Giacobbe a Caran

1 Poi Giacobbe si mise in cammino e andò nel paese degli Orientali. 2 Egli vide nei campi un pozzo e tre greggi di pecore, accovacciate lì vicino; a quel pozzo infatti si abbeveravano le greggi; ma la pietra sulla bocca del pozzo era grande. 3 Dopo che tutte le greggi si erano radunate là, i pastori rotolavano la pietra dalla bocca del pozzo, abbeveravano le pecore, poi rimettevano la pietra al suo posto, sulla bocca del pozzo. 4 Giacobbe disse ai pastori: «Fratelli miei, di dove siete?» Quelli risposero: «Siamo di Caran». 5 Egli disse loro: «Conoscete Labano, figlio di Naor?» Ed essi: «Lo conosciamo». 6 Egli disse loro: «Sta bene?» Quelli risposero: «Sta bene; ecco Rachele, sua figlia, che viene con le pecore». 7 Egli disse: «Ecco, è ancora pieno giorno, e non è tempo di radunare il bestiame; abbeverate le pecore e portatele al pascolo». 8 Quelli risposero: «Non possiamo, finché non siano radunate tutte le greggi; allora si rotola la pietra dalla bocca del pozzo e abbeveriamo le pecore». 9 Mentre egli parlava ancora con loro, giunse Rachele con le pecore di suo padre; perché era lei che le portava al pascolo. 10 Quando Giacobbe vide Rachele figlia di Labano, fratello di sua madre, e le pecore di Labano, fratello di sua madre, si avvicinò, rotolò la pietra dalla bocca del pozzo e abbeverò il gregge di Labano, fratello di sua madre. 11 Poi Giacobbe baciò Rachele, alzò la voce e pianse. 12 Giacobbe fece sapere a Rachele che egli era parente del padre di lei e che era figlio di Rebecca. Ed ella corse a dirlo a suo padre. 13 Appena Labano ebbe udito le notizie di Giacobbe figlio di sua sorella, gli corse incontro, l’abbracciò, lo baciò e lo condusse a casa sua. Giacobbe raccontò a Labano tutte queste cose; 14 e Labano gli disse: «Tu sei proprio mie ossa e mia carne!» Così abitò presso di lui per un mese.

Lea e Rachele

15 Poi Labano disse a Giacobbe: «Perché sei mio parente devi forse servirmi per nulla? Dimmi quale dev’essere il tuo salario». 16 Or Labano aveva due figlie: la maggiore si chiamava Lea e la minore Rachele. 17 Lea aveva gli occhi delicati^[1], ma Rachele era avvenente e di bell’aspetto. 18 Giacobbe amava Rachele e disse a Labano: «Io ti servirò sette anni, per Rachele tua figlia minore». 19 Labano rispose: «È meglio che io la dia a te piuttosto che a un altro uomo; resta con me». 20 Giacobbe servì sette anni per Rachele; e gli parvero pochi giorni, a causa del suo amore per lei. 21 Poi Giacobbe disse a Labano: «Dammi mia moglie, perché il mio tempo è compiuto, e io andrò da lei». 22 Allora Labano radunò tutta la gente del luogo e fece un banchetto. 23 Ma, la sera, prese sua figlia Lea e la condusse da Giacobbe, il quale si unì a lei. 24 Labano diede la sua serva Zilpa per serva a Lea, sua figlia. 25 L’indomani mattina ecco che era Lea! Giacobbe disse a Labano: «Che mi hai fatto? Non è per Rachele che ti ho servito? Perché mi hai ingannato?» 26 Labano rispose: «Non è usanza da noi dare la minore prima della maggiore. Finisci la settimana nuziale con questa 27 e ti daremo anche l’altra, per il servizio che presterai da me per altri sette anni». 28 Giacobbe fece così, e finì la settimana di quello sposalizio; poi Labano gli diede in moglie sua figlia Rachele. 29 Labano diede la sua serva Bila per serva a Rachele, sua figlia. 30 Giacobbe si unì pure a Rachele e amò Rachele più di Lea, e servì Labano per altri sette anni.

