1Dopo questi fatti, la parola del Signore fu rivolta in visione ad Abramo, dicendo: «Non temere, Abramo, io sono il tuo scudo, e la tua ricompensa sarà grandissima».2Abramo disse: «Signore, Dio, che mi darai? Poiché io me ne vado senza figli e l’erede della mia casa è Eliezer di Damasco».3E Abramo soggiunse: «Tu non mi hai dato discendenza; ecco, uno schiavo nato in casa mia sarà mio erede».4Allora la parola del Signore gli fu rivolta, dicendo: «Questi non sarà tuo erede; ma colui che nascerà da te sarà tuo erede».5Poi lo condusse fuori e gli disse: «Guarda il cielo e conta le stelle, se le puoi contare». E soggiunse: «Tale sarà la tua discendenza».6Egli credette al Signore, che gli contò questo come giustizia.7Il Signore gli disse ancora: «Io sono il Signore che ti ho fatto uscire da Ur dei Caldei per darti questo paese, perché tu lo possegga».8Abramo chiese: «Signore, Dio, da che cosa posso conoscere che ne avrò il possesso?»9Il Signore gli rispose: «Prendimi una giovenca di tre anni, una capra di tre anni, un montone di tre anni, una tortora e un piccione».10Egli prese tutti questi animali, li divise nel mezzo e pose ciascuna metà di fronte all’altra; ma non divise gli uccelli.11Or degli uccelli rapaci calarono sulle bestie morte, ma Abramo li scacciò.12Al tramonto del sole, un profondo sonno cadde su Abramo; ed ecco uno spavento, un’oscurità profonda cadde su di lui.13Il Signore disse ad Abramo: «Sappi per certo che i tuoi discendenti dimoreranno come stranieri in un paese che non sarà loro: saranno fatti schiavi e saranno oppressi per quattrocento anni;14ma io giudicherò la nazione di cui saranno stati servi e, dopo questo, se ne partiranno con grandi ricchezze.15Quanto a te, te ne andrai in pace presso i tuoi padri e sarai sepolto dopo una prospera vecchiaia.16Alla quarta generazione essi torneranno qua; perché l’iniquità degli Amorei non è giunta finora al colmo».17Or come il sole fu tramontato e venne la notte scura, ecco una fornace fumante e una fiamma di fuoco passare in mezzo agli animali divisi.18In quel giorno il Signore fece un patto con Abramo, dicendo: «Io do alla tua discendenza questo paese, dal fiume d’Egitto al gran fiume, il fiume Eufrate;19i Chenei, i Chenizei, i Cadmonei,20gli Ittiti, i Ferezei, i Refaim,21gli Amorei, i Cananei, i Ghirgasei e i Gebusei.

Ich selbst bin dein Schutz, und du wirst reich belohnt werden.“ (Gen 12,7)2Da erwiderte Abram: „Jahwe, mein Herr, was willst du mir denn geben? Ich werde ja kinderlos sterben, und meinen Besitz erbt Eliëser von Damaskus.[2] (Gen 24,2)3Du hast mir doch keinen Sohn gegeben. Der Sklave, der in meinem Haus geboren wurde, wird mich beerben.“4Da kam das Wort Jahwes zu ihm: „Nein, er wird nicht dein Erbe sein, sondern einer, den du zeugen wirst, der soll dich beerben.“5Darauf führte er ihn ins Freie und sagte: „Blick doch zum Himmel auf und zähle die Sterne,[3] wenn du es kannst!“ Und er fügte hinzu: „So wird deine Nachkommenschaft sein!“[4] (Gen 22,17; Ro 4,18)6Abram glaubte Jahwe, und das rechnete er ihm als Gerechtigkeit an.[5] (Ro 4,3; Ga 3,6; Giac 2,23)7Dann sagte er: „Ich, Jahwe, ich habe dich aus dem Ur der Chaldäer herausgeführt, um dir dieses Land als Eigentum zu geben.“8„Jahwe, mein Herr“, erwiderte Abram, „woran könnte ich erkennen, dass ich es je besitzen werde?“9Da sagte er: „Bring mir eine dreijährige Kuh, eine dreijährige Ziege, einen dreijährigen Schafbock, eine Turteltaube und eine junge Taube!“10Abram holte die Tiere, zerteilte jedes in zwei Hälften und legte die Teile einander gegenüber.[6] Nur die Vögel zerteilte er nicht. (Ger 34,18)11Da fielen Raubvögel über die Fleischstücke her, und Abram verscheuchte sie.12Doch während des Sonnenuntergangs fiel ein Tiefschlaf auf Abram, und eine unheimliche, erdrückende Angst legte sich auf ihn.13Da sagte Jahwe zu ihm: „Du sollst jetzt erfahren, dass deine Nachkommen Fremde in einem Land sein werden, das ihnen nicht gehört. Man wird sie versklaven und unterdrücken. Das alles dauert insgesamt vierhundert Jahre.[7] (At 7,6)14Aber auch das Volk, dem sie dienen müssen, wird mein Strafgericht treffen. Und dann werden sie mit großem Besitz von dort wegziehen.15Du selbst wirst ein hohes Alter erreichen und in Frieden sterben und begraben werden.16Erst die vierte Generation wird hierher zurückkehren, denn die Schuld der Amoriter[8] hat noch nicht ihr volles Maß erreicht.“ (Gen 14,7)17Als dann die Sonne ganz untergegangen und es finster geworden war, fuhr auf einmal etwas zwischen den zerteilten Tieren hindurch, das wie ein rauchender Schmelzofen aussah und wie eine brennende Fackel.18So schloss Jahwe damals einen Bund mit Abram und versprach ihm: „Deinen Nachkommen gebe ich dieses Land, vom Strom Ägyptens[9] bis an den großen Euphratstrom, (Gios 15,4)19das ganze Gebiet der Keniter, Kenasiter und Kadmoniter,20der Hetiter, Perisiter und Refaïter,21der Amoriter, Kanaaniter, Girgaschiter und Jebusiter.“

