Il libro delle profezie di Geremia bruciato dal re Ioiachim

1 L’anno quarto di Ioiachim, figlio di Giosia, re di Giuda, questa parola fu rivolta dal Signore a Geremia in questi termini: 2 «Prenditi un rotolo da scrivere e scrivici tutte le parole che ti ho dette contro Israele, contro Giuda e contro tutte le nazioni, dal giorno che cominciai a parlarti, cioè dal tempo di Giosia, fino a oggi. 3 Forse quelli della casa di Giuda, udendo tutto il male che io penso di far loro, si convertiranno ciascuno dalla sua via malvagia, e io perdonerò la loro iniquità e il loro peccato». 4 Allora Geremia chiamò Baruc, figlio di Neria, e Baruc scrisse in un rotolo da scrivere, sotto dettatura di Geremia, tutte le parole che il Signore aveva dette a Geremia. 5 Poi Geremia diede quest’ordine a Baruc: «Io sono impedito e non posso entrare nella casa del Signore; 6 perciò va’ tu e leggi, dal libro che hai scritto sotto mia dettatura, le parole del Signore in presenza del popolo, nella casa del Signore, il giorno del digiuno; leggile anche in presenza di tutti quelli di Giuda che saranno venuti dalle loro città. 7 Forse presenteranno le loro suppliche al Signore e si convertiranno ciascuno dalla sua via malvagia; perché l’ira e il furore che il Signore ha espresso contro questo popolo sono grandi». 8 Baruc, figlio di Neria, fece tutto quello che gli aveva ordinato il profeta Geremia e lesse dal libro le parole del Signore. 9 L’anno quinto di Ioiachim, figlio di Giosia, re di Giuda, il nono mese, fu pubblicato un digiuno in presenza del Signore, per tutto il popolo di Gerusalemme e per tutto il popolo venuto dalle città di Giuda a Gerusalemme. 10 Baruc lesse dal libro le parole di Geremia in presenza di tutto il popolo, nella casa del Signore, nella camera di Ghemaria, figlio di Safan, segretario, nel cortile superiore, all’ingresso della porta nuova della casa del Signore. 11 Micaia, figlio di Ghemaria, figlio di Safan, udì tutte le parole del Signore lette dal libro; 12 scese nella casa del re, nella camera del segretario, ed ecco che là stavano seduti tutti i capi: Elisama il segretario, Delaia figlio di Semaia, Elnatan figlio di Acbor, Ghemaria figlio di Safan, Sedechia figlio di Anania e tutti gli altri capi. 13 Micaia riferì loro tutte le parole che aveva udite mentre Baruc leggeva il libro in presenza del popolo. 14 Allora tutti i capi mandarono Ieudi, figlio di Netania, figlio di Selemia, figlio di Cusci, a Baruc per dirgli: «Prendi in mano il rotolo dal quale tu hai letto in presenza del popolo e vieni». Baruc, figlio di Neria, prese in mano il rotolo e andò da loro. 15 Essi gli dissero: «Siediti e leggilo qui a noi». Baruc lo lesse in loro presenza. 