I figli di Giacobbe

31 Il Signore, vedendo che Lea era odiata, la rese feconda; ma Rachele era sterile. 32 Lea concepì, partorì un figlio e lo chiamò Ruben^[2], perché disse: «Il Signore ha visto la mia afflizione; ora mio marito mi amerà». 33 Poi concepì di nuovo e partorì un figlio, e disse: «Il Signore ha udito che io ero odiata, e mi ha dato anche questo figlio». E lo chiamò Simeone^[3]. 34 Concepì di nuovo e partorì un figlio, e disse: «Questa volta mio marito sarà ben unito a me, perché gli ho partorito tre figli». Per questo fu chiamato Levi^[4]. 35 E concepì di nuovo, partorì un figlio e disse: «Questa volta celebrerò il Signore». Perciò lo chiamò Giuda^[5]. Poi cessò d’aver figli.

Jakob dient um Lea und Rahel

1 Da machte sich Jakob auf den Weg und ging in das Land der Söhne des Ostens 2 und sah sich um, und siehe, da war ein Brunnen auf dem Felde; und siehe, drei Herden Schafe lagen dabei, denn von dem Brunnen pflegten sie die Herden zu tränken. Und ein großer Stein lag vor dem Loch des Brunnens. 3 Und sie pflegten die Herden alle dort zu versammeln und den Stein von dem Brunnenloch zu wälzen und die Schafe zu tränken und taten alsdann den Stein wieder vor das Loch an seine Stelle. 4 Und Jakob sprach zu ihnen: Meine Brüder, wo seid ihr her? Sie antworteten: Wir sind von Haran. 5 Er sprach zu ihnen: Kennt ihr auch Laban, den Sohn Nahors? Sie antworteten: Ja, wir kennen ihn. (Gen 24,10; Gen 24,24) 6 Er sprach: Geht es ihm auch gut? Sie antworteten: Es geht ihm gut; und siehe, da kommt seine Tochter Rahel mit den Schafen. 7 Er sprach: Es ist noch hoher Tag und ist noch nicht Zeit, das Vieh einzutreiben; tränkt die Schafe und geht hin und weidet sie. 8 Sie antworteten: Wir können es nicht, bis alle Herden zusammengebracht sind und wir den Stein von des Brunnens Loch gewälzt haben. Dann tränken wir die Schafe. 9 Als er noch mit ihnen redete, kam Rahel mit den Schafen ihres Vaters, denn sie hütete die Schafe. 10 Als Jakob aber Rahel sah, die Tochter Labans, des Bruders seiner Mutter, und die Schafe Labans, des Bruders seiner Mutter, trat er hinzu und wälzte den Stein von dem Loch des Brunnens und tränkte die Schafe Labans, des Bruders seiner Mutter. 11 Und er küsste Rahel und weinte laut 12 und sagte ihr, dass er ihres Vaters Verwandter wäre und Rebekkas Sohn. Da lief sie und sagte es ihrem Vater. 13 Als aber Laban hörte von Jakob, seiner Schwester Sohn, lief er ihm entgegen und herzte und küsste ihn und führte ihn in sein Haus. Da erzählte er Laban alles, was sich begeben hatte. 14 Da sprach Laban zu ihm: Fürwahr, du bist von meinem Gebein und Fleisch. Und als er nun einen Monat lang bei ihm gewesen war, 15 sprach Laban zu Jakob: Zwar bist du mein Verwandter, aber solltest du mir darum umsonst dienen? Sage an, was soll dein Lohn sein? 16 Laban aber hatte zwei Töchter; die ältere hieß Lea, die jüngere Rahel. 17 Leas Augen waren sanft, Rahel aber war schön von Gestalt und von Angesicht. 18 Und Jakob gewann Rahel lieb und sprach: Ich will dir sieben Jahre um Rahel, deine jüngere Tochter, dienen. 19 Laban antwortete: Es ist besser, ich gebe sie dir als einem andern; bleib bei mir. 20 So diente Jakob um Rahel sieben Jahre, und es kam ihm vor, als wären’s einzelne Tage, so lieb hatte er sie. 21 Und Jakob sprach zu Laban: Gib mir nun meine Braut; denn die Zeit ist da, dass ich zu ihr gehe. 22 Da lud Laban alle Leute des Ortes ein und machte ein Hochzeitsmahl. 23 Am Abend aber nahm er seine Tochter Lea und brachte sie zu Jakob; und er ging zu ihr. 24 Und Laban gab seiner Tochter Lea seine Magd Silpa zur Magd. 25 Am Morgen aber, siehe, da war es Lea. Und Jakob sprach zu Laban: Warum hast du mir das angetan? Habe ich dir nicht um Rahel gedient? Warum hast du mich denn betrogen? 26 Laban antwortete: Es ist nicht Sitte in unserm Lande, dass man die Jüngere weggebe vor der Älteren. 27 Halte mit dieser die Hochzeitswoche, so will ich dir die andere auch geben für den Dienst, den du bei mir noch weitere sieben Jahre leisten sollst. (Gen 31,14) 28 Das tat Jakob und hielt die Hochzeitswoche. Da gab ihm Laban seine Tochter Rahel zur Frau. 29 Und er gab seiner Tochter Rahel seine Magd Bilha zur Magd. 30 So ging Jakob auch zu Rahel ein und hatte Rahel lieber als Lea; und er diente bei ihm noch weitere sieben Jahre. Jakobs Kinder

