English Standard Version

di Crossway
1 In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judea, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of the region of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene, (Mat 14,1; Mat 27,2; Mar 6,14; Lu 2,1; Lu 2,2; Lu 3,19; Lu 8,3; Lu 9,7; Lu 9,9; Lu 13,31; Lu 23,7; At 4,27; At 13,1)2 during the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John the son of Zechariah in the wilderness. (Gios 15,61; Giudic 1,16; Mat 3,1; Mat 26,3; Mar 1,2; Lu 1,80; Giov 1,6; Giov 18,13; Giov 18,24; At 4,6)3 And he went into all the region around the Jordan, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. (Mat 26,28; Lu 1,77; At 2,38)4 As it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet, “The voice of one crying in the wilderness: ‘Prepare the way of the Lord,[1] make his paths straight. (Is 40,3; Lu 1,76; Lu 4,17; Giov 1,23; At 8,28)5 Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be made low, and the crooked shall become straight, and the rough places shall become level ways, (Is 42,16; Is 45,2; Is 49,11; Is 57,14; Zac 4,7)6 and all flesh shall see the salvation of God.’” (Sal 98,2; Is 52,10; Lu 1,69; Lu 1,71; Lu 1,77; Lu 2,30; At 28,28; Tit 2,11)7 He said therefore to the crowds that came out to be baptized by him, “You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? (Sal 140,3; Mat 12,34; Mat 23,33; Ro 5,9; Ef 5,6; Col 3,6; 1Te 1,10)8 Bear fruits in keeping with repentance. And do not begin to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children for Abraham. (Lu 4,3; Giov 8,39; At 26,20)9 Even now the axe is laid to the root of the trees. Every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.” (Mat 7,19; Lu 13,7; Lu 13,9; Giov 15,2; Giov 15,6)10 And the crowds asked him, “What then shall we do?” (At 2,37; At 16,30; At 22,10)11 And he answered them, “Whoever has two tunics[2] is to share with him who has none, and whoever has food is to do likewise.” (Is 58,7; Da 4,27; Lu 18,22; Ef 4,28; Giac 2,15; 1G 3,17)12 Tax collectors also came to be baptized and said to him, “Teacher, what shall we do?” (Mat 21,32; Lu 3,10; Lu 7,29)13 And he said to them, “Collect no more than you are authorized to do.” (Lu 19,8)14 Soldiers also asked him, “And we, what shall we do?” And he said to them, “Do not extort money from anyone by threats or by false accusation, and be content with your wages.” (Lu 3,10; Lu 3,13; 1Co 9,7)15 As the people were in expectation, and all were questioning in their hearts concerning John, whether he might be the Christ, (Mat 1,17; Giov 1,19)16 John answered them all, saying, “I baptize you with water, but he who is mightier than I is coming, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. (Is 5,27; Mal 3,2; Giov 1,15; Giov 1,26; Giov 1,27; Giov 1,33; Giov 3,30; At 1,5; At 2,3; At 11,16; At 13,25)17 His winnowing fork is in his hand, to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his barn, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.” (Is 30,24; Mal 4,1; Mat 13,30; Mar 9,43; Mar 9,48)18 So with many other exhortations he preached good news to the people. (Giov 20,30; Giov 21,25)19 But Herod the tetrarch, who had been reproved by him for Herodias, his brother’s wife, and for all the evil things that Herod had done, (Mat 14,3; Mar 6,17; Lu 3,1)20 added this to them all, that he locked up John in prison. (Giov 3,24)21 Now when all the people were baptized, and when Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, the heavens were opened, (Mat 3,13; Mar 1,9; Giov 1,32; At 7,56)22 and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form, like a dove; and a voice came from heaven, “You are my beloved Son;[3] with you I am well pleased.”[4] (Sal 2,7; Is 42,1; Lu 4,18; Lu 4,21; Lu 9,35; Giov 12,28; At 10,38; Ef 1,6; Col 1,13; 2P 1,17; 1G 5,9)23 Jesus, when he began his ministry, was about thirty years of age, being the son (as was supposed) of Joseph, the son of Heli, (Nu 4,3; Mat 1,1; Mat 4,17; Mat 13,55; Lu 4,22; Giov 1,45; Giov 6,42; At 1,1; At 1,22)24 the son of Matthat, the son of Levi, the son of Melchi, the son of Jannai, the son of Joseph,25 the son of Mattathias, the son of Amos, the son of Nahum, the son of Esli, the son of Naggai,26 the son of Maath, the son of Mattathias, the son of Semein, the son of Josech, the son of Joda,27 the son of Joanan, the son of Rhesa, the son of Zerubbabel, the son of Shealtiel,[5] the son of Neri, (Esd 3,2; Mat 1,12)28 the son of Melchi, the son of Addi, the son of Cosam, the son of Elmadam, the son of Er,29 the son of Joshua, the son of Eliezer, the son of Jorim, the son of Matthat, the son of Levi,30 the son of Simeon, the son of Judah, the son of Joseph, the son of Jonam, the son of Eliakim,31 the son of Melea, the son of Menna, the son of Mattatha, the son of Nathan, the son of David, (2Sam 5,14; 1Cr 3,5; 1Cr 14,4; Zac 12,12)32 the son of Jesse, the son of Obed, the son of Boaz, the son of Sala, the son of Nahshon, (Ru 4,18; 1Sam 16,1; 1Sam 17,12; 1Cr 2,1)33 the son of Amminadab, the son of Admin, the son of Arni, the son of Hezron, the son of Perez, the son of Judah,34 the son of Jacob, the son of Isaac, the son of Abraham, the son of Terah, the son of Nahor, (Gen 5,3; Gen 11,10; Gen 21,3; Gen 25,26; Gen 29,35; 1Cr 1,1; 1Cr 1,24)35 the son of Serug, the son of Reu, the son of Peleg, the son of Eber, the son of Shelah,36 the son of Cainan, the son of Arphaxad, the son of Shem, the son of Noah, the son of Lamech,37 the son of Methuselah, the son of Enoch, the son of Jared, the son of Mahalaleel, the son of Cainan,38 the son of Enos, the son of Seth, the son of Adam, the son of God.