16 Quando essi udirono tutte quelle parole, si volsero spaventati gli uni agli altri e dissero a Baruc: «Non mancheremo di riferire tutte queste parole al re». 17 Poi chiesero a Baruc: «Dicci ora come hai scritto tutte queste parole uscite dalla sua bocca». 18 Baruc rispose loro: «Egli mi ha dettato di bocca sua tutte queste parole e io le ho scritte con inchiostro nel libro». 19 Allora i capi dissero a Baruc: «Vatti a nascondere, tu e Geremia; e nessuno sappia dove siete». 20 Poi andarono dal re, nel cortile, riposero il rotolo nella camera di Elisama, segretario, e riferirono al re tutte quelle parole. 21 Il re mandò Ieudi a prendere il rotolo; ed egli lo prese dalla camera di Elisama, segretario. Ieudi lo lesse in presenza del re e in presenza di tutti i capi che stavano in piedi a fianco del re. 22 Il re stava seduto nel suo palazzo d’inverno; era il nono mese e il braciere ardeva davanti a lui. 23 Appena Ieudi leggeva tre o quattro colonne, il re le tagliava con il temperino da scriba e le gettava nel fuoco del braciere, finché tutto il rotolo fu consumato dal fuoco del braciere. 24 Né il re, né alcuno dei suoi servitori che udirono tutte quelle parole rimasero spaventati o si stracciarono le vesti. 25 Benché Elnatan, Delaia e Ghemaria supplicassero il re perché non bruciasse il rotolo, egli non volle dar loro ascolto. 26 Il re ordinò a Ierameel, figlio del re, a Sesaia, figlio di Azriel, e a Selemia, figlio di Abdeel, di arrestare Baruc, segretario, e il profeta Geremia. Ma il Signore li nascose. 27 Dopo che il re ebbe bruciato il rotolo e le parole che Baruc aveva scritte sotto dettatura di Geremia, la parola del Signore fu rivolta a Geremia in questi termini: 28 «Prenditi di nuovo un altro rotolo e scrivici tutte le parole di prima che erano nel primo rotolo, che Ioiachim re di Giuda ha bruciato. 29 Riguardo a Ioiachim, re di Giuda, tu dirai: “Così parla il Signore: Tu hai bruciato quel rotolo dicendo: ‘Perché hai scritto in esso che il re di Babilonia verrà certamente e distruggerà questo paese e farà in modo che non vi sarà più né uomo né bestia?’ 30 Perciò così parla il Signore riguardo a Ioiachim, re di Giuda: Egli non avrà nessuno che sieda sul trono di Davide, e il suo cadavere sarà gettato fuori, esposto al caldo del giorno e al gelo della notte. 31 Io punirò lui, la sua discendenza e i suoi servitori della loro iniquità, e farò venire su di loro, sugli abitanti di Gerusalemme e sugli uomini di Giuda tutto il male che ho pronunciato contro di loro, senza che essi abbiano dato ascolto”». 32 Geremia prese un altro rotolo e lo diede a Baruc, figlio di Neria, segretario, il quale vi scrisse, sotto dettatura di Geremia, tutte le parole del libro che Ioiachim, re di Giuda, aveva bruciato nel fuoco; e vi furono aggiunte molte altre parole simili a quelle.