31 Als aber der HERR sah, dass Lea ungeliebt war, machte er sie fruchtbar; Rahel aber war unfruchtbar. 32 Und Lea ward schwanger und gebar einen Sohn; den nannte sie Ruben und sprach: Der HERR hat angesehen mein Elend; nun wird mich mein Mann lieb haben. 33 Und sie ward abermals schwanger und gebar einen Sohn und sprach: Der HERR hat gehört, dass ich ungeliebt bin, und hat mir diesen auch gegeben. Und nannte ihn Simeon. 34 Abermals ward sie schwanger und gebar einen Sohn und sprach: Nun wird mein Mann mir doch zugetan sein, denn ich habe ihm drei Söhne geboren. Darum nannte sie ihn Levi. 35 Und sie wurde abermals schwanger und gebar einen Sohn und sprach: Nun will ich dem HERRN danken. Darum nannte sie ihn Juda. Und sie hörte auf, Kinder zu gebären.

1 Then Jacob went on his journey, and came into the land of the people of the east. 2 And he looked, and behold a well in the field, and, lo, there were three flocks of sheep lying by it; for out of that well they watered the flocks: and a great stone was upon the well' mouth. 3 And thither were all the flocks gathered: and they rolled the stone from the well' mouth, and watered the sheep, and put the stone again upon the well' mouth in his place. 4 And Jacob said unto them, My brethren, whence be ye? And they said, Of Haran are we. 5 And he said unto them, Know ye Laban the son of Nahor? And they said, We know him . 6 And he said unto them, Is he well? And they said, He is well: and, behold, Rachel his daughter cometh with the sheep. 7 And he said, Lo, it is yet high day, neither is it time that the cattle should be gathered together: water ye the sheep, and go and feed them . 8 And they said, We cannot, until all the flocks be gathered together, and till they roll the stone from the well' mouth; then we water the sheep. 9 And while he yet spake with them, Rachel came with her father' sheep: for she kept them. 10 And it came to pass, when Jacob saw Rachel the daughter of Laban his mother' brother, and the sheep of Laban his mother' brother, that Jacob went near, and rolled the stone from the well' mouth, and watered the flock of Laban his mother' brother. 11 And Jacob kissed Rachel, and lifted up his voice, and wept. 12 And Jacob told Rachel that he was her father' brother, and that he was Rebekah' son: and she ran and told her father. 13 And it came to pass, when Laban heard the tidings of Jacob his sister' son, that he ran to meet him, and embraced him, and kissed him, and brought him to his house. And he told Laban all these things. 14 And Laban said to him, Surely thou art my bone and my flesh. And he abode with him the space of a month. 15 And Laban said unto Jacob, Because thou art my brother, shouldest thou therefore serve me for nought? tell me, what shall thy wages be ? 16 And Laban had two daughters: the name of the elder was Leah, and the name of the younger was Rachel. 17 Leah was tender eyed; but Rachel was beautiful and well favoured. 18 And Jacob loved Rachel; and said, I will serve thee seven years for Rachel thy younger daughter. 19 And Laban said, It is better that I give her to thee, than that I should give her to another man: abide with me. 20 And Jacob served seven years for Rachel; and they seemed unto him but a few days, for the love he had to her. 21 And Jacob said unto Laban, Give me my wife, for my days are fulfilled, that I may go in unto her. 22 And Laban gathered together all the men of the place, and made a feast. 