram’s wife, took Hagar the Egyptian, her servant, and gave her to Abram her husband as a wife. (Gen 12,5)4And he went in to Hagar, and she conceived. And when she saw that she had conceived, she looked with contempt on her mistress.[2] (1Sam 1,6; 1Sam 1,7)5And Sarai said to Abram, “May the wrong done to me be on you! I gave my servant to your embrace, and when she saw that she had conceived, she looked on me with contempt. May the LORD judge between you and me!” (Gen 31,53; 1Sam 24,12)6But Abram said to Sarai, “Behold, your servant is in your power; do to her as you please.” Then Sarai dealt harshly with her, and she fled from her.7The angel of the LORD found her by a spring of water in the wilderness, the spring on the way to Shur. (Gen 25,18; Eso 15,22)8And he said, “Hagar, servant of Sarai, where have you come from and where are you going?” She said, “I am fleeing from my mistress Sarai.”9The angel of the LORD said to her, “Return to your mistress and submit to her.”10The angel of the LORD also said to her, “I will surely multiply your offspring so that they cannot be numbered for multitude.” (Gen 17,20; Gen 21,18; Gen 25,12)11And the angel of the LORD said to her, “Behold, you are pregnant and shall bear a son. You shall call his name Ishmael,[3] because the LORD has listened to your affliction. (Gen 29,32)12He shall be a wild donkey of a man, his hand against everyone and everyone’s hand against him, and he shall dwell over against all his kinsmen.” (Gen 25,18; Giob 21,20; Giob 39,5)13So she called the name of the LORD who spoke to her, “You are a God of seeing,”[4] for she said, “Truly here I have seen him who looks after me.”[5] (Gen 32,30; Eso 19,21; Eso 33,20; Giudic 13,22)14Therefore the well was called Beer-lahai-roi;[6] it lies between Kadesh and Bered. (Gen 14,7; Gen 20,1; Gen 24,62; Gen 25,11; Nu 13,26)15And Hagar bore Abram a son, and Abram called the name of his son, whom Hagar bore, Ishmael.16Abram was eighty-six years old when Hagar bore Ishmael to Abram.

Abram aceptó la propuesta que le hizo Saray.3Entonces ella tomó a Agar, la esclava egipcia, y se la entregó a Abram como mujer. Esto ocurrió cuando ya hacía diez años que Abram vivía en Canaán.4Abram tuvo relaciones con Agar, y ella concibió un hijo. Al darse cuenta Agar de que estaba embarazada, comenzó a mirar con desprecio a su dueña.5Entonces Saray le dijo a Abram: —¡Tú tienes la culpa de mi afrenta! Yo puse a mi esclava en tus brazos, y ahora que se ve embarazada me mira con desprecio. ¡Que el Señor juzgue entre tú y yo!6—Tu esclava está en tus manos —contestó Abram—; haz con ella lo que bien te parezca. Y de tal manera comenzó Saray a maltratar a Agar, que ésta huyó al desierto.7Allí, junto a un manantial que está en el camino a la región de Sur, la encontró el ángel del Señor8y le preguntó: —Agar, esclava de Saray, ¿de dónde vienes y a dónde vas? —Estoy huyendo de mi dueña Saray —respondió ella.9—Vuelve junto a ella y sométete a su autoridad —le dijo el ángel—.10De tal manera multiplicaré tu descendencia, que no se podrá contar.11»Estás embarazada, y darás a luz un hijo, y le pondrás por nombre Ismael,[1] porque el Señor ha escuchado tu aflicción.12Será un hombre indómito como asno salvaje. Luchará contra todos, y todos lucharán contra él; y vivirá en conflicto con todos sus hermanos.13Como el Señor le había hablado, Agar le puso por nombre «El Dios que me ve»,[2] pues se decía: «Ahora he visto al que me ve.»14Por eso también el pozo que está entre Cades y Béred se conoce con el nombre de «Pozo del Viviente que me ve».[3]15Agar le dio a Abram un hijo, a quien Abram llamó Ismael.16Abram tenía ochenta y seis años cuando nació Ismael.