Luca 3

King James Version

1 Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judaea, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of Ituraea and of the region of Trachonitis, and Lysanias the tetrarch of Abilene,2 Annas and Caiaphas being the high priests, the word of God came unto John the son of Zacharias in the wilderness.3 And he came into all the country about Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins;4 As it is written in the book of the words of Esaias the prophet, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.5 Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be brought low; and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough ways shall be made smooth;6 And all flesh shall see the salvation of God.7 Then said he to the multitude that came forth to be baptized of him, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?8 Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of repentance, and begin not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, That God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.9 And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: every tree therefore which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.10 And the people asked him, saying, What shall we do then?11 He answereth and saith unto them, He that hath two coats, let him impart to him that hath none; and he that hath meat, let him do likewise.12 Then came also publicans to be baptized, and said unto him, Master, what shall we do?13 And he said unto them, Exact no more than that which is appointed you.14 And the soldiers likewise demanded of him, saying, And what shall we do? And he said unto them, Do violence to no man, neither accuse any falsely; and be content with your wages.15 And as the people were in expectation, and all men mused in their hearts of John, whether he were the Christ, or not;16 John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire:17 Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and will gather the wheat into his garner; but the chaff he will burn with fire unquenchable.18 And many other things in his exhortation preached he unto the people.19 But Herod the tetrarch, being reproved by him for Herodias his brother Philip's wife, and for all the evils which Herod had done,20 Added yet this above all, that he shut up John in prison.21 Now when all the people were baptized, it came to pass, that Jesus also being baptized, and praying, the heaven was opened,22 And the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him, and a voice came from heaven, which said, Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased.23 And Jesus himself began to be about thirty years of age, being (as was supposed) the son of Joseph, which was the son of Heli,24 Which was the son of Matthat, which was the son of Levi, which was the son of Melchi, which was the son of Janna, which was the son of Joseph,25 Which was the son of Mattathias, which was the son of Amos, which was the son of Naum, which was the son of Esli, which was the son of Nagge,26 Which was the son of Maath, which was the son of Mattathias, which was the son of Semei, which was the son of Joseph, which was the son of Juda,27 Which was the son of Joanna, which was the son of Rhesa, which was the son of Zorobabel, which was the son of Salathiel, which was the son of Neri,28 Which was the son of Melchi, which was the son of Addi, which was the son of Cosam, which was the son of Elmodam, which was the son of Er,29 Which was the son of Jose, which was the son of Eliezer, which was the son of Jorim, which was the son of Matthat, which was the son of Levi,30 Which was the son of Simeon, which was the son of Juda, which was the son of Joseph, which was the son of Jonan, which was the son of Eliakim,31 Which was the son of Melea, which was the son of Menan, which was the son of Mattatha, which was the son of Nathan, which was the son of David,32 Which was the son of Jesse, which was the son of Obed, which was the son of Booz, which was the son of Salmon, which was the son of Naasson,33 Which was the son of Aminadab, which was the son of Aram, which was the son of Esrom, which was the son of Phares, which was the son of Juda,34 Which was the son of Jacob, which was the son of Isaac, which was the son of Abraham, which was the son of Thara, which was the son of Nachor,35 Which was the son of Saruch, which was the son of Ragau, which was the son of Phalec, which was the son of Heber, which was the son of Sala,36 Which was the son of Cainan, which was the son of Arphaxad, which was the son of Sem, which was the son of Noe, which was the son of Lamech,37 Which was the son of Mathusala, which was the son of Enoch, which was the son of Jared, which was the son of Maleleel, which was the son of Cainan,38 Which was the son of Enos, which was the son of Seth, which was the son of Adam, which was the son of God.