23 And it came to pass in the evening, that he took Leah his daughter, and brought her to him; and he went in unto her. 24 And Laban gave unto his daughter Leah Zilpah his maid for an handmaid. 25 And it came to pass, that in the morning, behold, it was Leah: and he said to Laban, What is this thou hast done unto me? did not I serve with thee for Rachel? wherefore then hast thou beguiled me? 26 And Laban said, It must not be so done in our country, to give the younger before the firstborn. 27 Fulfil her week, and we will give thee this also for the service which thou shalt serve with me yet seven other years. 28 And Jacob did so, and fulfilled her week: and he gave him Rachel his daughter to wife also. 29 And Laban gave to Rachel his daughter Bilhah his handmaid to be her maid. 30 And he went in also unto Rachel, and he loved also Rachel more than Leah, and served with him yet seven other years. 31 And when the LORD saw that Leah was hated, he opened her womb: but Rachel was barren. 32 And Leah conceived, and bare a son, and she called his name Reuben: for she said, Surely the LORD hath looked upon my affliction; now therefore my husband will love me. 33 And she conceived again, and bare a son; and said, Because the LORD hath heard that I was hated, he hath therefore given me this son also: and she called his name Simeon. 34 And she conceived again, and bare a son; and said, Now this time will my husband be joined unto me, because I have born him three sons: therefore was his name called Levi. 35 And she conceived again, and bare a son: and she said, Now will I praise the LORD: therefore she called his name Judah; and left bearing.

Jacob llega a Padán Aram

1 Jacob continuó su viaje y llegó a la tierra de los orientales. 2 Al llegar vio, en medio del campo, un pozo donde descansaban tres rebaños de ovejas, ya que éstas bebían agua de allí. Sobre la boca del pozo había una piedra muy grande. 3 Por eso los pastores corrían la piedra sólo cuando estaban juntos todos los rebaños, y luego de abrevar a las ovejas volvían a colocarla en su lugar, sobre la boca del pozo. 4 Jacob les preguntó a los pastores: —¿De dónde son ustedes? —Somos de Jarán —respondieron. 5 —¿Conocen a Labán, el hijo de Najor? —volvió a preguntar Jacob. —Claro que sí —respondieron. 6 Jacob siguió preguntando: —¿Se encuentra bien de salud? —Sí, está bien —le contestaron—. A propósito, ahí viene su hija Raquel con las ovejas. 7 Entonces Jacob les dijo: —Todavía estamos en pleno día, y es muy temprano para encerrar el rebaño. ¿Por qué no les dan de beber a las ovejas y las llevan a pastar? 8 Y ellos respondieron: —No podemos hacerlo hasta que se junten todos los rebaños y los pastores quiten la piedra que está sobre la boca del pozo. Sólo entonces podremos dar de beber a las ovejas. 9 Todavía estaba Jacob hablando con ellos, cuando Raquel llegó con las ovejas de su padre, pues era ella quien las cuidaba. 10 En cuanto Jacob vio a Raquel, hija de su tío Labán, con las ovejas de éste, se acercó y quitó la piedra que estaba sobre la boca del pozo, y les dio de beber a las ovejas. 11 Luego besó a Raquel, rompió en llanto, 12 y le contó que era pariente de Labán, por ser hijo de su hermana Rebeca. Raquel salió entonces corriendo a contárselo a su padre. 13 Al oír Labán las noticias acerca de su sobrino Jacob, salió a recibirlo y, entre abrazos y besos, lo llevó a su casa. Allí Jacob le contó todo lo que había sucedido, 14 y Labán le dijo: «Realmente, tú eres de mi propia sangre.» Jacob había estado ya un mes con Labán