Jehoiakim Burns Jeremiah’s Scroll

1 In the fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, this word came to Jeremiah from the Lord: (Ger 25,1; Ger 36,9; Ger 45,1) 2 “Take a scroll and write on it all the words that I have spoken to you against Israel and Judah and all the nations, from the day I spoke to you, from the days of Josiah until today. 3 It may be that the house of Judah will hear all the disaster that I intend to do to them, so that every one may turn from his evil way, and that I may forgive their iniquity and their sin.” (Ger 18,8; Ger 26,3; Ger 31,34; Ez 12,3; Am 5,15; So 2,3)

4 Then Jeremiah called Baruch the son of Neriah, and Baruch wrote on a scroll at the dictation of Jeremiah all the words of the Lord that he had spoken to him. (Ger 32,12; Ger 36,2) 5 And Jeremiah ordered Baruch, saying, “I am banned from going to the house of the Lord, (Ger 32,2; Ger 33,1; Ger 36,4; Ger 39,15)

6 so you are to go, and on a day of fasting in the hearing of all the people in the Lord’s house you shall read the words of the Lord from the scroll that you have written at my dictation. You shall read them also in the hearing of all the men of Judah who come out of their cities. (Ger 36,9) 7 It may be that their plea for mercy will come before the Lord, and that every one will turn from his evil way, for great is the anger and wrath that the Lord has pronounced against this people.” (Ger 36,3) 8 And Baruch the son of Neriah did all that Jeremiah the prophet ordered him about reading from the scroll the words of the Lord in the Lord’s house. 9 In the fifth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, in the ninth month, all the people in Jerusalem and all the people who came from the cities of Judah to Jerusalem proclaimed a fast before the Lord. (2Cr 20,3; Ger 36,1; Ger 36,22) 10 Then, in the hearing of all the people, Baruch read the words of Jeremiah from the scroll, in the house of the Lord, in the chamber of Gemariah the son of Shaphan the secretary, which was in the upper court, at the entry of the New Gate of the Lord’s house. 12 he went down to the king’s house, into the secretary’s chamber, and all the officials were sitting there: Elishama the secretary, Delaiah the son of Shemaiah, Elnathan the son of Achbor, Gemariah the son of Shaphan, Zedekiah the son of Hananiah, and all the officials. 13 And Micaiah told them all the words that he had heard, when Baruch read the scroll in the hearing of the people. 14 Then all the officials sent Jehudi the son of Nethaniah, son of Shelemiah, son of Cushi, to say to Baruch, “Take in your hand the scroll that you read in the hearing of the people, and come.” So Baruch the son of Neriah took the scroll in his hand and came to them. (Ger 36,26; Ger 37,3; Ger 37,13; Ger 38,1)

15 And they said to him, “Sit down and read it.” So Baruch read it to them. 16 When they heard all the words, they turned one to another in fear. And they said to Baruch, “We must report all these words to the king.” (Ger 36,20) 17 Then they asked Baruch, “Tell us, please, how did you write all these words? Was it at his dictation?” 18 Baruch answered them, “He dictated all these words to me, while I wrote them with ink on the scroll.” (Ger 36,32; Ro 16,22) 19 Then the officials said to Baruch, “Go and hide, you and Jeremiah, and let no one know where you are.” 20 So they went into the court to the king, having put the scroll in the chamber of Elishama the secretary, and they reported all the words to the king. (Ger 36,12) 21 Then the king sent Jehudi to get the scroll, and he took it from the chamber of Elishama the secretary. And Jehudi read it to the king and all the officials who stood beside the king. 22 It was the ninth month, and the king was sitting in the winter house, and there was a fire burning in the fire pot before him. (Ger 36,9; Am 3,15; Giov 10,22) 23 As Jehudi read three or four columns, the king would cut them off with a knife and throw them into the fire in the fire pot, until the entire scroll was consumed in the fire that was in the fire pot. 24 Yet neither the king nor any of his servants who heard all these words was afraid, nor did they tear their garments. (Gios 7,6; Ger 36,16) 25 Even when Elnathan and Delaiah and Gemariah urged the king not to burn the scroll, he would not listen to them. (Is 59,16; Ger 36,12) 26 And the king commanded Jerahmeel the king’s son and Seraiah the son of Azriel and Shelemiah the son of Abdeel to seize Baruch the secretary and Jeremiah the prophet, but the Lord hid them. 27 Now after the king had burned the scroll with the words that Baruch wrote at Jeremiah’s dictation, the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah: 28 “Take another scroll and write on it all the former words that were in the first scroll, which Jehoiakim the king of Judah has burned. 29 And concerning Jehoiakim king of Judah you shall say, ‘Thus says the Lord, You have burned this scroll, saying, “Why have you written in it that the king of Babylon will certainly come and destroy this land, and will cut off from it man and beast?” (Ger 26,9) 30 Therefore thus says the Lord concerning Jehoiakim king of Judah: He shall have none to sit on the throne of David, and his dead body shall be cast out to the heat by day and the frost by night. (Ger 22,2; Ger 22,4; Ger 22,19; Ger 22,30)

31 And I will punish him and his offspring and his servants for their iniquity. I will bring upon them and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem and upon the people of Judah all the disaster that I have pronounced against them, but they would not hear.’” (Ger 1,16) 32 Then Jeremiah took another scroll and gave it to Baruch the scribe, the son of Neriah, who wrote on it at the dictation of Jeremiah all the words of the scroll that Jehoiakim king of Judah had burned in the fire. And many similar words were added to them. (Ger 36,4; Ger 36,18)
