od Biblica1Asi týždeň pred Veľkou nocou sa Ježiš vrátil do Betánie, kde žil Lazár, ktorého vzkriesil z mŕtvych.2Na Ježišovu počesť pripravili slávnostnú večeru.3Marta obsluhovala pri stole a Lazár sedel ako hosť za stolom. Mária vzala nádobu s drahým olejom vyrobeným z nardu. Natierala ním Ježišovi nohy a utierala ich vlastnými vlasmi. Vôňa nardu naplnila celý dom.4Jednému z učeníkov – Judášovi Iškariotskému, ktorý Ježiša neskôr zradil – sa nepáčilo Máriino počínanie.5Vyčítal jej: „Prečo si taký vzácny olej radšej nepredala? Mohlo sa zaň získať tristo strieborniakov a peniaze sa mohli rozdať chudobným.“6Ale nepovedal to preto, že by cítil s chudobnými, ale že bol zlodej. Mal na starosti spoločnú pokladnicu a neraz si z nej pre seba niečo potiahol.7Ježiš mu na to povedal: „Nechaj ju. Tým ma pripravila na pohreb.8Chudobných budete mať medzi sebou vždy, ale ja už nebudem dlho s vami.“9Keď sa rozchýrilo, že Ježiš je v Betánii, pobrali sa za ním z Jeruzalema celé zástupy. Priťahoval ich však nielen Ježiš, chceli vidieť aj vzkrieseného Lazára.10Preto sa veľkňazi uzniesli, že zabijú aj Lazára,11lebo bol presvedčivým dôkazom Ježišovej moci. Mnohí ľudia kvôli nemu uverili v Ježiša ako Mesiáša.
Ježiš vstúpi do Jeruzalema ako kráľ
12Na druhý deň sa po celom Jeruzaleme rozniesla správa, že do mesta prichádza Ježiš. Zhromaždil sa veľký zástup a šiel ho vítať.13Ľudia nalámali palmové konáre a nadšene volali: „Sláva Bohu! Sláva tomu, ktorý prichádza v mene Pánovom! Nech žije izraelský kráľ!“14Ježiš vstúpil do mesta na oslíkovi, a tak sa naplnila predpoveď dávneho izraelského proroka:15„Neboj sa, izraelský ľud. Tvoj kráľ prichádza. Skromne sa nesie na osľati.“16Ježišovi učeníci si vtedy túto súvislosť neuvedomili. Až potom, keď sa Ježiš vrátil do svojej slávy v nebesiach, pochopili, že sa vtedy pred ich očami splnili mnohé proroctvá.17V zástupe boli mnohí očití svedkovia Lazárovho vzkriesenia a rozprávali o tomto zázraku,18preto sa zástup čoraz väčšmi zväčšoval.19Farizejov sa zmocnila panika: „Sme stratení. Nič nezmôžeme! Všetci sa k nemu pridávajú!“
Chceli by sme vidieť Ježiša
20V Jeruzaleme bolo aj niekoľko Grékov, ktorí prišli na veľkonočné sviatky spolu so Židmi.21Aj oni chceli spoznať Ježiša, preto sa obrátili na Ježišovho učeníka Filipa, ktorý bol z Betsaidy v Galilei. Poprosili ho: „Pane, chceli by sme vidieť Ježiša!“22Filip to povedal Andrejovi a spolu to oznámili Ježišovi.23Ježiš im na to povedal: „Nastala chvíľa, keď má byť Syn človeka oslávený.24Počúvajte pozorne: Ak pšeničné zrno nepadne do pôdy a nezomrie, neprinesie úžitok – zostane samo. Ak však zomrie, prinesie mnoho úžitku.25Kto svoj život miluje nadovšetko, stratí ho. Ale kto mi zverí svoj život, bude zachránený pre večnosť.26Zveriť mi svoj život znamená dôsledne nasledovať môj príklad. To znamená ísť cestou radosti aj utrpenia. Takého služobníka si váži aj môj Otec.“
Ježiš hovorí o svojej smrti