Jacob se casa con Lea y Raquel

15 cuando éste le dijo: —Por más que seas mi pariente, no vas a trabajar para mí gratis. Dime cuánto quieres ganar. 16 Labán tenía dos hijas. La mayor se llamaba Lea, y la menor, Raquel. 17 Lea tenía ojos apagados,^[1] mientras que Raquel era una mujer muy hermosa. 18 Como Jacob se había enamorado de Raquel, le dijo a su tío: —Me ofrezco a trabajar para ti siete años, a cambio de Raquel, tu hija menor. 19 Labán le contestó: —Es mejor que te la entregue a ti, y no a un extraño. Quédate conmigo. 20 Así que Jacob trabajó siete años para poder casarse con Raquel, pero como estaba muy enamorado de ella le pareció poco tiempo. 21 Entonces Jacob le dijo a Labán: —Ya he cumplido con el tiempo pactado. Dame mi mujer para que me case con ella. 22 Labán reunió a toda la gente del lugar y ofreció una gran fiesta. 23 Pero cuando llegó la noche, tomó a su hija Lea y se la entregó a Jacob, y Jacob se acostó con ella. 24 Además, como Lea tenía una criada que se llamaba Zilpá, Labán se la dio, para que la atendiera. 25 A la mañana siguiente, Jacob se dio cuenta de que había estado con Lea, y le reclamó a Labán: —¿Qué me has hecho? ¿Acaso no trabajé contigo para casarme con Raquel? ¿Por qué me has engañado? 26 Labán le contestó: —La costumbre en nuestro país es casar primero a la mayor y luego a la menor. 27 Por eso, cumple ahora con la semana nupcial de ésta, y por siete años más de trabajo te daré la otra. 28 Así lo hizo Jacob, y cuando terminó la semana nupcial de la primera, Labán le entregó a Raquel por esposa. 29 También Raquel tenía una criada, llamada Bilhá, y Labán se la dio para que la atendiera. 30 Jacob entonces se acostó con Raquel, y la amó mucho más que a Lea, aunque tuvo que trabajar para Labán siete años más.

Los hijos de Jacob

31 Cuando el Señor vio que Lea no era amada, le concedió hijos. Mientras tanto, Raquel permaneció estéril. 32 Lea quedó embarazada y dio a luz un hijo, al que llamó Rubén,^[2] porque dijo: «El Señor ha visto mi aflicción; ahora sí me amará mi esposo.» 33 Lea volvió a quedar embarazada y dio a luz otro hijo, al que llamó Simeón,^[3] porque dijo: «Llegó a oídos del Señor que no soy amada, y por eso me dio también este hijo.» 34 Luego quedó embarazada de nuevo y dio a luz un tercer hijo, al que llamó Leví,^[4] porque dijo: «Ahora sí me amará mi esposo, porque le he dado tres hijos.» 35 Lea volvió a quedar embarazada, y dio a luz un cuarto hijo, al que llamó Judá^[5] porque dijo: «Esta vez alabaré al Señor.» Después de esto, dejó de dar a luz.