But he did not cut the birds in half. (Le 1,17; Ger 34,18; Ger 34,19)11And when birds of prey came down on the carcasses, Abram drove them away.12As the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell on Abram. And behold, dreadful and great darkness fell upon him. (Gen 2,21)13Then the LORD said to Abram, “Know for certain that your offspring will be sojourners in a land that is not theirs and will be servants there, and they will be afflicted for four hundred years. (Eso 1,11; Eso 1,12; Eso 3,7; Eso 12,40; Eso 12,41; At 7,6; At 7,7; Ga 3,17)14But I will bring judgment on the nation that they serve, and afterward they shall come out with great possessions. (Eso 6,6; Eso 12,36; Sal 105,37)15As for you, you shall go to your fathers in peace; you shall be buried in a good old age. (Gen 25,8)16And they shall come back here in the fourth generation, for the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet complete.” (1Re 21,26; Da 8,23; Am 2,9; Mat 23,32; 1Te 2,16)17When the sun had gone down and it was dark, behold, a smoking fire pot and a flaming torch passed between these pieces.18On that day the LORD made a covenant with Abram, saying, “To your offspring I give[3] this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the river Euphrates, (Gen 12,7; Gen 13,15; Gen 24,7; Gen 26,4; Eso 23,31; Nu 34,2; De 1,7; De 34,4; Gios 1,4; Ne 9,8)19the land of the Kenites, the Kenizzites, the Kadmonites,20the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Rephaim,21the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Girgashites and the Jebusites.”

Tu heredero será tu propio hijo.5Luego el Señor lo llevó afuera y le dijo: —Mira hacia el cielo y cuenta las estrellas, a ver si puedes. ¡Así de numerosa será tu descendencia!6Abram creyó al Señor, y el Señor lo reconoció a él como justo.7Además, le dijo: —Yo soy el Señor, que te hice salir de Ur de los caldeos para darte en posesión esta tierra.8Pero Abram le preguntó: —Señor y Dios, ¿cómo sabré que voy a poseerla?9El Señor le respondió: —Tráeme una ternera, una cabra y un carnero, todos ellos de tres años, y también una tórtola y un pichón de paloma.10Abram llevó todos estos animales, los partió por la mitad, y puso una mitad frente a la otra, pero a las aves no las partió.11Y las aves de rapiña comenzaron a lanzarse sobre los animales muertos, pero Abram las espantaba.12Al anochecer, Abram cayó en un profundo sueño, y lo envolvió una oscuridad aterradora.13El Señor le dijo: —Debes saber que tus descendientes vivirán como extranjeros en tierra extraña, donde serán esclavizados y maltratados durante cuatrocientos años.14Pero yo castigaré a la nación que los esclavizará, y luego tus descendientes saldrán en libertad y con grandes riquezas.15Tú, en cambio, te reunirás en paz con tus antepasados, y te enterrarán cuando ya seas muy anciano.16Cuatro generaciones después tus descendientes volverán a este lugar, porque antes de eso no habrá llegado al colmo la iniquidad de los amorreos.17Cuando el sol se puso y cayó la noche, aparecieron una hornilla humeante y una antorcha encendida, las cuales pasaban entre los animales descuartizados.18En aquel día el Señor hizo un pacto con Abram. Le dijo: —A tus descendientes les daré esta tierra, desde el río de Egipto hasta el gran río, el Éufrates.19Me refiero a la tierra de los quenitas, los quenizitas, los cadmoneos,20los hititas, los ferezeos, los refaítas,21los amorreos, los cananeos, los gergeseos y los jebuseos.