27„Teraz ma zviera úzkosť. Mám azda poprosiť:‚Otče, zachráň ma pred tým, čo ma čaká?‘ Nie, veď tým by som zradil svoje poslanie.28Otče, osláv svoje meno!“A vzápätí zaznel hlas z neba: „Už som oslávil a ešte oslávim!“29Ježiš v tej chvíli stál uprostred veľkého zástupu. Niektorí tvrdili, že zahrmelo, iní sa nazdávali, že to k nemu prehovoril anjel.30„Hlas, ktorý ste počuli, nezaznel kvôli mne, ale kvôli vám!“ vysvetlil Ježiš.31„Práve sa bude konať súd nad týmto svetom. Satan, vládca tohto sveta, bude zvrhnutý.32Ale keď ja budem vyvýšený, všetkých pritiahnem k sebe.“33Týmito slovami naznačil, že má zomrieť na kríži.34Zástup mu odporoval: „Zo Zákona sme sa predsa dozvedeli, že Mesiáš má zostať naveky. Prečo teda hovoríš, že Syn človeka musí byť vyvýšený? A kto je vlastne ten Syn človeka?“35Ježiš im na to povedal: „Ešte malú chvíľu bude svetlo medzi vami. Vážte si ho, kým svieti. Choďte za svetlom, inak sa ocitnete v tme. A bez svetla stratíte cestu.36Uverte tomu svetlu a dajte sa ním ožiariť, aby z vás svietilo ďalej, až tu nebude.“ Po týchto slovách sa Ježiš vytratil zo zástupu a skryl sa pred nimi.37Hoci Ježiš urobil mnoho zázrakov, ľudia mu predsa neuverili,38a tak sa potvrdili slová proroka Izaiáša: „Pane, kto uveril našim slovám? Kto poznal Božiu moc?“39Prorok Izaiáš ďalej ukazuje, aký dôsledok vyvodil Boh z ich nevery.40„Zaslepil im oči a zatvrdil srdce, takže nevidia a nechápu. Neobrátia sa k Bohu, aby im pomohol.“41Prorok tu hovorí o Mesiášovi a o jeho sláve.42A predsa aj medzi poprednými ľuďmi boli mnohí, ktorí v neho uverili, ale verejne sa k nemu nepriznali, lebo sa báli o svoje postavenie.43Väčšmi im záležalo na ľudskej sláve ako na Božej.44Ježiš naliehavo hovoril k ľuďom: „Kto verí vo mňa, verí vlastne v Boha, ktorý ma poslal.45A kto mňa vidí, vidí toho, z ktorého vôle prichádzam.46Prišiel som na svet ako svetlo, a kto vo mňa verí, nezostane v tme.47Kto počuje moje slová, ale nekoná podľa nich, toho nesúdim. Neprišiel som na svet, aby som ho súdil, ale zachránil.48Kto mňa odmieta a moje slová neprijíma, ten už má svojho sudcu: moje slová ho budú súdiť v posledný deň.49Nehovoril som vlastné myšlienky, hovorím len to, čím ma poveril Otec.50A jeho posolstvo prináša večný život. A tak vám hovorím len to, čo som sa dozvedel od Otca.“
1Six days before the Passover, Jesus therefore came to Bethany, where Lazarus was, whom Jesus had raised from the dead. (Mt 26,6; Mk 14,3; Jn 11,1; Jn 11,55; Jn 12,12; Jn 12,20)2So they gave a dinner for him there. Martha served, and Lazarus was one of those reclining with him at table. (Lk 10,38; Lk 10,40)3Mary therefore took a pound[1] of expensive ointment made from pure nard, and anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped his feet with her hair. The house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume. (Lk 7,37)4But Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples (he who was about to betray him), said,5“Why was this ointment not sold for three hundred denarii[2] and given to the poor?” (Jn 13,29)6He said this, not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief, and having charge of the moneybag he used to help himself to what was put into it. (Jn 12,5)7Jesus said, “Leave her alone, so that she may keep it[3] for the day of my burial.8For the poor you always have with you, but you do not always have me.”
The Plot to Kill Lazarus
9When the large crowd of the Jews learned that Jesus[4] was there, they came, not only on account of him but also to see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead. (Jn 11,44)10So the chief priests made plans to put Lazarus to death as well, (Lk 16,31)11because on account of him many of the Jews were going away and believing in Jesus. (Jn 11,45; Jn 12,18)
The Triumphal Entry
12The next day the large crowd that had come to the feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem. (Mt 21,4; Mk 11,7; Lk 19,35)13So they took branches of palm trees and went out to meet him, crying out, “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, even the King of Israel!” (Ž 118,25; Jn 1,49; Jn 5,43; Zjv 7,9)14And Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, just as it is written,15“Fear not, daughter of Zion; behold, your king is coming, sitting on a donkey’s colt!” (Zach 9,9)16His disciples did not understand these things at first, but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things had been written about him and had been done to him. (Mk 9,32; Jn 2,22; Jn 7,39; Jn 12,23; Jn 13,7)17The crowd that had been with him when he called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead continued to bear witness. (Lk 19,37)18The reason why the crowd went to meet him was that they heard he had done this sign. (Jn 12,9)19So the Pharisees said to one another, “You see that you are gaining nothing. Look, the world has gone after him.” (Jn 3,26; Jn 11,47)
Some Greeks Seek Jesus
20Now among those who went up to worship at the feast were some Greeks. (1 Kr 8,41; Mk 7,26; Jn 7,35; Sk 8,27; Sk 17,4)21So these came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and asked him, “Sir, we wish to see Jesus.” (Jn 1,44)22Philip went and told Andrew; Andrew and Philip went and told Jesus. (Mk 13,3)23And Jesus answered them, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. (Mk 14,41; Jn 2,4; Jn 12,16; Jn 12,27; Jn 13,31; Jn 17,1)24Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. (1 Kor 15,36)25Whoever loves his life loses it, and whoever hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. (Mt 10,39; Lk 14,26; Jn 11,25)26If anyone serves me, he must follow me; and where I am, there will my servant be also. If anyone serves me, the Father will honor him. (1 Sam 2,30; Ž 91,15; Jn 8,12; Jn 14,3; Jn 14,21; Jn 14,23; Jn 16,27; Jn 17,24; Jn 21,18; 2 Kor 5,8; 1 Sol 4,17)
36While you have the light, believe in the light, that you may become sons of light.” When Jesus had said these things, he departed and hid himself from them. (Lk 10,6)37Though he had done so many signs before them, they still did not believe in him,38so that the word spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled: “Lord, who has believed what he heard from us, and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?” (Iz 53,1; Mt 1,22; Rim 10,16)39Therefore they could not believe. For again Isaiah said, (Jn 5,44)40“He has blinded their eyes and hardened their heart, lest they see with their eyes, and understand with their heart, and turn, and I would heal them.” (Iz 6,10; Mt 13,14; Mk 6,52)41Isaiah said these things because he saw his glory and spoke of him. (Iz 6,1; Jn 5,46)42Nevertheless, many even of the authorities believed in him, but for fear of the Pharisees they did not confess it, so that they would not be put out of the synagogue; (Jn 3,1; Jn 7,13; Jn 7,48; Jn 9,22)43for they loved the glory that comes from man more than the glory that comes from God. (Jn 5,44)
Jesus Came to Save the World
44And Jesus cried out and said, “Whoever believes in me, believes not in me but in him who sent me. (Mt 10,40; Jn 5,24; Jn 13,20; Jn 14,1; 1 Pt 1,21)45And whoever sees me sees him who sent me. (Jn 6,40; Jn 14,9)46I have come into the world as light, so that whoever believes in me may not remain in darkness. (Jn 1,4; Jn 1,9; Jn 8,12; Jn 12,35)47If anyone hears my words and does not keep them, I do not judge him; for I did not come to judge the world but to save the world. (Jn 3,17; Jn 3,36; Jn 4,42; Jn 8,15)48The one who rejects me and does not receive my words has a judge; the word that I have spoken will judge him on the last day. (Dt 18,18; Lk 10,16; Rim 2,16)49For I have not spoken on my own authority, but the Father who sent me has himself given me a commandment—what to say and what to speak. (Jn 3,17; Jn 5,19; Jn 5,30; Jn 15,10)50And I know that his commandment is eternal life. What I say, therefore, I say as the Father has told me.”
